----For looking Nigerians in the face, and telling them that no corps member died in the post presidential election violence that wracked some states in the country, Brig Gen Maharazu Tsiga, the Director General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), should hand in his resignation letter.

It is not clear if the general was lying on April 26, when he said: “To the best of my knowledge, no corps member has been reported killed”, or if he genuinely did not have the information then. However, both sins are grave enough. He clearly has shown that he is not capable of managing such a sensitive position.

Gen Tsiga’s statement was not only insensitive to the trauma that surviving corps members in the crisis areas, and their families, had gone through; it also served to subtly encourage the sponsors of the violence. Being that he is a soldier, this seeming act of cowardice to confront the facts and deal decisively with it makes it worse.

About nine corps members have been confirmed dead in the post elections crisis, according to the Federal Ministry of Youth Development. This statement, therefore, justifies various media reports. The ministry says it will immortalise the nine dead corps members and compensate their families.

“The ministry is also scheduling a security review meeting with all relevant security agencies on a new proactive and preventive strategy to secure corps members in their respective states of posting,” said Akinlabi Olasunkanmi, the Minister of Youth Development. “It is also in contact with the Federal Ministry of Justice for the urgent finalisation of a bill to review the enabling law of the NYSC to address noticeable challenges in the operation of the scheme.”

It is therefore unpardonable that Gen Tsiga, who should have been the first person to officially state how many corps members entrusted to his care died, shied away from this duty. It is also the height of dereliction of duties that the general has not, till date, been able to release comprehensive figures of how many corps members were wounded. These corps members elected to serve their nation; they do not deserve such incompetent handling of their welfare.

And then, there is the matter of the missing. Vivian Achumba just resurfaced in her home state, Anambra, after having been missing since the mayhem started in Bauchi State, where she is serving. As one of the ad-hoc workers engaged for election duties, she fled when rampaging urchins attacked her polling unit after results indicated president Goodluck Jonathan was leading. She spent three days in the bush, running for her life.

“On April 17, being Sunday, we received threats also that corps members, especially Christians, would be killed,” she told a national daily. “When the presidential results were being released and Jonathan was winning in 21 states, they started threatening us again. Later, they started burning houses and killing corps members. When trouble got to our arena, in Shira Local Government Area, we started running. They killed some of our colleagues. They cut them into pieces.”

She is lucky. There are others that have remained missing since then. There may be more young graduates stranded in bushes and scared. Some may die from starvation, some may be caught by the savages, others may return home safely. We need to know how many are missing, and the necessary rescue efforts, if any, that have been initiated by the NYSC. ---

According to the Commissioner, rioters raided a building housing about fifty-one youth corpers, killing four and wounding several others. Estimated figures are much higher with at least twenty-five corpers presumed dead in each of the Northern states where violence has erupted.

Perhaps more disturbing than these killings is the lack of a swift, coordinated reaction by the authorities.
