Health / I'm Ready To Fight"- Wife Of Late Ebola Victim Speaks by patpena: 11:38pm On Jul 30, 2014
It has been revealed that the man who recently died of Ebola in Lagos, is also an American citizen who has a wife Decontee Sawyer and three daughters in Minnesota.

The man lived in Minnesota for about a decade, but moved back to Liberia in 2008 but was scheduled to join his family in August. He was coming back to celebrate two of his daughters’ birthdays.
In an interview with KSTP, Decontee speaks on the deadly virus and how their three young daughters will never get to know their father anymore.

“I don’t want all of this to be for nothing. I have three girls who will never get to know their father.”, she says.
She also said that it is easy to think that Ebola is a problem on the other side of the world, but that is not entirely correct.

“It’s a global problem because Patrick could’ve easily come home with Ebola. Easy. Easy. It’s close, it’s at our front door. It knocked down my front door.”
She hopes the death of husband serves as a wake-up call. “This can happen anymore. I don’t want any more families going through what I’m going through. So I pray, and then I’m ready to fight.

Family / Drama In Yenagoa, As Married Man Attempts Suicide Over Girlfriend by patpena: 12:25pm On Jul 29, 2014
Tragedy was averted Friday morning at Bay Bridge road, Yenagoa, when a 40-year-old man, Ediekan, attempted to commit suicide as a result of his failed bid to have sex with a girl with whom he reportedly had a long standing relationship, sun news reports.
It took the timely intervention of his neighbours to save the situation. Ediekan, father of two children, was said to have been spending money to woo one Favour who lives within the same neighborhood to go to bed with him. But rather succumb to his pressure; Favour resisted all entreaties and kept on promising that she would eventually marry him.

http://chrisbassey..com/2014/07/drama-in-yenagoa-as-married-man.html

However, on Thursday night, Ediekan could no longer hide his frustrations when he discovered that Favour was going to bed with another man.
Sources told Sunday Sun that Ediekan immediately became emotionally depressed and began the plot to commit suicide within the compound. In an interview with our correspondent, his wife, Florence, confessed that her husband woke her up in the night complaining that all the people he loved did not reciprocate his love. According to her, he was such in a bad mood that he asked if she could take care of their two children if he dies.

She said “I was alarmed when he came in complaining that all the people he loved did not reciprocate his love. As his wife, I re-iterated my love to him, but he said he wasn’t referring to me, but one Favour whom he had spent so much money for and yet refused to return his gestures with love. He then asked if I could take care of our two children if he dies.

http://chrisbassey..com/2014/07/drama-in-yenagoa-as-married-man.html

At that point, I became worried and tried to discourage him from such negative thoughts. Early in the morning, as he stood up from the bed, I tried to hold him back but he broke loose and went outside. Even then, I didn’t know that he had already got a rope and some chairs where he intended to hang himself. But after a while, I saw him with a rope around his neck and his legs dangling in the air. I immediately raised the alarm and neighbours came around and used cutlass to cut off the rope.”

Some of his neighbours expressed disappointment over the incident. But Ediekan, unremorseful insisted that he would commit suicide, as he could not watch another man sleeping with Favour. Subsequently, Favour was persuaded to openly confess her love to him. Amidst the crowd of people, she obliged and even promised to marry him.
Following the assurance, Ediekan angrily told his neighbours to leave him alone to face his problems, adding that if he dies, people would take care of his children.
Sunday Sun learned that the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Ekeki on hearing the news deployed some of his men to the scene to investigate the incident.

Nairaland / General / US Doctor On A Mission Infected With Ebola In Liberia Outbreak by patpena: 12:43pm On Jul 28, 2014
A US doctor who has been in Liberia and battling the Ebola epidemic has himself fallen sick with the disease in Liberia, his aid agency said.
Dr Brantly who is married with two children, has been isolated at the group’s Ebola treatment center at the ELWA hospital in Liberia after he contacted the virus.

Samaritan’s Purse, a Christian charity, says the group is committed to doing everything possible to help Dr Brantly during this time of crisis. “We ask everyone to please pray for him and his family, a statement on their website reads”.
The Ebola virus causes severe fever, muscle pains, vomiting, diarrhoea and, in some cases, organ failure and unstoppable bleeding which kills within days.
Ebola is believed to be carried by animals hunted for meat, mostly bats. It spreads among humans via bodily fluids including sweat, meaning you can get sick from touching an infected person.

Patients believed to have caught the virus are mostly isolated to prevent further infection. Ebola first emerged in 1976 in what is now the Democratic Republic of Congo, and is named after a river there. Sadly, Nigeria recorded its first death on Friday, in a Lagos hospital. Just sad!

Music/Radio / Artists Abandoned Kefee’s Burial Because Theres No Love In The Industry- Showkey by patpena: 8:31am On Jul 27, 2014
Daddy Showkey in an interview with Leadership Newspaper has said there is no love in the music industry and musicians only pretend to love one and another, but when tragedy struck, one will see their true colour. He cited himself has an example, and how artistes shunned Kefee’s burial ceremony which took place in Sapele.

You were at Kefee’s burial, what are your thoughts?

Nothing much other than I was disappointed that artistes did not come to show love to their own. It is not a good thing. The lady died and it is sad for her family. Musicians ought to have showed up and rallied round her people, to show that they care. It was only the gospel musicians that showed up, meaning there is no love in this industry. Nobody cares about you if you drop dead tomorrow. I told you I was away for 3 years because of my spinal cord injury. Nobody came to visit me during that time. No one from my generation of singers came to identify with me and that is bad for a man who has given much to the industry. This makes me think that we don’t care about ourselves in this industry. As the Yoruba people say, Oju aaye ni a nse o meaning, na eye service we dey do to oursefu!
Are you saying you don’t have friends in the music industry?

http://chrisbassey..com/2014/07/artists-abandoned-kefees-burial-because.html

I don’t have a friend oh. This life wetin my eyes don see, no be small thing oh! That experience is enough to make you cut-off, because when they see me with money they associate with Showkey; but when Showkey had a challenge, an accident- no one could call or say we feel your pain. So me, I no get friend. My friends are those in Ajegunle that we can say the truth to ourselves. It is only Pasuma that I can call my friend- he comes to my house anytime and we chat about things.

Politics / I’m Going Into Politics So I Can Give Back - Desmond Elliot by patpena: 3:46pm On Jul 22, 2014
Desmond Elliot, a graduate of Economics of Lagos State University and talented actor has revealed to Nigerian Tribune why he is running for a seat in the Lagos State House of Reps. Here are the reasons he gave;

The current situation is very pathetic. I feel God has helped me thus far and I want to give back through politics that will be favourable to the youths. The worst part of our national life is that the level of corruption has not allowed youths to understand what it means to live a meaningful life . Just because of lack of knowledge of what to do, we are being side tracked.

There are no jobs, and issues like these lead to frustration.

A whole lot needs to be done on agriculture, every state in Nigeria needs to see how it can contribute to nation building. There’s a lot that needs to be done.

Politics / Lagos State Governorship Election:i’m Not Stepping Down For Anyone This Time-gos by patpena: 2:06pm On Jul 13, 2014
Lagos State election in 2015 is going to be hot. A lot of past aspirants have been showing interest in becoming the next Governor of the state and one time governorship aspirant, Senator Ganiyu Olanrewaju Solomon also says he is in the race and this time around he will not step down for anyone.
He says all he wants his party, APC, to do is to be fair in conducting the primary elections within the party. When a reporter at thegazellenews.com, who interviewed him on his governorship ambition, said, what if he got an offer to be the senate president, considering he is already in the senate, won’t he step down and take the position? Find his reply after the cut.... He also said as far as he is concerned Gov. Fashola (SAN) and Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu both have the same degree of education, and governance is not all about education anyway. The interview after the cut.

Sir, as a sitting Senator of the Federal Republic Of Nigeria representing Lagos West Senatorial District would you not mind being offered a return to the Senate as likely Senate President rather than running for the governorship?
Senate President, no, I don’t want. My aspiration is to become the Governor. You have a passion, you have what you want to do. It is not about what someone wants you to do; don’t give me what I don’t want.
How do you intend to wave the pacifying gimmicks of your party, if the party leadership says you should step down for another aspirant?
It is not possible because I know how we got to where we are. If in 2007, you said “you can’t go now; let’s allow this person – you will have the opportunity next time”. You want to call me now – so what are you going to tell me? That I have to wait again! You put my life on hold? You cannot.
You need to tell me what is wrong with me that makes me unsuitable for that position for a second time. And what makes that person so suitable that I need to sacrifice myself again. No! We start from where we stopped. It looked like eight years was long, so now you need to call me and let me know or we go to the primaries. And in primaries, you are not under any obligation to start to placate anybody.
You open your eyes, you collect your form. But the primary must be free and fair. You don’t conduct a kangaroo primary; just like what was done in 2007, allocating votes saying somebody scored this and that. I just laughed it off after I’d seen my name in the 4th position with others. So let it be free; fair and everybody knows their lot.

http://chrisbassey..com/2014/07/lagos-state-governorship-election-im.html

The man who has been anointed allegedly by your party is reputed to be an academic guru, what is your reaction to this?
If you want to sell a person forcibly as they are doing; that’s their approach. They put him in your face everytime and now – okay, he is a career civil servant. If I had been a civil servant, I’m not sure if I will be his contemporary, I will rather be his senior. In my own chosen field, I’ve proven myself so you access me from my chosen field.
You also access him on his chosen field because he’s been a career civil servant.
At a point in time, I chose to be a politician-public servant. If now you want to access our capability in any other way; that will be a thing that cannot be arranged. We are talking of administration, because at the end of the day, governance is about administration and we cannot now say there is a correlation between your academic pursue and administration. It hasn’t been proven that the more degrees you have the better administrator you are. So everything they have been brandishing is absolute nonsense, it cannot stand in any context.
We know for sure that Babatunde Raji Fashola, SAN, didn’t go to Oxford, or Cambridge, he attended University of Benin. So if we say that BRF performed, it’s not about the accumulated degrees. Unless you say Asiwaju didn’t perform or he says so himself and then, he needs somebody to perform better than him because I don’t know whether Asiwaju has a 2nd degree. He has a 1st degree like BRF, none afterwards.
We will go further, I’m not sure that Alhaji L.K Jakande has a degree and right now Lagos history cannot be complete without mentioning Alhaji Jakande.

If the information given is right, Baba Awolowo acquired most of his degrees in Nigeria and no one is yet to beat his record from those mentioned above because he had lots of his firsts in Nigeria that cuts across all sectors...

Nairaland / General / Policeman Attached To Wema Bank Shot Conductor & Caused Disorder On Oba Akran by patpena: 7:53pm On Jul 05, 2014
Just as we were yet to recover from the misconducts of some military men who caused commotion at Palmgroove yesterday, few hours later, same yesterday, Friday, 4th of July at around 2pm on Oba Akran road, a police officer attached to Wema Bank, Oba Akran branch shot an ‘innocent’ conductor and another chaos ensued.
Immediately his colleagues at his motor park heard about the incident, they stormed Wema Bank premises, destroyed part of the building and all the windscreens of cars parked in the premises, which mostly belonged to the bank officials and few customers.
The property destroyed are said to be millions of naira. Meanwhile source who also works around Oba Akran, who saw it all, has this to say…read it after the cut, and see photos too. I wonder when ‘lazy’ men in uniforms will learn to stop being power drunk.

I happened to witness this gory event today just in front of my office. It happened at Oba Akran Avenue Ikeja precisely at Bank bus stop. A truck broke down on the road causing heavy traffic along Oba Akran Avenue so it was hell getting through.
Danfos in their usual style were trying to find an escape route out of the heavy grid lock but one of them was so unlucky when he passed in front of Wema Bank as one trigger happy policeman shot at the conductor and immediately fled the scene.

Passers-by had to rally round for support to help the conductor who was lying helplessly in a pool of his own blood before he was taken to LASUTH don't know his present condition it happened around 2:00 pm.

Nairaland / General / My Son Lied Against Pastor Fireman" - Mother Of Virgin Killer Speaks by patpena: 8:52am On Jan 10, 2014
According to the mother of an 18-Year old who killed a 12-year old virgin girl and accused Pastor Sign Fireman of sending him to do that, has said her son is possessed and does not know what he is doing. According to them mother, it started 2years ago when a neighbour laid a curse on him, boasting that he will make him useless. I and his father have gone to beg the man after Ikechukwu started misbehaving, but nothing changed, she said. Whenever he sees young girls, he grabs them and attempt to rape them until the girl screams and Ikechukwu will regain consciousness. He has never met our GO, Pastor Sign Fireman. He lied against him. Below is what she told news men yesterday.

“He started two years ago to molest girls in attempt to rape them. It is not an ordinary thing. You know some people are very good in hurting other people’s children. So for that reason I am suspecting that. He has been staying with me from birth and just two years ago when he was 16 years old, a man who lives close to us laid a curse on him.

“What happened was that we have a well in our compound and Ikechukwu and one of the man’s daughters were at the well fetching water and they had a quarrel. Ikechuwu beat up the girl and when the man returned he brought out a belt to whip Ike and I prevented him. He started boasting that he was going to make Ike useless and miserable. I thought he was joking but after that Ikechuwu started behaving funny.
“Whenever he goes out during the day and sees a little girl he would grip and attempt to rape her and the girl would scream alerting people around, who would arrest and beat him up before handing him over to the police at Badagry Police Station.

About him been arrested four times for attempted rape

“On lucky days, he would escape and flee the area. He has been arrested four times over the same offence and I am the one who normally goes to bail him.

“In April last year, he made me lose over N25,000 I paid as WAEC exam fee. On the day he was supposed to start the exam, he left home with his school uniform and didn’t return until after two weeks. When he came back he told me that the demon came over him on his way to school and he gripped a girl and when the girl screamed he managed to escape so he decided to run away from home.
“I and the father went to beg the people whose child he molested and I decided to follow him to school through out his NECO examinations.
“The last one before this occurred on December 10, 2013 at Imeke. He was arrested and charged to court and remanded in Badagry Prison. I got a lawyer who stood for him before he was granted bail.
“While these things were happening, I told our branch pastor at Badagry about it but I didn’t tell our GO.
“Whenever he sees a little girl he would grip the girl and when she screams he would return to him self. He does not do it at night, it’s always during the day time.

“On this particular case, he told me that he was going to work at a place where a building was demolished by government opposite the French Village in Badagry. They are actually constructing a factory at that place and he used to help them carry bags of cement for which they paid him some stipends at the end of the day.
“He failed to return home that day and I and his father went out to look for him at his place of work and people around told us that they didn’t see him. The next day we didn’t see him, so by Wednesday, we decided to go to the police station at Badagry.
“A police woman we met told us that we should go to the SCID to look for him. I asked her what was his offence and she refused to tell me, rather she said when I got to the SCID that I would know what was my son’s offence.

“The next day I and my husband went to the SCID and when I saw my son he told me that there was a woman who sells food close to where he used to work and the woman had a daughter.
“He said on that day he was eating at the woman’s shop when he saw the girl passing and all of a sudden something came over him and he stood up and followed the girl and gripped her so tight and the girl screamed and died after which he regained consciousness.

“He attempted to run, but someone at a building close by who saw all what happened apprehended him. He used to tell me that he was not misbehaving consciously but that something used to come over him and I have told our branch pastor about it and he prayed for him.

Nairaland / General / 2015: Africa’s Richest Woman, Alakija’s Posters Flood Alausa by patpena: 8:01pm On Jan 09, 2014
Mrs. Folorunsho Alakija, the richest African woman is eyeing the Governorship seat of Lagos State, western Nigeria to replace Governor Babatunde Fashola in 2015.

Posters of Alakija are already on the streets. The posters have equally flooded the Lagos State Government Secretariat, Alausa inviting people to support her ambition for the governorship seat.

The caption on the posters read: “2015: Vote Folorunsho Alakija for Governor.” The posters did not specify the party Alakija will be contesting.

It could also not be ascertained if the posters emanated from her as efforts to get her to comment on issue proved abortive at press time.
•Alakija's campaign posters

•Alakija’s campaign posters

Calls made to her phone was picked by a white man who said she was in a meeting and that she would call back after the meeting, but she never did.

Alakija is seen by many as a woman of impeccable character and one that could provide the needed leadership to move Lagos forward, but with the dominant All Progressives Congress, APC, in power in Lagos, it is doubtful if she can achieve her aspiration outside the party.

In 2013, Forbes named Alakija as the richest black woman on earth as she defeated the television show-host and actress, Oprah Winfrey. By November, 2013, Forbes put her net worth at $2.5 billion. But by January 2014 her net worth had skyrocketed to $7.3 billion courtesy Mail of UK, beating Oprah Winfrey whose net worth is now $2.9 billion to the second place.

She worked as a secretary in a Nigerian Merchant bank in the 1970s and later left to study fashion design in England. She subsequently founded Supreme Stitches, a Nigerian fashion label that catered for upscale clientele, including the late Maryam Babangida, wife of Nigeria’s former military Head of State, General Ibrahim Babangida.

It was during the reign of Babangida that her company Famfa Oil got an oil prospecting license which went on to become OML 127, one of Nigeria’s most prolific oil blocks. Famfa Oil owned a 60% stake in the block until 2000, when then President Olusegun Obasanjo acquired a 50% interest in the block. Famfa Oil went to court to challenge the acquisition, and the Nigerian Supreme Court reinstated the 50% stake to Famfa Oil in May 2012.

Her 60 per cent stake in the block is currently valued at around $7.3 billion, Ventures Africa reported.

Alakija was born on 15 July, 1951. She originates from a large family: her dad had eight wives and 52 children in his lifetime and she was the second surviving child, her mom was the first wife.

She and her younger sister were sent to school abroad when she was seven years old. They went to a school in Wales, a private school for girls in Northern Wales, and they were the only coloured (black) girls in the school. And because their fellow mates couldn’t pronounce their names, they coined them names-Flo for Folorunsho and Doyle for Doyin. They were in the school for four years, and at age 11 she and Doyle moved back to Nigeria at the request of their parents who didn’t want them to lose their African values, culture and tradition.

Alakija got married in 1976 to her loving husband and between them they have four kids, all boys. All of them schooled abroad and are all engaged one way or the other in the family business.

Folorunsho’s mom used to be a fabric merchant and she used to help out, and through that she learnt a lot. After leaving the corporate world in the early 80s (1984), she went to the UK to study fashion designing.

Nairaland / General / South African Pastor Makes Members Eat Grass, Steps On Them by patpena: 12:47pm On Jan 09, 2014
Pastor Daniel Lesego of Rabboni Centre Ministries situated at zone 2 Ga-Rankuwa, north of Pretoria, made his members eat grass and stepped on them while making illustration that the spirit of God can lead people to eat anything.
Scroll down for pictures..
According to the pastor: “There were many disciples and you don’t know others. Let God show you as they were deliberately not revealed in the Bible because God wanted someone to do them, new things. Nathanael was a disciple yet there is no book of Nathanael. What about the miracles, signs and wonders? What about how them who were not mentioned, taught. We know about Peter and the rest and it will take God ‘s power to reveal the Christ in Bartholomew, Thomas called Didymus, Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee and two other of his disciples. Let the stripe open and God show you and you will begin to do them also. The sons of Zebedee and two others, do you know them, they were there and they were participating in the body of Christ.”
“The world cannot see or hear and some behave like the world and they criticize Bartholomew because they cannot see him. What have you eaten? The body and the blood and he lives in me, constantly he is in me, and he lives in me.”
“Come and eat so that your eyes may see. Simon Peter said: I am going fishing, this is wrong. He went back to the earthly position where Jesus found him. These are the types of miracles that will cause many to repent because this is the message through miracles, signs and wonders. Jesus did not come in a friendly manner because they were doing what Jesus did not tell them to do.”
“Paul says: I carry the death of Christ in me because he ate the body.”

Nairaland / General / How Prophets From The Chosen Church Embarrassed Themselves After Boasting by patpena: 12:16pm On Jan 09, 2014
We don’t tell God what to do. He does what He wants to, and what pleases Him at the right time. Some prophets from The Chosen Church in Imo State have embarrassed themselves after claiming they could raise a man who died a month ago in Burkina Faso, and was brought to his home town, Imo State for burial. The prophets told the community leaders that they want permission to exhume his corpse so that the miracle could happen. The elders warned them and even said they shouldn’t worry to raise him. They refused and insisted it was not the right time for him to have died.

His aunt, a member of The Chosen Church also joined in begging the elders and insisted they should let them perform the miracle. The elders accepted on one condition that the police will be involved, and if they fail to raise him, they will be arrested because it is a taboo in their land. The D-day came, and hour after hour, nothing happened till 6pm of that day, after they said the man will rise at exactly 12 noon. My people, when the police men couldn't bear it any more, they had to arrest them and took them to their station, and the people of Imo are patiently waiting for the outcome. Continue after the cut...

Here is how Victoria Ohaeri narrated it on her blog;

A young man, from Umuezii community died in Burkina Faso in November last year under mysterious circumstances. A month after, his sealed body was brought back to Nigeria and was buried the same day in his family compound in Umuezii, Nguru Mbaise, Imo State.

Trouble started when prophets and seers of the Chosen Church of God prophesied that the dead-and-buried young man was still alive (six feet beneath the earth) as his soul has persistently approached them via telephone calls and other spiritual means, requesting immediate exhumation. His elder sister, who is a member of the Chosen Church, communicated this prophecy to the entire family, leading to a family resolution insisting on the “divinely ordered” exhumation.

The decision to exhume the dead body did not go down well with the community as such act was considered an abomination both under the native tradition and under the prevailing Catholic norms deeply established within the community. All entreaties to the family made by the traditional ruler and parish priest of the St. Luke Catholic Church, Umuezii to refrain from such religious charade fell on deaf ears. It got to a point that the deceased family representatives openly accused the church and community leaders of killing their late brother, and preventing his “god-ordained” resurrection.

As a lasting solution to the impasse, the traditional ruler of the community invited the Chosen Church seers and prophets to sign an agreement of performance failing which they will be handed over to the police authorities for prosecution. The second condition was that the miracle will be performed in full public glare and in the presence of other independent witnesses. Proudly beating their chests and boasting deafeningly about their “majestic powers”, the seers and prophets signed the agreement and a date was mutually agreed for the resurrection miracle.

On the appointed day, a horde of prayer warriors, choristers, singers, speaking-in-tongue experts, seers, prophets and the like stormed the village as early as 6 a.m. The traditional ruler also invited the police, radio commentators, reporters and correspondents from local newspapers and the state-owned Imo Broadcasting Corporation. Chosen Church of God seers boastfully started with an early morning prophecy that the dead young man will “resurrect” by 12 noon prompt. The digging up of the grave followed immediately until the body was exhumed.

Then the singing, violent shaking, screaming, cursing, loud yelling and other theatrical displays in the name of deliverance prayers ensued while the large crowd of keen onlookers watched with deep interest. From 6.a.m till 12 noon, there was no sign that the young man was preparing to wake let alone resurrect. Seeing that the 12 noon deadline had passed, the seers quickly issued another prophecy shifting the hour of resurrection to 3.p.m. By this time, the prayer and singing sessions became even more intense and violent. 3 p.m came and went. No sign of life. The Chosen Church prophets again, quickly handed down another prophecy declaring 6.p.m as the divine resurrection hour. 6.p.m also went by, and the dead man remained still, lifeless and unresurrected till this day!

Understandably impatient and angry after the 6p.m deadline, the policemen on standby arrested all the prophets, dancers, singers, clappers and everybody that accompanied them to the community. But before then, the Chosen Church prophets had forwarded messages to their head office requesting for spiritual reinforcement. Undeterred by the arrest of their team members, an additional team that arrived around 6 p.m continued with the prayer sessions even more aggressively and vociferously. They prayed and sang all through the night till the following morning. Still, no sign of resurrection! The police officers, who had then totally run out of patience, arrested the remaining Chosen Church members, and everyone connected to the resurrection miracle including the deceased’s family representatives.

Some of the arrested Chosen Church members are currently on bail, while a lot more are still in custody till date. The dead body was deposited at the morgue at the Federal Medical Center, Owerri, as exhibit, pending further police investigations and prosecution of the false prophets.

I was present at the New Year church service held at St Lukes Catholic Church, Umuezii, Mbaise where the parish priest’s sermon harped on the infiltration of false prophets into the Christendom, warning parishioners to be wary of them. He then invited the members of the deceased family to tender an unreserved apology to the community for the abominable acts they committed. (PICTURED ABOVE) The deceased’s elder sister tendered what seemed like a half-hearted apology on the family’s behalf.

What happened in Imo State is reminiscent of the stories that feature on Nkan ‘Nbe, a popular Yoruba TV Program that features latter-day mystical occurrences. The Imo incident provides a compelling and cogent rationale for the effective regulation of the nefarious activities of churches whose stock in trade is to constitute public nuisance and to deceive and hypnotize the gullible. As a direct result of this incident, some Mbaise communities have proscribed the activities of Pentecostal churches in their localities.

All eyes are on the Imo State Police Command to see how they would handle this issue, and ensure that measures are put in place to deter future sinister activities perpetrated under the banner of religion.
Nairaland / General / Friend Says Naomi Oni Asked Her To Pour Her Acid To Achieve Fame & Fortune by patpena: 12:08pm On Jan 09, 2014
It is a bit confusing now. Ms Oni’s friend, Mary Konye has admitted that she poured acid on her, but said Oni asked her to, so she could get famous like Katy Piper. She has also been receiving money to be on Tv programmes. The court questioned her on why she turned to the media shortly after her attack and why her aunt has been talking to the media too. Oni simply replied and said, it was because she was homeless. Below is how dailymail is reporting it.

A Victoria's Secret lingerie store worker was today forced to deny throwing acid in her own face to gain fame and fortune.

Naomi Oni, 21, was accused of setting up the attack and asking friend Mary Konye, also 21, to 'play the stalker' and throw the corrosive liquid over her.

Miss Oni vehemently denied the claims made by Konye's QC, on the third day of a trial at Snaresbrook Crown Court.

The prosecution claim Konye donned a full niqab before following Oni as she made her way home from Westfield Stratford City in east London where she worked.

The victim was left disfigured for life after Konye allegedly doused her with sulphuric acid near her home in Dagenham, Essex.

But the defence it was part of an elaborate plan to become rich and famous.

Today Miss Oni insisted she was not 'obsessed' with plastic surgery or the story of fellow acid attack victim Katy Piper, despite an internet search history on her laptop suggesting otherwise.

In cross examination Sally O'Neill asked her to explain to jurors the story of Ms Piper before asking whether she had become obsessed by the disfigured model.

Miss Oni said: 'I wouldn't say obsessed but it deeply moved me. I read about other attacks but it was not an obsession.'

Ms O'Neill said it was the defence case that she hatched a plan with Konye to pour acid over herself to improve her future prospects.

She said: 'You said if something similar to that of Katy Piper happened to you then that wouldn't be the end of the world because Katy Piper probably had a career boost.'

Miss Oni simply replied: 'No.'

The defence barrister asked her why she had visited a series of plastic surgery websites.
Miss Oni answered: 'I do not think I was very pretty at all.

'I went on the sites for no reason in particular - I had body issues and I was interested in plastic surgery for my body but there was no particular reason.

'I remember searching for my eyelids because I had double eyelids which I didn't like so I planned one day to see if I could do something about it.'

But Ms O'Neill said: 'You formalised a plan in which you would become the victim of a random acid attack in the hope that you would receive the same type of fame and fortune as Katy Piper had.

'You were of the view that Katy Piper still looked lovely after the attack but that you would need something else to support the attack because the police wouldn't believe you and that was where you brought Mary Konye into it.

'Your play was, I suggest, that you would make an allegation that you had been followed and attacked and you wanted Mary Konye to be part of that - you wanted her to follow you and also, initially, wanted her to throw the acid.

'She absolutely refused to do that and you said that you were actually going to throw the acid yourself towards your neck area.'

Miss Oni replied: 'That is very untrue.'

Miss Oni admitted deleting her internet search history on her mobile phone a day before police were due to come and collect it.

She said she felt 'violated' and didn't want the police going through her personal data so she decided to delete the history on her iPhone.

Miss Oni also denied throwing acid over her face in a bid to catapult herself into the 'celebrity' world.

While in hospital at the end of January 2013, Miss Oni's aunt approached the London Evening Standard with an email about her niece's plight.

Ms O'Neill suggested going to the media was the way Miss Oni had decided to launch herself into the celebrity sphere.

She said: 'It is right that your family decided to take matters into their own hands and go to the media?'
Ms Oni replied: 'We went to the press because I was homeless at the time.

Ms O'Neill then said: 'You thought celebrity would come of it, didn't you? Were you offered the services of a celebrity plastic surgeon from America?'

Ms Oni replied: 'So I was told. I do not think being disfigured and being famous is something I aim for in life at all.'

Ms Oni also admitted being paid £2,000 by The Sun newspaper for an interview as well as appearing on ITVs This Morning programme and being paid a sum of £1,000.
She also appeared on a German television programme and paid around £1200 as well as being approached by the BBC for her story.

Mary Konye, 21, admits disguising herself in a niqab and stalking Naomi Oni, also 21, on her way home from work, but denies she doused her in sulphuric acid.

Describing how she felt after the attack, she said: ‘Am I a bad person? Why has this happened to me? I work hard ... No one’s going to marry me now.’

Miss Oni also revealed that when she told her alleged attacker what had happened, her friend texted back: ‘OMG. Can’t believe it.’

She also cried down the phone to Konye, who offered her support, Snaresbrook Crown Court heard.

She said: ‘I just had my bandages removed and it was the first time I saw my face after surgery and I broke down and I had spoken to Mary that night and I was crying on the phone to her and she was on the phone to me telling me, “don’t worry, you’ll be OK”.’

The case continues.
