Tragedy struck on Thursday at Ijegun Road in the Alimosho area of Lagos State, after a woman, Idongesit Ekpo, and her husband, Godwin, were shot by a team of policemen attached to the Isheri Osun Police Division. Idongesit died on the spot, while Godwin was said to be gasping for breath at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja, where he was taken for treatment. It was gathered that the couple was returning from a church programme on Wednesday in a tricycle belonging to the family when the incident happened. Punch reports that Godwin met a police checkpoint at Obalagbe bus stop, where some other tricycle drivers were being reportedly extorted by an eight-man police team. Godwin ignored the police after he was flagged down and he sped past. One of the officers angrily broke his windscreen with a baton. A police corporal, identified as Aremu Musesiu, was said to have opened fire on the tricycle. It was learnt that the bullet pierced through the tricycle back side and hit Idongesit, who was breast-feeding a three-month-old baby. Her husband, Godwin, who looked back when the shot was fired, was said to have also been hit in the neck. The policemen hurriedly took money from the tricycle drivers they had earlier detained, before they vanished from the scene. The incident attracted the attention of tricycle drivers in the community who trooped out on Thursday to protest the death and demanded justice for the victims. The protesters held placards, with inscriptions such as, ‘Isheri Police, your generation will suffer,’ ‘Stop killing us,’ among others. The Financial Secretary of the Committee for the Defence of Human Rights, Lagos State branch, Chinanzor Ifechiga, was brutalised and her telephone seized by the Divisional Police Officer. Ifechiga, who was accused of filming the protest and taking pictures, was manhandled by eight policemen, who struggled to take the phone from her on the order of the DPO. A tricycle driver, Henry Chibuzor, said the couple was shot at around 10pm on Wednesday. He said, “I was going home around 10pm when I saw the eight-man team asking me to stop at a checkpoint. I was there with four other tricycle drivers. “The man was coming from church with his family. As he got to the junction, he swerved and his tricycle mistakenly brushed their patrol van. “A policeman hit the tricycle’s windscreen with a baton and damaged it. The second policeman fired a bullet which hit the woman in the neck, came out from the other side, and hit her husband too.” He said the policemen collected N5,000 from him and also extorted money from other tricycle drivers. The Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni, who confirmed the incident, said Aremu had been arrested and detained. He added that the DPO of Isheri Osun had also been issued a query for disobeying the Inspector General of Police’s instruction. He said, “The police are doing all in our capacity to ensure that the deceased’s children are taken care of. The police corporal involved has been taken into custody. When we complete all necessary disciplinary action, he will be charged to court for murder. “The team leader and the DPO of Isheri Osun division have also been issued queries for disobeying the IG with regards to policemen performing duties out of uniform, and without a properly-labelled police van.” http://dailypost.ng/2015/09/18/policemen-shoot-at-couple-kill-wife-for-refusing-to-pay-bribe/

The Director of Media and Publicity of Oodua People’s Congress, (OPC) led by Otunba Gani Adams, Barrister Yinka Oguntimehin, has condemned the gruesome killing of 10 members of State Security Operatives by pipeline vandals in Isawo, Ikorodu , Lagos state. Oguntimehin in a release made available to the media in Lagos on Thursday described the action of the vandals as “highly condemnable” and “brazen in its criminality which is injurious to the national psyche only perpetrated by sub – human beings who are not fit to live.” He lamented that, “it is sad that some miscreants who are being financed by a sinisterly powerful and deadly oil mafia have put paid to the lives and brilliant carriers of 10 wondrous well trained members of the Department of State Security Services.” Oguntimehin pointed out that the death of those men of honour at the point of service in such a gruesome circumstance was a pointer to the fact that the war against pipeline vandals is not a tea party’s affair which can be taken or approached with kid’s glove “The death of the bright DSS operatives though sad and sorrowful is a testimony to the fact that the war against pipeline vandals and protection of our common wealth should not be localized within the confine of the regular security agents alone “ “This unfortunate event should kindled our sense of perception and reasoning and task patriotic feeling in us to always treat national issues without sentiment.” He charged the Federal government that it, ”must realized that oil pipeline vandalism has grown from being a past time of petty and tiny miscreants of the society, it is has assumed an organized high level criminality dimension being controlled by powerful and blood tasting mafia who cannot not be dislodged solely by the regular security agencies.” Mr Oguntimehin suggested that “it is high time for the Federal government to stop being mono focal in its effort at putting a stop to the activities of vandals with the regimentation to the belief that only the regular trained security agencies can do it. ” He pointed out that, “The recent , three months monitoring of the pipeline by private groups has proved to all that the engagement of the so called irregular or the socio – cultural groups brought modicum of stability and sanity to pipeline vandalism. This is a pointer to the fact that the war against pipeline vandalism should not be restricted to the regular armed forces.” “As it is , the Federal government should confront this dare devilry act of pipeline vandalism by involving both the regular armed agencies and the socio-cultural groups which have been tried and successfully monitored the pipelines without major calamity and waste of human resources like this.” He therefore called on the Federal government to set up a dual joint action task force which should include the regular security agencies and the socio-cultural group to combat the deadly activities of pipeline vandals in Nigeria. Barrister Oguntimehin while commiserating with the Nation over the death of the DSS operatives tasked the security agencies to fish out the perpetrators of the gruesome murder. http://dailypost.ng/2015/09/17/opc-condemns-killing-of-dss-operatives-by-pipeline-vandals/

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, on Wednesday vowed to implement the recommendations of the Justice George Omereji-led judicial commission of inquiry. He had constituted the panel to probe the sale of Rivers’ assets and to also look into other matters concerning the management of state resources by the past administration. Wike lamented the level of alleged financial crimes committed with impunity under ex-Governor Rotimi Amaechi, adding that the criticism against the panel will not deter him from punishing all those found culpable. Wike, in a statement signed by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Opunabo Inko-Tariah, said he was not the first to establish a commission of inquiry. According to him, Amaechi, set up the Justice Kayode Esho commission of inquiry and added that former governor Peter Odili appeared before the panel. He dismissed the allegations that the Omereji-led commission of inquiry was established purposely to indict Amaechi, adding that the panel was set up based on the relevant laws of the state. “The implementation of the commission’s recommendations shall be devoid of fear or favour, affection or ill will. The refusal to appear before the panel is an admission of guilt. The allegation that the Justice Omereji’s commission of inquiry is a subterfuge to indict Rotimi Amaechi suffers from the eclipse of reasoning and poverty of logic. “Amaechi set up the Justice Kayode Esho’s commission and when former governor Peter Odili was invited, he obliged despite the fact that Justice Esho had made some uncomplimentary remarks about a perpetual injunction concerning Odili,” Wike said. Wike condemned the All Progressives Congress in the state for its position on the commission of inquiry, wondering why his predecessor did not properly hand over to him. He said, “The Omereji’s panel was set up to probe the expenditures made by Amaechi’s government, which is what any responsible government will do because the taxpayers’ money is not for one man, especially when certain financial transactions are opaque. “It is even more important when the outgoing administration demurred to hand over or when there are no handover notes. The welter of criticisms by the APC in Rivers State is actuated by the fear of exposure. It is just hocus-pocus. “Governor Wike inherited a hobbling economy and a suffocating treasury. He provided the life-saving machine and today, the state is recuperating. The sittings (of the panel) were not done clandestinely and all that was expected of Amaechi and his acolytes was for them to appear and prove their innocence.” Wike, added that in establishing a panel of inquiry, he took a cue from President Muhammadu Buhari, “an embodiment of probity and rectitude”, who is also looking into how public funds were spent under the last administration. http://dailypost.ng/2015/09/17/i-am-probing-amaechi-same-way-buhari-is-scrutinizing-jonathans-tenure-wike-2/
