Nairaland GeneralOyetola Lifts Curfew In Osun by Osuninsight(op): 7:15am On Nov 12, 2020
The Governor of the State of Osun, Mr Adegboyega Oyetola, has lifted the curfew that followed the disruption of peace in the State.

It will be recalled that the government had earlier relaxed the 24-hour indefinite curfew to run from 8:00pm till 6:00am daily, following observation of citizens' compliance and cooperation with the government's efforts to restore peace and normalcy to the State.

In a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information and Civic Orientation, Mrs Funke Egbemode, citizens can now go about their businesses and other transactions beyond 8:00pm without any hindrance or restrictions with effect from Wednesday November 11.

She stated: "The government has once again observed the level of compliance to all directives aimed at restoring tranquility to our dear State, and hereby appreciates the citizens for their patience and understanding. The government also appreciates security agencies for their efforts in maintaining law and order in the State.

"With effect from Wednesday November 11, residents of the State are free to go about their businesses without any hindrance or restrictions, while security agencies continue to discharge their duties to forestall breakdown of law and order.

"The government urges every citizen to be wary of actions that can upset the peace and harmony that the State is reputed for, and not hesitate to provide useful information to security agencies in case of suspicion of violence in any of our communities.

"The government is also calling on parents and guardians to continue to caution their children and wards not to allow themselves to be used by unscrupulous elements to jeopardize the peace of the State", Egbemode stated.

Nairaland General2021 Budget: Bamidele Salam Protests Against Lopsidedness Of 11 Billion Road Pro by Osuninsight(op): 7:02am On Nov 12, 2020
The House of Representatives member representing Ede-North/Ede-South/Egbedore/Ejigbo Federal Constituency, Hon. Bamidele Salam has called for the even distribution of the controversial 11 billion road projects enlisted in the 2021 budget proposal of Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA) to all the six geopolitical zones.

Speaking earlier after the budget defence session, Hon. Bamidele Salam (PDP-Osun) observed that “there was an attempt to rush the passage of the budget and prevent those of us who had observations from doing so.

In a statement released by his office, the lawmaker added, “The National Assembly should be tired of being called a rubber stamp Assembly. We are not; we are not supposed to be. If a ministry, department or agency brings in a document, we should subject that document to thorough scrutiny.

"We should scrutinise it with the eye of the law, and equity, fairness and justice. That is what the parliament should do but that is what some people are trying to resist, from what happened at this meeting. I think we should go back to look at this document and ask ourselves honestly: does this budget proposal by FERMA reflect the spirit of the Nigerian Constitution and the budget which is supposed to bring even development to all parts of the country?

“To me, the answer is no. And if the answer is no, then we should go back to the drawing board. It is still a proposal; it is a bill before the National Assembly, which is subject to being tinkered with. I am expecting that the committee, under the chairmanship of Hon Bamisile, will reconvene and address the concerns that I expressed.”

“The observation that I made was very simple: first is the fact that in the 2021 budget proposal analysis that I have before me, out of the 420 projects proposed, the South-West zone which I am from has the least allocation which is 48, and least allocation which is about N3 billion. That is just a part of it.

“The larger part of it is that the constituency that I represent, Ede-North/Ede-South/Egbedore/Ejigbo Federal Constituency, does not have a single allocation of a project out of the 420 projects. Even the whole of the state where I come from, Osun State, which is represented by nine members in the House, does not have a single projected allocated to it, out of a budget of N38.2bn proposed by FERMA", Hon. Salam posited.

Nairaland GeneralAlleged Exam Malpractices: Court To Rule On Adeleke And Three Others. by Osuninsight(op): 9:03pm On Nov 10, 2020
A Federal High Court in Abuja has scheduled ruling for January 26, 2021 in the no-case submissions made by the defendants in a case of alleged examination malpractices involving a relative of former governorship candidate in Osun State, Senator Ademola Adeleke, Sikiru Adeleke and three others.

Other defendants are: Alhaji Aregbesola Mufutau (the Principal of Ojo-Aro Community Grammar School, Ojo-Aro, Osun State), Gbadamosi Thomas Ojo (the school’s Registrar) and Dare Samuel Olutope (a teacher in the school).

Justice Inyang Ekwo chose the date on Tuesday after parties adopted their written addresses in relation to the defendants’ no-case objection.

Justice Ekwo said he chose a fairly long adjourned date in view of the crowded court’s docket but told parties they would be informed should the ruling be ready before then.

The defence team led by Nathaniel Oke (SAN), while adopting the defendants’ addresses, argued that the prosecution failed, through its five witnesses, to establish a prima facie case against the defendants to warrant their being called upon to enter defence.

The defendants prayed the court to uphold their no-case submissions, dismiss the charge and acquit them.

Lawyer to the prosecution, Simon Lough, argued otherwise.

He insisted the prosecution has sufficiently made out a case against the defendants to require them to be ordered to enter their defence.

Lough prayed the court to reject the defendants’ no-case submissions and order them to defend themselves against the offences alleged.

Senator Adeleke, who contested the last Osun State governorship election in 2018 as a candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), was initially charged with the current four defendants, and were first arraigned in late 2018.

In the initial four-count charge, Senator Adeleke and Sikiru were accused of “fraudulently, through personation,” registered as students of Ojo-Aro Community Grammar School, Ojo-Aro, Osun State to enable them sit for the National Examinations Council (NECO) examination of June/July 2017.

The other three defendants were accused of aiding the commission of the alleged offence, in the charge filed in the name of the Inspector General of Police (IGP).

However, the prosecution amended the charge in December 2018 and raised the counts to seven, following which the defendants were re-arraigned on the amended charge on December 16, 2018.

On May 28, 2020 the prosecution applied to discontinue against Senator Adeleke, citing his prolonged absence from the country.

The Senator had reportedly travelled outside the country having earlier been granted leave by the court to travel abroad on health grounds.

In a ruling on May 29, 2020, Justice Ekwo granted the prosecution’s application and proceeded to discharge and acquit the politician, leaving the remaining four as defendants in the case.

According to a statement released by the Senior Special Assistant on media to the President,  Garba Shehu, the President describes the election as a reminder that democracy is the best form of government because it offers the people the opportunity to choose their leader and change government in a peaceful manner.

"Your election is a significant reminder that democracy is the best form of government because it offers the people the opportunity to change their government by peaceful means."

He noted that "the main fascination of democracy is the freedom of choice and the supremacy of the will of the people."

The President added that "respect for the will of the people is the very reason why democracy remains the best form of government, despite its limitations from one polity to another, and from one society to another."

"I am thrilled by the fact that you are an experienced politician who had served as Congressman for 40 years and a Vice President for eight years. This is a remarkable track record that gives us hope that you will add value to the presidency and world affairs."

President Buhari also assured the newly elected President of the continued collaborations of the two countries, "with your election, we look forward to greater cooperation between Nigeria and the United States, especially at economic, diplomatic and political levels, including the war against terrorism."

The Nigerian leader also called on Mr. Biden to introduce greater engagement with Africa on the basis of reciprocal respects and shared interests.
