The time is now. Why do you sit still, Akanke? Why is your palm still holding up your cheeks? Do you not hear the sound of drum and celebration? They draw closer every second. Your bags are packed, Why do you linger still? Many years we have waited, The beautiful flower of our garden, Long we have nurtured, Watching as you bloom into the prettiest of your peers, The gongs speak of your chastity, Tongues waggle of your comeliness, Princes speak of your nature, Oh the rarest of rubies praise you, Stand up my child. It is time. Cheer up, Akanke, it is for joy, Your mother is moody, Your father is honoured, Your bed lies not here again, With Adele your heart lies, Stand up, stand up, The elders wait at the door, Maids dance at the square, Your beloved pace waiting, The sun has come to watch, The time has come. Hold my hand Akanke, Your attire fits you well, Your beads suit your neck, The mirror glows happily, Your skin is toned to the butter, Look at your headgear, The mountains can't be seen, Its is deserving, Watch your steps, The child of Abike, Your day has come, The time is now. #Altarboy |

Village menace (7th episode) I instantly felt my hands go numb like blood stopped flowing through my veins, and I thought my heart stopped beating. My mouth failed my heart's desire to scream loudly as no audible sound came out, and it hung loose as if trying to suck air in. My eyes opened widely, and my feet unconsciously staggered backwards in fear. The very beast that had once been a terror in my imagination stood boldly in my presence, its third eye which stood on its nose bridge rotating in its sockets scrutinizingly. He growled loudly again, slapping its many arms against its scaly chest. The birds hooting playfully in the trees scampered out into the outer space for safety, the leaves of the forest trees hurriedly fell off the trees in fear, and I thought I saw a monkey flying in the air. The presence of this deafening terror sent all hopes of escape out of my little brain. My cockroach has finally decided to escort the hen to the village meeting. Without thinking, I felt a surge of strength to my legs and I decided to make a break for it. I ran as much as my tiny legs will carry me, jumping into the air to increase my pace. As I ran blindly, clearing the bush out of the way, I looked up to see the creature standing right in front with hands folded together. I tried turning back again, and there he was. Only then did I realize I was caged, a trapped rat with no where to run. He leapt towards me, the ground vibrated and trembled in fear like an harsh tornado. My legs buckled and I fell to the ground, knocked my head against a stone and I knew no more. How long I lay, I knew not. I felt cold breeze sweep over my head and I opened my eyes slowly to see several fierce-looking eyes staring at me. At that moment, I almost wished to be eaten up by the ground beneath. I screamed loudly, calling on my mother as much as my voice will allow, but even then I knew no help was forthcoming. I saw a thick scaly calabash-like hand wave over me and I suddenly went dumb. With one deft stroke, I was lifted into the air and we went on a journey into the heart of the forest. As we went, strange sounds trailed our steps. Sorrowful tones that seemed to come from inside the forest trees. The wild animals we read about in school were nothing compared to those residing in the forest. The sight of tortoise walking on two feet, birds with brown teeth, or the rat talking with other rats just beside the path. Despair and sorrow clogged my head, and the thought of dying, far away from my family sent shockwaves to my spine. My bladder was almost set loose when I saw a long snake with two heads entwined with a tree. From the distance, I saw similar creatures with several arms, jumping up and down merrily and screaming. Now there was no hope of survival. The grim reaper has decided to take its due. Uncontrollably, tears started flowing, regretting I ever stepped out of my house that morning. It was evening when we finally arrived at their abode, made out of tree trunks and leaves. The shouts and screams stopped immediately and I was taken to their leader, who appeared to be the largest in the group. I was placed in front of him, my legs trembling as I knelt down. He looked down at me with a mean look, and cleared his throat, "We are not going to kill you." |
For that sweet lady... Beat around breathing fire, its heat is strong but hits not my lair. Tales of a love so strong beats bad on me, my hair on ends in fear of hurt, my heart beats hard and I lose my breath. This goddess is not a fire, not a tale and not a devil, she's just that wicked angel holding my heart captive. Now that she's here, what to do? Shall we take the love to the rain, the moon our lightman, the stars our cupid, and let the cold breeze join our celebration. We'll dance slowly, jump joyfully as it playfully strikes our careless skin, then inside we'll go in shivers to cuddle, chasing the hating cold away. Together we'll laugh all night, till the sweet love drifts us away into the unknown. Shall we go out in the morning, when the sun comes up to watch the lovely duo, holding hands as your beautiful skin glows perfectly. The sun will hit you not, for I'll be the shadow which covers you, and the little sweat I'll mop off your beautiful face. Look at me, watch as I glow, the light in my eyes. Its you, yes, the fire which lightens me up, the true tale which makes me laugh, and the breathtaking sweetness in my heart. The wind of change may beat us hard, and the tides may hit us bad, but we'll never be sad. Like a river our love will flow without looking back. Put your head on my laps as I sing my love song into your ears and pat your hair lovingly. Enjoy, sleep on, we will meet, the lady of my life. #Altarboy P.S. Stuff like this makes me wish I had, you know what! |
A poem for proposal Moment after moments, time over time, I close my eyes silently, expecting the nothingness of darkness, but instead, an image forms straight in my head. A beautiful creature beclouds my sight as the fog on an early day. I keep my eyes closed for the image is not one I wish to fade. It is as the sweet meat which takes every space in my mouth as I chew on deliciously. The sweet sensation of cold water on the mind on a sunny day. Moment after moment, I wish this fantasy of mine will hit reality when I open my eyes. Beholding you keeps my heart beating hard, its solemn rhythm goes discordant at your voice. Of course, it seems involuntary, but your beauty is that which gets my mind racing. I slowly recede into loneliness, hoping for the day you ll show my heart mercy and liven its undesirable boredom. Every second, time ticks on tick tock, my ultimate wish is to be your sunlight, to lighten your path. I'd liken your character to the moon, illuminated by the sunlight. Have you seen a good sailor, his suit all white, steering the ship rightly and ne'er to sink, so shall my love for you be. Let me be the pillow which supports your head in the night, and the golden jacket which protects your body even on a cold winter day. Not only are you the beautiful flower on the fruitful golden plant. You are also the root which nurtures life to multiply. Around you, I feel the confidence of rowing against the wind and winning life battles. I wish you'd come to me and let me treat you as the golden queen of my heart, the priceless gold in my treasure box. You are as the oasis, giving life to the desert riders, oh how I wish to stay by you always. Blessed is the day I came to know you. Don't make me wait till eternity. Let's together unite our hearts and bless the world with the goodness of love. #Altarboy ©penplayer.com c.c. mhyra |

My qualities: your best choice of a boyfriend! In the past months, I've gone through some serious hustles in search of a befitting girlfriend and I have been let down brutally at all ends, seeing as none of them wants me. In lieu of this, I have decided, according to my recent personal development resolutions, to change my ways and imbibe qualities, good and desirable qualities suited for proper 'boyfriendship'. In all ramifications I have tried, to make sure every lady likes me at first sight, and immediately opt to be my one and only sweetheart. To save you the trouble of discovering my special qualities yourself, I have decided to have a few of them compiled in this special press release, to tell you and the world at large, how lucky you would be, dating a guy like me. 1. I rear goats, and not just ordinary goats, the very stubborn, I mean obstinate, long-goatee ones and none is dead (at least not yet). If you've witnessed a demonstration from a goat, you ll quickly realize how much of a gentle and agile man I am. If I can successfully rear 5 goats, feeding and chasing them, and all of them are still alive, then keeping and taking care of you as my girlfriend won't be a problem, as long as you understand there's always a stick in the corner to keep you in check. Have you tried a romantic love race before? Relax, I've practiced enough with my goats, and since I know how dependent girlfriends can be, my skills in animal husbandry would come in really handy. 2. I wear leather slippers, not timberland, timberlake, or timberriver shoes. Over my year of constant rejection, I discovered the importance of shoes in the life of a relationship. For a guy wearing too much of those shoes, the health of the relationship is always at risk because of their heaviness and bulkiness, which could cause cramps and misfits. Imagine, if we were taking a walk, the sound of those shoes could be detrimental to the love flow between us, cutting and blocking love currents and could cause unnecessary fight, especially if I couldn't hear your silent whisper of 'I love you'. To solve that, I've opted for leather slippers which will make absolutely no sound and allows me to walk freely with you on the sweet streets of love. 3. I don't keep sideburns. I know you must have checked my display picture now, (after seeing my prowess and commitment to personal development) and seen that I am clean-shaven. Now, I don't know what it is with sideburns, teddy or whatever slang you have for it, but it is not just a coincidence that the love actors of Hollywood, Bollywood, and even Nollywood all keep sideburns. To save you from the unnecessary jealousy and fights that come with sideburn guys, I have decided to be remain clean-shaven. Think of how romantic it would be to touch my cheeks and know no hair will disturb your hand's escapade. 4. I listen to love songs. If you haven't heard, a recent survey showed guys who listen to love songs are more romantic and have better love lives (even if I don't know where I saw it). I became a big fan of those romantic guys, from westlife, to other love artistes, quietly closing my eyes and drifting off into love wonderland as I listen on. Consider how sweet it would be, calling you and singing beautifully with my husky voice, 'I lay my love on you', and witness how magically it would greatly increase our amorous feelings for each other. 5. I'm still a guy. If you have seen the rate at which guys cross over the bridge, you will appreciate how much of a man I am to remain a man. Now unless you have natural aberrations, or you wanna risk a 10-14 year jail term, you will consider dating me, a man. How good would it be to rest on my well-toned muscular arms, stare longingly at my six packs and call me, 'my man'. 6. I shy away from a celebrity lifestyle. Yes, I know I'm a celeb (especially after conquering attacking soldiers who dared attack me in the form of ants), but I've decided to keep it low because of the nefarious fate awaiting a celebrity daring to venture into a relationship. Since I am prepared to adore you, I'm not willing to entertain chances of assault and breakup simply because I didn't keep my unprecedented conquest and fame in the dark. I could go on and on, but I'd be much of a talkative and it could piss you off -- my potential girlfriend. Be smart! Be wise. Go for the best choice! Me! #Altarboy |
My confession That text you received back then, left you wondering who it was. I guess I was the coward, too chickenhearted to tell you how I felt, now I see, that if another day passes without a word, I'll break down in heartache, so I'm gonna come out this time just to say I love you. I'm in love, and its draining me slowly, so I'm gonna kill the butterflies in my stomach to tell you straight. I want you to be mine. I know I don't deserve it, but its always a race in my heart each time I see you. No more denying, I'm unlocking the pads of my mind to burst out and say I love you. I stood up all night, thinking on which words to string together to express the little secret I've kept all this while. Now that we're here, it matters no more, for I'm gonna put the devil behind me, and tell you that I love you. It seems this chicken finally gets tough, to venture into the fox's den. Turn me down now, I don't care, but this heaviness must go off. Its hard, I know, but I wanna feel your sun shine over, I wanna hear you smile, and I'm not gonna give up this time. I wanna get lost in the cavern of romance. The rain may beat me blue and the sun may scorch me black, but I ain't gonna run for cover till I tell you how I feel. I'm not telling you why, for though my head fools me, my heart cannot so I'm gonna say it one more time, that even if you've got another in your heart, my words for you will never change. I love you. #Altarboy |
Village Menace (6th episode) We were at first taken aback by the sight of him struggling with a lifeless statue. The statue itself showed no sign of yielding, as it looked on indifferently with a rather straight face, the sight of a giant being pulled by an ant. I disobeyed my second instinct and held back a delirious laughter, and quickly we rushed to pull him away from the statue's unyielding grip. Holding on tightly to 'widenose', we pulled him with all the strength we could summon, all to no avail. Amidst grunts and struggles, we started hearing strange voices from afar, the sound of strange chants. I rushed out quickly, and the sight sent water to my trousers, my heart changing its beats to that of the traditional talking drum. Acolytes of the priest, all clad in red wrappers, carried calabashes and matched towards the shrine in uniform steps, all chanting sorrowful songs. The priest himself stood in the front leading the procession, dressed in a black overalls and had white markings over his face. We have finally kissed trouble in the face. The consequence of desecrating the shrine by non-worshippers was to become dinner meats for the gods; meaning our heads will be used to abate the god's anger. I stood transfixed for a while before regaining my composure. I grabbed a big stick just outside the shrine and rushed back in. After trying severally to pull him off, our strengths gradually wavered. The chants get clearer by the moment, and the sound of matching footsteps get bolder, eating into the distance with each second. Without a second thought, I smashed the stick into the statue's mouth and off his hand came. Without further delay, we took an instant relay race, running desperately out of the shrine like thieves that had just stolen from the marketplace, our heels almost touching our heads as we ran. The sight of a deer running from the lion himself. I scampered into the forest without looking back. After several minutes of running, clearing stubbles and the bush out of my way, I looked back to discover none of my friends was running behind me, and I quickly took a stop. At first, I thought they were actually playing a prank on me, but after calling out as much as my voice will allow and got no reply, I gave up and started walking back. The road I followed suddenly divided into two parts, and I had no idea of which one to turn to. Confusion and despair settled confidently on my face, standing in the middle of a thick forest with none of my comrades. After several deliberation, hand gestures and chants of 'sokini, sokini...', I turned to the pathway that seemed clearer and wider. After a short distance, I started hearing strange eerie tones, and with no bird in sight, I felt a jolt in my heart. The sound became incessant and seemed to be coming from a particular direction. My legs received the memo and started running, but instead of getting fainter, the sound only got clearer. Out of curiosity, I searched through the bush to see a cat looking at me innocently. I laughed in derision, to think I was actually being chased by a cat. As I turned back to continue on my journey, I heard a loud growl just behind me and I turned back to see a three-eyed, four-armed and one-legged creature staring at me. |

Letter to a lady I promised to love forever... Regret is not a good thing, I know. Crying over spilt milk is not desirable, I know. Oppourtunities come but once, I know that too, but another thing I know is that fate sometimes blesses men with second chances. If I could turn the hands of time, Sailing back to days of old, The times you had me on your mind, And treated me like rare gold, I wish I treated you better. If winds can change the tide, And if the earth can turn its course, I'd go back and make amends. If I knew you'd stop loving me, I'd have gone all the way to make you stay. Surely the time may be blissful, The light may shine brightly, My heart's dullness covers it all. If you are not lost in another's embrace, And if the love you once had isn't dead, I ll gladly accept you back, Fulfilling all the promises I ever made. Though I 've always claimed I could do without you, but what's the use when every time I remember you, sadness fills my thought, and the scarring wound in my heart breaks open. For now mystery you may, but your person is ever vivid in my imagination, This is to tell you, if I could go back, I'd make things right. *smiles* P.S. I don't know what to call this piece, a poetry or a prose, but I'm sure its a drop of my heart wishes. I wrote this the day I remembered you... It's old. |
Village menace (5th episode) Without bothering to ask about the details of my attack, I was quickly rushed into the house like an accident victim, and my wounds were tended to. My mother was visibly shaken, as she scampered up and down to attend to her only son. Bitterness filled my heart and tears dropped from my eyes uncontrollably like a child whose cake was snatched away; the fact that we had been beaten helplessly without being able to defend ourselves at all. A delicious meal of rice was prepared for me, and I ate like a starved chicken, littering the floor with its grains. After the meal, whimpering and limping in pain like a dog with a broken leg, I went sourly into my room to rest my frail body. The following morning, a Saturday, just as the sun was coming up, I set out immediately after breakfast in search of my friends in a bid to discuss how to defend ourselves from future attacks. In minutes, we were converged at our meeting place, all with demeaning and sour looks. After the usual greeting, we settled down on the cold ground to deliberate on the next course of action. After many suggestions, without reaching any logical conclusion, we decided to head for the village shrine and pay the oracle a courtesy visit. Only one path leads to the shrine, on each side lie thick forests, believed to be an habitation of evil creatures possessing four arms, three eyes and one leg. The thought of those creatures gave me goosebumps, and my heart started beating rapidly like the sound of the King's drum, I tried as much as possible to hide my fears, and assured my friends as well. As we walked deep down the path, strange birds started hooting loudly, the gibbons on the forest trees shouting loudly, jumping wildly from tree to tree, and crickets chirped as loud as their voice will allow. Afraid, we took to our heels, and ran down the path like we were being chased by wild dogs, reciting verses we had forcibly learnt in school, "The Lord is my Shepherd... Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death..." When the shrine was visible from the distance, we slowed down, and moved quietly till we got to the entrance. Annoying and foul odours filled the surroundings, the shrine itself was old, its thatched roof was already loosing its strength and sagged over the dilapidating mud hut. Painted on the wall at the entrance were strange-looking images; animals without head, strangely-marked people with horns and without eyes. A mighty boulder stands close to the entrance and beside it was an altar that was stained with blood, probably used for sacrifices. The atmosphere around the shrine held something particularly ominous about it, and silence filled the air as it would on a visit to the dead's abode. Without caution, we charged into the sacred hut, and we looked carefully around like strangers finding themselves in a new territory. Strange items lay on the inner walls of the shrine; small gourds, cowries, calabashes, and the dried skull of animals and people that were used for sacrifices. Multi-coloured rafia mats covered the earthen floor, big clay pots lay on each corner of the room, and curiously we checked its inside to find white horsetails and black-coloured tortoises roaming its inside. We examined every item in the hut till we got to a particular statue. Black to the teeth, it stood rigid on the floor, no hands and legs, its eyes and mouth wide open. The statue had a sort of fierce countenance and a first look at it got us laughing in derision. On its contorted head lay a brown calabash with palm oil leaking from its base. Boldly, I went on to slap the statue's face, and my companions proceeded to do the same, kicking and slapping the back of its head like our teachers do, and laughing. When we got tired, we went out of the hut, happy at the fun and experience. As we were about leaving, 'widenose' turned back, "I need to remove a tooth from that thing's mouth," he said, and went into the hut. Suddenly, we heard a loud fearful cry and then a sound of commotion in the hut, and we all rushed inside to see what happened. Struggling, with a terrified look, and a hand inside the statue's mouth was 'widenose.' |
Idiataqueen:Yea. Thanks. |
