Girl, 18, kills mother over order to cook

Choba: A girl of about 18 years has killed her mother in Rumuchakara village in Choba town, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State.
Choba town, one of the communities that plays host to the University of Port Harcourt (Uniport) witnessed rowdiness after a young girl allegedly killed her mother with a plank.
A source that is privy to the family said that disagreement had ensued between the young lady whose name withheld and her late mother on Wednesday evening after the mother had asked her to go and prepare the night meal.
The source said that the young girl protested that she would not cook and that made her mother to slap her. Vanguard gathered that after her mother slapped her for refusing to cook that the little girl picked up a plank and smashed her mother’s head.
Vanguard also gathered that every efforts made to save the life of the woman from the fatal injury she sustained did not yield positively.
The source revealed that the whereabouts of the girl is yet to be known since the news of her mother’s death broke up, Thursday. But the leaders of the community have passed a decree that the young girl should not return to the community anymore.

Senegal parliament votes to scrap Senate

The National Assembly of Senegal’s parliament has passed laws to scrap the Senate, or upper house, and the post of vice-president, the APS news agency reported Thursday.
Both are widely considered too expensive for the poor west African country’s budget.
President Macky Sall last month announced emergency legislation to scrap the Senate and turn over its annual budget of almost eight billion CFA francs (12 million euros, $16 million) to dealing with the impact of deadly floods.
At least 13 people have been killed in several weeks of flooding and thousands left homeless.
The post of vice-president, created in June 2009 by former president Abdoulaye Wade but never filled, was allocated an annual budget of more than two billion CFA francs (three million euros).
The institution was strongly criticised in June 2011 when Wade introduced a bill stating that if the president resigned, died or was unable to carry out his duties, he would be replaced by the vice-president.
Many of Wade’s critics claimed he was setting up a system for his son Karim, who held a ministerial post, to succeed him, but Wade denied having such “monarchical” plans.
He was defeated at the polls by Sall in March after 12 years in office.
The legislation, approved by the lower house on Wednesday, will shortly go before the 100-member Senate itself, before it is passed by Congress, which unites both houses, and then signed into law by Sall.

I just wish this can happen in Nigeria too.

As part of the federal government’s cost measures,
President Muhammadu Buhari has directed that
nine of the VIP transport aircraft under the
presidential fleet should be sold.
Industry sources informed THISDAY that the
presidential fleet, which are registered as Nigerian
Air Force aircraft, is one of the largest in Africa and
the third largest in Nigeria after Arik Air and
Aerocontractors.
According to an aviation source, who is aware of
the directive to sell the aircraft, the presidency has
a number of serviceable and unserviceable aircraft
that need to be disposed of in order to reduce the
amount spent by the federal government for
aircraft maintenance annually.
“Nine, which still have market value, are to be sold
immediately to reduce maintenance costs,” he
said.
For years, the federal government has spent over
N12 billion annually for the maintenance of the
presidential fleet.

PRESS STATEMENT BY MRS IBIM SEMENITARI

On Thursday June 18, 2015, over 10 policemen armed with machine guns and in two trucks -
One Ford Transit and
One Hilux
arrived my residence, No 12 A Ernest Ikoli Street, Old G.R.A Port Harcourt. Without either a search warrant, letter or precious information, they forced their way into my premises.
My security guard on duty requested to know their mission and who sent them. They refused to disclose either, but went round taking photographs and videoing my premises. The security guard got in touch with my assistant who spoke with the men, explaining to them that I was out of town and again requested to know their mission and purpose. Again they declined insisting on seeing me first. She then got in touch with me by phone as we were uncertain as to the identity of the policemen in question.
Upon further investigation and after about 3 hours of them laying siege on my premise, I was told that they were from Rivers State Government House and had been sent to recover vehicles in my possession. They attempted to break into a Range Rover Jeep belonging to my Husband and bought long before I was made Commissioner in Rivers State Government, damaging the front door. The vehicle in question contrary to the lies being paraded is not an armoured vehicle and has never at any point belonged to the Rivers State Government nor its agents including myself as Commissioner of Information.
By the time I finally made contact with them and expressed my displeasure, they insisted that they would take away a Lexus jeep duly allocated to me as Commissioner of Information and which by law I am entitled to leave with upon leaving office.
The monetization policy of the government allows public officers to leave government with their official vehicles as this is in lieu of vehicle, allowance, transport and other allowances, which they cannot draw because of the monetization policy of 2002. Mr. Nyesom Wike served as Chief of Staff, and upon departure left with all the vehicles he used as Chief of Staff. This has been the practice since this democratic dispensation when President Olusegun Obassanjo instituted the monetisation policy.
Having served as Commissioner for two tenures, I am entitled to my status cars and have proof of allocation. While I understand that Mr. Wike feels a dire need to destroy the reputation of Governor Amaechi and all those worked with him, it is unacceptable that he will engage in brigandage, thuggery and underhand tactics to do so. A simple letter from any government official requesting me to make a submission or tender documentation would have been the appropriate way to go and I would have willingly tendered all the relevant documents to them.
Breaking into my home, invading my privacy, damaging my property and removing property from my premises is inappropriate and illegal.
I have chosen however to put out these details in the public space as it is apparent that for some persons only a destruction of my hard earned reputation would do and this I would not accept. My records in the Ministry of Information are crystal clear I hope that Mr. Nyesom Wike is able to say same about his tenure in every office he has held.
Forcing their home into my home unlawfully isn’t the appropriate way for any government that claims legitimacy to behave.
