Lagos - The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) on Sunday announced the exit of Arunma Oteh as the commission's Director-General. The commission made the disclosure in a statement issued by its management in Lagos. It said that Oteh would be remembered for her passion, purpose, articulation and implementation of reform measures driven by the vision to transform the Nigerian capital market into world class. “She was in a hurry to see Nigeria achieve a world class capital market that will drive development and make Nigeria one of the most attractive investment destination," it said. Some of her accomplishments, according to the statement, include restoration of investor confidence through strong enforcement actions and improvement of rules and regulations and investor education. It said that SEC established the National Investor Protection Fund and strengthened its Administrative Proceedings Committee (APC) to deepen and broaden the market. “The market witnessed significant product innovation, improved listing rules, landmark bond market reforms widening of participation in the markets through licensing and coming on stream of other capital trade points. “Under her leadership, the SEC also championed reforms at the Nigeria Stock Exchange (NSE) that witnessed a more robust output and delivery in its operator/oversight role,” the statement said. The initiative to revamp NSE listing rules, it said, led to landmark transactions in dual listing of SEPLAT Petroleum on the NSE and the London Stock Exchange in April 2014, as well as the development of an alternative securities market. It said she would certainly be remembered for rescuing the capital market from the doldrums in which it was mired as a result of sharp practices that were rife and the global financial crisis soon after she assumed office in January 2010," said the statement. Oteh was appointed by the late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua in 2009 but resumed in January 2010. - NAN |

BENIN - The Edo State Chapter of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has expressed concern at the deteriorating security situation in the state occasioned by the heightening alleged political intolerance under the Governor Adams Oshiomhole-led All Progressives Congress (APC) administration. The party in a statement signed by its chairman Chief Dan Osi Orbih was alarmed by the Tuesday night attack by loyalists of Oshiomhole on an elected member of the State Assembly, Razaq Momoh. He was allegedly attacked for dumping APC for the PDP. “According to eyewitnesses, APC thugs led by Phillip Shuaib, Governor Oshiomhole's leg man in the State House of Assembly, stormed Hon. Momoh's official residence at Legislators' quarters, Ihama Road, Benin, with dangerous weapons which they unleashed on the lawmaker. We strongly condemn this bestial attack which is a reflection of the growing desperation of the Oshiomhole APC-led administration in the face of its fast dwindling political support,” Orbih said. He added that in a democracy, the right to freedom of association is sacred and must be respected by all. “We call on the Inspector General of Police to bring to book all those involved in the dastardly act of the near-assasination of Honorable Razak Momoh.” The party sympathizes with Momoh and his family on the attack and prayed for his speedy recovery. PDP also appealed to their members to remain calm and be law-abiding amid provocation. “We appeal to our members to remain calm and be law-abiding in the face of the unwarranted attacks by goons of the APC, while we await official police action on the matter. We call on Governor Adams Oshiomhole to rise above party lines and become governor of all. We advise him to stop all manner of incivility and persecution of persons who do not subscribe to his political ideology and actions.” The party alleged that Oshiomhole, who could not be reached for comment, stoked the division in the state Assembly by relocating APC lawmakers to a section of his office in Government House, Benin. “We also note with disappointment, how Governor Oshiomhole recently presented his 2015 Appropriation Bill to APC lawmakers in a section of his office. We believe that Governor Oshiomhole's acts of commission and omission is aiding and abetting members to subscribe to impunity.” – CAJ News |
Akure - Few days after the defection of the Ondo State governor, Olusegun Mimiko to the Peoples Democratic Party, members of the state House of Assembly on Wednesday announced their defection to the PDP, reports ThisDay. The defection which took place during the plenary session had 24 members of the Assembly signing the letter of intent to dump the Labour Party (LP ) for the PDP. However, one member, Gbenga Edema representing Ilaje Constituency II has not indicated his intention to go along with his colleagues to the PDP as he did not signed the letter of intent. With the defection of the lawmakers, PDP now has 24 members in the 26-member legislature. Read more at ThisDay. |

The All Progressives Congress (APC) yesterday told President Goodluck Jonathan and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to stop taking credit for the country’s successful containment of the Ebola Disease Virus (EVD). It said it would amount to dishonesty for the President and his party to turn what was a collective effort to a campaign issue. But the PDP fired back, saying the APC preferred that “the Ebola scourge continued unabated in Nigeria so as to have what to blame the PDP-led government for”. The PDP made its position known in a response to a statement by the APC National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed. The APC said President Jonathan and his party were wrong to have appropriated the credit for the successful containment of the EVD without giving due credit to the real heroes of the successful battle: Dr. Stella Adadevoh and her colleagues at the First Consultant Hospital; officials of the ministries of Health in Lagos and Rivers states and the patriotic Nigerian volunteers, among others. It described as a cheap shot and a shameless venture the President’s decision to make the Ebola success story a campaign issue during a PDP rally in Benin, giving the impression that only the PDP deserves the credit for the successful containment of the disease. The APC said while indeed Health Minister Onyebuchi Chukwu exhibited the kind of professionalism and purposefulness that are not common with the Jonathan Administration during the battle against Ebola, it will be uncharitable for the PDP-led Federal Government to pretend as if the governments of the two affected states did nothing. The party reminded President Jonathan that the two states hit by Ebola, Lagos and Rivers, are APC states, and that the promptness, purposefulness, doggedness and determination shown by the governors contributed largely to the successful containment of the virulent disease. ‘’The cities of Lagos and Port Harcourt are perhaps the largest metropolis to have ever been hit by the EVD since the first outbreak was recorded in the Democratic Republic of Congo almost 40 years ago, and any mishandling of the disease could have spelt disaster not just for the cities but for the country as a whole. ‘’But the ever-dogged and determined Governors Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State and Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers states employed the same winning strategies that have stood their states out of the pack and quickly rose to the occasion, putting in place measures that ensured a quick curtailing of the EVD spread. The measures include painstaking contact-tracing, unrelenting follow-up and creative treatment of infected patients even without access to the experimental drug Zmapp. ‘’There is no doubt that Nigeria is fortunate that the EVD outbreaks were recorded in those two states. It is a measure of the high premium that the Chief Executives of the states place on human life, a testimony to the strong health systems they are building and an indication of their purposeful approach to governance that they successfully contained the disease, thus earning Nigeria a rare accolade from the global community. ‘’Unlike the President and the PDP, we will also like to give credit to the Minister of Health, Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu, for acting out of character with the do-nothing Jonathan Administration. We hope President Jonathan and his party will stop making the Ebola success story in which opposition states were the main actors a fulcrum of their campaign for the 2015 general elections. They cannot and should not take credit for the containment of Ebola in Nigeria,’’ APC said. The party also advised President Jonathan not to use the Ebola containment effort as another tool to divide Nigerians along party lines. ‘’President Jonathan is the most divisive President in Nigeria’s history. He inherited a united Nigeria, but has divided the country along ethnic and religious lines on the altar of selfish personal ambition and short-term opportunism. It will amount to a monumental tragedy if the President will again use the Ebola success story, which has earned Nigeria a rare acclamation from the global community, as a tool to further divide Nigerians,’’ it said.- THE NATION

I stumbled on this article today and I thought I should share. was written by Gbenga owotoki , the founder and Presiding Coordinator Hephzibah Network International . A young police officer was taking his final exam for the police academy and he read the following question in the exam paper: You are on patrol in the outer city when an explosion occurs in a gas main in a nearby street. On investigation you find that a large hole has been blown in the footpath and there is an overturned van nearby. Inside the van there is a strong smell of alcohol. Both occupants-a man and a woman-are injured. You recognize the woman as the wife of your Chief of Police, who is at present away in the USA. A passing motorist stops to offer you assistance and you realize that he is a man who is wanted for armed robbery. Suddenly a man runs out of a nearby house, shouting that his wife is expecting a baby and that the shock of the explosion has made the birth imminent. Another man is crying for help, having been blown in the adjacent canal by the explosion, and he cannot swim. Describe in a few words what actions you would take. The young man thought for a moment, picked up his pen and wrote, "I would take off my uniform and mingle with the crowd." Some of us see the Christian life in the same way. We see the Christian life as trying to juggle five or six balls at one time whilst balancing a jug of water on our heads. And when the pressure gets too much we want to give up and mingle with the crowd. We spend our time trying to pass what we perceive to be "God's exam" to make us "holy." There is a perception about the church today that we have lost our 'salt'. During the era of the apostles, they were identified as Christians because they lived the Christ-like life, they didn't scream they were Christians to be recognized; their life reflects righteousness but today the 'salt has lost its savor.' We introduce ourselves as Christians and people look around thinking you are talking about someone else. Churches are found on every street with loudspeakers blaring in the air and even in some cases three to four churches in a building and yet evil and wickedness is being perpetrated by the same people who throng these places of worship. Some as a result of their 'deep pockets' have even gone ahead to become church leaders, cabals and power brokers and the pastor dare not speak against their wantonness and evil otherwise they will get angry and leave the church to the ever waiting hands of another pastor who will gladly welcome them with those baggage. Oh! What an answer to prayers (so they think) at least the tithe portfolio will know increase and I can enjoy the same luxury of Pastor X,Y,Z. Shame on you! You have blood on your hands already. No wonder the light has gone out; we make so much noise but no impact. It wasn't so from the beginning. Men in suit have taken over the pulpit and with their oratory have swept many away from the core spiritual principles that have been the bedrock of our faith. We have blended in; the world in the church and the church in the world…you cannot spot the difference anymore. People now equate success in ministry to the number of churches established and the corresponding mammoth followership they enjoy and yet no difference is seen even on the streets where the church is sited; evil thrive continually. The church has failed to tell the people that though our God is love, He is equally a consuming fire. Membership drive is the principal focus (don't get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with growing your church) and as a result we censor our messages because we don't want them to leave our churches and take the money elsewhere. Of course (we say to ourselves) we need the money otherwise, where do we get fund to build our big cathedrals with our name boldly inscribed on it. We have lost focus. We are running blind of our final destination. Enough of the 'big man' gospel that impoverishes the soul. Let's share the truth of the Word and earnestly contend for the faith that was once delivered unto the saints. The pulpit use to be a place of penitence, holiness, prayer and the Presence of God but today you see that glitz, glamour and razzmatazz have taken over this priceless virtues, little wonder why people who see such go ahead to learn the pulpit theatrics so they could fit in and sway the ever gullible public. We need to get back on track. Be the light that God has called us to be. Heaven is searching for men that will not sell their soul in exchange for a morsel of bread. What will count eventually is what the Lord will say of you when you come face to face with Him. Think about it! |
From the kitchen to the bedroom, coconut oil has a number of health benefits that go beyond just weight loss. Thanks to the current Banting and Paleo styles of eating, popularised by Professor Tim Noakes, coconut oil has made a comeback. But what is it about coconut oil that makes it such a super food? Coconut oil is one of the richest sources of saturated fat, with 90% of its calories as saturated fat. It contains a unique composition of fatty acids and is highly resistant to oxidation at high heat, making it an ideal oil for high-heat cooking such as frying. It also contains medium chain triglycerides that are transported directly from the digestive tract to the liver and provide a quick source of energy. However, it is the presence of the fatty acid known as lauric acid, that gives coconut oil most of its super health benefits. Seven reasons why coconut oil is a super food 1. Weight loss Coconut oil is easy to digest and has been shown to slow the rate of digestion, which stabilises our blood sugar and helps us feel fuller for longer. It also increases metabolism which eases pressure on the pancreas, and in so doing burns more energy. 2. Healthy heart The lauric acid in coconut oil has been shown to prevent some heart problems such as high cholesterol. While it is high in saturated fats, which are usually associated with high cholesterol, the saturated fats in coconut oil do not increase the LDL (or “bad”) cholesterol levels and can actually protect the arteries and reduce the risk of atherosclerosis. 3. Boosting immunity Coconut oil is bursting with antifungal, antibacterial and antiviral properties from the antimicrobial lipids, lauric acid, capric acid and caprylic acids it contains. The lauric acid is converted into monolaurin which has been shown to fight off some nasty viruses and bacterias, such as herpes, influenza, and even HIV. According to the US Coconut Research Center, coconut oil kills the viruses that cause influenza, measles, hepatitis, herpes, SARS, and other serious conditions. It also kills bacteria that cause ulcers, throat infections, urinary tract infections, pneumonia, and gonorrhoea. 4. Stress buster Using coconut oil as a massage oil will not only moisturise your skin – when used to massage your scalp it can help fight mental fatigue. 5. Hair care Using coconut oil on your hair can not only help encourage growth of new hair, but gives it a healthy shine. Use it as a conditioner and massage it into your scalp to prevent dandruff and even lice. 6. Healthy bones and teeth Coconut oil can assist the body to absorb minerals such as calcium and magnesium from the foods we eat, which in turn promote stronger, healthier bones, which may ward off osteoporosis later in life. This can also protect the teeth, as properties in the coconut oil can stop tooth decay. 7. Skin care Using coconut oil on the skin can form a chemical barrier on the skin and ward off infection. It has also been known to alleviate the symptoms associated with skin conditions such as psoriasis, eczema, and dermatitis by supporting the natural chemical balance of the skin. - Health24 |

Edo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress ( APC ) on Monday told President Goodluck Jonathan that it was a tall dream to think that Chief Tom Ikimi who recently joined the PDP would win Edo State for him. The APC was apparently reacting to Saturday’ s declaration by the President in Benin that his Peoples Democratic Party ( PDP ) would recapture Edo State in 2015 and 2016 . President Jonathan at a unity rally of the PDP in Benin City, had declared that the party would win Rivers and Edo states back in 2015 and 2016 , asserting that in Rivers State , “we know that the party in charge is PDP , the APC only exist on billboards ”. But in a swift reaction, the APC through the Special Adviser to Governor Adams Oshiomhole on Political Matters and a member of the state APC caucus , Charles Idahosa , reminded the President that the Binis which constitute over 50 per cent of the population of Edo State have been marginalised in his government and therefore it would be a tall dream to think that the “Esan godfather will win Edo for him”. “It is unfortunate that the President is being deceived by the PDP leaders here and people like Ikimi who recently defected to the PDP because he lost out in the chairmanship of the APC . It is just a dream they can never deliver . Tom Ikimi who spoke during the rally, how many people defected to PDP with him? “Ikimi said he left APC because after cooking the food people came and stole both the pot and the food but in this case , he forgot that it was Ize - Iyamu who cooked those that left the APC for PDP but he went at the stadium to hijack the show by introducing Ize - Iyamu instead of Ize - Iyamu introducing Ikimi to the President. “Ize - Iyamu who did all the cooking was now a spectator . The only people who spoke at that rally, in Benin soil were two Esan people , Anenin and Ikimi, and that is the continuation of the subjugation of the Binis by the minorities. “Dr . Ogbemudia was never mentioned there , former Governor Lucky Igbinedion was seated there , his father Esama was seated, none of them was asked to speak, yet President Jonathan is boasting that PDP will win Edo, that is laughable ,” he stated. “We will deal with them in February. As we speak today there is no single Bini man or woman who is a Minister, Permanent Secretary , CEO , so what is the PDP going to tell Benin people that will make the Benins vote for PDP ? . And the days of rigging are over. We are going to deal with them . Every appointment is in Esan, Uromi in particular . It is a wild dream to say they will win Edo ,” he further stated. --Daily Independent |

Why do you want to arrest TB Joshua? By: Peregrino Brimah 2014-09-26 19:31 So many people are shouting, “arrest T. B. Joshua!” “Lock him up now!” “Throw away the key.” Why? Why do you want to arrest TB Joshua? I read this group of writers from the USA. Over five of them came together to pen and sign this long letter demanding for TB Joshua’s arrest. Summary of it was that he violated building law. This is all that TB Joshua did. What about the Town Planning Authority? Where were they? What were they looking at that they did not demolish the building? You want to arrest TB Joshua, but you do not know they should be arrested first? TB Joshua only killed 100 plus people who volunteered of their own volition and not under compulsion to visit him for miracles. They got miracles. We cannot say they were forced. Have you arrested Diezani Alison-Madueke? Where are those five spirited writers to demand the arrest of Diezani who has continued to steal $4 million every single day from the poorest kitchens in Nigeria through her illegal kerosene “subsidy” scam? Do we know how many her robbery kills everyday in hardship? Hundreds every day, and we want to arrest TB Joshua? Have you arrested Farouk Lawani? Have you arrested General Ihejrika, the man who embezzled billions of dollars for our nation’s security and directly and indirectly facilitated/ sponsored Boko Haram’s success? Have you clamored for his arrest for the transfer all those APC’s we are just recovering from Boko Haram after he was exposed, that were used to kill Nigerians in the thousands over the past 5 years? Where are your letters calling for his arrest? No, it is poor, hard-working TB Joshua you see because he is not the respected Cabal. Have you arrested Ali Modu Sheriff? Have you arrested Fayose? Have you arrested Patience Jonathan known as “the greediest person in Bayelsa” who was caught smuggling $13.6 million; money for the poor and poisoned people of Bayelsa, out of Nigeria? Talking about smuggling, have you arrested Ayo Oritsejafor and President Jonathan, the gangsta cash and guns smugglers? Have you arrested Abba Moro, the self confessed possessed-by-the-devil Minister who humiliated all our youth, killed many and again was just exposed in another major scam, robbing Nigerians of billions? No, you have not arrested or insisted on the arrest of all these, but you want to arrest TB Joshua? Have you arrested the Military officers who burned down BRT buses? Have you arrested the soldiers who killed Sheikh Zakzaky’s three sons and 33 other innocent peaceful protesters in Kaduna the other day? Have you arrested Stella Oduah and the manager of Coscharis motors, or you claim not to know that corruption directly leads to the death of millions from poor or unavailable infrastructure, security and all other responsibilities of the government with public funds? Nigeria is a free for all now. Please and please, do not pounce on petty thieves and petty killers. You see poor TB Joshua and you all gather to throw tire and petrol on him and mob beat him because there is something about him you never liked… you were always jealous of him and looked at him as “other.” But you have left the government of Jonathan to continue to lead this nation in reckless abandon; to promote corruption, looting and killing in all facets of the nation. To destroy every single facet of society. You have watched Jonathan promote and encourage stealing as never known before; you have watched him free killers and thieves. Nigeria is a free for all. You have not clamored for the arrest of Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, the king crook in power, guilty of unlimited crimes against humanity and responsible for the veering of Nigeria- all systems- off the cliff finally, but you want to arrest TB Joshua. No petty criminal should ever be punished again. Open all the jails and set them free. If and until we all rise together and chase out the entire master killers and thieves in the Senate and Presidency, please and please, touch not the “anointed.” Only 100 he killed, Diezani killed another 1000 today by stealing money for the construction of their community health centers, and she is there putting make-up on in peace and you are shouting about TB Joshua. |

Abuja - First Lady Patience Jonathan on Monday reiterated the need for love, peace and unity among the people of Rivers. The president’s wife made the appeal when she visited, Chief Peter Odili, a former Rivers governor, to congratulate him for receiving the Commander of the Order of Niger (CON) Award. Other recipients of CON from the state, include Minister of State for Education, Chief Nysom Wike; and Sen. George Sekibo. She said these virtues were the hallmark of Odili’s tenure as the governor of the state. The first lady, who extolled Odili’s virtues, said that the former governor carried everyone along. “I am not surprised at the honour bestowed on you today; it is an honour well deserved, you served well and carried every Rivers person along.” “Everybody knows me as Mama Peace because I believe in peaceful coexistence,” she said. Jonathan urged the people to emulate Odili’s leadership quality and continue to support him. Odili, who spoke on behalf of other recipients from the state, said that since 1967, it was the first time the state would be producing three CON awardees. He expressed his appreciation to the first lady for her love and support to the people. The former governor said this would not have been possible without the hard work, commitment and love expressed by the first lady toward her people. - NAN |

The opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) has called for the immediate arrest and prosecution of Ekiti State Governor-elect, Ayodele Fayose, for allegedly leading a physical assault on a judge. In a statement issued in Lagos on Friday, APC National Publicity Secretary, Lai Mohammed, said the in-coming premier must account for the "dastardly and barbaric attack, which represents an attack on justice and on the rule of law, and the violence that has gripped the state." It said every time a judge had been attacked anywhere in the world, the attackers have been jailed to serve as a deterrent to others who may want to take the laws into their hands, adding: '"The case of the thuggish Fayose should not be different,'' the APC statement read. APC said the attack on Justice John Adeyeye came a few days after pro-Fayose and pro- People's Democratic Part "thugs" invaded a court room in the state state and beat up litigants, among others. ''Even though Fayose has not assumed office, he has succeeded in taking Ekiti State back to Egypt within a few months of his 'election'. Not only are Judges being attacked, the kind of killings and chaos that characterized his first time in charge of the state have already started," APC stated. APC said while Ekiti State Police Commissioner, Taiwo Lakanu, did well by rushing to the venue to help restore order after the judge had been beaten up on Thursday, the overall role of the police in the two attacks was "shameful." ''According to published reports which have yet to be refuted, police personnel stood by while litigants, lawyers and other citizens were being mauled by rabid PDP thugs in the first attack, and again seemed powerless as Justice Adeyeye was being manhandled and his suit torn until the Police Commissioner arrived at the scene," APC stated. It argued such " an act of collusion" was an unacceptable gross incompetence for which those security agents must be brought to book. ''If the police are no longer willing and able to carry out their constitutional duties of protecting the lives and property of the citizenry, then anarchy looms,'' the party warned. It said Nigerians must brace up for a "hellish time" in the hands of the PDP ahead of next year's general elections. ''During his recent trip to New York, President Jonathan assured the international community that next year's elections will be conducted in accordance with global best practices. "Well, it is now clear that the President's assurances are not worth the paper on which they were written, going by the actions of his party members. Global best practices do not include beating up judges, lawyers and litigants!" Comment could not be obtained from the ruling party ahead of publication. - CAJ News News 24 |
