Dear Nairalander. Enjoy...
2nd December was my girlfriend (of 20 months)’s birthday. We have been friends for 30 months though. Meanwhile I had planned to propose marriage to her on that day. Thing is, I am resident in Lagos while she is in Enugu. In 2013, a coordinated surprise visit to Enugu wowed her birthday and she never stopped talking about how that was the most pleasant surprise of her life, not until 2nd December, 2014 anyway. So to douse her anticipation for any form of surprise, I got really involved in planning her 2014 birthday. During one of my visits to Enugu, we had dined at Octopus, an exquisite Chinese Restaurant that has got lovers of good meals in ‘042’ wanting for more. I loved the ambience and the meals were really amazing. We decided to host her birthday there. Hers was to make all the inquiries, invite her friends, have fun and be happy. Mine was to fund the dinner which I did with all pleasure. Of course there couldn’t be any more surprises when she was already aware of the ‘whole’ package. Besides, my work couldn’t allow me time-off on a Tuesday.

Then …..

I arrived Enugu at 4.15pm having been to work earlier on the day and checked into my hotel room. I had the Manager of Octopus come meet me and we concluded on the 3-level surprise.

Level 1.
After the starter has been served, she was invited (with her friends) to see a video clip on screen of the 60” television in the restaurant. Behold it was me (JIRO) wishing my baby-girl a happy birthday and apologizing for missing her ‘big’ event. Towards the end of the clip, my sister and cousins joined me to sing the traditional ‘happy birthday’ song. Twinkle was so wowed and crying by the end of the rendition. “This JIRO will not kill me ooo” she muttered in her tears. Then……

Level 2.
As the video clip ended, I walked into the restaurant! The wow feeling turned into a positive frenzy. She was speechless as she ran to her star. “Baby, why do you always do this to me” was all she could say as she cried in my arms. Yes, am badt like that….hehe.

Level 3.
After I settled in and ordered some more champagne, the management of Octopus brought a bowl of what they dubbed their traditional gift to all birthday celebrants in the restaurant. Since I was there, it only made sense that they hand the package over to me (as the boyfriend) to appoint any of the diners to open it or open it myself. And my speech happened…. “… anyway, everybody may be worthy but I don’t see any person that is more worthy than you (twinkle) today to open this special package from Octopus….” By the time she opened the bowl, her friends and other diners were already gathered by our side to take a sneak peek, my one knee was down and I continued “…there are no better words than the three words that make up ‘I Love You’. You have been a friend, you have been bla bla bla bla bla bla and all dem beautiful things” And … “now I ask you, Chisom Onyinyechi Ogbuji, to make me the happiest man in the world and be my wife, please……

And she said YES!

And we changed into our tees that read “OMG Jiro asked!” with all them smileys for her and “…and Twinkle said YES… of course!” for me.

Love is indeed a beautiful thing. Give love always and appreciate love when you have it. May God make our dreams come true and our earnest desires fulfilled, Amen!

Now we plan for our future, together. See the photos below...

CelebritiesAPC Donates N5 Million To Kano Bomb Blast Victims by pamcom(op): 5:31pm On Dec 04, 2014
The All Progressives Congress (APC) on Wednesday donated five million naira to victims of Friday’s bomb blast at the Kano Central Mosque.
The APC National Chairman, John Oyegun, announced the donation when he paid a condolence visit to Governor Rabi’u Kwankwaso at the Government House, Kano.

Oyegun said the party deemed it necessary to donate the token in order to support the victims of the most unfortunate incident.
“I want, to on behalf of the APC, to convey a truly heartfelt condolence and sympathy to the government and people of Kano State over the sad incident.

“We share your grief and the people of Kano over the sad and unfortunate event. We wish to make a token donation of five million naira in support of the victims of the blast,’’ he said.

He said that the recent incidents in Kano State and Damaturu clearly underscored the need for increased, concerted efforts to end the insurgent activities, to save the country from anarchy.

He, however, commended Kano State Government for the support and assistance it extended to the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) from the North-East.

“Let me use this opportunity to commend you because we are not unaware of the support and assistance you are giving to IDPs from the North-East.’’

Responding, Kwankwaso, represented by his Deputy, Abdullahi Ganduje, thanked the APC leadership for its concern.
Kwankwaso assured that the state government would continue to work with various security agencies in order to ensure security of lives and property of the citizenry.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Oyegun was accompanied by other national officers of the party.

PoliticsNigeria To Get N88.7bn Abacha Loot From State Of Jersey by pamcom(op): 11:13am On Dec 03, 2014
The loot of late dictator General Sani Abacha still remain in parts in several states around the world, despite the fact that Nigeria has already recovered over $1 billion.

The new sum expected is about N88.7 billion.

State of Jersey, the biggest territory in the Channels Island, is set to return £315 million Abacha loot to Nigeria. The Island state had previously been returned to Nigeria in two tranches £140 million of the loot.

Micheal Birt, the Ballif of Jersey, disclosed this at a dinner in honour of Dr Dalhatu Tafida, Nigerian High Commissioner to the UK during a state visit to the Island.

Birt, who doubles as the Island’s Civic Head of State and ceremonial head, is the highest ranking official in the Jersey order of precedence.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the money was laundered on behalf of Abacha by Mr Raj Bhojwani, an Indian businessman, who is currently serving an eight-year sentence in a UK prison.

Birt said that the decision of the State to return the loot was in line with ongoing campaign against money laundering. The Island is known globally for its transparent banking services, but the perception that it is safe for money laundering is building up.

“We have done a lot to clean up the image of the Island as a safe haven for stolen wealth. What we have in place is a transparent and legal finance heaven where only legal funds can be deposited and accessed by investors.”

Tafida commended Birt for the Island’s transparent banking sector, and informed them of government’s commitment to fighting corruption and strengthening its anti-graft agencies.

He also emphasized Nigeria’s impressive economic growth and high return on investment rate.

“The array of investment opportunities that abound in the country and generous incentives available to investors in all sectors of the economy, has continued to make it a global investment destination,” Tafida said.

Music/RadioMusic Producer, Others Arrested With N374million Worth Of Banned Substances by pamcom(op):
An Asaba based music producer, Micheal Okafor (pictured above) and three other Nigerians based in South Africa namely, Obi John Chukwuenyem, Gilbert Kelvin and Deborah Ifeoma, have been arrested by officials of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for having in their possessions, banned drugs weighing 41.625 kilogrammes comprising 36.675kg of methamphetamine and 4.95 kilogrammes of cocaine with an estimated street value of over N374,625million.

The suspects were all arrested at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport (MMIA) while departing and arriving Nigeria. Speaking on their arrest, the Lagos Airport NDLEA Commander, Mr Hamza Umar said Obi John Chukwuenyem (48) was arrested with 21.695 kilogrammes of methamphetamine found inside his bag; Gilbert Kelvin (37) with 9.980 kilogrammes of methamphetamine concealed inside solar security lamps; Deborah Ifeoma who is a mother of seven (40) with five kilogrammes of methamphetamine packed inside foodstuff while Okafor Michael (44) the music producer was with 4.95 kilogrammes of cocaine hidden inside silicon sealants.

When interrogated, some of the suspects said they were not aware the drugs were concealed in their goods. Obi John who lives in South Africa, said he ventured into the business so he could pay his children's school fees
“I struggle to feed my family by selling foodstuff. Now, the business is near-moribund. A friend met me on my birthday and introduced me into drug trafficking. He promised to pay me 15,000 South Africa rand. My children are out of school because of my inability to pay tuition fee. This is the first time I would deal in drugs and I regret everything. I pray to be out of this problem” he said.
Gilbert, who claims to be into importation and exportation of phones and clothes, said he has five children from three women and has suffered major loses in his business
“My business is grounded and I now live from hand to mouth. My South African friend for over ten years gave me solar lamps where the drug was found. He used to assist me financially and he also promised to pay my children’s school fees.”
Deborah who is a mother of seven said
“I take care of my seven children from selling foodstuffs. I came to Nigeria to buy foodstuffs like melon, vegetables and other local spices. I approached a man in South Africa for financial assistance to enable me expand my business. He called me that somebody would give me some food items for him. When I got to the airport, NDLEA officers detected methamphetamine in the package given to me by the man. This was how I found myself in this situation”.

For the Asaba based musician who was coming into Nigeria from Brazil when he was apprehended, said he was not aware the hard substances were in a bag a friend gave him to deliver to someone in Nigeria
“I am a music producer. I traveled to Brazil to promote my music label and to partner other producers. I had a successful deal but on my way back, I accepted a bag from a friend I met in Sao Paulo to take to Nigeria. When I got here, NDLEA demanded to search and 29 out of the 34 sealants were found to contain cocaine. This is a major setback for my career and I feel very bad.”
