The Nigeria Employers' Consultative Association (NECA) has lauded the Coca-Cola System in Nigeria, comprising Coca-Cola Nigeria Limited and Nigerian Bottling Company (NBC), its authorised bottler, on the commissioning of its state-of-the-art Packaging Waste Collection Hub in Apapa, Lagos.

Speaking during the hub's commissioning on Friday, January 31, 2025, the Director General of Nigeria Employers' Consultative Association (NECA), Adewale Smatt-Oyerinde, described the hub as a groundbreaking investment that will redefine environmental sustainability and create direct and indirect jobs by supporting over 1,000 waste collectors, over 70 green entrepreneurs, and many others.

Smatt-Oyerinde stated that the collection hub, with the capacity to process 13,000 metric tonnes (MT) of plastic bottles annually, is a game changer and a bold statement by the Coca-Cola System as a responsible organisation.

“As the focal voice of business in Nigeria, NECA is proud of this laudable investment by the Coca-Cola System in Nigeria; this initiative is a testament that the Coca-Cola System is not just interested in profit but committed to its environmental stewardship and sustainability. With this initiative, the Coca-Cola System has raised the bar and set a new environmental responsibility benchmark,” he said.

He then called on the government, both at the state and federal levels, to recognise and encourage the company for this laudable initiative, motivating them to do more and inspiring others to consider this kind of investment, which will help to improve the environment and create wealth.

He described the establishment of the Packaging Collection Hub as a clear demonstration of Coca-Cola System’s commitment to driving more investment in Nigeria in line with the $1.5 Billion investment pledge made by the company to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu during a recent visit to him in Abuja by the leadership of the company.

The Coca-Cola System in Nigeria, comprising Coca-Cola Nigeria Limited and its authorized bottler, Nigerian Bottling Company (NBC), today announced the commissioning of a state-of-the-art Packaging Collection Hub located in Apapa, Lagos. The facility, a landmark initiative in Nigeria's plastics recycling infrastructure, has the capacity to process up to 13,000 metric tonnes (MT) of plastic bottles annually.

In addition to supporting the Coca-Cola System’s sustainability initiatives, the hub aims to serve as a comprehensive solution for plastic waste management. It seeks to facilitate PET collection, process materials into clean PET bales, and enable rPET production through third-party partnerships—helping to create cleaner communities and drive collective action to reduce packaging waste. The vision is to scale the model once its success is demonstrated.

The Coca-Cola System’s investment underscores its global goal of reducing packaging waste and emissions through:

Using 35% to 40% recycled material in primary packaging (plastic, glass, and aluminum), including increasing recycled plastic use to 30% to 35% globally.

Ensuring the collection of 70% to 75% of the equivalent number of bottles and cans introduced into the market by 2035.


Over the past decade, the Coca-Cola System has contributed over $1.5 billion to Nigeria's economic value chain, empowering communities, driving economic growth, and advancing sustainability. Recently, the System announced plans to more than double its investment rate over the next five years, committing $1 billion to further these efforts. The newly established Packaging Collection Hub reinforces the Coca-Cola System’s legacy of investment in Nigeria and supports its long-term objectives of expanding the network of recycling centres and producing food-grade recycled PET, thereby reducing dependence on imported virgin materials.

Speaking during the commissioning, the Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who was represented by the Special Adviser on Circular Economy, Mrs. Titilayo Oshodi, described the new facility as a symbol of progress and a tangible demonstration of the kind of corporate social responsibility needed in Lagos.

According to Sanwo-Olu, the Nigerian Bottling Company (NBC) has demonstrated its commitment to doing business beyond profit and playing a broader role in society through this project.

"This hub will serve as a critical centre for collecting, sorting, and recycling PET plastics, which will significantly reduce plastic pollution in our environment," he said.

In her remarks, the Honourable Minister of Trade and Investment, Dr. Jumoke Oduwole, described the launch of the Coca-Cola System’s Packaging Collection Hub as a significant step forward in Nigeria’s collective commitment to sustainability, economic growth, and environmental responsibility.

Oduwole commended the Coca-Cola System for its vision and investment in the project, stating that its commitment to Nigeria's economy, environmental sustainability, and community development aligns with the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s broader vision for a prosperous and self-sustaining nation.

Speaking at the commissioning, Zoran Bogdanovic, Chief Executive Officer of Coca-Cola HBC, known locally as the Nigerian Bottling Company, highlighted the company’s strategic vision:

"This facility represents a significant milestone in our journey to reduce waste by collecting and recycling our packaging in Nigeria. By investing in the hub, we are supporting local communities, creating jobs, and demonstrating our commitment to building a more sustainable future in a country integral to our business success. We are proud to partner with the Nigerian Government in addressing the critical challenge of waste management while fostering economic growth."

The Coca-Cola Company’s Africa Operating Unit President, Luisa Ortega, emphasized, “For nearly 75 years, the Coca-Cola System has been honoured to be part of communities in Nigeria. Through collaboration with local and global partners, the Coca-Cola System will continue to expand its design innovations, explore new collection models or improve existing ones, invest in local infrastructure like this hub, and engage with communities to help create a better shared future.”

Also speaking at the event, the Honourable Minister of State for Industry, Senator John Enoh, described the commissioning of the Packaging Collection Hub as a bold step that would redefine Nigeria's industrial landscape, blending manufacturing with sustainability and ensuring that industry contributes both output and impact.

"Establishing this hub by the Coca-Cola System, comprising Coca-Cola Nigeria Limited and its bottling partner, Nigerian Bottling Company, marks an important moment in our national industrial journey. It demonstrates what happens when industries rise beyond profit and embrace responsibility to the environment while creating jobs and supporting the larger ecosystem that fuels their success," Enoh said.

For over 96 years, the Coca-Cola System has refreshed Africa while driving transformative change across the continent. In Nigeria, the System has been a cornerstone of the economy for nearly 75 years, employing over 2,800 people across eight production plants, 11 depots, and over 58 commercial territories. Beyond its immediate economic contributions, the Coca-Cola System leads sustainability efforts through initiatives in packaging, recycling infrastructure, reduced virgin plastic usage, and consumer engagement campaigns to foster environmental responsibility. Justice Musa Kakaki has fixed April 1, for the hearing of the suit filed by a Nigeria engineer, Alhaji Yekeen Idowu against KLM Royal Dutch, over alleged negligence and lost of properties.

Justice Kakaki fixed the date on Monday, when lawyer to both parties appeared before the cour.

The plaintiff, had dragged the Dutch airline before the court in a suit marked FHC/L/CS/607/2020.

At the resumed hearing of the suit on Thursday, Barrister Enitan Afolabi the announced his appearance for the plaintiff, while Barrister Fidelis OKeke leading Cynthia Adepoju announced their appearance for KLM Royal Dutch Airlines.

Also, Kitoye Pamela akinwale announced her appearance for the defendant.

KLM's counsel told the court that the business of the day was for hearing of defendant's defence to the suit.

However, counsel to the Plaintiff while apologized to court for missing the proceedings on two occasions, vehemently objected to the Counsel's argument stating that the matter ought to start denove since it was partheard by Justice Abimbola Awogboro, who has been transferred to another jurisdiction of the court.

The plaintiff's lawyer therefore asked the court for a new date for the commencement of the matter.

Justice Kakaki after listening to the parties' submissions, held that the matter must commence denovo, he thereafter adjourned that matter to April 1, for hearing.

The plaintiff, Engineer Idowu, in his amended statement of claims filed by his lawyer, Enitan Afolabi, has asked the court for the sum of 700 Euro, N1.2 million and N45, million Naira only) from the airline, being general and special damages.

In urging the court to grant his request, the Engineer stated that on or about July 3, 2018, he embarked on a trip to Frankfurt, Germany on board of Klm Royal Dutch Airlines for valuable consideration and was scheduled to return to Lagos, Nigeria from Stuttgart, Germany on July 14, 2018 via a Reservation Code, MOHSKI and Airline Reservation Code V4P8K4(KL) stating his itinerary.

He further avers that contrary to the agreed route from Stuttgart, Germany to Amsterdam, Netherlands to Lagos, Nigeria, the airline rerouted his flight from Stuttgart, Germany to Paris, France to Casablanca, Morocco to Lagos Nigeria. And that the flight from Stuttgart, Germany to Paris, France was delayed from 7. 00am to 3.00pm for which the airline paid compensation of 600 Euro to him.

He stated that he was belatedly put on Air France flight with promise to drop him in Lagos, Nigeria en-route Casablanca, Morocco. However, he was punishingly flown from Paris, France to Casablanca, Morocco and dropped there where he was left stranded and dangerously to his fate for over 24 hours, which when added to the delay the re-route occasioned on the Plaintiff comes to 48 hours. The 48 hours certainly looked like a couple of weeks. And that he was left to frustration, isolation and deep depression during this period.

He stated that during this period, he could not access his family in Nigeria, his business associates, he could not meet his business appointments with some of the aforementioned companies and left incommunicado with the outside world. And that having been abandoned in Casablanca, Morocco by the defendant he unsuccessfully tried to contact the defendant and/or Air France office at the airport but was prevented from accessing the office at a point where he was required to have a valid transit visa in order to do so.

He stated further that the airline willingly refused, willingly failed to come to the terrible position he had put him. He was harassed by Morocco’s immigration authorities and barely escaped prosecution and imprisonment. All his efforts to find a solution to his travails met with a stone wall and was left dejected, miserable and at the mercy of the unknown.

The engineer further states the following: "that after frantically seeking for solution to his travails and could not get one as the Defendant made himself unavoidably irresponsible he was compelled to take his destiny in his hands as he struggled to book another flight vide Air Morocco to Lagos, Nigeria which cost him 700EU (Seven Hundred Euro). Once inside the aircraft flying him to Nigeria he observed co-passengers avoiding me like plague and some of them covering their noses.

"That on getting to Lagos, Nigeria he wrote to the Defendant vide the Defendant's online platform on 27th July, 2018, 5th August, 2018, 13th August, 2018 and 20th August, 2018 complaining of the willful misconduct of the Defendant and although the Defendant responded to the plaintiff's protest on the online platform by his emaii namely: Claim No 12000078001KL1870/14 Jul 2018, Claim No 12047594 001KL1870/14 Jul 2018, Claim No 1208922 6001AF1496/14 Jul 2018 and Claim No 12126736001AF 1496/14 July 2018, he refused, failed and/or neglected to address his grievances and further refused, failed and/or neglected to proffer solution and/or adequate compensation. The compensation offered by the defendant fell far short of the losses he incurred in consequence of the willful misconduct of the defendant.

"Upon consequence of the willful misconduct of the Defendant and his lackadaisical attitude to his travails, he had no alternative than to consult and retain the services of Afolasade Afolabi, Esq of Enitan Afolabi & Co who wrote the Defendant vide letters dated 21st May, 2019 and 24th June, 2019 and the defendant although replied the aforementioned letters persisted in his willful misconduct to meet the demand of the Plaintiff. The email under which the Defendant reacted to the Plaintiff solicitor’s letter is the email with reference no 13261498001KL1870/14 Jul 2018 and is hereby pleaded.


"The Plaintiff suffered special and general damages in consequence of Defendant's breach of contract and willful misconduct. And that by the time he consulted his solicitors and an action was imminent he was unable to find the flight ticket he used from Casablanca to Lagos, Nigeria and all efforts to find it proved futile but continues to search for It until recently when he gave up the search for it as it was irretrievably lost.


"By reason of the Defendant's Incompetence, deliberate act, act of negligence and willful misconduct the Plaintiff has been put to a lot of financial losses, travel stresses, loss of professional time, criminal imputation etc. and his health has been seriously and adversely affected."

But the airline, KLM Royal Dutch, in it's amended statement of defence filed by it's lawyer, S. E. Elema (SAN), while admitting some of the plaintiff's Statement of Claims, however urged the court to discountenance the plaintiff's claims as they are not supported by the facts of this case or by the applicable laws.

Parts of the airline amended statement of defence reads: " the made the following aveerments: "the Amended Statement of Claim, which says that the flight from Stuttgart to Paris was delayed from 7.00a.m to 3.00pm and states instead that following the cancellation of the Plaintiff's flight KL 1870 which was scheduled to depart Stuttgart at 11a.m (and not 7.00a.m), the Defendant immediately arranged, with re-issued ticket and boarding passes to the Plaintiff, for the Plaintiff to be flown on its sister-airline, Air France's flight AF 1509, being the earliest possible flight out of Stuttgart, to Paris, from where he would connect flight AF 1496 to Casablanca and then Royal Air Maroc flight AT 555 to Lagos. The said flight AF 1509 departed at 3.15pm resulting in a delay of 4 (four) hours, for which the Plaintiff was compensated with the sum of N252,131.00 being the Naira equivalent of 600 Euros in line with EU regulations.

"The Defendant denies the averment contained in paragraph 9 of the Amended Statement of Claim and in response states that the flight AF 1496, which was scheduled to convey the Plaintiff from Paris to Casablanca was also unfortunately delayed by the Air Traffic Controllers in Paris, a situation which was beyond the control of the Defendant and its sister-airline.

"The Defendant states in furtherance of the aveerment contained in paragraph 5 above that it did not fly the Plaintiff to Casablanca as a form of punishment, neither did it abandon him there, rather, it did everything possible within its control to get the Plaintiff to his destination and as soon as possible but for the delay of the Casablanca flight from Paris by the Air Traffic Controllers in Paris, which eventually prevented the Plaintiff from making his connecting flight from Casablanca to Lagos, on board Royal Air Maroc (AT5S5) as the flight had left before his arrival in Casablanca. That being the case, the Plaintiff was expected to approach Air France’s counter or the Royal Air Maroc’s counter in Casablanca for a rescheduling of his flight to Lagos but this, the Plaintiff never did.

"The Defendant denies the aveerment contained in paragraph 11 of the Amended Statement of Claim and states that transit visas are not required to approach Air France's counter at the Casablanca Airport while transiting or making flight connections, provided the passenger is with a valid onward ticket. The Plaintiff, thus, being in possession of his re-issued onward ticket and boarding pass for his connecting flight to Lagos via Royal Air Maroc, ought to have approached either the counter of Air France or Royal Air Maroc for an alternative flight to Lagos without any additional cost.

"The Defendant denies the aveerments contained in paragraphs 12 and 13 of the Amended Statement of Claim and reiterates the fact that the Plaintiff failed to approach the Air France’s counter to have his connecting flight rescheduled or be provided with an alternative flight which would have been done at no extra cost. The Defendant therefore denies responsibility for any additional cost incurred by the Plaintiff on account of any new flight ticket as that was solely his decision.

"The Defendant denies any willful misconduct on its part as alleged in paragraph 14 of the Amended Statement of Claim. The Defendant however admits receiving emails from the Plaintiff, to which it replied vide its response to the request dated 27 July 2018; vide email dated August 13, 2018 to the request dated 5 August 2018; vide email dated August 20, 2018 to the request dated 13 August 2018; and vide email dated August 29, 2018 to the request dated 20 August 2018, offering compensations in line with the EU regulations to the Plaintiff in the sum the N252,131.00 already paid per the attached EFT Payment advice dated 29.08.18 and additional 2 (two) 200Euros worth of travel vouchers numbered 0578256720803 and 0578260225974 respectively.


"The Defendant again denies any willful misconduct on its part as alleged in paragraph 15 of the Amended Statement of Claim but admits receiving letters dated 21" of May, 2019 and 24" of June, 2019 from one Afolasade Afolabi Esq.. to which the Defendant replied, with Reference number 13261498001 KL 1870/14JUL2018, through Ms. M Aguib of Customer Care, informing the said Afolasade Afolabi Esq. about the N252.131.00 compensation already paid to the Plaintiff for the delayed and eventually cancelled flight KL 1870 from Stuttgart to Amsterdam, as well as the additional 400 Euros worth of travel vouchers and the opportunity to explore a refund of his unused Casablanca to Lagos travel coupon through his travel agent which issued his original ticket.


"The Defendant vehemently denies the allegations contained in paragraphs 16-19 of the Amended Statement of Claim with emphasis on the allegations of breach of contract, willful misconduct, incompetence and negligence and as such not liable to the Plaintiff for any special or general damages inclusive of financial loss, loss of professional time, criminal imputation or adverse health condition allegedly suffered by the Plaintiff."

Aare Adetola Emmanuelking Honors the Memory of Rt. Hon. Dr. Adewunmi Oriyomi Onanuga


The Chairman of Adron Group, Aare Adetola Emmanuelking, has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Rt. Hon. In a move reminiscent of elaborate staged performances, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) recently orchestrated a highly publicized "revival" of the Port Harcourt Refinery. Yet, behind the glossy visuals and televised tours, questions persist about the facility's actual operational capacity and the veracity of NNPCL's claims.

The Promises and Reality

In October 2023, NNPCL announced with much fanfare that the Port Harcourt Refinery had resumed operations, claiming it was operating at over 70% capacity. This declaration was celebrated as a breakthrough for Nigeria's oil and gas sector, but scrutiny reveals inconsistencies.

Experts in the energy sector have cast doubt on these claims, pointing to systemic issues that have plagued the refinery for decades. According to sources, no significant construction or modernization of the refinery was undertaken between 1990 and 2020, resulting in the loss of technical expertise and institutional knowledge.

The Staged Production?

Eyewitness accounts suggest that what Nigerians witnessed was not a genuine resumption of production but a staged event. Community members and experts have stated that the refinery's supposed "fuel production" involved releasing old stock, some of which had been stored for over three years, to calibrate new loading equipment. Only six trucks of fuel were loaded during the event, further fueling skepticism.

A local leader from the Alesa community, where the refinery is located, corroborated this narrative, describing the event as a mere dramatization. While the community remains optimistic about the refinery’s potential, they question the disconnect between what was portrayed in the media and the on-ground reality.

Operational Challenges

Even under automation, the refinery’s operations have raised eyebrows. Reports indicate that loading a single truck under the automated system now takes up to six hours—an inefficiency unseen even during the manual loading era. This calls into question the refinery's touted automation capabilities.

Additionally, there is ambiguity regarding the source of feedstock used for production. Industry watchers have asked NNPCL to clarify whether it has operational distillation units or is merely blending imported components like Naphtha.

Nigerians Demand Transparency

Despite the claims, NNPCL has yet to provide tangible proof of large-scale fuel production. The public, who remain eager for an operational refinery that contributes to energy security and economic growth, feel deceived.

"Nigerians deserve the truth," said a sector expert. "Fuels are not like air—they are tangible and measurable. If the refinery is truly functional, where is the fuel?"

The Way Forward

The Port Harcourt Refinery is vital to Nigeria’s economy, but its rehabilitation has become a symbol of unfulfilled promises. As Nigerians continue to grapple with fuel scarcity and rising costs, transparency and accountability from NNPCL are essential.

For decades, the mismanagement and ineptitude of local government administration have hindered economic development, exacerbated poverty, and undermined the quality of life for millions of citizens. The recent supreme court judgment on local government autonomy offers a glimmer of hope for reform, but the journey ahead will require collective effort and commitment. As a concerned citizen and advocate for good governance, I am compelled to highlight the severe consequences of local government maladministration in Nigeria and urge immediate action to revitalize local economies, restore public trust, and ensure a brighter future for all citizens.

Nigeria's economy and citizenry have suffered greatly due to the mismanagement and ineptitude of local government administration. This has led to a surge in rural-urban migration, leaving villages deserted and fueling irregular and unsafe migration across international borders.

Local government maladministration has hindered economic development, leading to a lack of investment, infrastructure decay, and reduced economic opportunities. In fact, it's estimated that Nigeria has lost over ₦100 billion in revenue due to inefficient tax and revenue collection. Inefficient collection of taxes and revenues has resulted in significant financial losses, further exacerbating economic stagnation.

Poor delivery of essential services like healthcare, education, and sanitation has negatively impacted citizens' quality of life. According to a report by UNICEF, Nigeria's infant mortality rate is 69 deaths per 1,000 live births, one of the highest rates in the world. Inadequate healthcare and education have resulted in poor health outcomes and a lack of skilled workforce.

The exodus of people from rural areas to cities has led to overcrowding, strain on resources, and increased poverty. In fact, it's estimated that over 50,000 people migrate from rural areas to cities every year in search of better opportunities. Once-thriving villages now lie empty, as residents seek better opportunities in urban centers. Desperate citizens risk their lives migrating internationally, often falling prey to human traffickers and exploitation.

Maladministration has widened the poverty gap, leaving vulnerable populations without access to basic necessities of life. According to a World Bank report, the poverty rate is estimated to have reached 38.9% in 2023, with an estimated 87 million Nigerians living below the poverty line — the world’s second-largest poor population after India. Frustration and desperation have led to increased social unrest, crime, and insecurity.

To address these devastating consequences, the recent supreme court judgment on local government autonomy must be fully implemented, followed by reforms in local government administration by implementing effective governance structures, transparency, and accountability. Invest in rural development by providing infrastructure, economic opportunities, and essential services to revitalize rural areas. Address migration drivers by tackling poverty, inequality, and lack of opportunities through initiatives like job creation, vocational training, and social protection schemes.

Citizen participation and engagement are crucial for sustainable change. Therefore, I urge all Nigerians to take ownership of the reform process and demand accountability from their local leaders.

The consequences were far-reaching, leading to a decline in local governance and public service delivery.

The Consequences of Joint Account

The joint account system allowed state governments to exercise significant control over local government funds, creating an environment ripe for corruption and mismanagement. This led to:

1. Misappropriation of Funds: Local government revenues were siphoned off, depriving communities of essential public services and infrastructure. For instance, in 2019, a report by the Nigerian Audit Office revealed that over N10 billion was misappropriated from local government funds in a single state.

2. Decay of Local Governance: The third tier of government, meant to be closest to the people, became ineffective, and local governments struggled to fulfill their constitutional responsibilities. As a result, many local governments failed to provide basic services such as healthcare, education, and sanitation.

3. Inequitable Development: The concentration of power and resources at the state level exacerbated regional disparities, hindering balanced national development. For example, some states received significantly more funding than others, leading to unequal distribution of resources.

Cash "Aye-ko-ooto" Onadele: A Roaring African Voice Calling for Change through the Arts

The arts and their promoters have long served as powerful voices for inspiring and enforcing radical changes across social, political, economic, and cultural landscapes.

Nigeria, and Africa more broadly, has suffered from poor leadership characterised by corruption, nepotism, widespread poverty, stunted development, inequality, loss of identity, erosion of cultural values, and a troubling craving for foreign lifestyles, among other social maladies.

These issues have marred the promising trajectory of a nation with over 200 million people, rich in both natural and human resources, especially since the onset of its current fourth democratic era in 1999.

One of the literary voices leveraging the power of the arts—particularly drama—to inspire change in Nigeria and Africa is Cash Akinyemi Onadele, also known as Aye-ko-Ooto. He is a prolific writer and a culture-aware philosopher, poet, and playwright.

His passion for literature was nurtured by his childhood experiences with his farmer grandparents, who filled his early years with captivating stories. This foundation sparked his interest in literature, and despite earning a Master’s degree in Agronomy, he ultimately found his voice in the realm of the arts.

Onadele firmly believes that the erosion of cultural identity has distorted the mindset of many Nigerians, leading them to embrace foreign influences—revised histories, religions, lifestyles, foods, music, and addictions—instead of the indigenous practices that have proven their worth for centuries before European colonisation.

Through his art, he passionately calls on Africans to return to their roots and heritage as a critical first step towards achieving comprehensive social and economic development. He asserts that a lost mind, devoid of identity, cannot effectively contribute to nation-building.

Despite spending considerable time in Europe and America gaining valuable experience and writing extensively, Onadele has remained true to his African roots, a theme that permeates his impressive body of literary work, which includes over 109 collections of plays, poetry, and prose.

His latest play, "Eni Ogun" (The Noble Warrior), produced with the support of the business sector led by FirstBank, was performed in July across Lagos and Ogun States at iconic venues such as the Muson Centre in Lagos Island and the June 12 Cultural Centre in Abeokuta, in celebration of Prof. Wole Soyinka’s 90th birthday.

Through the play, Aye-ko-ooto not only celebrates Soyinka’s artistic exploits but also tackles critical issues of leadership, identity crisis, culture, values, class, history, and corruption in Nigeria through the lens of history, aligning with Soyinka's radical ideologies.

The protagonist—a representation of Professor Soyinka—is the young and charismatic Oluwole Lowo, a noble prince and warrior who, despite his preference for a private life of hunting, teaching, and romance with his intended, Olasope, becomes the conscience of society, catalysing a seismic shift in leadership and community dynamics.

Set in the colonial era of 1884/1885, the fictional play delves into themes of colonial invasion and subjugation, love, leadership, cultural beliefs, religion, and corruption.

Onadele weaponises the protagonist’s struggles as a potent catalyst for the community’s collective demand for positive change, ultimately leading to the natives’ triumph over their oppressors.

The over two-hour play, an adaptation from the drama emerges as a clarion call for Nigerians and Africans to unite, shed foreign identities and practices, rediscover true histories and heritage, embrace indigenous customs and cultures, advocate for responsible leadership, and strive for an egalitarian society characterised by development.

In an interview with THECONSCIENCE NG, the playwright unveiled the philosophy underpinning the play: “Every soul has a shell,” inspired by Wole Soyinka’s play, “Death and the King’s Horseman” (1975).

He stated, “I distilled the essence of this quote and wrapped literature around it to explore the persona. The story is rich and layered. My aim was to celebrate a dramatist with a drama. I sought the deeper meaning of the quote, combining romantic comedy with beautiful literature, all interwoven with the story of our people.”

Aye-ko-Ooto elaborated on the underlying philosophy: “Every soul has a birthplace, representing identity; every soul is nurtured, reflecting culture; every soul is loved, embodying passion; and every soul has a noble purpose tied to tribal citizenship. When faced with adversity, every soul must summon the courage of character. Ultimately, every soul carries a message, and that message is your inheritance.

“The essence is clear: if you fail to find your identity, neglect your citizenship, and do not stand up for your values in troubled times, you leave your children without an inheritance.”

Onadele described Wole Soyinka as an enigma—a literary cult hero, cultural icon, champion of freedom, and an unwavering advocate for justice, who also holds a deep affection for children. He shared a personal connection with Soyinka, emphasizing the playwright’s commitment to preserving cultural artifacts as an undeniable ambassador of culture.

To promote the Yoruba language and culture, Aye-ko-Ooto intentionally wrote parts of the play in Yoruba, encouraging European audiences to engage more deeply with the language.

In response to the alarming decline in cultural awareness and identity among young Nigerians, the playwright urged the government to embrace ethnography—a principle that prioritizes narratives rooted in African stories. He advocated for increased funding, including prizes and grants, for works celebrating African culture over those with foreign plots.

He called on well-meaning Nigerians to treat artists and their promoters with respect, rather than viewing them as beggars, while encouraging greater support for the arts based on merit.

Onadele, who also has a background in Artificial Intelligence (AI) from his time in Europe, recalls how being exposed at an early age to the works of renowned Nigerian author of Yorùbá heritage, Chief Daniel Olorunfẹmi Fágúnwa (commonly known as D. O. Fágúnwà), inspired his own interest in writing. For him, the Yoruba native voice adds authenticity to storytelling.

According to Onadele, who has built the world’s largest library of individual poetry produced by any single author, every success story has humble beginnings.

Earlier this year, Aye-ko-Ooto was in his element at the Lagos Book and Art Festival (LABAF), dubbed Africa’s largest cultural picnic, where he conducted a two-day mentorship session with undergraduate students from the Creative Arts Department at the University of Lagos on the first day at Kongi’s Harvest Gallery, Freedom Park, Lagos.

Onadele also hosted another mentorship programme for pupils from various public primary schools.

The prolific writer engaged young people on the value of literature while unveiling an endowment for literary prizes in both Yoruba and English languages. It was a rich, educational, and inspiring experience for participating students, as Onadele shared insights from his journey as a writer, despite having a BSc. and MSc. in Agronomy.

Through Adubiifa Network Company (ANC), a multi-media literary, theatre, and movie company, he employs performance theatre as a means to drive change.

His productions have gained recognition from major players like the Wole Soyinka International Cultural Exchange (WSICE) and the Centre for Black and African Arts and Civilization (CBAAC).

Onadele’s name continues to resonate in the literary space, where calls for major shifts and changes in Nigeria keeps growing louder.

Abuja, Nigeria – Nigeria, a nation renowned for its rich cultural heritage and abundant natural resources, has been plagued by corruption, perpetuated by those in positions of power and influence. From religious leaders to traditional rulers, family heads, and politicians, the cancer of corruption has spread far and wide, crippling the nation's progress.

Religious leaders, once esteemed for their moral guidance, have fallen prey to the temptations of wealth and power. Many now exploit their pulpits to accumulate wealth rather than preach righteousness. Their flamboyant lifestyles, often financed by their congregations, are a stark contrast to the poverty and suffering of their followers.

Traditional leaders, custodians of Nigeria's cultural heritage, have also fallen prey to corruption. Some use their positions to extort money from their subjects, while others collude with corrupt government officials to embezzle funds meant for community development.

Family heads, once pillars of discipline and integrity, now prioritize material wealth over moral values. The emphasis on wealth and status has led to a breakdown in family structures, as younger generations are encouraged to pursue riches at all costs.

Politicians, elected to serve the people, have become notorious for their extravagant lifestyles. Embezzlement, nepotism, and cronyism are rampant, with many using public funds to finance their lavish lifestyles. The disconnect between the ruling elite and the masses is staggering, as politicians flaunt their wealth while the majority struggle to survive.

The consequences of corruption are far-reaching. Nigeria's economy suffers, infrastructure crumbles, and essential services like healthcare and education are neglected. The future of the nation is mortgaged to the greed of its leaders.

To break free from this cycle of corruption, Nigerians must demand accountability from their leaders. Collective action is needed to create a culture of transparency, where leaders are held responsible for their actions. Only then can Nigeria hope to reclaim its lost glory and build a brighter future for all.

Amo Byng Nig Limited, a leading producer of poultry feed and concentrates, has commenced a strategic partnership with the Kwara State Government to bolster local soybean production, addressing the current shortage that is impacting poultry feed production across Nigeria. This collaboration was formally launched on July 16, 2024, and marks a significant step towards revitalizing the soybean industry.

The soybean shortage has led to increased feed production costs for poultry farming, as much of Nigeria's soybeans are being exported. In response, Amo Byng Nig Ltd. is stepping in to support local farmers by providing essential farming inputs and committing to purchase the soybean at harvest. This initiative aims to stimulate local production, improve raw material availability, and reduce production costs.

As part of this pilot program, Amo Byng Nig Ltd. has equipped 300 farmers with inputs to cultivate soybean across 1,500 hectares in the Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State. The program encompasses four communities within the local government area. In support of this initiative, the Kwara State Government has allocated tractors to assist farmers with land preparation, enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of the farming process.

Dr. Ayoola Oduntan, Group Managing Director of Amo Byng Nig Ltd., emphasized the importance of the partnership: “Addressing the soybean shortage is crucial for the poultry industry, as it directly impacts feed production. This partnership is vital for providing farmers with the necessary inputs and ensuring the purchase of their harvest. Our goal is to stimulate local production and alleviate the raw material shortage.”

CGC Adeniyi Reactivates Over Decade-Old CMAA With US Customs & Border Protection

...Aims to Promote Better Service Delivery to Nigerians Through Global Partnerships

The Comptroller-General of Customs (CGC) Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, On Thursday, July 18, 2024, took a significant step in strengthening global partnerships by participating in a bilateral meeting with U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) in Washington, D.C. The meeting focused on reviving the over-decade-old Customs Mutual Assistance Agreement (CMAA) to enhance service delivery through global collaborations and data-driven decision-making to improve national security and effectively combat cross-border crimes.

Adeniyi emphasised that Customs officials have been actively addressing the challenges of cross-border crimes, including drug trafficking, arms smuggling, and money laundering while ensuring national security.

He highlighted the successful interception of illegal items, such as drugs and weapons, at major ports and airports in Nigeria.“Reviving the CMAA will bolster the Nigeria Customs Service's capacity to protect the nation's borders and enhance service delivery, paving the way for a more secure and prosperous future for all Nigerians”, he added.

He also stressed the need for increased capacity building to tackle Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) enforcement and opiate issues. "Our efforts at the ports and airports have yielded significant results, but there is still much to be done in capacity building and enforcement," he said.

Adeniyi underscored the importance of a Center for Advanced Cargo and Passenger Data Analysis to mitigate risks. He pointed out the success of prosecuting wildlife criminals and discussed the need for such a centre to enhance cargo and passenger security.

Additionally, he advocates for an advanced command and control centre to address security concerns. “A dedicated targeting data fusion centre will significantly improve our ability to manage risks and enhance security measures,” Adeniyi explained.

The meeting also covered the challenges of commercial air cargo security and potential partnerships with U.S. government agencies. Adeniyi highlighted the importance of future operations, including CBP's global targeting advisory directors and their capabilities in information sharing on cargo and passenger sides. “By customising our approaches and collaborating globally, we can address the complexities of air cargo security more effectively,” he remarked.

In his reaction, James Collins, Assistant Commissioner of the Office of International Affairs at U.S. Customs and Border Protection, emphasised data integration, partnerships, and targeted efforts to address transnational criminal groups exploiting seams and boundaries. “Integration of data and international cooperation is crucial in countering transnational threats”.

James Collins also highlighted the importance of collaboration and information sharing in border security and intelligence gathering. He emphasised investing in capacity building, train-the-trainer programs, and targeted training to address gaps in border security. Collins stressed the need for secure channels for sharing intelligence and building partnerships with international organisations to sustain efforts in combating illicit trade and traffic. “Continuous training and secure intelligence sharing are vital to our success in maintaining border security,” Collins noted.

Key action items identified include establishing specific channels for continued intelligence sharing between Nigeria Customs and CBP, exploring operational partnerships between Nigeria Customs units and networks like CBP to coordinate cross-border responses, leveraging INTERPOL programs and collaborating with other West and Central African countries on transnational crimes.

The meeting concluded with a presentation on Artificial Intelligence by Sunil Madhugri from the Office of Information and Technology, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, highlighting the future of technology in enhancing customs operations and security. “Artificial intelligence will play a pivotal role in our strategy to modernise and secure our borders,” Madhugri said.

In a related event, CGC Bashir Adewale Adeniyi visited the Nigerian Embassy in the USA, where he was received by Mr. Rabiu Lawal, Charge d'Affaires a.i, and his team. The CGC appreciated them for their warm reception and their tireless efforts for all the Nigerians in the diaspora.

At this year's largest Youth World Cup, the 2024 Gothia Cup, Hon. Ayoola Lawal, the former National Chairman of All Progressives Scandinavia, made a notable appearance to cheer on the Nigerian teams. His presence added a touch of distinction to the event, highlighting the importance of international youth sports competitions.

In his address, Hon. Lawal lauded the teams for their remarkable performance and particularly acknowledged the exceptional efforts of the coaching team led by Mr. Adegun Shola.

"We had four Nigerian teams at this year's largest Youth World Cup. The semifinal of the under-17 boys, where two Nigerian teams faced each other, was essentially the final of the competition. It was a highlight of the event and well attended," he remarked. This statement underscored the high level of talent and competition displayed by the young Nigerian athletes.

Hon. Lawal also expressed his optimism for the future, hoping that a female team from Nigeria will participate in the next edition of the Youth World Cup. His vision emphasizes the importance of inclusivity and the development of female athletes in international sports. Additionally, he commended the Nigeria Eagles team in the under-16 boys category for their impressive performance, recognizing their dedication and skill.
