After three months of staying away
from work, non-teaching workers of
Nigerian universities on Thursday
gathered in Abuja for a protest
march that ended with a rally at the
National Assembly.
The workers are protesting the
refusal of government to address the
issues over which they had been on
strike since December 4.
The workers are angry over the
sharing formula adopted by federal
universities for the N23 billion
released to them last year by
government as earned allowances
for their workers. They said their
colleagues in the Academic Staff
Union of Universities (ASUU) took
for themselves the bulk of the
money and left the non-teaching
staff with “pittance.”
The workers, who are members of
three staff unions in the universities,
are also asking government to
intervene in alleged large-scale
corruption in Nigerian tertiary
institutions.

This year’s Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination
(UTME), will begin on Friday.
It is scheduled to hold from March 9 to March 17
Ugwoke said that the threat became imperative as the Federal
Government had continued to renege on the agreement it
entered with the unions.
According to him, “since our strike continues, JAC has
decided that no activity will take place in the universities.”
“This is because if we are on strike and you expect our
members to come and supervise JAMB or come to operate
their machines like the computers, that means we are
breaking the strike already.
“JAC has also decided that to redraw their assistance they
would not go to work. So all I know is that as long as we are
on strike, JAC has decide that there will be no exam.
“Our members will not participate and they will make sure that
the exam does not hold in the universities that is the position
of JAC, ‘’ he said.
He noted that JAC has also decided to hold a mega mass
protest rally on Thursday, March 8, to sensitise the public on
the issue of alleged corruption and the social injustices in the
Nigerian university system.

A group of Northern Youths has threatened legal actions against former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, if he fails to run for the Presidency in 2019.

The Youth under the umbrella of Turaki Vanguard Youths and Women Mobilization Group said Abubakar should run for Presidency because he was the only credible candidate from the North-East.


Addressing journalists in Kaduna, national chairman of the body, Zachariah Diwong said the Waziri of Adamawa is the only credible Nigerian that had the capacity to transform the country.

Diwong also noted that the former Vice President was the most youths friendly leader that has mentored Nigerian youth over the years.

According to Diwong, “For equity, justice and fairness, we believe it is time for the entire north to support somebody from the northeast to as our President. And Atiku is the best from that region.

“Atiku Abubakar is a tested and trusted individual who has the capacity to transform Nigeria better than what it is today.


“Nobody from the North Eastern Nigeria is most qualify than the former Vice President. He is the man that knows Nigeria. The man who has been in the policy making of Nigeria. A philanthropist.

“For these reasons and many more, we the Youth from the Northwest hereby endorsed Atiku Abubakar for presidency come 2019 and failure to contest, legal actions will be taken.”
