The Anti-Kidnapping unit of the Imo State Police Command has arrested a couple, Ifeanyi Anyanwu and Amarachi Ugorji, for allegedly stealing and selling a two-year-old boy, Ikechukwu Nwachukwu, for N500,000.

The couple allegedly stole the child on August 28 from his parents in Umuozu-Uguiri in the Isiala Mbano Local Government Area of the state.

Punch learnt that prior to the incident, Anyanwu and Ugorji had sold their first child on credit to a man in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Andrew Enwerem, during a parade on Wednesday, said in the latest incident, the couple kidnapped and sold Nwachukwu for N500,000 to one Ifeanyinwa Duru.

Duru was said to have resold the boy to one Mrs. Chidinma Emmanuel, for N700,000.

The police spokesperson, who described the development as worrisome, said the couple, Duru and Emmanuel were nabbed in Aba, Abia State, adding that the child was rescued unhurt.

Enwerem said,

“On August 28, 2017, Ifeanyi Anyanwu, 23; and Amarachi Ugorji,18, conspired and kidnapped Ikechukwu Nwachukwu, who is two years and six months old, from his parents in Umuozu- Uguiri in the Isiala Mbano LGA.

“The two suspects, after the kidnap, started demanding ransom from the parents of the child. When the parents of the kidnapped child could not provide the money, they opted to sell the child to one Ifeanyinwa Duru, 39, at the cost of N500,000. Duru, in turn, resold the child to one Chidimma Emmanuel, 42, at the cost of N700,000.

“The two buyers were arrested in Aba following painstaking investigation, while the child was rescued unhurt and has since been reunited with the legitimate parents by the command.

“The suspects have confessed to the crime and investigation has been concluded. The syndicate will soon be charged to court.

“The Commissioner of Police, Chris Ezike, has instructed all heads of the tactical units of the command to go all out against those who trade in human beings, especially children, who have done nothing wrong except that they were born into a society that has lost its values.”

Emmanuel said her desperation to have a male child after the death of her husband lured her into the crime.

The couple said that they had earlier sold their first child to an unnamed person in Port Harcourt for N200,000, on credit.

A police source said that operatives of the command were already closing in on the buyer and would soon arrest him and rescue the child.

It was learnt that 18-year-old Ugorji was already pregnant with another child.

Patrick Medayese, a 26-year-old Mechanical Engineering student of Federal Polytechnic in Idah, on Saturday won the annual 10km race organised by the S.O. Adeleye Foundation in Kabba, Kogi.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the race which started from Kabba and ended in Iyara had 648 contestants, comprising 559 male and 89 female.

Medayese, who had a time of 45 minutes 53 seconds, while speaking to newsmen after the race, thanked God for the opportunity given to him this year.

“I have engaged in various forms of training for this big day. I finished third during the 2016 race, but I made up my mind that I will be the first this year and God has granted me this,’’ he said.

The male competition winner also thanked the race organisers for the opportunity given to the competitors to showcase their talent.

He promised not to disappoint at the national level.

Rashidat Musa, a 16-year-old Senior Secondary School (SSS) 3 student of St Monica College in Kabba, won the female event with a time of 53 minutes 40 seconds.

Speaking also, Musa said running has always been her hobby as she has always run for her school.

“My parents are in support and they always encouraged me to be the best in whatever I am doing and never to give up.”

The first runner-up in the female event, Nike Alfred who is a mother of a nine-month-old baby, said if not for her baby she would have won the race.

“But I will be warming up for the next edition of this competition,” she said.

The first runner-up in the male event, Olubo Micheal, thanked the organisers for putting youths in mind, promising to do more in the next edition.

Founder of S.O. Adeleye Foundation and sponsor/organiser of the race, Sunday Adeleye, said he was very happy with the turnout of competitors.

“Even though I expected more, but I am not disappointed. I believe that the turnout in 2018 will be bigger.”

He said the competition was his own way of giving back to the society he has gained so much from.

“I am giving back to my country from my achievements, because sports took me where I am today, and encouraging youths is the only way I can give back.”

Adeleye disclosed that the two champions from the male and female events would be sponsored to the Lagos city marathon race.

“They will go through other trainings to prepare them,’’ he said.

NAN reports that the first to third position winners received cash prizes of N20,000 each, while those who placed fourth to 10th receive

Veteran Nigerian singer, Prof. Victor Uwaifo, has accused music stars, Jaywon and Simi of remixing his hit song ‘Joromi’ without obtaining permission from him.

According to the singer who was one-time Edo State Commissioner for Arts and Culture, he won’t be suing but encouraged new generation singers to give credit for their work.

Here’s what he said in his exclusive chat with Vanguard Showtime;

“They didn’t contact me before doing a remix of Joromi; but I’m like a father to them so I can’t begin to drag them to court, so let them make a living out of it, but at the same time it’s piracy.

I’ve heard it too many times on different occasions; it shows the quality of the music that has come a long way. As far as I’m concerned I’ve lived five lives (from one generation to the other), so if they want to appreciate and still appreciate me, it shows the quality of the music. .

It’s one thing to be an artiste and it’s another thing to stay on the scene for a long time; so I will not discourage artistes trying to remix or do another rendition of Joromi, but rather encourage them to give credit to the composer if they do”.
