How Dangote’s Truck Drivers Killed Over 200 Nigerians
admin 17 January 2013 NEWS

Accident just like its meaning is a mishap or an unforeseen and unplanned event or unfortunate circumstance, often with lack of intention or necessity but when it becomes rampant especially in a suspicious manner and to the extent that, lives are being lost in a reckless way depicting a voodoo approach, in a society where wealth and richness could be traced to spiritualism, then there’s an urgent need for authorities to nip it in the bud.

One of these is the consistent accidents from many of the drivers of the man reputed to be the richest in Africa, Alhaji Aliko Dangote. Aside being a multi billionaire business mogul of note whose track records transverse the Almighty FORBES, the man is also inching for the Guinness Books of Records by employing Phd holders as drivers.

photo
We take a look at some of these killings and found out that accidents recorded by Dangote trucks and it’s drivers have wasted more than 200 persons in just a year.

Even though, authorities in Lagos insisted that, lack of proper training of personnel and maintenance of these vehicles are the main cause of these accidents, some school of thought are of the opinion that there`s more to this than meets the eyes.

Enquirer outlines some of these accidents that have claimed lives by Dangote group.

Feb 2012
Less than 30 persons have been confirmed dead, with five said to be severe, in an accident in which a truck owned by Dangote Cement Company had a head-on collision with another truck. The accident occurred at Sango Otta in Ogun State.
Many of those crushed by the Dangote truck are reported to be on danger list in various hospitals in Lagos and Ogun States.

The Dangote truck, apart from the other truck, also crushed six vehicles, a tricycle and a motorcycle, “There was a head-on collision between the truck and a tipper lorry, which later involved other vehicles.”

Nineteen other persons were also injured in an auto accident on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

The accident, which occurred at about 12pm on Sunday, involved a black Toyota Hilux with number-plate AH 350GKW and white Mazda bus, with number-plate XZ377GGE.
It was said to be a head-on collision.

Last April, a coroner’s inquest indicted the company after a truck belonging to Dangote Sugar Refinery lost control and ran into vehicles at a police check-point, along the Lagos-Ibadan expressway, in 2010

July 2012
A truck belonging to Dangote Industries Limited allegedly crushed two men to death in a Toyota Camry car, on Wednesday. This is coming less than four months after a coroner’s verdict in Lagos indicted a truck driver with the same company for causing the death of over twenty motorists in 2010, along the Lagos-Ibadan expressway.

It will be recalled that on April 21, 2012, 38 students of the Federal Polytechnic, Ado-Ekiti in Ekiti State, also had an accident involving a truck allegedly belonging to Dangote Industries Limited. Four of the students involved in the accident reportedly died as a result of injuries sustained.

August 2012
The accident, which occurred after a truck belonging to Dangote Sugar Refinery Limited rammed into vehicles at the Ojodu bridge of the expressway, resulted in an inferno that led to the loss of over 40 lives.

An articulated truck belonging to Dangote Group, Wednesday, rammed into five vehicles at Isara, along Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, resulting in fatalities.

Four men were killed while 31 people, including three children, sustained serious injuries as the truck, with registration number XD 220 ZKS, crushed all five vehicles on impact.

Sept 2012
It’s yet another needless wastage of precious human lives as a truck belonging to Dangote Group just crushed a Sienna bus, trapping all the occupants. The accident happened in Lokoja, the Kogi State capital, in north-central Nigeria, over 40 people died.

Dec. 13, 2012
Dangote trucks have been involved in many accidents causing several deaths.

Jan. 16, 2013
Another fatal accident involving one of the Phd holder drivers of Dangote group occurred at Iyana Ilogbo, along Lagos Abeokuta express way leaving 2 people dead and many injured. We want authorities to help look into these reckless and untimely killings of innocent citizens. The gory picture is the latest accident recorded this morning.

Religion / Pastor Landed In Court For Raping 12-year-old Girl by osamedia(m): 7:52am On Jan 17, 2013
Alasco Shobowale, the 42-year-old pastor of a white garment church who allegedly raped a 12-year-old foster daughter of his neighbour (name withheld) was on Wednesday arraigned before an Ebute Meta Magistrate’s Court, Lagos.

photo

Shobowale, who speaks Igbo, the only language the girl understands, had allegedly lured the girl to the toilet of their residence and raped her.

According to the charge sheet, the incident happened at 10, Togodo Street, Temu, Epe, Lagos State at about 10pm on December 15, 2012.

The police said apart from having sexual intercourse with the girl, Shobowale also “sexually penetrated her anus.”

He was charged with two counts bordering on unlawful sexual intercourse and rape, which according to the charge sheet, is punishable under sections 137 and 259 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2011.

When the charges were read to him, Shobowale pleaded not guilty to both charges.

His lawyers, Kola Afolayan and Saka Bello, made an application for his bail urging the court to grant it on liberal terms.

Prosecutor, R. Odigie, who did not oppose the bail application by Shobowale’s lawyers, told the court that the victim and his foster father, Dayo Anjorin, were in court.

Anjorin, while fielding questions from the court, said Shobowale lured the girl from the passage they both share in the house to the toilet where he had carnal knowledge of her.

He said, “She is my wife’s niece and we brought her from Imo State two weeks before the incident happened and we were planning to enrol her in a school within our vicinity.

“The accused lured her from the common passage we share in front of our apartment to the toilet while my wife, I and our three children were inside.”

Magistrate Oyindamola Ogala urged Anjorin to speed up the process of enrolling the girl in school.

Before ruling on the application, Ogala said the matter would be referred to the family court “in the interest of justice.”

But one of Shobowle’s lawyers, Bello, opposed the transfer of the case to the family court.

“This court has jurisdiction to hear this matter. In the eyes of the law, he is presumed innocent and transferring this case without bail might make an innocent suffer unjustly,” Bello said.

But, Ogala allayed Bello’s fears that the accused would be denied bail, adding that she would rule on the bail application before the court.

She said, “I don’t see any problem with transferring this case to the family court. I’m sending this case to the family court in view of the age of the victim and in the interest of justice.

“You have made your bail application and I’m going to rule on it. For emphasis sake, the family court entertains matters that affect the right of a child.”

Ogala later granted Shobowale bail in the sum of N500, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

She said the sureties must furnish the court with evidence of tax payments to the state government and verifiable residential and office addresses while one of the sureties must be his blood relation.

She subsequently adjourned the case till March 15 for mention.

Crime / Arrested Osun Goat Dies In Custody-owma by osamedia(m): 7:45am On Jan 17, 2013
The five goats arrested by the Osun State Waste Management Agency (OWMA) in Osogbo last week were on Tuesday dragged before an Osogbo Magistrate Court along side their owners. Three owners of the goats including Mrs. Aduke Adetona, Mrs. Esther Ibikunle and Adedoyin Adetayo were docked, while the goats were not allowed into the court hall but kept in the premises of the court.

The court presided over by Mrs. A. O. Ajanaku discharged Mrs. Adetayo, who had already lost her goat in the custody of OWMA and ordered other accused persons to pay N2, 500 fine to the coffers of the state government. The court pardoned one of the owners, Mrs. Adedoyin Adetayo whose goat had died, but warned her to comply strictly with the provisions of the state environmental laws and the rules of OWMA.

The court ruled that the accused persons violated article 101, cap 11 of the laws of Osun State, which prohibited birds and other animals from straying into residential areas. The prosecutor, Mr. Femi Ogunbamiwo who is also the Director of Environmental Management and Sanitation in OWMA told the court that the accused persons committed an offence contrary to and punishable under the environmental laws of the state. Mr. Ogunbamiwo told the court that the accused persons committed the offence on January 5, 2013 by allowing animals under their control to stray into public domain in a manner that was injurious to the health of the public.

Counsel to the accused persons, Mr. Jimoh Daramola pleaded with the court to be lenient with his clients and temper justice with mercy, adding that the accused persons would henceforth obey the laws of the state. Article 101, cap 2 of the 2002 Laws of Osun State, which was passed by the state House of Assembly states that: “No bird or animal shall be allowed to stray to any road or public place or urinate or defecate in any public place in the state.”

The Special Adviser to the governor on Environment, Mr. Bola Ilori who spoke with reporters after the court session urged residents to keep their pets in a cage to prevent violation of the state environmental laws and guide against transmission of diseases from animal to man.

Romance / Please Separate Us, My Wife Fights Me With Shovels And Hammers” Man Tells Court by osamedia(m): 12:31am On Jan 17, 2013
A retiree, Emmanuel Oboh, 55, on Wednesday told a customary court in Lagos that he stopped sleeping with his wife and eating her food 12 years ago.

Mr. Oboh made the submission before an Ikorodu Customary Court during a hearing in a divorce suit he filed.

He said that he was fed up with the 21-year-old marriage to Comfort, 48, because she was troublesome.

The petitioner, who resides on Church Street, Agbede, Ikorodu, said that Comfort, a trader, regularly used dangerous weapons to threaten his life.

“My wife is very stubborn; she fights me with shovels and hammers. She once wounded me on the head with a very big stone.

“She fought with me last year to the extent that I reported the case to the police; she told me that she would eliminate me before the end of this year.

“Please separate us,’’ Mr. Oboh, a father of three children, prayed the court.

Responding, Comfort said that the marriage developed a problem when her husband began a relationship with another woman.

“When my husband was transferred to Epe, he took another woman and stopped coming home regularly; he no longer took responsibility for my children.

“All my violent acts were due to his bad behaviour toward me and my children,” she said.

She, however, prayed the court to save the marriage, saying that she still loves her husband.

The Court President, Emmanuel Daniel, adjourned the case to January 30 for possible reconciliation.

Business / 18 Human Heads Shipped From Rome Held Up At Chicago Airport by osamedia(m): 11:18pm On Jan 15, 2013
A shipment of 18 human heads, still covered in skin, was held at Chicago O’Hare International Airport by U.S. Customs and Border Patrol.

Customs officials halted the heads for investigation before handing them over to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office.
“We are involved because they can’t store them any longer,” Tony Brucci, chief of investigations at the medical examiner’s office told ABC News.
“We’ll be examining the heads in the autopsy room today, but there is no foul play suspected in the collection of the heads.”
The heads were en route to a research facility near Chicago, but there was a glitch in the paperwork.
“They were all properly preserved and tagged for the purpose of anatomical study,” Brucci said. “The paperwork just isn’t properly done.”
Researchers in Rome had been using the embalmed heads but shipped them to the United States for cremation at a facility near Chicago.
“The crematory has done nothing wrong. In fact, they were just here to hand all the paperwork over, and we’re satisfied everything is on the up-and-up,” Brucci told ABC News. “We are releasing them back to the crematory soon.”
The somewhat grisly discovery apparently wasn’t all that unusual. Doctors, medical facilities and research organizations often ship human body parts, said Brucci. This shipment raised flags because of the paperwork problem.
“This isn’t as strange as it sounds,” Brucci said. “People ship body parts to universities and hospitals all the time, we just don’t usually hear much about it.”
In 2010, a shipment of up to 60 human heads and parts of heads was seized at an airport in Arkansas.
Those heads were intended for medical training but were stopped in transit because of improper packaging and errors in the paperwork.

Health / UNIBEN Don Denies Discovering HIV/AIDS Cure by osamedia(m): 3:18pm On Jan 11, 2013
The controversy trailing the alleged discovery of a herbal medicine capable of curing the dreaded HIV/AIDS by Nigerian academic, Prof. Isaiah Ibeh, Dean, School of Basic Medical Science of University of Benin (UNIBEN), took a twist Thursday, following the recanting of the claim by the professor.
In a five-paragraph statement made available to journalists in Benin City, Prof. Ibeh expressed regrets over the publication of his acclaimed discovery of a drug that could cure
“The true position is that some observations of our Research are preliminary and the research is still ongoing.

“I am very sorry for the embarrassment this has caused the University of Benin and Professional Colleagues, realizing that there are procedures of reporting such Scientific result,” he said.

Meanwhile, the UNIBEN management has further distanced itself from Prof. Ibeh in an official pronouncement.

A press statement signed by the University’s Public Relations Officer, Barr. Harrison Osarenren, said as a reputable institution, well rooted in the promotion of research and development, it considers the publicized claim an embarrassment, bearing in mind that there were
laid down procedures for disseminating academic breakthroughs.

The University while appreciating Prof. Ibeh’s efforts, pointed out that his procedure did not follow laid down protocol said, adding, “for the avoidance of doubt, the said claim by Prof. Ibeh is a research exercise which is still in its infancy stage and therefore, on-going.”

The UNIBEN management maintained that until all the appropriate scientific processes have been duly followed in the research, it could not make any pronouncement on the research.

The National Agency for Food, Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC) on Thursday also debunked the claim, with its Director-General, Dr Paul Orhii, saying Ibeh’s claim was capable of misleading the public, especially those with the virus.

“There is no known treatment anywhere in the world now; no known cure; there are medicines that can contain HIV and AIDS but there is no known scientifically approved cure for HIV and AIDS.

“I want to categorically tell you, to avoid any doubt, make it abundantly clear to you that NAFDAC completely disassociates itself from the claims for a cure of HIV and AIDS made by Prof. Isaiah Ibeh of the University of Benin.

“The agency wishes to state that this herbal drug, which is claimed to have undergone a series of successful tests has never been presented to NAFDAC for evaluation of efficacy and safety.

“And as you know, we are the agency that has the mandate to make quality pronouncement on drugs that are to be used in Nigeria; we have never evaluated this drug·

Crime / How Wicked Mother Abandoned Baby Boy In Bush by osamedia(m): 8:49am On Dec 15, 2012
Wonders as the saying goes shall never cease. It is very amazing to hear cases of child abandonment especially when one considers the fact that children are precious gifts from God.

A baby boy who appears to be less than 24 hours old was found abandoned in a deserted path surrounded by shrubs in Ikorodu area of Lagos state recently.

The innocent child was welcomed to the world in this most wicked manner by an unknown mother or parents. The baby boy who was neatly wrapped was found in a bush at the early hours of Monday November 26, 2012, along Ikorodu -Itokin road, close to the popular Lucky Fibre bus-stop, Ikorodu.
According to residents, the baby was found at about 7am that fateful day by passers-by who were alerted by the cries of the baby.

Sympathisers quickly rushed to the scene and saw the baby crying. There was no written note or inscription left by the run-away mother. According to an eye witness, the good Samaritans were afraid to carry the innocent crying baby but on the orders of the chairman of the Community Development Authority, CDA, the innocent baby was immediately taken to the nearest police station.

Saturday Vanguard learnt that the child was immediately taken to Shagamu road Police Division, Ikorodu and then to an orphanage. The D.P.O Shagamu Road Police Division, SP Benard Ediagboya, told Saturday Vanguard and anyone who crave any information about the abandoned baby should call the Lagos State Police Public Relations officer (PPRO), adding that investigation had begun on the matter.

Family / Landlord Beats Female Tenant For Bedwetting by osamedia(m): 3:38pm On Nov 30, 2012
A landord has been arrested after bashing his female tenant accusing her of bed bedwetting. The alleged incident which has since become the talk of the suburb occurred on the 17th of November.

It is said that on the dramatic day, Luphahla was going about his errands when he saw a child of the tenant playing outside. The man is alleged to have slapped the three-year-old child for "acting" like her mother. The child ran into her mother's room wailing. This is said to have prompted the woman Ntombizodwa Ncube to demand answers as to the reasons behind the thrashing of her child.

Luphahla would have none of it and told the woman off. She was not going to be pushed away easily and continued pestering the man. Purportedly infuriated by this, Luphahla who was standing outside the woman's room forcibly went in. After a peep around the room, Luphahla spotted watery liquid on the woman's bed.
http://rulesofwealth.osamediasolutions.com/?p=909

He got closer to get a sniff and to his shock it was urine. The man went on to accuse Ncube of bedwetting. She compounded the problem by failing to defend herself.

As such, Luphahla is alleged to have dragged her outside the room labelling her a bed wetter. He then kicked her until she fell. By then a crowd made up of mostly kids had already gathered to see the bed wetter.

Taking advantage of the situation, the man went on to savagely kick the woman on the left breast. As the assault raged on, Luphahla is reported to have hit Ncube twice on the leg with a stone.

The woman was later rescued by a neighbour. Luphahla was arrested and remanded in custody to 4 December after failing to pay $100 bail which he had been granted by Western Commonage magistrate, Mr Richard Ramaboea.

Politics / Terrorism: Army To Kick Civilians Out Of Barracks by osamedia(m): 7:34am On Nov 30, 2012
THE military has commenced the mass eviction of civilians from barracks across the country, Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Azubuike Ihejirika, said on Thursday.

The eviction of non-soldiers from barracks is coming on the heels of two successful attacks by suspected terrorists in the first two days of this week.

Two car bombers had on Sunday struck at the St. Andrew Military Protestant Church inside the prestigious Armed Forces Command and Staff College, in Jaji, near Kaduna. The college houses the officers and men of the Infantry Centre and School as well as the Nigerian Army Peace Keeping Centre .

Also on Monday, gunmen, numbering 40, launched an attack on the office of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad in Abuja, where suspects were being held. Two policemen and one of the gunmen were killed in the incident.

Ihejirika said at the closing of the Chief of Army Staff Annual Conference in Asaba, Delta State, that he had already issued a directive to commanders in charge of military formations to take immediate action in ridding the military formations of illegal occupants.

The COAS also warned that the leadership of the Army would ensure that reported lapses were treated decisively.

He said, “That one (purging the barracks of illegal occupants) is obvious. I have already informed the commanders and they know. The commanders would not wait for the Chief of Army Staff before taking action. Rather, from next week, I want to see action in respect of illegal squatters and similar things.”

The Commander in charge of Army Engineering, Maj. Gen. Olaniyi, who took the last presentation at the conference, had called attention to the fact that barracks being rehabilitated were accommodating a large number of civilians in places like the Ikeja Cantonment and Asaba.

Olaniyi, who said that the Ojo Cantonment had become haven for criminals, warned that unless decisive steps were taken, even foreigners would be more than soldiers in some rehabilitated barracks.

He had said that the number of civilians living in the cantonment was even more than that of soldiers.

Ihejirika insisted that the bombing at the Armed Forces Command and Staff College was avoidable, stressing that absence a perimeter fence did not offer any commander an excuse to allow such an incident to happen.

He said that about 80 of the barracks in the country had not been fenced and urged the commanders to put in their best in the area of intelligence gathering and security maintenance.

Meanwhile, Ihejirika has promised Nigerians “a more comprehensive action by the military and all the security agencies” in 2013.

He said that the military would be decisive in 2013, stressing that it was part of the decision of the conference that unit commanders must pay more attention to effective liaison, supervision and monitoring of personnel under them.

The COAS said, “Nigerians should expect more comprehensive action by the military and all the security agencies. Part of the decisions arrived at is that unit commanders should liaise more and they should supervise and monitor their personnel more closely than they had done in the past. So 2013 would be decisive.”

He said that the Nigerian Army had been collaborating with other security agencies, including the Nigerian Police, the Nigerian Intelligence Agency and foreign bodies to enhance intelligence gathering and dissemination.

He said the conference also agreed on the need for “national intelligence fusion” to enhance intelligence gathering.

He said, “The conference also emphasised the need for national intelligence fusion. What it means is that all the various measures are going to be fast tracked to ensure that intelligence is further enhanced.

“And you should know that it is a running battle because the people you are fighting are people within the country. So they know what measures you are even taking. They know that. So that is why I also drew the attention of commanders to devise new tactics in dealing with the problem.

“Certain groups are going to be set up too to monitor the commanders in the field and, no mistake about it, command responsibility is one area we will emphasise more next year.”

Ihejirika also ordered the painting of all operational vehicles of the Nigerian Army donated by state governments, corporate bodies, in Army colour.

He also said that the different uniforms of the Army should be used only for authorised specified activities.

Also on Thursday, the Agence France Presse reported that Boko Haram leader, Abubakar Shekau, had expressed solidarity with global jihadists, saying the United States and Britain “should witness that we are with our mujahedeen brothers.”

Shekau, in the 39-minute video posted on jihadists forum, was quoted to have said in Arabic that,”The world should witness, and America, Britain, Nigeria and other crusaders, meaning America and Britain, should witness, and the Jews of Israel who are killing the Muslims in Palestine should witness… that we are with our mujahedeen brothers in the cause of Allah everywhere.”

When on January 14, 2012, Biyi and Bose Bolaji had their first baby, family and friends rejoiced with them. However, just 10 months after their bundle of joy arrived, he met his death after being hit by a reckless driver in Abuja.

Biyi told our correspondent that his wife, who was carrying his late son, Adeyemi, was about to get a cab along Airport Road and were standing by the roadside when they were run over by the car.

He said, “That Thursday, my wife and baby were on Airport Road attempting to get a cab to my friend’s house. Suddenly, a Toyota Corolla ran into them as well as another man who was standing beside them. The driver also hit a nearby pole before finally stopping.

“Bystanders and sympathisers responded immediately to rescue them. The driver just came down from his car and a few minutes later, fled on foot. He did not even bother to assist them in getting to the hospital.”

Biyi said his wife sustained a fracture of her leg and bruises all over her body and was immediately rushed to Garki Hospital while the baby was taken to National Hospital.

PUNCH Metro learnt that the driver abandoned his vehicle and since then had not made effort to contact the victims.

“The consultant neurosurgeon told me on Friday that my baby was brain dead and was on life support at the Intensive Care Unit. We continued to pray and hoped that his condition would improve. On Monday, after my wife had been discharged, I took her to dress her wounds when I received a call from the doctor that the baby had died,” he said.

Biyi told our correspondent that upon investigation, it was discovered that the vehicle’s number plate, AL 585 DGE EDO, was owned by one Alaibe Henry, a Nigerian Immigration officer.

He said he immediately reported the matter to Lugbe Police Division but added that it could not be ascertained if it was the owner of the vehicle that drove the car when the incident occurred.

The second victim, Emmanuel Amairo, told our correspondent that he could not remember all that happened because it happened so fast.

He said, “Everything happened so fast. I was standing at Voice of Nigeria Junction along Airport Road when a Toyota car just ran into me and another woman (Bose) and her baby. The vehicle hit me in the legs and I hit my forehead on the ground. We were all rushed to the National Hospital but the hospital rejected us.

“The lady (Bose) and I were taken to Garki Hospital. I remained in the hospital for five days before being discharged. Even now I’m still in pain.”

Biyi said he was shocked that 12 days after, the driver had not deemed it fit to trace the victims.

“As a driver myself, if I run over even a goat, I stop and ask for the owner to apologise and if necessary, for restitution. I see no reason why they (victims) should have been left lying on the ground without medical aid sought for them”, he said.

Biyi said he had reported the matter to the immigration authorities but nothing had been done.

The Public Relations Officer, NIS, Mr. Joachim Olumba, said he wasn’t aware of the incident. He however said if the incident was true, then it was for the police to investigate.

“The victims ought to report to the police who are in charge of such investigations. It’s unlike an officer to act in such manner but if the police come to us for information, we will cooperate fully,” he said.

However, the Police Public Relations Officer, FCT Command, Doris England, confirmed the incident to our correspondent on the telephone.

England however said the police had yet to get the identity of the driver.

“The vehicle has been recovered by the police and investigations are ongoing. We will use the registration number to get the identity and address of the driver,” she said.

Politics / Boko Haram: JTF Places Reward Up To N290m On Shekau’s Head by osamedia(m): 2:26pm On Nov 24, 2012
The Joint Task Force (JTF) Operation Restore Order in Borno State promised to give a reward of up to N290 million for anybody who can give information that will lead to the arrest of Imam Abubakar Shekau, the leader of Boko Haram, and 18 others.

Four of the men, described as “Shurra Committee,” have a reward of N25 million each for information leading to their arrest. They are: Habibu Yusuf (aka Asalafi); Khalid Albarnawai; Momodu Bama; and Mohammed Zangina.

The 14 other men, described as “Boko Haram Commanders,” have a bounty of N10m each placed on their heads.

A statement signed by Lieutenant Colonel Sagir, the spokesman of the special task force in Borno State said Shekau and his allies are wanted in connection with terrorist activities particularly in the North East Zone of the country.

“They are wanted in connection with activities that led to the killings, bombings and assassination of some civilians, religious leaders, traditional rulers, businessmen, politicians, civil servants and security personnel amongst others. They are also wanted for arson and destruction of properties worth of millions of naira,” the statement said.

It was added that anyone with information that will lead to the arrest of any of the suspects will have the stipulated reward.

“Anybody with relevant information should contact the following GSM numbers 08064174066, 07085464012, 08154429345,” the statement said. Informants’ identities will be highly protected.

There has lately been a deep division in the government of President Goodluck Jonathan about Boko Haram. While his spokesman, Reuben Abati, had said consistently that the government was using “back room channels” to negotiate with the militants, President Jonathan himself said in his Media Chat last week that no negotiations of any sort are going on.

A recent statement by the JTF indicates a new government hard line, perhaps stemming from efforts to generate negotiations which may see renewed militant attacks on soft targets in the country. Recently, the group asked the leader of the Congress for Political Change, General Muhammadu Buhari, to mediate talks with the government, but Buhari turned down the offer.

The JTF’s strategy of giving monetary reward to informants adds a new perspective to the imbroglio between the federal government of Nigeria and the Boko Haram insurgents.

Observers say the decision has also foreclose the much taunted dialogue option which many people believe remains the most viable platform that will end the crisis.

The crisis has so far claimed the lives of thousands of people and crippled the economic fortunes of most of the northeastern states.

Shekau took over the mantle of leadership of the sect from Mallam Mohammed Yusuf, the leader of the group who was allegedly killed by the police at the height of the crisis in 2009.

Politics / Israel Hits Hamas Government Buildings by osamedia(m): 3:15pm On Nov 17, 2012
Israeli aircraft bombed Hamas headquarters before dawn on Saturday, including the office of Gaza Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh, as conflict in the region entered its fourth day.

Israeli planes shattered Haniyeh's office building - where he had met with Egyptian Prime Minister Hisham Qandil the day before - and struck the interior ministry.

Loud explosions regularly rocked the densely populated Palestinian territory, sending plumes of smoke billowing into the sky. The occasional hiss of outgoing rocket fire showed Islamist militants were pursuing their defiance of the assault.

Crime / Newborn Baby Found Dead In Students’ Hostel Soak-away by osamedia(m): 2:38pm On Nov 17, 2012
Occupants of a private school hostel located near the main gate of a tertiary institution in Imo State known for its relocation crisis woke up on Wednesday morning to behold the sight of a new born tucked inside a soak-away in the hostel.

Eye witnesses told LEADERSHIP WEEKEND that some occupants of the hostel heard the cry of the baby on that fateful day but could not decipher where the sound was coming from.

Their curiosity, according to the witness, spurred some of them to organise a search party. “Fortunately, as we further gathered, the cry of the baby was traced to the soak-away inside the hostel,” a student said.

The search party, comprising mainly male students, allegedly found the baby with a rope tied to a computer. But unfortunately, the baby died before it was brought out of the soak-away. According to a witness, the baby was suspected to be a day-old as its placenta was found dangling from his neck.

The rescue team, it was learnt, subsequently searched all the rooms occupied by female students but could not trace the baby’s mother. The matter was reported to the police in Owerri, who have intensified investigation.

Business / Culprits Steal Dead Baby From Grave, And Shave Corpse Hair For Money Rituals by osamedia(m): 4:41pm On Nov 16, 2012
Villagers were left dumbfounded when they woke up in the morning, only to realise that their dead baby whom they had buried the previous day had been exhumed from the grave.

They were further shocked upon noticing that the grave was empty and the corpse was no where to be found. However, the lifeless body was later found after a prominent farmer in the area confessed to have ‘stolen’ the corpse.

He reportedly acknowledged to be the culprit behind the spine-chilling incident. The man is said to have revealed that he wanted to use the dead baby’s body for ritual purposes in a bid to strengthen his farming business.

The incident comes barely a couple of days after another corpse mysteriously got its hair shaved just before burial. Two elderly women are said to have come out of the closet in court where they confessed to have shaved the corpse’s hair. They allegedly revealed that they sought to sell the dead man’s hair to traditional healers.

The alleged man who exhumed the grave of a baby who had just been buried said he wanted to use the corpse to enhance his farming business.

When the matter was brought before the chief villagers court, by the deceased family members with the hair exhibit as evidence, Chief Matsiwo fined the two women for the crime they committed.

He also warned villagers in the area against engaging in ‘get rich quick’ schemes as that is the major way of initiating one into the witchcraft world.

Crime / Suspected Facebook Fraudster Arraigned Over N140,000 Fraud by osamedia(m): 4:34pm On Nov 16, 2012
A 28-year old suspected Facebook fraudster, Benjamin Asuahor, of Eleko town in Lagos State was on Thursday arraigned before an Abuja Magistrates’ Court, Life Camp for alleged cheating.

The accused, who appeared before Chief Magistrate Rahmatu Gulma, was also charged with criminal breach of trust and criminal intimidation, the News Agency of Nigeria reports.

The Police prosecutor, Cpl. John Ijagbemi, told the court that one Amaka Okoye of No. 2, Gafia Street, Nasarawa State reported the accused at the FCT Police Command headquarters, Abuja.

Ijagbemi said that on June 4, the accused, who was a Facebook contact, proposed to sell ladies wear and hand bags to Okoye at N140,000.

He said on June 20, Okoye paid the said money into a UBA account, in favour of one Obiowu Felix, but the accused refused to supply the items.

The prosecutor told the court that efforts to get the money back proved abortive, adding that in the process, the accused threaten to kill Okoye if she insisted on collecting her money back.

He said police investigation had discovered that the accused was only a scammer that neither had a job nor a shop.

Ijagbemi said the accused was charged with criminal breach of trust, cheating and criminal intimidation, which is contrary to the provisions of sections 312, 322 and 397 of the Penal Code. The accused, however, pleaded ‘not guilty.’

The prosecutor, however, urged the court for an adjournment and urged the court to remand the accused in prison custody till the next adjourned date.

He argued that the accused had no fixed address within the jurisdiction of the court and if granted bail on any grounds, he was liable to jump bail.

Chief Magistrate Gulma remanded the accused in prison custody and adjourned the case till November 21 for hearing.

Religion / Demoted Christian Wins Anti-gay Marriage Facebook Post Ruling by osamedia(m): 4:22pm On Nov 16, 2012
UK – A Christian man who was demoted in his job after posting his opposition to gay marriage on Facebook has won a breach of contract action against his employers.

Adrian Smith, 55, lost his managerial position and received a 40% cut in salary after he said gay weddings in Church were “an equality too far”.

Smith, from Bolton, also claimed the trust had breached his human rights by demoting him. The comments were posted outside of work hours and not visible to the general public, but his employers claimed Smith broke its code of conduct by expressing religious or political views which might upset co-workers.

Smith posted the comment next to a February 2011 BBC story with the headline: “Gay church ‘marriage’ set to get the go-ahead”.

Father-of-two Smith said he was “pleased” to have won his legal bid, but added that “this sad case should never have got this far”.

He said in a statement: “Something has poisoned the atmosphere in Britain, where an honest man like me can be punished for making perfectly polite remarks about the importance of marriage.

“I have won today. But what will tomorrow bring? I am fearful that, if marriage is redefined, there will be more cases like mine – and if the law of marriage changes people like me may not win in court.

“Does the Prime Minister want to create a society where people like me, people who believe in traditional marriage, are treated as outcasts? That may not be his intention, but, as my treatment shows, that’s what will happen.”

Because of legal technicalities, Smith’s payout was limited to £100 (N25,066).

At London’s High Court, Judge Justice Briggs said: “Mr Smith was taken to task for doing nothing wrong, suspended and subjected to a disciplinary procedure which wrongly found him guilty of gross misconduct, and then demoted to a non-managerial post with an eventual 40% reduction in salary. The breach of contract which the Trust thereby committed was serious and repudiatory.

“A conclusion that his damages are limited to less than £100 (N25,066) leaves the uncomfortable feeling that justice has not been done to him in the circumstances.”

Smith’s emloyer said his company fully accepts the court’s decision, adding: “At the time we believed we were taking the appropriate action following discussions with our employment solicitors and taking into account [Smith's] previous disciplinary record.”
