it was even well documented in bbc. chai diya don kill we yorobbers.

Nigeria's weeping generals

Nigeria's Human Rights Violations Investigation Commission ended its sittings in the country's largest city, Lagos, at the weekend after five weeks of testimony.

All evidence was taken in the open and the sittings proved to be the dominant public attraction in the city.

The spectacle of the two weeping generals has since become the subject of scathing media commentaries on the calibre of some of the military officers who ruled Nigeria for 28 years

The petitions that attracted the largest audiences were those on the 1997 coup attempt against the dictator General Sani Abacha and the death of the politician Chief Moshood Abiola after four years in detention.

One person definitely must be regretting his decision to petition the commission over the alleged abuse of his human rights.

That person is the former number two man in the Abacha military government, Lieutenant-General Oladipo Diya, who was arrested, convicted and condemned to death for attempting to topple the government in December 1997.

Sympathy evaporates

General Diya came to the commission riding on the crest of public sympathy but he left the venue to boos and jeers from the spectators.

General Abacha
Blamed for human rights abuses
General Diya had complained that his arrest and trial were a set-up to eliminate him and other senior military officers of the Yoruba ethnic group of south-western Nigeria.

He said that there was in fact no coup plot.

However two other officers who were tried and condemned with him confessed that they did plan a coup and that General Diya was the mastermind.

'Coward'

He cut a sorry figure in the former Senate chamber as witness upon witness from the military painted a picture of the former number two man as a liar and a cowardly person.

The dramatic video film shot secretly as General Diya knelt and wept before General Abacha to seek forgiveness was shown to the public for the first time at the commission.

Again General Diya tried to denounce it as fake but his feeble effort was greeted with jeers from the gallery.

Former minister Major-General Abdulkarim Adisa, for his part, admitted that he wept and prostrated, begging for pardon before a junior officer.

Ridicule

The spectacle of the two weeping generals has since become the subject of scathing media commentaries on the calibre of some of the military officers who ruled Nigeria for 28 years.

The death of Chief Moshood Abiola in detention exactly a month after that of his captor General Abacha has returned to the fore in public discourse.

Moshood Abiola
Moshood Abiola: Death plot allegations
There is now evidence before the commission that, contrary to government statements at the time, Mr Abiola's death was not natural but the result of a conspiracy among some army generals.

Importantly also, thanks to the commission, Nigerians now know that their military rulers established special centres where political opponents were severely tortured.

One of the centres was built at the Lagos cemetery and another had long rows of pitch-dark underground cells.

To the chagrin of the public, however, none of the alleged torturers has so far shown any remorse.

The commission will sit in some other towns in eastern and northern Nigeria before returning to the capital Abuja in mid-January. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/africa/1076194.stm

lol....Napoleon fled to Island of St. Helena when defaeted by Wellesly while Chiang fled to Fomosa nw called Taiwan when defated by Mao Ts Tsung. So if they fled...that makes them a coward too??

Ojukwu fled when d war was lost. Captain Nwobosi one of the conspirators during the 1966 coup (he was d one dat killed Akintola) attested that some of the senior officers including Effiong the deputy had to literally force Ojukwu into d plane when Nigerian army was closing fast on the LAST Biafran territory. They saw what happened to Nzeogwu and Ironsi when they both captured. So Ojukwu is a cowrd because he refused to surrender to be butchered like Nzeogwu and co....smh

Madiebo, Effiong and other generals' grouse against Ojukwu is not dat he fled. It was abt d way d war was conducted. They felt Biafra would have put up more resistance if Ojukwu had been amenable to other war strategies.

Ojukwu is not a coward. There is no yoruba miliatry officer who comes even close to his pedigree.

U pple hate on him cos he did what ur generals cannot summon the courage to do.

i think i agree with u whole-heartedly

i have to admit it because there is nothing to gain by denying how diya has painted all yorobbers coward.

Remarkable:

Why are you the only one who is admitting that Diya is indeed a coward and not worth the uniform he was wearing?

All accounts of Aguiyi Ironsi and how he was killed says that until the shot was fired to him, he maintained his pride and ego as a soldier.. I fail to find the exact wors used to describe how he carried himself... upon all the blows and beating... trying to get him to admit knowledge of the coup, to which he only maintained his innocence and wasa mute till the end... when I read that ... it moved me...

but hearing of a General crying... itskind of unbelieveable... your brothers don't seem to see that as cowardice and think fleeing is what is cowardice... comedians I tell ya.

Igbos just took another L after an Igbotic supermod spammed this useless thread on FP.

Crying is therapeutic...just as Field Marshal Arthur Wellesley, one of the greatest army generals ever, also cried.

However, Ojukwu remains the biggest coward who ever liveth.

Ojukwu fled................................he'll forever be remembered for that. grin

But did they flee, while leaving their troops behind, at the mercy of the enemy?

How about put ya money where ya mouth is and post academic proofs?

Napoleon was a warrior. Yes, he did lose some wars but he never did an Ojukwu.

Ojukwu, apart from being a coward, who had to hide from bunker to bunker throughout the duration of the war, he fled like a biitch, with his troops and a whole nation left at the mercy of the enemy. That's just cowardly and wicked.

Hero of cowards.

I guess that's why those who emulate him always give useless ultimatums, no? Just bark everywhere like toothless bulldogs, the same way Ojukwu said he had the greatest black army in history, yet he gave them sticks and stones to fight, no?

I'm not throwing shots at decent Igbos - we're just having a discourse about who a real coward is. And Ojukwu personified it!

please this thread is about diya and co who betrayed we yorobbers. its so sad that we yorobbers have to live with this mark of cowardice.

Just like Bianca father C.C. Onoh and Major General Alexander Madiebo (an Igbo 2-star general in the biafran army) attested to how cowardly Ojukwu was. Madiebo in his book said Ojukwu was so cowardly during the war that he was scared of his own troops and other Igbos who weren't from Anambra. grin

The man was just running from one bunker to another, hiding like a biitch. And the only thing he left his bunker for was propaganda with foreign press. grin

He might be ya Uncle, but as someone who understands the military, I wouldn't call him a coward by any stretch.

However, Ojukwu has to be the biggest coward ever. Heck, even throughout the war, he never fired a single shot - he was moving from bunker to bunker, for more than two years. What's more cowardly than that?

i am not ibo but ojukwu is a hero by all standards. he held off nigeria for three solid years with matchet and stick. and he was up against world powers not even nigerian army. i must confess ojukwu is a symbol of bravery. its not easy to stand up to intimidation and bullying of his own people. if ojukwu had not stood up to fight it could have been worse than it was. i give to ojukwu any time anyday. that said, diya betrayed we yorobbers in that video.

By 1969, Biafra was on its knees and Ojukwu fled into exile in Ivory Coast. Twelve years later he was granted a pardon and returned to Nigeria where he formed the All Progressives Grand Alliance and ran for president in 2003 and 2007. In 2008, he received his military pension from the Nigerian government but complained that it ranked him as a lieutenant-colonel rather than as a general, his rank in the Biafran army.

^^^Who does that? grin Thank God Nigerians are sane people - other folks would've killed every Biafran left after that. He was the biggest coward ever. No ratings for the greatest coward ever! undecided

However, what war-time general runs away from the battle-field, while leaving his troops behind at the mercy of the enemy? grin

diya is my uncle and he is a coward. he never saw war but at the sight of abacha he cried. wat else can define an original coward than that? he belittled yorobbers in the sight of the world.

Nah, an army officer, especially a war-time general should NEVER flee from the battle-field.

Only cowards do that. You either fight till the end, or surrender.

the only bitterness gowon hold against ojukwu is that he never caught ojukwu. ojukwu beat him to the game. he was received in 1982 like a hero and when he died he received a state burial. u dont give a coward such heroic attention. where is our own diya today? wat of adekunle..nobody can tell wat happened to him because he was abandoned by the government he faught for. the video is not fair to we yorobbers but its not an excuse to cry over spilled milk

Muthaphucka, I'm having an interesting discourse here - don't derail the darn thread.

Move over!

i have to interupt because u are not making any sense but trying to prove to us that diya is not a coward. wat can be more damning that a so called general broke down in tears even without hearing the sound of a gun. i felt bad as a Yoruba but what can i do. should i kill mustafa for releasing the video? No!

stop crying over spilled milk. the damage on we yorobbers has been done already. i think we should take our pound of flesh from mustafa for daring to release such a damning video of our general. its so embarrasing that this singular video has portrayed us as a cowardly tribe.

Mortiple and stanech

I think I've found food for the both of you. grin

One of the greatest war generals ever to walk this planet, a field marshal (5-star general), the first Duke of Wellington, Field Marshal Arthur Wellesley. The same general who defeated Napoleon during the Battle of Waterloo and won many wars for the British Empire, from India, to Euroasia, to continental Europe - also cried.

In 1812, Wellington finally captured Ciudad Rodrigo by a rapid movement as the French went into winter quarters, storming it before they could react. He then moved south quickly, besieged the fortress of Badajoz for a month and captured it during one bloody night. On viewing the aftermath of the Storming of Badajoz, Wellington lost his composure and cried at the sight of the bloody carnage in the breaches. ref [Holmes (2002). p. 162.].

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arthur_Wellesley,_1st_Duke_of_Wellington

Crying can be therapeutic, though I'm not a fan of crying when things are bad - I only shed tears of joy. Now, show us any army officer in history that ever eloped from the battlefield, while leaving his troops at the mercy of the enemy, that wasn't court-martialed for being a coward.
