When you say living on N3000 daily you should factor in transport, feeding and utilities like power and water.

Just making a case for feeding as daily living is reducing people to animals. It is only animals that their daily living is about feeding alone

That said, I don't know the market Reno went to but quote me anywhere, you can't get a tuber of yam for less than 1500 anywhere in this country today. A mudu of beans is over 1000 as well. Let's not go into rice. If you cook with charcoal, they sell a mudu of charcoal for N500. If it's gas, you're looking at 1300 to 1400. Pepper and tomatoes are cheap now. You should be able to get a considerable amount of both for 1000.

The above has already exceeded 3000 and we've not added onion, seasoning, and proteins. We've not added transport.

Gate that has gone bad long before we moved in,,even the father was alive,a part of the fence in compound fell,he and his sister tried to ginger their father to put the bill on us,we vehemently resisted, telling him to go and join hands with the landlord of the other compound...my brother till now,that fence is still lying down flat

If you're the only tenant there and like you said, the father when a life was very considerate in such things, then I'll say depending on the amount involved in the repair, you can discuss with the son who is the new landlord to offset a part of the amount on the repair.

But if there are other tenants then, it's better the tenants pull up funds to fix it.
The security of that premises is paramount and the safety of residents witin is most important.

Landlord.... If a room is not ok to your taste, you have every right to ask the landlord to repairs it or you move on to another one..
But since it's the gate, I think you people should contribute to repair the gate for security of you people.

The son is lying to you. Roof, gate, fence, plumbing, electrical wiring are the landlord's responsibility. Not the tenant.Your own responsibilities are daily maintenance, changing bulbs, fixing things you personally broke.The gate is a structural fixture. It's part of the property. The landlord (or his estate) is legally obligated to fix it.
Don't pay. If he insists, ask for a written notice stating the law he's quoting.Get a lawyer or local authority involved your local government tenancy office or a community leader.Team up with other tenants strength in numbers. If everyone refuses to pay, he can't evict all of you at once.

Now, let me educate everyone. I have a WhatsApp group called Landlording in Nigeria. If you are a landlord and interested, send me an email. If something is being used daily, it is the tenants ' responsibility to maintain what the landlord provided. Exterior things that are out of tenants' hands include roofing due to storms, but if you install solar and create leakage, you must fix it. If you block pipes leading to the soakaway due to CD wraps or Pampers, it is your responsibility, exterior or interior.

To prevent all this back and forth, landlords should always charge service fees with rent to cover expenses like this and since tenants must pay for these service fees, they will invariably be paying for all these damages. Some may want to pay, others may not want to pay...if they vacate, landlords will be stuck with the repairs. Listen and Learn.

But when the vast majority is complaining,then their genuine reasons of complaints should be looked into... Nigerians have always complained but it never been this loud.its a serious concern....i believe that sound policies shouldn't be taking forever to affect those on whose behalf it's be made...this our own since Buhari to this current regime only looks good on paper but in actual doings,we don't feel it.so please be patient with those who're complaining.

Please o my people, let me call myself a JJC here, I've lived in this apartment for a while now , just over 3 years to be precise, my landlord died recently, but while he was alive even though he was a bit strict, he was understanding and liberal in most of his expectations from us the tenants. Now the son in charge of the he house is something more or less a tyrant, I said so because our gate that has been broken for a while now, the young man said that it's we the tenants that should be responsible for the repairs, that the law of the land says so.... That that's what the law Court syipulates.... So I'm asking, is that true? There may be someone in the house who may know about this so well.
