...Impersonates Air Marshal Nsikak Eduok's Son By Prince Bassey, UYO A middle-aged man identified as Francis Eduok has been accused of stealing a phone belonging to a Facebook friend (name withheld) when they met for a business transaction in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital, IBOM REPORTERS have gathered. According to the lady who shared the ugly experience on Facebook, the man had made enquiries about products sold by her which she had advertised on social media and indicated interest in buying some of the items. "On Sunday he called me, that he is in Port Harcourt and requested to meet me to buy the products. I couldn't see him because I was in church when he called so I agreed to meet him on Monday. "He called again on Monday and told me to meet him with the products at Orasi which I agreed because I had confidence in him because he is from Akwa Ibom and we were speaking our language," she said. Continuing, the lady said, "I met him at an eatery, showed him the products I had and others on my phone, he agreed to buy 3 which I did not have with me and told me that he wants to call his driver to come pick him to go and withdraw money from the nearest ATM and give to me so i can get them for him, I agreed and he suddenly complained that his phone was about to go off, that I should dial the number on my phone which I ignorantly did. "He collected my phone and stepped out to call the person, when I followed him he entered where I couldn't locate and went away, switched off my phone and came here to block me. I know that my phone is gone but am posting this to save others from falling victims because he shares more than 100 mutual friends with me here." Meanwhile, a lady (name withheld) who corroborated the story of the Lady said, "This son of a beast named Francis Eduok was disgraced on social media last year because of extreme fraudulent activities. He was my Facebook friend who comment so decently on almost all my post condemning sin such that you'll think he's a Pastor just to convince and lure victims to himself as a saint. "He would come to my inbox to applaud me and concur to morals till you'll even get confused he's very responsible and think that people only blackmailed him. But then he's a CHEAP THIEF! I unfriended him based on another shameful post that went viral about him on Facebook here last year after I made enquiries about him via Nsikak Eduok's nephew, because he claimed to be Nsikak Eduok's son based in America only to be told by the guy that he's never related to them, their family, let alone be his uncle's son. That the crook is an impersonating armed robber. None of Nsikak Eduok's sons bears Francis. Man's inhumanity to man. He's trying to soil Nsikak Eduok's name and family but he has failed." "The NYSC is full of young men and women who are capable of churning out ideas and projects that will impact on the lives of the people of the community they're serving. "I'm not surprised that our Corp Members are beginning to make impact in Akwa Ibom State. Yesterday, I was at Ikot Ekpene Local Government to commission projects executed by Corp members. Today, I will also be heading to a community in Itu Local Government to commission another set of projects all executed by Corp members serving in that community. "We've always told our Corp members to identify the pressing needs of the community before embarking on any project. I also want to say that no Corp member can embark on any project without the support of the community. This project is your own, protect it from abuse and vandalization", Mr Akhaneme echoed. Earlier, Miss Utsunung, a native of Obudu Local Government Area of Cross River State had said she was motivated by her educational attainment as a female child to make a difference. I want to use this medium to appeal to the market union to please secure and protect this project”, the visibly elated Corp member maintained. Recounting the challenges faced during the execution of the projects, Utsunung said the main limitations were the unavailability of funds which she attributed to the economic recession currently confronting the nation as well as the difficulty in convincing people to believe in her dream. She also used the opportunity to express her profound gratitude to those who supported her throughout the execution of the projects especially Members of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, Commissioners, Uyo and Itu Local Government Councils, Traditional Chiefs, Market Union, as well as public spirited individuals in the state. By Ukpong UKPONG- All things being equal, there is a cumulative offer of over N158.4million monthly for tomato farmers and entrepreneurs currently engaged in mass commercial production of tomatoes and other high income vegetables in Akwa Ibom state. The growing market prospects for tomatoes makes these delicious berry fruits one of the most sought after farm produce in Nigeria. Currently, several high volume off takers and fruits marketers associations from neighbouring states have indicated interest in buying from the farmers. Infact, they are urging the farmers to increase their current acreage and plant more tomatoes. Projections indicate that in a month over 300 truckloads of tomatoes alone would soon be leaving the state when the cultivation is at its peak. Each of these trucks would carry at least 550 baskets and farmers shall rake in N5.28 million every day with average monthly income of N158.4million. VIDEO: ANOTHER TOMATO HARVEST IN AKWA IBOM STATE >> https://web.facebook.com/ibomreporters/videos/1248534068516169/ Speaking exclusively to Investors Eye, the Chairman of all the markets in Rivers State and the Chairman of Fruits Garden Market, Port Harcourt, Chief Maxwell Nwela, expressed much enthusiasm in doing business with tomato farmers in the state. Maxwell, who was on a tour of tomato farm holdings in the state, stated “I am here, in Akwa Ibom State, to ascertain information we heard that Akwa Ibom farmers are producing tomatoes, onions, pepper, cabbage and other fruits and vegetables. “So, if I can be opportune to get these produce here, this is my backyard, then there is no point for me to be going far north because it costs a lot of money to transport vegetables back to Port Harcourt. He noted however that although the species and quality of tomatoes cultivated in Akwa Ibom State, are the best in the country, they are currently insufficient to feed the huge demand for the produce. “We will make Akwa Ibom State our tomato destination rather than going to Kano, Jigawa, Sokoto, Zaria and others. This state shall be our trade partner if we can have tomatoes and other vegetables in good quantity from here. “The quality and varieties of tomato are good enough but the quantity is not enough. If farmers in Akwa Ibom state can increase the quantity of farms cultivating tomatoes and other vegetables such that we can get the produces on daily basis we will be very glad”. He also appealed to state government to assist them with transport logistics to convey the produce to Rivers State. Responding, the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Technical Matters and Due Process, Elder Ufot Ebong, who was on hand to show the business magnate around, reassured the chairman farm produce dealers in Rivers state that Akwa Ibom state is eager to meet they market demand. Ebong disclosed that already there are over 600 hectares of farmland designated for cultivation of tomatoes and other vegetables. He said the cultivation of these vegetables are a result of careful study, practical demonstrations in farm environments across the state and strategic repositioning of the state as a produce destination in the country. “We are not just waking up to engage in these projects. Since last year February, we have cultivated silently in rainy season and now the dry season, so we can produce all year round. “Now that the story is out to Akwa Ibom people, we have on offer more than 600 hectares for cultivation and as I am standing here, we have cultivated more than 17 hectares. “You have seen all sorts of fresh peper, cabbage, egg plant, garden egg, millions of stands of onions and we will plant more. Elder Ebong added that since the work went out Akwa Ibom people have shown their readiness to cultivate. Going down memory lane, he recalled how the project started, saying “our Governor Udom Emmanuel says – All you need is all you have. We have arable land why can’t plant these common vegetables. “So, we began with 22 of these vegetables including radish, lettuce, spring onions, cabbage, tomatoes, watermelon, egg plant and others. In fact, all those farm produce we used to import can grow productively on our soil and I guaranteed you that Akwa Ibom State will satisfy that market”. He also assured the farm produce dealer that state government will look into his appeal with an objective of drawing up a mutually beneficial arrangement. Meanwhile, The deputy director, procurement at the National Research Institute for Chemical Technology (NARICT), Alhaji Bello Abubakar has revealed that Nigeria is losing over N15 billion annually to importation of processed tomato. Before the operation started, two of them locked the entry and exit doors of the hall before ordering everyone to lie flat on the ground.” “Their intention was just to pick few things they could find because it would have been impossible to rob over 200 students at a stretch.” “At that point, all they did was to pick laptops and phones that were being charged in front of the hall. The operation barely lasted for five minutes because in the ensuing drama, students began escaping through the windows. I also jumped through the window and got myself injured in the process. I couldn’t risk my tab that I’m using to prepare for my exams and other academic research.” On the number of items stolen, he said it was impossible for him to give a clear number but said he knows a few people whose laptops were taken away but insisted that a great number of smartphones were lost. He also debunked rumors of alleged rape and malhandling of students saying the robbers barely had time to complete their mission. Angered by the late response by security personnel in the campus who came blaring their sirens long after the armed bandits had left, the students embarked on a protest that lasted till the early hours of Monday. They bemoaned the insensitivity of the school management to the insecurity situation of the campus. A female student who got everyone laughing during the chat said she nearly urinated in her underwear at the sight of the gun that was wielded by one of the armed robbers. Meanwhile, condemnations have trailed the robbery attack with most people blaming the school management for overlooking the security situation of the school. Also, a student activitist in the campus has lashed out on the university’s management poor attitude towards addressing issues concerning students in the institution. He said, “Critically speaking, one cannot help, but blame management of Uniuyo, for failing abysmally, in its responsibility of providing full security for her students. Thus, the inability of the school management, to address the institution’s security challenges (through the security unit), even on the eve of the of the First Semester examination, questions the institution’s preparedness to attaining “world class educational standards”, as hoped by management of the school. The contemporary security challenges in the institution have not only raised critical questions bordering on formulation of her internal security, but also the recruitment and effectiveness of the security agents and their statutory responsibilities.” “Without meaning to sound immodest, it is high time the University management realised that there is no “security” on her campuses. What is rather obtained is the routine “gate keeping” or “vigilantism” by some old security personnel. Uniuyo is NOT safe, that is the bitter truth.” “See, “security” is not all about recruiting grandpas and stationing them at main entrances, with a duty of issuing and collecting tallies; even an untrained gatekeeper can do that. Security does not end at checking boots of vehicles, neither is it shutting the school gates at midnight.” “Security does not and cannot end at going round campuses to remove flexes, posters and banners on the walls of the University, even when owners of these materials had obtained permission. It is not blaring loud sirens to disturb students at night, in the name of security patrol. No, it is not.” “Security does not mean impounding the wares of innocent hawkers on campus and demanding “settlement” before releasing the items. Such frivolous and inhuman act cannot be termed “security”, even my village vigilante group can do that. Sadly, these are laughable acts that that have been mistaken for “security” by the institution’s security unit.” He also added, “The effects of these attacks and the quietness of the school management is not far-fetched, especially, as it is coming during examination period- when students should enjoy a serene atmosphere and peace of mind. One cannot shy away from the fact that yesterday’s robbery attack and previous ones may cause physical or psychological trauma on the students and may in the long run, affect the performance level of students in the first examination and other scholastic engagements.” Consequently, the Students Union Government President, Comr Kufre Samuel has enjoined students of the institution to remain calm as modalities are on place to checkmate the incessant attacks. GOV EMMANUEL'S 'ROYAL' HAND SHAKING: ANOTHER EMPTY RANT I've read several opinions and comments on this picture since yesterday and I begin to wonder why we give attention to baseless issues and try to raise dust unnecessarily. It is very worrisome that this discourse is now trending on Nairaland thereby portraying our dear state in bad light. Many people especially those who see nothing good in the administration of Governor Udom Emmanuel have taken it upon themselves to castigate the Governor for shaking the Paramount Ruler of Ikot Abasi Local Government Area, HRM Edidem Udo Ntok Obom with one hand while the other is in his pocket. Analyzing the picture, Governor Udom Emmanuel is seen discussing with the monarch which in no way portrays any formal greeting. From all indications, this picture does not in anyway portray His Excellency's disrespect to the traditional institution. It is common sense to deduce that the Governor had finished greeting the traditional ruler during the meeting with Ikot Abasi Stakeholders. It is also common sense to deduce that the Governor is listening to the Paramount Ruler with rapt attention, hence a clear symbolization of HE's respect to the revered monarch. Constitutionally, the office of the Governor is greater than that of the traditional ruler in the state. If the Governor CHOOSES to kneel, bend, squat or lie flat would be out of rare courtesy and not obligatory. Those criticizing the Governor are merely instigating hate. Such opinion as "If it was the Oba", or "If it was the Sultan" does not hold water. Welcome to Akwa Ibom State! Moving forward, should the Governor prostrate, kneel, bend, squat or lie flat on the ground while discussing with the monarch? We all know the answer! Governor Udom Emmanuel is not a disrespectful leader. Please let us respect our Governor and stop all this campaign of hatred! For once, let's see positivity in this government. The peaceful community of Itiam Etoi in Uyo Local Government of Akwa Ibom State was on Tuesday night thrown into chaos when a number of Hausa men attacked them, leaving a number of them wounded. According to a source at the scene of the incidence, who preferred anonymity, "the attacks began at about 10 pm when some people had slept. It would have been worse if there were many people on the street. They started cutting anybody they met on their way with machetes and clubs. Some of them carried iron rods and other forms of weapons with which they beat and wound people. They also destroyed the properties of people selling shops in the area". When this reporter asked about the cause of the attacks, another source said it involved a case of a stolen generator which was sold to one of the Hausa men. When the owner of the generator found out that the generator was sold to the scrap collectors, he apprehended them and the case was thought to have been settled, until last night. The source said the problem started when the man who bought the generator was another of his Hausa kinsman whom had accused of selling him out by reporting to the owner of the generator that the generator was sold to him and started to fight with him. An attempt by an Ibibio man in the area to separate the fight led to one of the fighting parties insinuating that the Ibibio man sided with his brother to beat him. He then went to his people to tell his brothers, who reinforced and went with him to attack anyone they met on the street. One of the victims, Mr. Itoro, said "I was sitting in front of our house when I saw them running with machetes towards me. But because I didn't have any problem with anyone I was not afraid, only for the to cut me in the face and continued to run on". Another victim, Mr. Ezekiel, said "I went to see my friend in the area only to see they running towards my direction. Since I did not know there was a problem, I was just walking on the street going back to my house. One of them lifted his machete to cut me in the head and when I blocked it with my hand, he cut my hand again and again. That is when I knew the matter was serious and started running". The man with the highest level of injuries, Mr. Ubong Okon, said they met him on his way back from work and descended on him. "I sure they wanted to kill me, but God saved my life as some youths who were drinking nearby came to my rescue. I thank God that I am still alive". When news men contacted the village head of the community, Eteidung Effiong Asikpo, he declined comment. But, the Chairman, Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) Rev. (Dr.) Ndueso Ekwere, while speaking to this reporter called for calm as everything will be brought under control "I want to urge the people to stay calm as the police and the authorities have waded into the matter. I also want to urge all law-abiding citizens to go about their normal duties as culprits will be made to face the full weight of the law". Meanwhile, youths in the community have declared that they don't want the Hausa men in their community again. The youths who came out in their numbers chanted war songs, calling on the "abokis" to evacuate their communities since they are no more safe in their own land. "Aboki must go... Aboki must go... Aboki must go ..." they chanted. Meanwhile, some shop owners in the area have closed their shops, fearing another spate of attacks. The Hausa men have been evacuated from the community by the police to an undisclosed location. SEE MORE PHOTOS HERE >> http://www.ibomreporters.com/itiam-community-attacked-by-hausa-scrap-men-photos/

By Inibehe Effiong - A young man by name Jerry Edoho, a Journalist and Deputy Editor of the Ibom Nation Newspaper, from Eket Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State sighted me at the Ibom International Airport, Uyo some minutes ago and alerted me that he is being taken forcefully to Abuja by a team of plain cloth security men over a publication on Facebook. He told me that he was tagged in a post about the recent rumoured crash of a Dana plane which was false. That upon being tagged, he made a post like several other Nigerians asking whether the crash report was true. The security men are conveying him to Abuja via a Dana flight that is scheduled to depart by 4 pm.... The Publisher of The Ink Newspaper, Mr. NSIBIET John collapsed while he was in police custody, Thursday. The lanky journalist was taken to police cell at about 4pm after several statements were taken from him in a criminal defamation case instituted against him by the Deputy Governor of the State, Mr. Moses Ekpo popularly called Uncle Mo. Nsibiet who is an ulcer patient has been starved of food since he was arrested early morning. A petition of criminal defamation against the publisher was sent in to the Nigerian Police Force by the Deputy Governor signed by the Permanent Secretary, Office of the Deputy Governor. The publisher had raised alarm back in September that he has escaped assassination attempts. He was picked up this morning after being trailed for several months by the security outfit. TheMail Newspaper learnt on good authority that Nsibiet was betrayed by a close colleague who was paid by the police to tell them how they can capture Nsibiet. The police then studied Nsibiet’s routes and movements, before capturing him today. This morning, a mufty wearing police man who had stationed at Uma Ukpai Evangelistic Association, Four Lanes, flagged down Nsibiet’s vehicle after he drove out from his Osongama residence. Thinking that the person who flagged him down wanted a lift, Nsibiet stopped his car but on entering the vehicle, the man identified himself as a police officer, brought out a paper which showed Nsibiet’s number plate. He radioed force Headquarters, Ikot Akpanabia to confirm from the person on the other end of the conversation if it was the number plate they had earlier detailed him to work on. When it was confirmed, the police officer told the publisher that he was wanted at the force headquarters alongside the car. Immediately, a police Hilux van drove behind them enroute the force headquarters, Ikot Akpan Abia........ Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom, has sympathized with his Akwa Ibom counterpart, Governor Emmanuel Udom, over what he described as the tragic loss of many worshipers when the Reigners Bible Church collapsed in Uyo last Saturday. The Governor also visited the family of a deceased staff of his office, the late Mrs. Philomena Mwarga Musa, in North Bank, Makurdi, yesterday where he directed the Head of the State Civil Service to employ the daughter of the woman. In a condolence letter to his colleague, he stated that the collapse of the building was unfortunate and regrettable. “I was deeply saddened by the news of the collapse of the uncompleted church building which left dozens dead and scores injured throwing the state and entire nation into mourning,” the Governor Stated. “Be assured that the people of Benue State stand with you in this trying moment.” He prayed that God would give those who lost loved ones, members of the church, the Christian community, the Governor, the government and entire people of the state the fortitude to bear what he described as the irreparable loss. Governor Ortom urged that action must be taken to forestall re-occurrence of similar tragedies in future. During his visit to the family of his staff, he directed that Miss Iveren Agbor, first daughter of the deceased and a graduate of Theatre Arts at the Benue State University, be employed to fill the gap in the family which her mother’s departure had created. The Governor described the late Mrs. Musa as a dedicated staff who added value to service delivery to the people of the state and prayed God to comfort her family and colleagues. Apostle Akan Weeks, the General Overseer of Reigners Bible Church whose building collapse during the weekend has finally cleared the air on controversies surrounding his rumoured enthronement despite the tragic incident that nearly claimed the life of the Akwa Ibom State Governor, Deacon Udom Gabriel Emmanuel. In a telephone interview on Planet 101.1Fm, Uyo, the clergy who spoke in an emotion laded voice stated: “Apostle Akan Weeks is my name, it is very unfortunate that the incident that happened on Saturday during my Bishopric Enthronement, I call to say that God is still on the throne. “Only God knows best and nobody can question Him. And I want to say that for the departed souls and those who are injured, God will give them quick and speedy recovery.” “I want to tell every family that is in pains that our God is the healer. Let every Christian in Akwa Ibom state know that this battle is not all about Akan Weeks and his church, it is the battle between the kingdom of darkness and the church in the land.” READ MORE >> http://www.ibomreporters.com/apostle-akan-weeks-finally-speaks-says-hes-not-interested-bishop-title/ “Please, this is not the time to crucify me, I’m still your brother. Reigners Church family, I’m still your Pastor. The enthronement was cancelled completely and i am not interested. Please let us rise and pray. I really sympathise with the departed soul. By Ubong Sampson - Let me begin by notifying all that have been wondering if I am save that, so safe, healthy and hearty I am. Though many of you, despite having my contacts, refused to use them, but rather chose to wait until I mark myself safe on facebook. Truth is, I had prayed you wait forever. As a matter of importance, my heart goes out to the families, friends and associates of those who lost their lives in the tragic incident that occurred in the late morning hours yesterday at the Reigners Bible Church, along Uyo Village Road, while service was ongoing for the consecration/enthronement of Apostle Akan Weeks. Particularly, I use this medium to send out my heartfelt condolences to the family Mr Ernest Idem of the protocol unit of Governor Udom Emmanuel who was affected and who later died in the hospital. His case was most shocking to me, especially considering that we met earlier that same day, less than four (4) hours before the incident. Again, let me also thank God for my boss, Speaker Onofiok Luke of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, his wife and his entire staff, and of course, myself, being a member of staff. For the speaker, Apostle Akan Weeks is one man of God which the speaker holds high, and for this reason, so rarely fails to honour any invitation from him. In the last four (4) months, I have been in the speaker’s entourage to the Reigners Church about four times. And I am sure with the governor in attendance, the Speaker would have been in that church seated before the arrival of the governor. Also, for his wife who I heard was asked by Mr Speaker to represent him at the function, and was preparing for the function when the tragedy struck. For the members of staff, I am thanking God for whoever would have been on duty with the speaker on that day, from his protocol aides and especially his Chief of Security Details and Orderly who are usually seated right behind him. Now for myself, I recently applied for a two weeks absence from duty to attend to pressing academic needs which was to last till December 15th; but I recall getting home on the Friday preceding the tragic Saturday to confirm that the said Saturday was going to be a very idle one for me. While trying to figure out what to do to keep me busy through the day, I had placed a call through to the Chief of Staff to ask if Mr Speaker had returned or is expected the next morning so I could prepare for work. His response was in the negative. Now assuming Mr Speaker had returned from his Lagos trip before the event, I certainly would have been at work and perhaps in front of the church as at the time of the incident with my phone and iPad looking for space behind the governor’s security details to take photo shots. Whatever would have been my fate, I have been avoiding any thought on it, but whatever took my boss to Ogun State from Lagos, instead of returning home, must have been divine. Again for my friend, Samuel Ayara of AKBC. He was in his way to joining his camera-man colleague at the church when he met me on the way along Nwaniba by Sammies eatery. He stopped by and picked me, and without any meaningful topic, we spent over 30 minutes together when he was supposed to just drop me off and proceed to his destination. It was during this delay that the unfortunate incident took place and sadly, the colleague he was hurrying to join before meeting me was trapped by the falling rod and killed. When we spoke later in the evening of same day and he told me this, my mind quickly led me back to circumstances that took me to Sammies… how I went out with a colleague who wanted me to direct him to a place at Shelter Afrique Estate and suddenly developed a running stomach on the way. As we were driving home, it got so serious that I considered it a high risk to insist on getting home. That was how I took Sammies for an option to have a first-aid relief before getting home. Akwa Ibom Governor escapes death as church building collapses, many feared dead - the killerpunch news I came down from the convenience and decided to see a secondary school mate who lives along Udo Ikpe (the road beside Sammies). I met him and spent a short while with him, and he was seeing me off to the road when I met Ayara. Whatever would have been his fate, I cannot tell, but only God deserves the glory in all. Back to the incident. I had spent over five emotional hours at the scene watching the rescue team and security officials evacuate the bodies from start to finish. It was a terrible experience as more than twenty (20+) bodies were evacuated from the church site and driven away. And more emotional was watching mothers and siblings run after the vehicles that conveyed the bodies screaming in tears, even when the bodies were fully concealed in bags. Reason being that as long as they had their relatives in that church and were yet to ascertain their situation, there were chances the corpses could be theirs. It was indeed a black Saturday. In all honesty, I am yet to recover from the shock. It was inconceivable how humans slept and awoke with hopes, and committed no crime except dressing up to church, only to have their hopes terminated through a tragic death; but in all, who can question God? He remains the omniscient Supreme Being who can declare the end from the beginning. This now reminds me of the words of Comrade Ini Ememobong Essien in 2010 while, then as President of NANS, addressing students who gathered to mourn one Comrade Utomobong Akpan (of blessed memory), a 300 level student of Computer Science in the University of Uyo… Comrade Ememobong had said that nothing takes God by surprise, as He knows of every incident long before it occurs. Therefore, in all of this, we can only pray eternal rest for the souls of the departed. The incident of yesterday has attracted series of reactions and comments from persons within the public sphere. Constructive and destructive comments have taken up the public space. Different versions of the story have been heard from people who witnessed the incident, those who were privileged to visit the site after the incident and even those who were not even in the state and are yet to visit the state since the incident. Even the scores of death caused by the incident is yet uncertain, as different versions have been conflicting-ly reported, from 200 to 150 to 100 to 50 and then, the 21 that was reported by the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) yesterday. This has only ended up confusing the public the more, as well as mislead and misguide them in their comments and reactions. And sadly, the news has continued to filter with more spinned versions emanating in the process. This, of course is expected, as communication experts had already made clear that no information passed from one recipient to another can remain the same. This, they claimed, is consequent upon the fact that the secondary dispatchers of the information will make distortions, not deliberately though, but due to external inferences. As much as one may try to attribute these mostly misleading reports and reactions to circumstances attached to the human nature, especially in this part of the globe, truth remains that no one can, or ever will be able to convincingly deny the damaging consequences. Most surprising and ridiculous is the fact that some people hurriedly attached spirituality and divinity to the situation, telling us about what was planted and uprooted by God. How sad, especially when you get to realise that some of these ones, if asked, will not recall the last time they sought the face of God through prayers. And how they got their own revelations now becomes a deeper mystery than the boundaries of the world. Granted, lives has been lost, pains have been inflicted on families and friends. Survived victims too have their painful story to recount, especially those who may not have their physical abilities complete anymore. As humans, we have that natural touch of sympathy for our fellows in situations like this, but do we have to let our emotions override our sense of judgement? Do we have to cause more harm as solution to an already caused harm? Before yesterday, I had never taken time to look at the structure of the collapsed church, though I (not too often though) pass through the road hosting the church. But getting closer to the scene and making enquiries, I was able to establish certain factors that could have caused the disaster. And good enough, a structural engineer who also came to see things for himself, made some comments that confirmed my thoughts. As much as I recommend other arrests to be made subsequently, including the church building committee (if any was constituted) and the Apostle Akan Weeks himself, as they all may have played contributory roles in one way or the other, let me at this point commend Governor Udom Emmanuel for ordering the arrest of the contractor who took charge of the job. Here are my reasons for seeking his head first. As a professional, there are certain standards built by every profession as regards the practice. These standards have in many years stood the test of time, while proving to be the right approaches to perfect and safe job delivery. In the medical, legal and other fields, these standards are there as a perfect guide, and the engineering profession, certainly, is not an exception. While undergoing tutelage in the profession, I am sure he was not taught the kind of weight distribution that was done with the iron roofing rods. How can a professional of such level carry out even distribution of such weight with the intention of placing one end of a rod on a pillar, while the other end is suspended? What did he expect to hold the weight at the other end? His ancestors? And for how long can such suspense last? Whatever happened to the idea of an iron or concrete pillar at the central point to hold the rods, I do not want to research on, but then, even the concrete pillars that doubled as the church wall which the other end of the rod rested, was nothing to write home about, as they were so inferior and clearly did not meet the 28 days recommended span for such to dry, after being erected. Now even if the job was being hurried by the church for whatever reason(s), was it not his place to uphold the standards of his profession by advising the church properly? Why would companies like Julius Berger be setting high standards to their jobs and insisting on them even while lobbying for a contract? I recall when former works commissioner, Engr Don Etim told me during an interview with him that Julius Berger will propose to a client on how their job is being done and the required resources to deliver. And where the client cannot or is not willing to pay for the cost, the company will rather withdraw, than accept to do a substandard job. Now that is professionalism. ‘Over 50’ killed, injured in Akwa Ibom State Church building collapse For the church building committee and the pastor in-charge, their arrest should be the next development as regards this incident. They all should be investigated and whoever is found to have compromised for the purpose of acquring cheap labour or maximizing profit, should be prosecuted accordingly. To the government of the state and other authorities who will have this matter pass through their table, this is not a time to play politics or regard certain persons as sacred cows. This is an issue involving mass death. As you read this, families are grieving and groaning in pains. Some have lost their breadwinner, while others have lost their hopes in the future. Dreams and aspirations have been terminated prematurely as a result of this incident, therefore, we in the public space are spreading our eyelids so wide open, and with a pillar to suspend them to ensure there will be no collapse. And we will always be on the spot to raise a deafening alarm whenever and wherever we suspect foul play by way of deliberate or otherwise attempt to grant softlanding to any party involved in this, when such is not deserving of it. Now particularly to the should-have-been Bishop, I have been hearing this rumour of how you were secretly consecrated somewhere in Abak at a time when families were running to know the fate of their people who left home to attend your inconclusive consecration. While virtually everyone tends to sink unrepentantly into this rumour, I have maintained my stand on the other side. Not because I am believing you to be a saint, but my reason is simply that while no one from the opposite side, on the one hand, has been able to link me to their sources to ascertain the reliability, none of my sources, on the other hand, confirmed that to be true. That is why I have been taking insults, abuses and curses on social media since last night in the course defending you. Be that as it may, I pray and so pray that this does not end up being true, because then, you will have me as a lead antagonist. Do not forget, the truth will always prevail, and again, we all know your bishopric status is pending, as the process was inconclusive. Therefore you remain the Apostle that you were until another formal consecration is organised and the process, concluded. However, this we are not expected to hold anytime soon, as fixing the damage on your name and ministry is what we expect to take your focus in the next few years. Hence, you must not answer to the “bishop” title anywhere. So if you had by any chance woken up from sleep to find anyone consecrating you as bishop in any secret place, it is advisable you look for a cool, dry place in your home and store that very title for your personal use only. Should anyone mistakenly addresses you with it in public, you are expected to hurriedly call the person to order, lest, the public will demand explanations from you. Furthermore, let me appeal to my friends and colleagues in the public space using the words of my brother and friend, Ubon Marcus who spoke my mind in a piece I read on his Facebook wall last night… “This has once again re-echoed the need for opinion leaders and people capable of influencing public opinion and subsequent reaction to exercise such ability with utmost caution and only make conclusions after thorough investigation while taking varied perspectives into consideration. Sadly, most people who fall into this category failed in this regard. We allowed our emotions to get the better part of us and made hasty conclusions.” Finally, like he (Marcus) rightly concluded, this is a lesson we all must learn… learn to apply caution even while in moments of grief and fury… learn that since two wrongs have never made a right, no attempt(s) to force it can ever be productive… and finally, learn that as Christians, this is a time to seek the face of God and offer prayers to the afflicted, as well as surrender everything to God, rather than resort to passing outright judgments. The incident was tragic and sad, terrible, shocking, devastating and whatever word you may use to describe it… but while desiring to have Akan Weeks stoned to death, remember that his head, along with the heads of his entire family members, that of the contractor and everyone constituting the church authority will neither reverse the situation nor bring one dead soul back to life. It is no one’s fault, just as it was not the making of any mortal that certain persons were lucky to escape without a scratch, while some others were fairly lucky to escape but slightly or badly injured, and the rest, unlucky to die. God knows why everything went that way, just as he had powers to save everyone if He wanted to. All we can do at this point is pray for the departed souls, while also praying and buiding faith with God’s word that (such) affliction shall not rise a second time.
