Politics › Breaking News -- Virginia Police Say 'multiple Fatals' In Shooting by Pharoh(op): 3:10am On Jan 20, 2010 |
APPOMATTOX, Va. — A lone shooter was responsible for multiple deaths and injuries Tuesday and more than 100 law enforcement officials had him circled in the woods where they believe he is hiding, state police said.
A spokeswoman could not say how many were dead or injured in the shootings or what sparked the violence.
The gunman also fired at a sheriff's deputy and a state police helicopter, which had to land with a ruptured fuel tank after one or more rounds struck it, the spokeswoman, Corrine Geller, said. No police were injured.
"We believe we have the male suspect confined in a wooded area," Geller said.
The violence began shortly after noon when an injured man was found on a rural stretch of road. A deputy who went to investigate fled after he heard gunshots, Geller said.
Appomattox is about 100 miles southwest of Richmond. It is best known as the place where Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee surrendered to Union Gen. Ulyssess S. Grant to end the Civil War. http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,583389,00.html?test=latestnews |
Politics › Re: More Crisis In Jos Today by Pharoh: 2:22am On Jan 20, 2010 |
"This report is false and way off the mark. As usual, the muslims who are better connected and more economically endowed have ensured that they pay to get false stories out faster than anyone else. The crises started because a muslim bike man hit a christian girl in front of St Micheal Catholic church on sunday morning. On that street, muslims live on one side and christians on the other and as usual, the muslims had been trying to terrorize the christians out of the area. The argument that ensued after the accident was a good opportunity for the muslims to invade the church and begin to attack the christians during mass. They then went on rampage and began to set fire on the christian homes in the area. Even after that, peace was restored that sunday, but of course, they had stock piled arms and made fake military uniforms for themselves over time and were quite eager to use them hence the monday night breakout." saw this comment on sahara reporters and the VP has ordered the military to quench the riot in jos. |

Politics › Jonathan Orders Troops To Jos Religious Crisis by Pharoh(op): 1:41am On Jan 20, 2010 |
With close to 200 deaths so far recorded as a result of renewed Muslim-Christian clashes in the central city of Jos in Plateau state, vice-president, Goodluck Jonathan has ordered troops to the state to restore peace.
National Security Adviser Sarki Mukthar told reporters that "the military have moved in concert with the police to normalise the situation" in the city. He also said the vice president had ordered security chiefs to "immediately move to Jos, to assess the situation".
Fresh violence broke out in the one of Nigeria's largest cities between Christians and Muslims early Tuesday morning after a day calm following violent attacks on Sunday. The state's commissioner for information, Gregory Yenlong announced a 24-hour curfew on the state and directed non-essential workers to vacate their offices.
Dead bodies "We received 156 dead bodies this morning and another 36 this afternoon, in total we have 192 dead bodies" said Balarabe Dawud, the head of the central mosque in Jos.
The fighting had started on Sunday when some youth protested the renovation of a building damaged in a Christian-majority area during an earlier crisis in 2008 in which close to 200 lives were lost. Houses and vehicles were set ablaze during Sunday's violence and the state governor, Jonah Jang imposed a 12-hour curfew on the state capital that day. Police were deployed on the streets Monday to enforce the curfew invoked on Sunday and it appeared that peace had been restored to the city.
The Red Cross said more than a hundred people were seriously injured in the fighting and 3,000 people were displaced in Sunday's clashes.
Trapped Unconfirmed reports from Kuru Jenta, a village on the outskirts of Jos claimed that the village had been set on fire Tuesday, and the Muslims in the village had been surrounded. It is unclear what their fate has been. NEXT also gathered that about thirty National Youth Service Corps members were holed up without food at a Christian corps member's fellowship building in Jos.
The National Youth Service Corp Director-General, Ismaila Tsiga had on Monday threatened to withdraw all corps members serving in Plateau state after the violence broke out on Sunday. Three male corps members were murdered in the state during the 2008 violent clashes.
Plateau state governor, Jonah Jang is expected to make a public address on Tuesday night. http://234next.com/csp/cms/sites/Next/Home/5514478-146/jonathan_orders_troops_to_jos_religious.csp |

Clashes between Muslim and Christian gangs have broken out again in the capital of central Nigeria's Plateau state, Jos, causing dozens of deaths and forcing police to impose a 24-hour curfew. A police official said on Tuesday that as many as 60 people might have been killed since Sunday when clashes started. Mohammed Shittu, an employee at Jos central mosque, where he said bodies were being taken, told the AFP news agency around 150 people had been killed in fighting, with around 800 wounded. "On Sunday evening, we buried 19 corpses and 52 yesterday. As of right now, there are 78 at the mosque yet to be buried," Shittu said. The figures could not be independently confirmed. Residents said sporadic gunfire could be heard in many neighbourhoods and several houses were on fire, but the violence had not spread beyond the city itself. Security forces are trying to prevent a repetition of clashes in November 2008, in which hundreds of residents were killed in the country's worst fighting between Muslim and Christian gangs in years. Curfew imposed Earlier on Tuesday, Gregory Anyating, the state's police commissioner, said: "In view of this situation in town, I hereby declare a 24-hour curfew starting from now." Goodluck Jonathan, the Nigerian vice-president, who has taken over ceremonial duties from Umaru Yar'Adua, the ailing president, has directed the national security adviser and senior police officials to take the necessary action to restore calm to the city. Ima Niboro, the vice-president's spokesman, said: "I assure you that the federal government is on top of the situation in Jos and the situation is under control." This week's violence started after an argument between Muslim and Christian neighbours over the rebuilding of homes destroyed in the 2008 clashes.Nigeria has roughly equal numbers of Christians and Muslims, although traditional animist beliefs underpin many people's faiths. More than 200 ethnic groups generally live peacefully side by side in the West African country, although one million people were killed in a civil war between 1967 and 1970 and there have been outbreaks of religious unrest since then. At least 40 people were killed last month in clashes between Nigerian security forces and members of an Islamic sect in the northern city of Bauchi http://english.aljazeera.net/news/africa/2010/01/2010119135631230684.html |
Politics › Death Toll In Jos Riot Now 150 And 800 Now Wounded. by Pharoh(op): 8:58pm On Jan 19, 2010 |
At least 149 people have been killed during two days of violence between Christian and Muslim gangs in the Nigerian city of Jos, officials say.
Mosque workers and Muslim clerics told reporters of the deaths as they prepared for a mass burial.
The death toll has not been verified independently and it is not known how many Christians have died.
Nigeria's vice-president has ordered troops to help police restore order and also dispatched top security officials.
It is believed to be the first time Goodluck Jonathan has used executive powers since President Umaru Yar'Adua left Nigeria for hospital treatment in Saudi Arabia in November.
The clashes broke out on Sunday and have continued since, with reports of gunfire and burning buildings.
A 24-hour curfew has been enforced in the area, which has seen several bouts of deadly violence in recent years.
At least 200 people were killed in an outbreak of fighting between Muslims and Christians in 2008, while some 1,000 died in a riot in 2001.
Violence spreading
The current violence has forced at least 3,000 people from their homes.
Jos has long been a time-bomb waiting to explode.
The town is split into Christian and Muslim areas. The divisions have been perpetuated by Nigeria's system of classifying people as indigenes and settlers.
Hausa-speaking Muslims have been living in Jos for many decades but are still classified as settlers, meaning it is difficult for them to stand for election.
The two groups are also divided along party political lines with Christians mostly backing the ruling PDP, and Muslims generally supporting the opposition ANPP.
In Nigeria, political office means access to resources.
Balarabe Dawud, head of the Central Mosque in Jos, told AFP news agency he had counted 192 bodies since Sunday.
Muhammad Tanko Shittu, a mosque worker who was helping to prepare mass burials, told Reuters he had counted 149 bodies.
"On Sunday evening we buried 19 corpses, and 52 yesterday. As of right now, there are 78 at the mosque yet to be buried," he said.
Anglican Archbishop of Jos Benjamin Kwashi told the BBC that the situation was improving in the city centre, where security forces have been deployed.
But the violence spread beyond the city boundaries on Tuesday to neighbouring areas.
Jos is in Nigeria's volatile Middle Belt - between the mainly Muslim north and the south where the majority is Christian or follow traditional religions.
Correspondents say such clashes in Nigeria are often blamed on sectarianism.
However, poverty and access to resources such as land often lie at the root of the violence.
It is unclear what the trigger was for the latest bout of violence.
Plateau State spokesman Dan Manjang told the BBC's Network Africa programme there were reports that it may have started after a football match.
But he said it would be surprising if football was the reason.
Reuters quoted residents as saying the violence started after an argument over the rebuilding of homes destroyed in the 2008 clashes. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/africa/8468456.stm |
