Boko Haram has lured young entrepreneurs and business owners in the North-East geopolitical zone to join the Islamist militant group by providing or promising capital and loans to boost their businesses, aid agency Mercy Corps said on Monday.

Seeing successful business ownership as a way to escape poverty, many Nigerian youths – ranging from butchers and beauticians to tailors and traders – accepted loans for their businesses in return for joining Boko Haram, Mercy Corps said.

Yet the lure of business support is often a trap, as those who cannot repay their loans are forced to join the militants or be killed, said the report from the U.S.-based aid agency.

“Boko Haram is tapping into the yearnings of Nigerian youth to get ahead in an environment of massive inequality,” said report author and Mercy Corps peace-building adviser, Lisa Inks.

“It is incredibly clever – either such loans breed loyalty or Boko Haram use mafia– style tactics to trap and force young people to join them,” Inks told the Thomson Reuters Foundation.

Six in 10 Nigerians live in absolute poverty, on less than one dollar a day, a figure which rises to three quarters of the population in the northeast of the country, according to the latest statistics from the National Bureau of Statistics.

Many young people told Mercy Corps they would struggle without the support of powerful “godfathers” to provide capital for their businesses, or cash transfers for equipment and goods.

Boko Haram has therefore been able to fill a critical gap in financial services, said Mercy Corps, which conducted interviews with 145 people including young former Boko Haram members, family of former members, and youths who resisted joining.

The report called for increased access to financial and business services, more support for conflict-hit communities and greater efforts to reintegrate people who have fled Boko Haram.

Women and girls freed from Boko Haram are subjected to discrimination, rejection and persecution from their families and communities when they return home, said a recent report by International Alert and the U.N. children’s agency, UNICEF.

ABUJA, June 14 U.S. fund manager Pecora Capital said on Tuesday it will raise $2 billion over the next 18 months for Nigerian infrastructure projects, a rare show of investor confidence during a period of deep crisis in Africa's largest economy.

Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari is trying to attract foreign direct investment to help support an economy that slipped into contraction in the first quarter this year as lower oil prices hammered Africa's largest crude exporter.

A string of attacks on oil pipelines by militants in the restive Niger Delta has compounded Nigeria's economic problems and many investors have complained about the poor current business environment.

"As a long-term investor we see a time of crisis as an opportunity," Aaron Smith, Managing Director of Pecora, told Reuters. He expected the fund to achieve returns of 25 percent a year over its 7-year lifespan.

A more than halving of oil prices since 2014 has sapped the supply of foreign currency in Nigeria, making it difficult for businesses to import basic equipment or for foreigners to repatriate dollars, raising the risks for investors.

Nigeria still relies on oil exports for around 90 percent of foreign exchange earnings and 70 percent of government revenues.

"I understand that is a concern and we've thought about it but we definitely don't foresee over the timeframe we've set out that we'll have any problems getting money out of the country," Smith said.

"The fundamentals and demographics in Nigeria, in terms of population, in terms of infrastructure deficits, all offer huge opportunity and the availability of high returns."

Pecora is a privately-owned firm and does not disclose its assets under management or previous performance, he said.

Smith said areas of possible investment included agriculture, telecommunications and transport as the fund hopes to take advantage of the huge demand for improved infrastructure in a country of around 190 million people.

Clearly this album’s opening week is small fry compared to the impact that ‘TPAB’ had but it’s worth celebrating. For a project that had no promotion to top the charts in the age of the Adels of this world who hang on to No. 1 for centuries, Kendrick has proven he is truly the "King Kunta".

Kelly Rowland is on the hunt for the next big girl group. The Destiny’s Child graduate is teaming up with BET to launch ‘Chasing Destiny’, a televised search to find the next superstar female group. Kelly will be joined by award-winning choreographer Frank Gatson Jr on the one-hour weekly show. Gatson is no doubt
the best voice of influence on the show. The man has a long working history with Rowland and Beyoncé and has also worked with Michael Jackson, Usher and Jennifer Lopez. “We’re seeing rough cuts of diamonds right now. That’s how I like to picture it,” says Rowland about the process. “You can’t expect somebody to come in polished. And that’s the most exciting part: being able to be part of that moulding process.” Talking about how the idea came about, Ms Kelly told Billboard it was Frank’s idea. “We were going to do this whether TV cameras were with us or not. We were going to have our own cameras. But after talking to Stephen Hill(BET president of programming), he said he’d like to be a part of the show. ABOUT 172 Nigerians were yesterday deported from Libya for the breach of the country’s immigration laws. Those deported included 166 males and six females. They arrived Nigeria through the Hajj wing of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport around 7:00am via a chartered aircraft from Libya. Spokesman for the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) Mr. Ekpedeme King told Aviation correspondents that the deportees were returned to the country for staying beyond the dates, which were stipulated in their visas in Libya and for other immigration offences in the North African country, which he didn’t state. “What I can tell you is that some Nigerians were deported today (yesterday) for immigration offences. Most of those brought overstayed in Libya,” King said.
