The man with the blueprint of how to bring Nigeria out of the woods, is the man Rochas Okorocha
Politics / 2023: Can Rochas Be The Way Out? by Optapidgin: 3:02pm On Feb 17, 2022
Former President Ibrahim Babangida in a recent interview gave a quite optimistic projection of the kind of person who should be Nigeria’s next president.

Politics in the country has come to the crossroads. More and more Nigerians have come to see the wisdom in statecraft. Better to have a president who helps bring food to the table i.e. earn enough money to provide the basic necessities for oneself and one’s family. There are some who still bend to the illusory preferential option for the kinsman. So, it’s merit Vs zoning.

Interestingly though, both sides of the divide have proponents who think that for the sake of fairness, equity, even for justice and such values that promote peace and order, an ethnic Igbo person should get the next turn at the presidency this time. This is the loudest, the most sober and sensible view. The influential Sultan, Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar thinks so from Sokoto. The pragmatist reformer and current Governor of Kaduna State, Mallam Nasir El Rufai likewise agrees that it should be the turn of the southeast now.

When the Igbos have had their shot, then Nigeria can evolve from turn-by-turn presidency to merit as the overarching criterion.

Thus on the whole, there seems a fair consensus of opinion that the presidency goes to the Igbos this once. So what then?

The problem actually is the incapacity of the Igbo political elite to inspire consensus around a viable candidate and then throw their weight behind him or her.

Owelle Rochas Okorocha has shown remarkable imagination and innovation in his declaration to run. A former governor and presently a senator, he has had a more than successful run in business and entrepreneurship. Plus he has shown a milk of kindness in his widespread charities and beneficent foundations. No matter what one may say, Rochas is not perfect but he has the pedigree suitable to do the job.

To recap, there is a growing political concurrence that it is only fair for the presidency to be zoned to the southeast. Even those who in principle would prefer merit to the option of zoning believe that if for no other reason than the sake of equity and fair play, someone of Igbo ethnicity be president this time. After that, all parties can throw their doors open and allow for only the criterion of merit and suitability.

One standard ex-president Babangida proffered for the next commander-in-chief was the candidate’s familiarity or association with diverse parts of the country. Okorocha has that in the bag. With deep roots in the north and eloquent in Hausa, he has roots and association in and with almost all parts of the federation.

Where it is not consanguinity, then it is business ties or some form of interrelation. In fact, a lot of the arguments made against him prove to be reasonable as to why he should be the next president.

Politics / Timi Frank Urges EFCC Chair, Bawa Not To Disappoint Youths by Optapidgin: 9:11am On Feb 25, 2021
Political Activist, Comrade Timi Frank, has called on the Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Abdulrasheed Bawa, to make the positive overhaul and transformation of the agency his cardinal goal.

Frank in a statement in Abuja congratulated Bawa on his confirmation for appointment by the Senate even as he pleaded with Bawa who is 40 years old not to disappoint the youths.

The former Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), lauded Bawa for acknowledging the fact that his appointment is a hope raiser for youths in governance.

“As a youth, you cannot afford to fail in this noble assignment. You can only succeed if you stay focused and work in the national interest,” the Bayelsa-born political activist said.

He said it was time for the anti-graft body to conscientiously and faithfully discharge its constitutional responsibilities of checkmating corruption towards enhancing national development.

“The primary mandate of the EFCC is to curtail corruption both in public and private spaces. This ideal must not be lost on you as its chief executive officer.

“The EFCC should work for Nigeria and Nigerians, not a few privileged persons in position of authority. Fight corruption everywhere and not in selected places or persons.

“We look forward to an EFCC that would work to enthrone probity, transparency and accountability in all facet of our national life.

“We want an EFCC that will not single out members of one political party or ethnic group for investigation and prosecution or persecution.

“Anybody suspected to have abused his office by helping himself from the public purse should be investigated and prosecuted irrespective of his political leaning, ethnicity or creed.

“We want an EFCC that would be accountable and transparent in its dealings as an agency while fighting to ensure accountability and probity in public service and private sector.

“We want an EFCC that would be disciplined, apolitical and that operates within the ambits of the laws of the land.

“As a youth, your success or failure would either motivate or demotivate Nigerian youths estimated at 64 million by the National Bureau of Statistics in its 2012 National Youth Baseline Survey report.

“Work in such a manner that Nigerians, especially the youths, will say ‘we are proud of EFCC under Bawa!’

“Let your assumption of office mark the end of impunity, utter disregard for the rule of law and abuse of the fundamental human rights of citizens by operatives of the Commission.

“Learn from the successes and failures of your predecessors in office. Eight years is not forever!

“Let your tenure herald a blaze of glory and not hailstones of condemnation for the agency. Your address during your confirmation hearing shows that have all it takes to succeed and Nigerian youths are looking forward to the positive transformation of the agency under your leadership.

“Don’t be swayed by accolades or dazed by condemnations because uneasy lies the head that wears the crown. Restore the lost glory of the Commission by changing its present negative narratives to positive.

“Know that the agency is greater than individual operatives. Operatives will come and go but the EFCC will remain. Work for the agency. Work for the country. Work for posterity,” Frank declared.

He assured the EFCC chief of the preparedness of Nigerian youths to partner with him to succeed in the anti-corruption war.

“Be rest assured that the youths are willing to support you to succeed in the fight against corruption and I urge to give them the opportunity to do so.

“However, the youths will not also fail to criticise your action or inaction that may deviate or offend their high hopes and enthusiasm of having one of theirs in that crucial position,” he declared.

Politics / Timi Frank: Confirmation Of Ex-Service Chiefs As Ambassadors A Betrayer Of Trust by Optapidgin: 10:34am On Feb 24, 2021
Former Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Comrade Timi Frank, on Wednesday, condemned the Senate’s confirmation of the immediate past Service Chiefs as ambassadors in strong terms.

Frank in a statement in Abuja, described the approval given by the upper chamber to the same ex-military top shots it had severally rejected and called for their sack over incompetence as a gross betrayal of the people’s trust.

The Bayelsa-born political activist insisted that the action of the Senate smacks of raising personal gain above the wishes and aspirations of the generality of Nigerians who have spoken out strongly against the wrongful and ill-advised nomination of the ex-military leaders as ambassadors by President Muhammadu Buhari.

He described the 9th Senate as the worst upper chamber since the advent of democracy in the country “as it is populated by lawmakers who have elevated their ego and personal interest far above the national interest.”

He said that he is not surprised that despite opposition to the confirmation by the minority caucus , the APC dominated chamber went ahead to act in an unpatriotic and anti-people manner just to please their paymasters in the Villa who had earlier doled out the sum of $100,000.00 each to the lawmakers to secure their cooperation.

While commending the opposition lawmakers, especially the Senate Minority Leader, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, for speaking the minds of majority of Nigerians who will continue to oppose the gross abuse of power by the Buhari administration, he declared that posterity will judge the present crop of APC Senators very poorly.

“The injury that these set of senators have inflicted on the psyche of Nigerians is greater than the atrocities being perpetrated against the country by Boko Haram, kidnappers and bandits,” Frank said.

He vowed that Nigerians in diaspora would not fail to receive the envoys with protests in countries they would be assigned while calling on members of the international community to reject their posting.

He added: “We will not rest until the present administration learns to respect the will of the people. The 9th Senate has acted in shame by prioritizing personal gain above the general good.

“Confirming the same set of officers it called for their sack more than thrice over incompetence in mitigating insecurity in the country as serving military top echelon is an egregious evil from Senators against the long suffering taxpayers from whose sweat they are being lavishly funded.

“This confirmation shows a Senate chamber that has lost its mettle, completely sold out, rudderless, unfocused and driven by avarice rather than the overall interest of their constituents in particular and the country in general.

“How can men who failed to bring Nigeria any respite against criminal gangs despite vast arms and ammunitions at their disposal as military chiefs now be relied upon to win the country laurels through diplomacy which has been regarded as a war by other means?

“Clearly, Buhari made a mistake by nominating failed officers for ambassadorial positions. The Senate has compounded that mistake by approving the nominations. Nigeria and Nigerians will definitely be worse for it.

“History will not forget the 9th Senate and by extension the 9th National Assembly for being notorious lawmakers who subsumed the legislature under the executive by casting overboard the inherent checks and balances that safeguard democratic governance from becoming a dictatorship.”

He called on Nigerian voters to reward the APC Senators by voting them out of office during the 2023 general elections.

Politics / Emeka Kalu Calls For Probe Of Akpabio, Akwa Over N22billion NDDC Funds & Bride by Optapidgin: 3:34pm On Feb 23, 2021
Emeka Kalu calls for probe of Akpabio, Akwa over N22billion NDDC funds, N100m bribe

A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Engineer Emeka Kalu has called for a thorough investigation of alleged squandering of a whopping N22 billion by Senator Godswill Akpabio, who is the Minister for Niger Delta Affairs, and the Sole Administrator of the Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, Effiong Okon Akwa.

Kalu also expressed support for the ongoing investigation of allegation of attempting to bribe some officials of the Code of Conduct Bureau, CCB by Akpabio.

Kalu in a statement he signed himself, and made available to Jungle Journalist Media Limited via electronic mail, said that the current corruption charges against Akpabio are one too many, and must not be ignored.

Kalu who sent the mail from the United States of America, warned that the Minister and the Sole Administrator of NDDC, Akwa must not be allowed to get away with the alleged massive fraud which he said has further impoverished people of the Niger Delta.

Hear him: "We are appalled at the high level of corruption cases against Misters Akpabio and Akwa, who heads the Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs, and the NDDC. What's really tragic in the whole matter is that the funds being squandered have been allocated for the upliftment of the people of Niger Delta.

"But these two men sit on our money and dare us. I hereby call for a thorough investigation of these men, whom it has become obvious are far from being honest. Pregnancy cannot be hidden forever, and anyone whose hands are not clean should be tried and jailed for corruption.

"I hereby call on the present administration not to relent in its efforts to curb corrupt practices in this country, and to ensure that justice is served against those who have committed fraud on behalf of the people of the Niger Delta, as well As Nigerians across the gkobe", he started in parts.

Recall that a Federal Commissioner in CCB, Ehiozuwa Johnson Agbonayinma on Monday, 22nd February 2021 told newsmen that his subcommittee is currently investigating the allegation of N100 million bribe against Akpabio.

According to media reports, Akapabio allegedly offered bribe to the CCB officials to give a “soft landing” to Sole Administrator of Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Mr Efiong Okon Akwa over discrepancies in his asset declaration form.

Agbonayinma said the Bureau was looking at the accusation first made against Mr Akpabio by Jackson Ude on Twitter.

“We have been given a mandate by the bureau to investigate the allegation against some officials of CCB that we saw on social media. Let me be specific, one Mr Jackson Ude twitted, and it went viral, that money was given to some officials of CCB by Akpabio. Because of that, a committee to investigate the allegation was set up, with myself as the chairman,” he said.

The embattled Minister, Godswill Akpabio and Effiong Okon Akwa (Sole Administrator of NDDC) were recently accused of having squandered N22billion released to the agency by the Federal Government.

It was also alleged that the Minister is building a multibillion naira mansion in Abuja, and would soon take delivery of two private jets bought on his behalf by a front, one Dubem Obaze.

Politics / Civil Society Groups In Delta Calls For Removal Of Interim Management Committee by Optapidgin: 7:46pm On Jun 18, 2020
#AkpabioMustGo: Civil Society Groups in Niger Delta Calls For removal of the Interim Management Committee

Conduct and Due Process Group in collaboration with Niger Delta Youth Advocates for Development and other civil society groups in the Niger Delta region call for the removal of the Interim Management Committee and declare it illegal.

The protesters have written to the Inspector General of police informing the Nigerian Police of their intention to conduct a peaceful assembly at the premises of NDDC in all NDDC member states and at the premises of the National Assembly and the Channels Television in Lagos.

The organizers are calling for the removal of NDDC from the control of the Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs and from Godswill Akpabio’s control as it is illegal.

The protesters would also be calling for the removal of Godswill Akpabio as Minister of Niger Delta affairs after being alleged of mismanagement of N40 Billion naira.

Remember on May 5, 2020 Tuesday, the two chambers of the National Assembly had resolved to probe the alleged N40 billion financial recklessness of the Interim Management Committee (IMC) of the NDDC in the last three months.

Responding, Akpabio, whose ministry supervises the NDDC, in a statement entitled “Re: National Assembly probes alleged N40bn corruption in NDDC”, issued on Friday May 8 2020 by his Chief Press Secretary, Anietie Ekong, explained that under the supervision of the Niger Delta Affairs ministry, no corruption has been recorded in the NDDC.

The protesters are agitating under these three hashtags, #WHEREISOUR40BILLION, #AKPABIOMUSTGO, #DISBANDNDDCIMC.
