PoliticsMaitama Sule, Kwande, Ikedife To Meet Pro-biafran Agitators by ORACLE1975(op): 10:17am On Dec 10, 2015
Eminent Nigerians from the North, South-South and South-East geopolitical zones are putting finishing touches to plans to dialogue with pro-Biafran agitators.

The Minority Leader of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, revealed this at a meeting involving some elder statesmen in Abuja, on Wednesday.

According to him, the elders who were drawn from the North, South-East and South-South geopolitical zones of the country were in Abuja, to proffer solutions to the growing threat posed by the renewed pro-Biafran agitation.

Some of the eminent persons at the meeting include a former Nigerian Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Maitama Sule, a former Ambassador to Spain, Alhaju Yahaya Kwande, ex-Military Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Air Commodore Idongesit Nkanga (retd.) and a former President of the Ohanaeze Nd’igbo and Ikenga Nnewi, Dr. Dozie Ikedife.

Akpabio noted that the eminent persons under the leadership of Maitama Sule, were concerned about the nation’s unity.

Akpabio said, “This is a gathering of concerned Nigerian elders led by Maitama Sule, a one-time Ambassador, a great statesman and a true Nigerian.

“You see the calibre of persons from the South, this forum is for elders to attempt to proffer solutions to the emerging trends of insecurity in the South-East that seems to be seeping into the South-South.

“They are very concerned about Boko Haram in the North-East and the resurgence of the pro-Biafran movement. If we allow this to fester, it will do Nigeria no good.

“They feel that this is not a problem for the government alone because the ripple effect of it will affect all citizens. You can see what happened in the case of Boko Haram it started in Borno now it is in Gombe and the states in the North-East.”

The Senate minority leader noted that Nigerians of goodwill should contribute their quota towards finding a lasting solution to this growing threat.

He stressed that what was required was a conscious effort towards ensuring that issues raised were dealt with through dialogue.

Akpabio said this, “is a meeting of experienced people who love Nigeria who feel that anything that will lead to the unity of Nigeria should be encouraged.”

Commenting about plans by the elders to set up a committee, he said, “I hear them even talking about setting up a committee to reach out to the grassroots.”

PoliticsMimiko Urges Unity Among Yoruba Leaders by ORACLE1975(op): 5:36am On Dec 09, 2015
The Ondo State Governor, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, and other leaders of the Afenifere, have once again called on President Muhammadu Buhari to urgently implement the resolutions of the 2014 National Conference.

Mimiko also called for the unity of the Yoruba leaders in the South-West irrespective of their political or religious affiliations.

The governor said this on Tuesday during a Yoruba summit which has as its theme, “Economic Downturn and Employment in Yorubaland,” held at the International Event Centre, Akure, the Ondo State capital.

Mimiko said, “The overreaching recommendation of the confab was the need for political restructuring. This is to retain a federal system of government with states as the federating units, with all the powers and resources thereto.

“It would allow states that wish to merge to do so in accordance with the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended), a possibility that is no longer too far-fetched given the financial crises in which most states of the federation have now found themselves.

“The restructuring would also accommodate the establishment of state police to enhance national security. In the economic domain, exploitation of solid minerals would be taken from the Exclusive Legislative list, such that states would be able to harness the solid minerals in their jurisdictions, thus creating employment, generating more revenue and developing at their own pace.

Some of the Yoruba leaders who attended the summit include Pa Rueben Fasonrati, Pa Ayo Adebanjo, Chief Olanihun Ajayi, Bishop Bolanle Gbonigi, Chief Olu Falae, Brig. Gen. Raji Rasaki (retd.), Dr. Kunle Olajide and Chief Sehinde Arogbofa.

All the Yoruba leaders who spoke at the summit insisted that the President must implement the recommendation of the 2014 national confab’s recommendation.

They said failure to do this would make the country to continue in stagnation.

The guest speaker, Dr. Yemi Farounmbi, asked the South-West governors to solve the unemployment problem confronting the youths in Yorubaland through the creation of small and medium scale enterprises at the local government level.

Adebanjo, in his remarks, said anyone who loved the unity of the country should not oppose the confab report.

The Afenifere chieftain said, “If President Muhammadu Buhari is sincere about the peace and unity of this country he should implement the recommendation of the confab report. “

Also, the Leader of the Odua Peoples Congress, Mr. Gani Adams, accused President Buhari of insensitivity over the restructuring of the country.

He stressed that the only way for the country to progress was for it to undergo restructuring.

“President Buhari does not believe in restructuring of this country, and without the restructuring, there is no way out for the country to move forward,” he said.

CrimeEFCC Accuses Man Of Swallowing $115,000 by ORACLE1975(op): 5:13am On Dec 09, 2015
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has charged one Onwuasonya Augustine to court for allegedly swallowing $115,000 to avoid declaring it to officials of the Nigeria Customs Service at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos.

Augustine was on Tuesday arraigned along with five others for the offence of money laundering.

The anti-graft agency listed his alleged accomplices as Christian Okoli, Kingsley Nwokenta, aka Buchito, Nwokenta Emmanuel, Ezenwa Ikenna and Ezenwa Uzoma.

The six were charged with four counts before Justice C.J. Aneke of a Federal High Court in Lagos.

The EFCC prosecutor, Ayokunle Fayanju, alleged that Onwuasonya and the others committed the offence on August 25, 2015, adding that they were apprehended at Room 303 of a five-star hotel in Lagos.

Fayanju said the men acted contrary to Section 18(a) of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act, 2011 (as amended by Act No. 1 of 2012, and were liable to being punished under Section 2(5) of the same Act.

The sixth accused, Uzoma, was singularly charged with the offence of obstructing an NDLEA official, Bello Tsanya, in the discharge of his duty, which, according to Fayanju, is against the provisions of Section 22 of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act, 2011 (as amended by Act No. 1 of 2012).

The prosecutor said Uzoma was liable to being punished under the provisions of Section 22(a) of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act, 2011 (as amended by Act No. 1 of 2012).

But when the charges were read to the six accused in court, they all pleaded not guilty.

The prosecutor said, “In view of the plea of the accused, I respectfully pray the honourable court for a trial date to enable us bring our witnesses. However, I will also be praying that the accused persons be remanded in prison pending trial.”

But the counsel for the 1st to 5th accused, Mr. Victor Opara, told the court that he had filed bail applications on their behalf and sought short adjournment for the hearing of the applications.

He, however, urged the judge to order the remand of the accused in the EFCC custody pending the hearing of their bail applications, rather than the prison custody.

Opara pointed out that the 2nd defendant had health challenges, which were being treated while he was in the custody of the EFCC and asked the court to remand him and the others in the EFCC custody so that they could have easy access to treatment and lawyers.

But Fayanju urged the court to reject the prayer to remand the accused in the EFCC custody, saying the commission’s detention facility was overstretched.

Justice Aneke adjourned till December 11, 2015, to take the bail applications of the accused and ordered their remand at the Ikoyi Prison.

CrimeConductor Kills Man A Week To US Travel by ORACLE1975(op):
Babatunde Omoyeni, a web designer who planned to spend his Christmas and New Year celebrations in the United States of America, has been killed in Lagos over N50.
He was to travel on December 10.
After obtaining all travel documents, the 38-year-old decided to go clubbing with his friends on Saturday.
He was returning when he had a disagreement with a bus conductor over the N50 fare and was stabbed to death.
P UNCH Metro learnt from a police source that angry residents almost lynched the conductor, who was identified as Samson Eletu.
He was reportedly saved by a community leader, who took him to the Aguda Police Division.
The source said, “The victim was returning home after a party when he entered the bus.
Eletu. Photo: Samson Folarin
“He gave the conductor N500, but the conductor told him he didn’t have N450 change, because the fare was N50.
“When they got to the bus stop, the man demanded his change and that started a fight.
“An Alfa in the bus intervened and separated them. But the conductor, who was still aggrieved, trailed the victim to his house.”
It was learnt that Eletu, while armed with a broken bottle, banged on the gate into the house.
“As the deceased opened the gate, Eletu stabbed him. Babatunde took to his heels, but the conductor chased him. Unfortunately, he fell down and the conductor stabbed him repeatedly,” he added.
It was learnt that Eletu was fleeing from the scene when he was nabbed by a suspicious resident who saw blood stains on his clothes.
The younger sister of the victim, Blessing Omoyeni, said his brother would not have died if he was rescued on time.
She said he spent over one hour in a pool of blood before he was rushed to the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Idi Araba.
She said, “Nobody was ready to assist him to the hospital. A man had to throw himself in front of a commercial bus and asked the passengers to disembark, before he could get help. “He was rushed to LUTH, but they were turned back at the gate by a doctor who pronounced him dead on arrival around 12am.
“People started beating the conductor and almost killed him before he was rescued and taken to the Aguda Police Division.”
It was learnt that the victim’s corpse was deposited at the Isolo General Hospital mortuary.
His girlfriend, Temiloluwa Ogundayo, said Babatunde had recently informed her to prepare for their engagement.
Ogundayo, who lived with Babatunde, said she was not aware that he had been killed until the early hours of Sunday.
“We have dated for over one year and he told me to meet my sister to ask for the requirement for our engagement. He said we would go there on Monday.
“On that Saturday morning before he went to work, we made love. He called me around 5pm to prepare food for him that he would soon be home. I had done everything and was waiting for him in the house till 11pm when I drifted off into sleep.
“Around 1am, he came in and slept beside me. He rubbed my head with his hand and I asked him if he had eaten his food, but he said I should not bother, that he was fine.
“I went back to sleep and it was around 6am that somebody called me and asked if I knew he was dead. I jumped up and looked around the bathroom and kitchen to know if he was there, but I couldn’t find him.”
The victim’s friend, Ogunyemi Olaribigbe, described him as quiet and gentle, adding that his death was a big blow to all who knew him.
Thirty-two-year-old Eletu said the victim attacked him first.
He said, “I am also a driver and I had parked my bus at about 7pm when I saw a co-driver who offered to take me home.
“It was along the way that he decided to pick passengers and there were eight of them in the bus.
“I collected money from seven of them, but he refused to pay and said he knew me on the street.
“It was at the bus stop that he broke a bottle and stabbed me in the forehead and cheek. I also got the same bottle, but unfortunately I stabbed him in the neck and he died.”
The Police Public Relations Officer, Joe Offor, when contacted promised to call back, but he had yet to do so as of the time of filing this report.

PoliticsMalpractices In Kogi, Bayelsa Elections Unfortunate, Says Buhari by ORACLE1975(op): 4:29am On Dec 09, 2015
President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday lamented that despite government’s efforts aimed at ensuring the conduct of credible elections, some malpractices were witnessed in the recent governorship elections in Kogi and Bayelsa states.
He called on Nigerians to support all necessary measures aimed at ensuring free, fair and credible elections in the country, including the use of card readers and permanent voter cards.

A statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, quoted the President as saying this while receiving the new members of the Inter-Party Advisory Council Executive Committee at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

“Referring to recent elections in Kogi and Bayelsa states, President Buhari said it was unfortunate that there were still reports of unhelpful electoral attitudes,” the statement read.

Buhari said more work needed to be done to perfect the conduct of elections in the country.

The President told members of IPAC that it was regrettable that the electorate in some parts of the country were deprived of the use of card readers and permanent voter cards during the last general elections despite the enthusiasm that followed their introduction to the Nigerian electoral system.
He also used the occasion of the visit of the IPAC leaders to thank them for their strong support for his candidacy in the build-up to the 2015 presidential election.

He congratulated the new Chairman of IPAC, Malam Bashir Yusuf, who is also the Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Movement.
In his remarks, Yusuf pledged the group’s support for Buhari’s fight against insurgency and corruption in the country.

He also reaffirmed IPAC’s belief in the unity, progress and indivisibility of Nigeria.
But in Yenagoa, hundreds of women and youths from the Yenagoa Local Government Area of Bayelsa State took to the streets on Tuesday, calling for the cancellation of the governorship poll in the area as a result of alleged irregularities during the election and the inconsistencies in the result announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission.

They alleged that the series of official complaints by genuine voters and the All Progressives Congress in the Yenagoa metropolis were ignored by officials of INEC.

They also lamented that the bias of the commission showed in the inconsistencies of the figures announced by the Collation Officer for the council.
The State Youth Leader of the APC, Edison Sorgwe, and a chieftain of the party, Alaowei Opukeme-Jonah, who spoke on behalf of the aggrieved voters, said the result announced by the INEC’s collation officers for the PDP, APC and other political parties were inconsistent with the number of rejected votes and cancelled votes.

The protesters submitted that the election in Yenagoa LGA should be cancelled like that of Southern Ijaw, saying it was also characterised by cases of ballot snatching, irregularities and widespread violence.

They said the election in the LGA recorded skirmishes resulting in more than eight members of the party sustaining injuries.

The protesters said they were also preparing a petition against identified security personnel and staff of INEC involved in corruption during the poll.
Meanwhile, INEC has said it has yet to decide on when it will conduct a supplementary election to determine the winner of the inconclusive Bayelsa State governorship poll.

The commission said a meeting of its officers and political parties would be called to decide when the election would hold.

INEC on Monday cancelled the election in the Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of the state, declaring the governorship poll inconclusive.
While results of elections in the remaining seven local government areas had been announced, the commission cancelled the exercise in the Southern Ijaw LGA due to widespread violence and irregularities.

Director of Voters Education and Publicity of INEC, Mr. Oluwole Osaze, told our correspondent in Abuja on Tuesday that the commission had yet to fix a date for the supplementary election.

Osaze said, “No, we have not decided on when the election in the affected local government will hold.
“We need to have a meeting in the commission and also meet with political parties in the state and other stakeholders before deciding on that.”
