Nigerian power-lifter, Josephine Orji, last night shattered the world record of the women’s -+86kg power-lifting event at the ongoing 2016 Paralympics Games in Rio, Brazil with a lift of 154kg to win the gold medal.

The gold medal is Nigeria’s eighth at the 2016 Paralympics. Team Nigeria is comfortably seated in the 10th position on the overall medals table with eight gold, two silver and one bronze.
Poland’s Marzena Zieba, who finished with 134kg, settled for the silver while Holland’s Melaica Tuinfort got the consolatory bronze with her best lift of 130kg in the +86kg category.

Orji’s performance yesterday capped the brilliant performance of Team Nigeria’s special athletes at the Games. The swashbuckling fair complexioned Nigerian lady who was sure of her capacity opted to enter the battle with the other competitors on a frightening scale.

She entered the contest with 151kg lift, a weight that was far beyond the capacity of any other competitor in her category.

The only other lifter who came close to her effrontery, Egypt’s Nadya Ali, failed in all her three attempts to lift 145kg.

With the gold already in the kitty, Orji now set her mind at taking the world record. Twice she failed to lift the 154kg but buoyed on by her vociferous teammates and Technical Adviser, Areh Feyisetan, Orji dug deep into her inner strength in the third attempt to surmount the obstacle and pocketed the world record.

Her attempt at lifting 160kg was a mission impossible but was however consoled with climbing the podium for the precious gold and a world record to butt.

Earlier in the day, Flora Ugwunwa had won the Women’s Javelin Throw – F53/54 event.
With a throw of 20.25m, Ugwunwa set a new world record to beat Tunisia’s Hania Aidi and South Africa’s Ntombizanele Situ to second and third places respectively.

Petit Lauritta Onye won Nigeria’s other track and field gold in the Shot Put event.
Competing in the women’s shot put f40 event on the Day-four of the Rio Paralympics, Onye first heaved 7.83m that saw her break her world record of 7.72m set at the IPC World Athletics Championships in Doha, Qatar in 2015.

Her second throw was 7.54m. She however went one centimetre further on her third attempt.
Onye’s fourth attempt of 8.40m sent Team Nigeria camp into jubilation mood as it secured the fifth gold medal for the country.

Onye’s medal is Nigeria’s seventh at the Rio Paralympic Games.
Ndidi Nwosu defeated the defending champion to win women’s -73kg Powerlifting event gold medal.
Nwosu was set for the bronze medal before she stepped up in her very last attempt, lifting 140kg to equal the Paralympics Record (PR) and usurp France’s Souhad Ghazouani for the gold.
Another Nigerian, Bose Omolayo, broke her own world record and set a new one of 138kg to win gold medal.

Earlier at the weekend, Team Nigeria’s captain, Lucy Ejike, broke the Paralympic and world record three successive times, to win the women’s -61kg event in power-lifting. Her successful attempt at 136.kg on Sunday set a new Paralympic record and world record.

Ejike went on to set a bigger mark of 138kg, before lifting a massive 142kg.
Another power-lifter, Paul Kehinde, had earlier at the weekend given Team Nigeria her second gold medal of the Games. Kehinde in the -65kg men’s category, lifted 218kg to beat his rivals to the gold medal.

His gold came after Roland Ezuruike had on Friday won Nigeria’s first gold in Rio, also in power-lifting.

China’s Peng Hu (200kg) finished second, while Egypt’s Shaaban Ibrahim (193kg) won the bronze medal.

Latifat Tijani won silver in the women’s power-lifting -45kg on Friday, with Esther Oyema adding another silver in the women’s power-lifting -55kg category on Saturday.
Team Nigeria’s eight gold, two silver and one bronze haul is better than the Sydney 2000 Paralympics all-time haul of seven gold, one silver and five bronze medals.

SENATOR ATHAN ACHONU OF PDP WINS MOCK ONLINE POLLS OF OKIGWE SENATE SEAT!!!

In a build up to the July 23rd 2016 Senatorial rerun election of IMO NORTH senatorial zone of IMO State, A Civil Society organization, Vanguard for Good Governance(VGG )conducted a transparent mock online polls involving Sen Athan Achonu of PDP and Rt Hon Benjamin Uwajumogu of APC from 5pm on the 11th of July to 7pm of 12th July.
At the end of the mock online poll exercise,Sen Athan Achonu of PDP polled 49 votes representing 75% of total votes cast, while Rt Hon Benjamin Uwajumogu polled 14 votes representing 21% of total votes while one vote was invalid.
Declaring the winner, the Convener and Facilitator of VGG,Comr C.U.C Tonwa charged the winner and the looser to think beyond the social media in driving home their quest to become the Senator representing Okigwe zone. He also admonished the two candidates to rejigg their campaign modus operandi, oil their machinery, block all loopholes and penetrate the real grassroots in their electioneering campaigns.
Enumerating further,Comr Tonwa emphasized that this results doesn’t represent the overall larger views of Ndi Okigwe as the catchment people that voted consists of mainly Okigwe,Orlu and Owerri electorates on social media ,but rather it as an eye opener and a wake up call to the two candidates on the need to press further their manifesto and convince the Okigwe masses on why they are worthy to represent the zone at the red chamber,

AHIARA DIOCESE BISHOPHRIC DEBACLE!! MY PERSPECTIVE

What is happening among the catholic faithful in Ahiara Diocese is akin to gross disobedience and affront to God and Catholic faith in general .
If the Pontiff yields to the selfish demands of some elements in Mbaise and withdraws Bishop Okpaleake, then unending crisis will envelope the larger body because subsequent Dioceses will be protesting and rejecting Bishops sent to them if they are not indigenes of their place.
Don’t we have Mbaise priests all over the Dioceses of Nigeria and beyond holding important positions?
Is Bishop Okpalaeke not a Catholic?.Is Catholic Bishop Post now an avenue to amass ill-gotten wealth?
Sometimes I now see reason why no Mbaise man or woman has become the Governor of Imo state and I doubt if they will ever smell Douglas house in the near future due to this type of attitude.
The earlier the older priests of Ahiara Diocese call to order this young exuberant Priests that brainwash their lay faithful into seeing our most revered Cardinal Arinze in bad light, the better for them.
Must everything concerning Mbaise be different?.If I talk now, they will say I have issues to grind with them even when I have the best of friends from there.
It is on record that Igbo Priests that are Bishops in the South South, North Central and even some West African Countries are countless and I cant recall if those nations and Dioceses rejected them even when they are not from their place.
Let this disgrace, embarrassment and total disregard for constituted authority by some Mbaise priests and their lay faithful stop forthwith because the consequences will be unpalatable in the long run..

Senator Athan Achonu and Hon Ben Uwajumogu are brothers but the July 23rd debacle is now a battle of Imo 2019 calculations.
With Sen Ifeanyi Ararume politicking from Isiala Mbano,Ben Uwajumogu from Ihite Uboma,Chief Tony Chukwu from Ehime Mbano,Deacon Chike Okafor,Prof Nnamdi Obiarari all from Okigwe south axis firing from all cylinders, it will seem all rosy for Ben to clinch the seat, but a cursory look will pinpoint the fact that the undying fan base of Fmr Governor Ikedi Ohakim from Isiala Mbano,Chief Chukwuonye CODUC,Hon Obinna Onwubuariri from Okigwe axis will pull a viable shock absorber for the Ehime Mbano born General.
The performance indices of APC led govt both at the federal and state levels are not helping matters too in order to market its candidate .more so as the leadership crisis bedeviling PDP both at Imo PDP and National level is also a source of worry to the Agu Otu Aka General.
There fore at this juncture, its now umpteenth that the real electoral masses of Okigwe zone will determine who represents them at the red chamber.
The choice between an opposition first timer cum billionaire in the senate and a ranking member from the ruling party is now open to Okigwe electorates..
Who should Okigwe vote in?..Your guess is as good as mine

The PDP ward Congresses in IMO state recorded unprecedented gunshot, which observers said will remain the worst ward Congresses ever witnessed in the history of IMO state.
A grapevine source who witnessed the event narrated that Orlu harmonization lists was what kick started the crisis that later skyrocketed into a heavy gun battle between the camp of Senator Hope Uzodinma and Hon. Emeka Ihedioha. He disclosed that trouble started when two die hard supporters of Hon. Emeka Ihedioha in Orlu zone ( Hon. Jones Onyeriri, from Nkwere local government area and Hon. Alphonsus Irona from Oguta LGA) made an attempt to submit their LGA lists before the congress committee proclaiming leaders of the two local government areas. They were overpowered by combatant thugs who collected the lists from them and started pummeling them like common criminals.
The thugs didn't stop at that, they started shooting sporadically, which left everyone including the congress committee led by Sergeant Awuse and the Deputy Governor of Abia state to scamper for safety. Fastidiously, the committee had to relocate from Immaculate Hotel where the incident took place to a more security tight Rock view Hotel, both in Owerri, where the political wrestling cum battle of wit continued till midnight/this morning.
A Comic drama later played out as the governorship candidate of PDP in the last general election, Hon. Emeka Ihedioha, was spotted at Rock view Hotel, running after the committee with a bare foot, looking very despondent having been brutally humbled by Senator Hope in Orlu zone, Some parts of Owerri and Okigwe respectively.
As at the time I peeped last at Rockview Hotel Owerri, late last night, the meeting was still ongoing while their supporters were seen everywhere juxtaposing amongst the leaders, though Senator Hope Uzodinma was not involved in the meeting. Hmmm! PDP can never change.

One is the uneven spread of the three Senatorial zones of Imo state, Secondly is the strength cum weaknesses of the current administration of Gov Rochas Okorocha, Thirdly is the internal crisis plaguing the PDP in Imo state, finally is the abysmal low support base of the ruling party in the State.
