Ojo Aderemi, the last known President of the Students Union Government (SUG) of the University of Ibadan (UI), has been rusticated for four semesters by the management of the institution. The decision was sealed at Wednesday’s sitting of the Student Disciplinary Committee (SDC), where the letters were handed over to him. SaharaReporters understands that Ojo, a 300L student of the Department of History, Faculty of Arts, was accussed of conducting an illegal congress of the union, leading a protest and breaking the glass of an office while a lecturer was inside — allegations that were denied by Ojo. When SaharaReporters sought Ojo’s comments, he said: “The allegations were that I conducted an illegal congress, that we protested and that I said the VC victimized some students who were suspended during my inauguration speech. Those were the allegations. And also they said during the protest that a glass got broken and a lecturer was inside the office when the glass was broken and he was traumatised; well, that's unconnected with the protest. “I've said that before and there was really no objection that was raised that the congress was not illegal. We wrote the Students Representative Council (SRC), it went through the process. So I really don’t know...” SaharaReporters contacted Mr. Olatunji Oladejo, the university’s Director of Public Communication for comments, but he said he had been indisposed for a while. Therefore, he referred our correspondent to Professor Titilayo Ajuwape, the Dean of Student Affairs (DSA). Ajuwape did not answer calls to his two telephone numbers. When he eventually replied a text message to one of those numbers, all he did was direct us to the same Public Relations Officer who referred us to him. However, speaking with SaharaReporters, another professor at the university, who asked not to be named, expressed surprise that at the SDC sitting of Wednesday, the VC was still “visibly angry” even though the protest happened two years ago. “The VC was visibly angry when Ojo’s matter came up on Wednesday. I mean, this was a case that had been on for almost two years now. Then he was still very angry, literally shaking. And I was just wondering, ‘is this matter bigger than this’? “I can tell you that VC actually wanted to expel OJo; and he would have, were it not for the appeal of council members.” Ojo was elected President of UI's SUG on April 29, 2017, and was sworn in on May 8. The protest happened on May 29 and the union was suspended on May 30, meaning he only lasted three weeks and a day in office. The University of Ibadan as a track record of stifling student voices. Notably, there hasn’t been a union since the body was suspended in 2017. The union led by Ojo itself was only approximately five years old, as it was suspended from the early 2000s till 2010 when Professor Isaac Adewole emerged VC (though a President didn’t emerge until 2012), meaning some generations of students passed through the university without enjoying that particular freedom of association. In 2018, the university rusticated Kunle Adebajo, one of the most brilliant student journalists ever to have emerged from the school, for two semesters. Adebajo’s offence was a harmless and indeed factual criticism of the university’s practice of painting halls of residence under the guise of renovation, without an upgrade in quality that is commensurate with the declared millions of naira in costs. Adebajo’s rustication was roundly condemned by numerous alumni and alumnae of the institution.

Ambode Concedes Defeat In Lagos APC Primary Oct 3, 2018 | APC Today, our great party, the All Progressive Congress (APC) had her primary elections in Lagos state, it was a keen contest between myself and my competitor, Mr Jide Sanwo-olu. As usual in any political competition, especially one where all contestants are ably skilled and qualified, the contest was filled with intrigues and strategies of innumerable moves and counter moves. It was a contest of competitors, not a battle of enemies. Members of our Party have spoken, they have said loud and clear that at this time, Sanwo-olu is the person they want to represent us all in the forth coming general elections in 2019. This brings to an end the primary elections. We now have to fuse together as one, to forge ahead in unity of purpose to ensure that our state does not fall into the hands of the other parties whose stock in trade is corruption and/or incompetence. I would follow in the tradition of our party, and footstep of my great predecessor, Babatunde Raji Fashola, who despite not having his way during the 2015 primaries, still went ahead to give me his 100% support. I would also be at the fore front in the support of my erudite brother, Babajide Sanwo-olu. I am hereby directing that all Ambode support group structures be collapsed into the Sanwo-olu structure, which i believe would in time also be collapsed into the overall APC campaign structure. I thank the people of Lagos State for giving me the opportunity to have led in the past 4 years. There have been lessons learnt and insights gained. I thank the party leaders both at state and federal level, especially Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and President Muhammadu buhari for their leadership roles in the party. Because "Eko o baje" , that was why "itesiwaju Eko je wa logun", now let's all go out there as one inseparable broom and "Sanwo Eko". OYO 2019: CONSIDERING CHIEF ADENIYI AKINTOLA SAN, A MAN OF GIANT STRIVES Every human, anywhere in the world should have access to certain amenities - food, healthcare, shelter, clothing and education. Some call it basic human needs, others call it social welfare, but we believe they are basic rights of every individual. Just as everyone has the right to life, they deserve the right to primary healthcare, to - at the very least, take care of that life. In Nigeria, the government is responsible for these social protection programs, affirming the age old latin dictum - 'salus suprema les', the welfare of the people is the Supreme law. However, while government is doing their very best, there is still more to be done. Access to quality, primary healthcare is pivotal to living a productive life, and this is still very much lacking in Nigeria. World Health Organization reports that one in every five child dies before the age of five, the Human Development Index puts Nigerian's life expectancy at 48 years, mortality rate in Nigeria is very high, and all these are not in any way surprising, as access to healthcare in Nigeria is still very low. Prof. Olukoye Ransome-Kuti of blessed memory ardently advocated for the establishment of primary healthcare centers in Nigeria after the Alma ata declaration in 1971, however, those healthcare centers are now deplorable to say the least. While ruminating these myriads of challenges in our society, there are still some unique and extraordinary people who don't complain nor refuse to give helping hands, but decided to take action so as to complement Government efforts. Some few years back, Chief Adeniyi Akintola (SAN), a philanthropist, lawyer and a political scientist donated a cottage hospital at Omi-adio, a Suburb along Ibadan - Abeokuta road which worth several millions of naira to the Nigerian Baptist Convention for effective and proper management so as to cater for the health of people in that community. The hospital has state of the art facilities like por table water system, Doctor's lodge, Pharmaceutical store, theatre room and many others essential facilities. While we must salute Chief Akintola for this heroic and kind act. We need to ask ourselves some questions like. How many more of Chief Akintola do we need to move this nation forward? The truth is, while individuals can attempt to make a difference in their own spheres of influence, only government can do much more to bring the change we truly desire. Because while few drops of water can one day make an ocean, why wait for eternity when we can make the ocean our selves. All we are saying in essence is that while it is good we have philanthropists all around, it is better to have them in governance. That way, they have more resources to do more good. With more men with the kind of heart Chief Akintola has, we can truly build a nation of our dreams. If he could do this as a private citizen, he could do better as a public citizen. And with just few hours to APC Governorship primary Nationwide. One of the men we need to consider is Chief Adeniyi Akintola SAN. He deserves to fly the party ticket in Oyo State. He has stood by the party both in the good and bad times from inception till this present moment which shows that he is not a neophtye but a professional politician. The foundation of any meaningful development in any society is peace and it has been laid by the incumbent Governor, Senator Isiaka Ajimobi. What Oyo needs now is someone who can sustain the noble legacy of the incumbent governor. Someone who is creative, competent and visionary. All these sterling attributes can be found in Chief Adeniyi Michael Akintola SAN (Bamofin of Ibadan Land). Oyo State can be greater and move forward at a rapid speed if we support an Health literate, Economy Literate, Political literate, Social literate and Legal literate as Governor of the Pacesetters state. Oyo...Lo siwaju Akintola ni joo, Akintola ni jaree
