Many policemen resident in Traffic Training School Barracks, Ikeja, Lagos, say they are on the verge of being homeless following an order, directing them to vacate the barracks on Tuesday, March 31.

A notice to quit memo dated February 24, 2020 issued to the occupants by the Force Provost Marshal and signed by an Assistant Commissioner of Police, Ajewole Adebayo, stated that they would be forcibly ejected by Tuesday.

“You are by this letter directed to quit the Staff Quarters and Hostels of the Traffic Training School, Ikeja –an advance (sic) Traffic wing of Police College, Ikeja, not later than March 31, 2020.

     
“You should note that your staying on the premises is illegal. If you fail to vacate the premises before the said date, you will be forcibly ejected and further disciplinary action will follow,” it read.

But some of the affected officers, who spoke to City Round on condition of anonymity for fear of being sanctioned, stated that the apartments were duly allocated to them contrary to the provost’s claim.

One of them showed our correspondent a letter from the Commandant Police College and signed by the Officer-in-Charge, Barracks and Housing, indicating that he was authorised to occupy a flat in the barracks.

The policeman and father of four said they were shocked by the directive and not given genuine reasons for the imminent ejection.

He said, “We are serving officers, so why do they want to eject us? They said we have to vacate the barracks because we are not serving at the police college. Are we not under the same Nigeria Police Force?

“We met with the provost and he said the Inspector-General of Police (Mohammed Adamu) ordered that we should be ejected but we don’t believe him. We called some people close to the IGP and they told us he is not aware. So where did the order come from? Over 30 families are affected.

A female officer said she was stunned by the directive, adding that she had no idea where she, her husband and their three children would relocate to.

“How is it possible for us to relocate within that short period when we have families? Some people think they are senior officers and they can do whatever they like and get away with it.”

“By the time they eject us now, we will be running helter-skelter to find another place. Does it mean the people that want to move in are better than us? We all swear to the same oath of allegiance to serve our fatherland. We are not illegal occupants; the apartments were duly allocated to us by the police college authorities,” another policeman added.

When contacted, the provost, Adebayo, directed our correspondent to the Force Police Public Relations Officer, DCP Frank Mba.

He said, “Go to the Force PRO if you want any information.”

Calls put across to the mobile of the FPRO were not answered and he had yet to reply to a text message sent to him on the matter as of press time.

Coronavirus: Governor Wike Announces Closure Of Public Parks, Night Clubs And Cinemas

In furtherance of the commitment of the Rivers State Government to protect residents of the state, Governor Nyesom Ezenwo Wike on Monday announced that beginning Tuesday, March 24, 2020, all public parks, night clubs and cinemas will remain closed till further notice.

In a State Broadcast on Monday, Governor Wike directed religious groups to temporarily stop all forms of open worship.

     
He said: “with effect from the same date(Tuesday, March 24, 2020), all public parks, night clubs and cinemas in the State are to remain closed till further notice.

“Similarly, after due consultations with religious leaders, it was agreed that all religious organisations are to temporarily stop all forms of open worship . Public burial and wedding ceremonies are also banned within this period.

Nigeria’s Coronavirus cases continue to rise as the Nation’s capital, Abuja, has recorded another case.

This is coming a day after three cases were confirmed on Saturday in the Federal Capital Territory.

With the one additional case confirmed by the Federal Ministry of Health, the country now has a total of 27 cases of which two has been discharged after testing negative to the pandemic disease which originated from China late last year.

     
Currently, Lagos state has 19 cases, Abuja 4 cases, Ogun 2 cases while Ekiti and Oyo has 1 case each.

The National Association of Polytechnic Students (NAPS) has urged the Federal Government to fast track implementation of white paper recommendations on removal of dichotomy between polytechnic and university graduates in public service.

NAPS National President, Mr Sunday Asuku, at a news conference in Abuja on Monday.

Asuku said the association had waited patiently for the past 14 years for the office of the Head of Civil Service of the Federation (OHCSF) to implement the white paper, but to no avail.

     
He said that the abolution of the dichotomy was approved by the Federal Executive Council in 2006 under former President Olusegun Obasanjo and reaffirmed by all his successors.

“However, the waiting game has continued,” he said.

The NAPS president said that the delay in implementing the white paper was a deliberate attempt to continue to hold the technological advancement of the country to ransom.

“We are yet to see reasons and justification against why OHCSF is reluctant to approve the NATE/COREN proposed career progression template.
“However, we give the OHSCF a 21-day ultimatum to issue implementation circular to the federal government white paper as approved by FEC in 2006.

“Which, among others, directed that the undue dichotomy and ceiling on grade level/rank attainable by HND holders should be removed,’’ he said.

Asuku also demanded that the proposed career progression cadre for Technologist Engineers submitted by COREN for approval and integration into civil service scheme be approved by the OHCSF.

This, according to him, should be in line with the civil service rules to empower professional bodies to recommend career progression structure for their members.

He added that HND holders who were due for promotion should be allowed to take part in the promotion examinations for vacant positions in their respective professional cadre.

Asuku said that all HND holders who were previously denied promotion, or stagnated for several years, and those who were demoted upon conversion to officer cadre among others should be included.

A pipeline explosion has occurred at the Abule-Ado area around Festac town in Amuwo Odofin local govt area of Lagos state.
The massive blast has reportedly rocked neighbouring areas, sparking a massive blaze that has destroyed nearby buildings including a school.
Plumes of smoke have been seen rising into the sky, but our correspondent on the scene says the area has been cordoned off.
An eyewitness told our correspondent that a tipper offloading sand caught fire, which spread to a nearby pipeline, triggering the blast.
The director-general of LASEMA Dr Femi Osanyintolu confirmed that the pipeline had earlier been vandalized by unknown persons.
Many nearby houses have been destroyed by the blaze while the explosion damaged buildings around the area and its environs.
The Lagos State Fire Service says there are buildings on fire in Ado Soba, Abule-Ado, and Amuwo-Odo.

CAF medical experts will assess this weekend the measures hosts Cameroon have taken to combat the coronavirus pandemic ahead of the African Nations Championship (CHAN).

The central African country is scheduled to stage from April 4 to 25 the biennial competition for footballers playing in their country of birth.

Cameroon reported two cases of the deadly COVID-19, which has shredded sports schedules across the globe.

On Friday, CAF postponed indefinitely two rounds of 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, set for March 25 to 31.

Regarding the CHAN, a CAF statement said the delegation “would assess the preventive measures taken by the local organising committee”.

Matches are due to be played in the capital, Yaounde, at two stadiums in second city Douala, and seaside city Limbe.

Cameroon qualified automatically for the 16-nation tournament and the other title contenders include defending champions Morocco.

Meanwhile, a two-day conference scheduled for March 17-18 in Durban that would have highlighted the African football industry has been postponed because of the coronavirus.

FIFA secretary general Fatma Samoura had been invited to give the keynote speech at an event the organisers now hope to stage in July or August.

Former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode has expressed fear over Nigeria as he states that something terrible may happen in the country soon.

The former minister stated this amidst security challenges in the country with bandits, kidnappings and terrorism occuring becoming the order of the day.

Femi Fani-Kayode tweeted: “I have a bad feeling and terrible foreboding about what may happen in Nigeria in the next few months.


“We need to pray hard, ask God for mercy and ask Him to deliver us from what lies ahead. May He preserve the peace of our nation and may the counsel of satan not stand over our affairs.”

Earlier today, Concise News reported that Femi Fani-Kayode stated that the terrorism bedevilling Nigeria would have been history had it been former president Olusegun Obasanjo was still on power.

This video went viral a few months ago because of the autopilot’s ineffectiveness in detecting the cones on the road. In this case, Tesla picked some cones but nothing serious to report.

The new update has been requested all over the world and is now starting to reach all vehicles with autopilot.

President Muhammadu Buhari, Friday, stated that his vision and objectives for Nigeria are very clear and he is on course to achieving them.

Speaking when he received members of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), led by its President, Reverend (Dr,) Samson Ayokunle in State House, Abuja, President Buhari said he is doing his best to fulfil his electoral promises of securing the country, fighting corruption and resuscitating the economy.
President Buhari said that fighting corruption takes longer time especially with the need to adhere to the rule of law.
“It is on record that some cases initiated by the anti-graft bodies since 2003 are yet to be concluded.
We will, however, not be discouraged.

Where monies have been recovered, such monies will not find their way back to the looters as I have directed EFCC to account for every money it has recovered and put them in a dedicated account,” President Buhari said.
Responding to the request of CAN for an overhaul of the intelligence gathering system , President Buhari said the burden of intelligence gathering involves everyone especially district heads , traditional rulers, opinion leaders and especially religious leaders that are very close to the grassroots.

He added that bandits who are operating in various communities live among the people and enjoined leaders of thought in various communities to avail security agencies of information about the criminals.
President Buhari also told the visitors that he had assurances from the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, that the 2019 elections will be free and fair as he has been victim of fraudulent elections and beneficiary of free and fair election in the past.

“When I decided to put on this Agbada to see what the people are seeing in it, I tried three times, 2003, 2007 and 2011, but the fourth time, in 2015, I succeeded.

They, however, called on the President, to, ensure that the security agencies are non-partisan as we head to 2019 elections; restore peace to troubled spots in Northern parts of the country especially in the Garshish District of Plateau State, and institute a judicial panel of enquiry to look into the killings in the North Central particularly the murder of Major General Idris Alkali (rtd) and the Royal Highness of the Adara Kingdom in Kaduna, Dr Maiwada Raphael Galadima.

They also called on the President to; ensure that Nigeria does not go back into recession; urgently resolve the issue of minimum wage and to task the security agencies to ensure the release of Miss Leah Sharibu and other Chibok girls still in captivity.

Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar , has said Boko Haram was formed by youths abandoned by politicians.The PDP presidential candidate stated this in a chat with The Africa Report while speaking on how he’ll counter the sect.

“I happen to know how Boko Haram came into being. They were offshoots of political thuggery. Politicians used those boys in Boko Haram to win elections and then abandoned them and then there were no jobs for them.

“It was the same thing with the Niger Delta. In 1998, I saw it myself and I warned people.“It’s going to be a multifaceted approach. It will involve negotiations. It will involve military action”, he said.

On the fate of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) Nnamdi Kanu and former National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki, Atiku noted that the rule of law must be respected.

The National Examinations Council (NECO), has shifted the commencement date of the November/ December, 2018 Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (SSCE) to Nov.19.

Abubakar Gana, the Acting Registrar of NECO, in a statement issued on Wednesday, recalls that the examination was earlier scheduled to commence on Nov.15.
