No one in Iruwa ever forgot the night laughter broke the sky. It began at exactly 11:47 p.m. Mara was still awake, counting the cracks on her ceiling, when she heard it one sharp laugh, clean and bright, slicing through the silence. It didn’t sound drunk. It didn’t sound cruel. It sounded… happy. Too happy for a town that buried joy long ago. She sat up. Another laugh followed. Then another. Different voices. Old. Young. Male. Female. They rose from different directions, like invisible sparks igniting all at once. Within seconds, the entire town echoed with laughter rolling, layered, endless. Mara rushed to the window. Lights flicked on across the street. Doors creaked open. People stepped outside, confused, some smiling despite themselves. Even the man who hadn’t spoken since his son vanished was laughing now, clutching his stomach like he’d just heard the world’s greatest joke. But Mara wasn’t laughing. Because she recognized one of the voices. Her mother’s. Her mother had died three years earlier. The laughter grew louder, swelling into something unnatural. It bounced off walls, slipped under doors, crawled into the ears of those who tried to hide. Some people dropped to their knees, laughing until tears streaked their faces. Others laughed until they couldn’t breathe. Mara ran. She followed the sound to the old clock tower at the center of town the place everyone avoided since the fire. The iron door was open, swinging gently, as if inviting her in. Inside, the laughter gathered. It wasn’t random. It was stored. Thousands of voices swirled in the air, circling a glowing mass at the center of the room. Memories she realized. Every laugh ever silenced in Iruwa. Every joy swallowed by grief, fear, and unspoken pain. The town had been hoarding sorrow for decades, and tonight, it overflowed. A figure stepped forward. The Watchman. Ancient, thin, eyes glowing with reflected joy. “You cannot bury happiness forever,” he said softly. “It ferments.” Mara covered her ears, but her own laughter escaped raw, broken, unstoppable. She laughed for her mother, for herself, for everything the town had lost. It hurt. It healed. At dawn, the laughter stopped. People woke on their floors, hoarse and exhausted, unsure if it had been a dream. The clock tower was sealed again. Silent. But something had changed. Neighbors smiled more. Strangers spoke. Children laughed real laughter, not echoes. And sometimes, late at night, if the wind is right, Mara swears she hears it again. Not a thousand laughs. Just one. Waiting. |
