TOPIC: RESPONSE TO THE TWENTY FOUR POINTS RAISED FROM LINDA IKEJI'S INTERVIEW WITH DADDY FREEZE ON TITHING. 1. DADDY FREEZE: "Anyone paying tithe to a Nigerian pastor is a goat"! RESPONSE: That is an extreme emotional outburst, and wrong to call a free moral being a goat for practicing what he/she believes. You can make your point if you feel you know better without insults; that is how matured people respond. Knowledge puffs up though; however, insults like this can mean contempt to their Maker too. 2. DADDY FREEZE: "The transfer of physical wealth to spiritual wealth was done in Matthew 25; and has nothing to do with giving to pastors". RESPONSE: Matt. 25:31-46 is not a reference to the Church but to the Gentile nations, after the battle of Armageddon, and the establishment of Christ's millennial reign on earth (the kingdom age). It can be applied to the Church, but can't be used to formulate a doctrine to mean a prescription from the Lord on giving. 3. DADDY FREEZE: "You want to give your money to Jesus? Give it to the sick in hospitals, the homeless, hungry, naked etc" RESPONSE: The Church is not a charity organisation, but certainly do the work of charity. The primary assignment of the Church is to preach the gospel to win souls, and disciple the souls won by teaching them the word of God (Matt. 28:19-20; Mk. 16:15-20; 1 Tim. 2:3-6. One of the basic reasons for giving in church generally, is so that this vision and mission of the Lord can be fulfilled easily on a corporate level. 4. DADDY FREEZE: "Don't give to one of this jet-flying daddy G. Os, who should, as far as i am concerned be giving to you". RESPONSE: You can't sit on an interview to castigate men who give more than you can ever imagine, simply because they don't display it on TV or in public space. The Bible says when you give, it should be in secret and not openly (Matt. 6:1-4). Any true church or pastor does give generously, and assist the needy without drawing any attention to itself. Moreover, giving to a man of God makes you a partaker or partner of his grace (Phil. 1:5-7l,receiving from him however, only meets your physical need. 5. DADDY FREEZE: "A very popular Nigerian verse, Mal. 3:8-10, by a minor prophet, who was referring to the Levites, and not the people; because you choose not to read and be enlightened. The story started in Neh. 10:38". RESPONSE: The address in Nehemiah chapter 10 began from verse 28, and not verse 38; it was addressing the whole Israelites, and verse 38 was specific to priests. In Malachi chapter 2 ,the rebuke began with the priests, to the men concerning marriage and divorce, and in chapter 3, the reference was to Judah and Jerusalem as it relates to their offerings and tithes being acceptable before the Lord, and not just the levites. 6. DADDY FREEZE: "The church and pastors are sitting on 10% of eighty million Christians, to build more churches and enslave more people. How does that translate to electricity, good jobs, schools etc". RESPONSE: The responsibility of the government shouldn't be transferred to the Church; but if the Church decides to assist the government, we should see it as it is, an assistance and a mere privilege. The Bible is clear on what tithes should be used for, and not for what you are purporting. For the records, not all people who attend church pay tithes, it is not all even who believe in tithing that are committed to it faithfully. 7. DADDY FREEZE: "You cannot get married to anyone who doesn't pay tithe in the church". RESPONSE: Tithing is one of the yardstick to prove a man's commitment in the local assembly he claims to belong to. Moreover, a man's heart is where his treasures are (Matt. 6:21). Giving is a sign you believe in the vision of the church you attend, and you don't have any business giving or trying to marry where you don't believe in, or belong to! 8. DADDY FREEZE: "Tithe is not a genuine doctrine but a false doctrine. Jesus never paid tithe and never collected tithe, never told His disciples to pay tithe". RESPONSE: Jesus could even go to John's baptism to fulfill all righteousness, and wasn't tithing; are you kidding me? He also had a treasurer, and people His ministry blessed gave to Him out of their substances, and not leftovers (Lk. 8:1-3)? Jesus never had to command His disciples and followers to tithe, because tithe was already a norm with the Jews; He didn't need to teach them what they already knew. Your point here is not strong enough to either render tithing a false doctrine or validate it as correct using the laws of hermeneutics. 9. DADDY FREEZE: "Jesus spoke about tithe in passing, and rebuking them". RESPONSE: It wasn't a statement in passing in Matt. 23:23, but Jesus was helping them to put their priorities right; that there is no use paying tithe and ignoring acting according to justice and equity towards all mankind. Our Lord did not object to their paying tithes even to the tiniest fraction, but was against them doing it to the utter neglect of justice, mercy, and faith. 10. DADDY FREEZE: "Back then, tithe was herbs, plants, and animals etc. Someone even said to me that, there was no money back then". RESPONSE: There were predominantly farmers and tithed what the had and what came in as income. 11. DADDY FREEZE: "Deut. 14:22-26, says you can sell your tithe and bring the money and buy whatever you like; which includes beer and strong drink etc. You are supposed to bring it to the place the Lord has chosen. Have you seen anybody drink bear in church"? RESPONSE: This is a misinterpretation and misconception of Deuteronomy 14:22-26, that is presented here. The word to "Truly tithe" means and refers to the second tithe, which themselves were to eat (Deut. 14:23); however, there was a first tithe that was given to the Levites, out of which they paid a tenth part to the priests (Num. 18:24-28; Neh. 10:37-38). The first tithe was for the maintenance of the Levites, who taught them the good knowledge of God, ministered to them in holy things; it was entailed upon the Levites as an inheritance by law, because they had no inheritance in Israel (Num. 18:24). However, the reason for a second portion from the produce of their land was required was against the backdrop of the covetousness, distrust, and selfishness of the human heart. The act promoted friendliness, liberality, and cheerfulness; and raised a fund relief of the poor. They were taught that worldly portion was most comfortably enjoyed, when shared with the brethren who were in want. If we thus serve God, and do good with what we have, the Lord will bless us in all the works of our hand. The blessing is what guarantees the outward prosperity, and without which, the works of our hands will bring forth nothing. Finally, talking about beer and strong drinks, the New Testament believer is a king and priest, and therefore, alcoholic beverages don't go with such a high calling in Christ. 12. DADDY FREEZE: Tithing is not every month, the first year, you are supposed to eat it; i don't see how it turns to every month. How does something you do once in three years becomes something you do every month"? RESPONSE: Tithe is bringing all the tenth of the increase of all thy seed, that the field brings forth year by year (Deut. 14:22); because they were farmers who have yearly harvest and increase. Today, people work or do business apart from farming, and are paid either daily, weekly or monthly; so they don't need to wait to pay their tithe annually. To be continued.
