Health / Global Coronavirus Cases Pass 5 Million As Situation Worsens In Brazil, Russia, by Osunwole: 5:42am On May 21, 2020
The are now more than 5 million cases of coronavirus around the world, with a record 106,000 new cases recorded in the last 24 hours, the World Health Organization says.

Key points:

-Most of the new cases came from Latin America
-Cases in Brazil are now rising at a daily pace -second only to the US
-1 million new cases are now being reported every two weeks

WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said two-thirds of the new cases came from just four countries — the US, Russia, Brazil and India.

"We still have a long way to go in this pandemic," Dr Tedros said.

"We are very concerned about rising cases in low and middle-income countries."

Latin America overtook the US and Europe in the past week to report the largest portion of new daily cases globally.

It represents a new phase in the spread of the virus, which initially peaked in China in February before large-scale outbreaks in Europe and the United States.

Latin America accounted for around a third of the 91,000 cases reported earlier this week. Europe and the United States each accounted for just over 20 per cent.

A large number of those new cases came from Brazil, which recently surpassed Germany, France and the United Kingdom to become the third-largest outbreak in the world, behind the United States and Russia.

Cases in Brazil are now rising at a daily pace second only to the US.

Foreign Affairs / Trump: Chinese Propaganda Attack On US ‘disgrace’ by Osunwole: 5:26am On May 21, 2020
US President Donald Trump said Wednesday that a Chinese disinformation and propaganda attack on his country and Europe is a disgrace.

“[China’s Foreign Ministry] Spokesman [Zhao Lijian] speaks stupidly on behalf of China, trying desperately to deflect the pain and carnage that their country spread throughout the world. Its disinformation and propaganda attack on the United States and Europe is a disgrace,” Trump said on Twitter.

“China is on a massive disinformation campaign because they are desperate to have Sleepy Joe Biden win the presidential race so they can continue to rip-off the United States, as they have done for decades, until I came along!,” he added.

Earlier, Lijian said on Twitter that the “US non-stop disinformation may confuse and mislead some for a while.”

Regarding Trump’s letter to WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, he said the US should focus on beating the coronavirus rather than “give an ultimatum to the organization that leads [the] global epidemic response.”

In April, Trump said the WHO was China-centric and temporarily cut US funding with a review pending.

He criticized its late warnings against the coronavirus pandemic, which has infected nearly 5 million people worldwide and killed more than 328,000.

On Monday, Trump gave the WHO 30 days to "commit to major substantive improvements" or the US would permanently freeze funding for the body and reconsider its membership.

The Former Registrar was directed to hand over all Government properties in his custody to the Acting Registrar of the Council.

Also, in another letter with reference NO: FME/S/1419/C.3/T/98, dated 11th May, 2020, and signed by the Permanent Secretary, Arc. Sonny Echono, it’s disclosed that President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the dismissal from service of Four Management Staff for various offences.

The letter stated that “after due consideration of the Financial report of the Review Committee, Mr. President has approved the recommendations as follows”.

“Mr. Bamidele Amos Olure, Acting Director (Finance and Accounts), dismissal from the service with effect from the date of his suspension from office having been found guilty of financial impropriety and not qualified to Head the Finance and Accounts Department”.

The letter also stated that Dr. Shina Adetona was dismissed from service with effect from the date he was suspended from office for acts tantamount to fraudulent practices, sabotage and suppression of official records pursuant to PSR 030402 (b & t). He is also to be prosecuted in line with section 58 (5) (a & b) of the Public Procurement Act (PPA) (2007) for flagrant violation of PPA 2007 as Head of Procurement and misleading Management on Procurement.

Also, Mr. Tayo Odukoya was dismissed from service for acts of serious misconduct which violates PSR 030301 and PSR 030402 (q) (t) (w). He is to be prosecuted in line with section 58 (5) (a) and (b) of the Public Procurement Act (2007) for flagrant violation of the Act. The letter directed the Management of NECO to Commence the process of recovering ill-gotten benefits/gains from Mr. Odukoya who acted as Director of a company (M/S I-web Solutions) while in service of Government.

Barrister Babatunde Aina was dismissed from service for falsification of records and dishonesty in the sale of NECO Guest House, which violates section 2609 (a) of the Financial Regulations (FR) and PPA (2007) part X section 55 (2) – (4) and section 56 which are tantamount to serious misconduct pursuant to PSR 030301 (g), PSR 030402 (a) and PSR 030402 (m). Politics / ‘it’s An Insult To Be Struggling To Enter Govt House With Cows On The Road by Osunwole: 8:00pm On May 20, 2020
Ebonyi State Governor, David Umahi, has banned movement of cattle in the state capital, Abakaliki and its environs with immediate effect.

Umahi, who announced this during a statewide broadcast on Wednesday, said he had directed the state Attorney- General facilitate legal process for auctioning of cows seen within the areas.

He said: “I have told relevant security agencies in the state that I will no longer tolerate the presence of cows within the centenary city and its environs such as the international market and new shopping mall among others.

“It is an insult for me to be struggling to enter the Government House with cows on the road.”

The governor also said the state government would not allow movement of the Quranic education pupils (Almajiris) to the state.

“We will not allow Almajiris in Ebonyi and we have to tell ourselves the truth as a people,” he said.

Politics / Nothing Like Niger-delta Or South-south – Nnamdi Kanu by Osunwole: 7:47pm On May 20, 2020
The Leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has faulted the establishment of Niger-Delta and South-South in Nigeria.

In a statement he sent to Vanguard, through Emma Powerful, the group’s publicity secretary, Kanu argued that Abia, Cross River, Akwa Ibom are the same people.

He said there is nothing like Niger-Delta or South-South, noting that only a fool would call him or herself a Niger-Deltan or South-South person.

Read the full statement below:

Abia, Cross River, Akwa Ibom are the same people

“I want to educate the enemies of Biafra, traitors within and agents of the supporter of APC Caliphate that there is NOTHING like Niger-Delta or South South. I maintain that only a fool and a roundly unintelligent one at that can ever call him or herself a Niger-Deltan or South South person. The British and their illiterate Fulani house niggers thought they could divide us, not knowing that what binds all the nations of Biafra is stronger than the hate they planted amongst us.

“The building blocks of a NATION is commonality of culture as universally defined and accepted and they don’t come lesser than the reverred EKPE & OKONKO fraternities which bind Bende province in Abia, Efik and Ibiobio together as one family. Go through the text on the first picture, you will see that Abiriba ranks alongside other clans in Biafra all the way to Bakassi peninsular as having the same EKPE culture.

“Abiriba is the umbilical cord that ties Igbos to their bretheren in Ejeagham, Efik, Ibibio, Annang, Bakassi and all the way to parts of Ambazonia. Abiriba people of Bende in Abia State is by far the richest clan in Africa per capita and are the only Igbo group that use ‘ung or ong’ similar to that in Effi’ong or Ob’ong in their lexicon. Check out the writing on the cultural float in the second picture below.

“Without prejudice to my fellow Biafrans in Bini that I love dearly, I want to ask those that carved out South South/Niger-Delta, what are the tangible cultural ties or affinity between the people of Cross River and Bini that led to put them together in a geopolitical unit? Because Abia State has EKPE and OKONKO cults which are bonded to cultures in Cross River & Akwa Ibom states.

“My question therefore is, on what basis did Fulani supporter of APC determine who to include in their South South region when clearly the closest relatives to Cross River and Akwa Ibom is Abia?

However Wikipedia.org has it that; “The Niger Delta is the delta of the Niger River sitting directly on the Gulf of Guinea on the Atlantic Ocean in Nigeria. It is typically considered to be located within nine coastal southern Nigerian states, which include: all six states from the South South geopolitical zone, one state (Ondo) from South West geopolitical zone and two states (Abia and Imo) from South East geopolitical zone. Of all the states that the region covers, only Cross River is not an oil-producing state.

“The Niger Delta is a very densely populated region sometimes called the Oil Rivers because it was once a major producer of palm oil. The area was the British Oil Rivers Protectorate from 1885 until 1893, when it was expanded and became the Niger Coast Protectorate. The delta is a petroleum-rich region and has been the center of international controversy over pollution.”

Health / COVID-19: Nigerians Should Be Prepared For The Worst – Health Minister by Osunwole: 7:51pm On May 19, 2020
The minister of health, Osagie Ehanire has advised Nigerians to be prepared for a worst-case scenario as the country learns more about the COVID-19 pandemic. Mr Ehanire said this at the national briefing of the Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19 on Tuesday evening.
He said: “It is of great importance that we members of the health sector and citizens to use this period to dedicate our efforts to strive for the best outcomes, but also be prepared and prepare for the worst as we learn more about coronavirus every day.”

Accordingly, Mr Ehanire announced the readiness of the health team to adjust its strategy as at when due.

“We must be ready to adjust our strategy. These are based on knowledge and evidence.”
The minister also noted that a team of experts have been deployed to Calabar, Cross River State capital to review and evaluate the present status and needs of the state’s response team on COVID-19. Recall that only Kogi and Cross River States are yet to record at least a single case of the infection.

According to him, the team members include experts from the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NAPHCDA), the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), the department of Hospital Services and Department of Public Health and Department of Family Health.

He explained that the team will brief the state Governor, Ben Ayade, on its evaluation before they departing from Calabar.

“Another team has also embarked on a fact-finding visit to Borno state”, Mr Ehanire said.
Commenting on the neglect of other essential services in health in both private and public hospitals throughout the country, he said, there are missions working on the restoration of normal services.

“… (The neglect of) reproductive maternal neonatal child health and nutrition immunization and chronic disease management due to fear of COVID-19 or due to also focus on COVID-19.”

“Therefore the missions are working to always include officials of national Primary Health Care development agency and Department of Family Health to press for restoration of normal Medical Services.” he said.

Health / Taraba Discharges All COVID-19 Patients, Records Zero Fatality by Osunwole: 2:21pm On May 19, 2020
The Taraba State Government on Tuesday said all active COVID-19 cases in the state have fully recovered and they have been discharged.

The state government stated this in a state wide broabroadcast by the Deputy Governor, Haruna Manu, adding that the state also recorded zero fatality from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Manu however noted that the state is still at risk of the present pandemic if all precautionary measures are flouted.

He said: “It is important for me to say that even with the present zero active cases of Coronavirus infection in the state, we cannot yet say that we are completely free of the risk of infection.

“We must, therefore, remain committed to those international protocols introduced by the World Health Organisation and which have been domesticated to serve our needs and purpose in the state.

“That means our people must continue to rigidly wash their hands regularly, wipe their hands with sanitizer, maintain social distancing, wear facemasks, avoid handshakes, and observe the lockdown order introduced by the state government.

“These are responsibilities which every individual must accept as their own contribution to the effort of the government to protect them against the pandemic.”

The Deputy Governor also revealed that the state government would remain proactive by acquiring more testing facilities to scale up its testing capacity.

He further announced the reopening of worship centres following the review of the lockdown which now allows human and vehicular from Friday to Sunday between the hours of 8 am to 6 pm, while maintaining that the “lockdown remains in force on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

“Inter-state movements are still restricted and violators will be severely penalised,” he added.

The Deputy Governor also announced the formation of a committee on the distribution of face masks and sanitation materials to Jumu’at mosques to be chaired by the commissioner for the environment, Dr. Kabir Ibrahim Getso.

The ethnic nationalities in the state will also constitute a similar committee to ensure the distribution of sanitation materials and the observance of Covid-19 protocol in their various churches.
