A former top Nigerian player who dumped his nation to play for little-known Haiti, says he does not regret the decision despite not reaching the peak of his career. Emmanuel Sarki was a contemporary of John Obi Mikel in the Golden Eaglets team that featured in the 2003 FIFA U-17 World Cup hosted by Finland. While Mikel is on the verge of leading Nigeria to the 2018 World Cup having featured in the 2014 edition of the Mundial held in Brazil, Sarki, who at his peak was signed by Chelsea in 2006 has resigned to faith playing for little known, Haiti. But the 28-year-old remains adamant, saying he has no regrets dumping Nigeria for Haiti. He revealed the real reasons he abandoned Nigeria. In an interview published in the Scottish Sun, Sarki said he decided to snub Nigeria and play international football for Haiti instead because he got sick of being asked to pay up to £1,000 to play for the Super Eagles. “I was told to pay before I am called up, that was when I was playing in Israel. I won’t mention the name of the coach,” he said. “It was Efe Ambrose who gave me the contact of the coach after telling him of my form. I put a call across to him, but he told me to speak with his assistant, who openly asked me for money. “A lot of friends asked me to pay the money, but the sum they were quoting was way more than what I can afford. I couldn’t pay it and despite my fine form, I wasn’t contacted again.” Sarki, who was able play for the Flying Eagles, the Nigeria U-20 and also the U-23 team but he never fulfilled his dream with the Super Eagles, said it is a different ball game with the Haiti national team.

Victor Ezegwu, the General Officer Commanding of the Nigerian Army 7 Division in Maimalari, escaped being lynched by rampaging Nigerian soldiers on Friday morning, PREMIUM TIMES can report. Details of the attempted assault on Mr. Ezegwu, a major general, by troops attached to ‘Operation Rescue Finale’ in Sambisa Forest, came a day after he denied our report about a mutiny on the battlefront. The troops were enraged over poor welfare arrangement and alleged deceit by their commanders, our sources recounted. Specifically, they accused the commander of leaving them to fight for two days without food. The incident occurred in Sambisa Forest on Friday morning, as this newspaper reported. Most of the soldiers involved in the mutiny were deployed to Sambisa from 21 Brigade in Bama, Borno State. PREMIUM TIMES obtained new details of the incident on Saturday, that show that the soldiers went from 9:00 a.m. on December 14 till 6:00 p.m. on December 15 — more than 24 hours — without food. When Mr. Ezegwu eventually arrived in a helicopter bearing foods and other supplies on Friday morning, the troops swooped on him and scavenged the snacks, food and water he brought. They removed all the supplies, including parts for operational vehicles and other equipment, before moving towards the GOC in an attempt to attack him, our sources said. “The GOC escaped being lynched because he was immediately shoved into an aircraft and whisked away from the area,” a source said. With their target having escaped, the troops began sporadic firing, sources said. They also rained curses on their commander. Army spokesman, Sani Usman, did not immediately respond to PREMIUM TIMES’ request for comments Saturday afternoon. Shortly after our report about the incident on Friday, Mr. Ezegwu issued a statement to deny our facts. Mr. Ezegwu said he was at Bama on Friday morning but he did not witness any outbreak of violence amongst the troops, much less against his person. “I want to assure that nothing like mutiny happened in Bama. Nothing happened,” he told reporters in Maiduguri on Friday. “I just came back from Bama and nothing like that happened.” Military sources told PREMIUM TIMES that the Army has commenced efforts to evacuate some troops from the area in order to forestall complete breakdown of order. The Army leadership will also increase supply of essential materials to the troops. The latest tumult over lack of adequate food and water for the troops came eight months after a similar situation played out in Alagarno. At the time, troops fighting to take control of the town attempted to kill their GOC after they were left for five days without water. There have been repeated cases of mutiny by Nigerian soldiers since the war against Boko Haram began, and the Army has tried over 100 soldiers for the offence. The worst case occurred in May 2014 when troops of 7 Division, angered by the death of 12 of their colleagues in a Boko Haram ambush, opened fire on the vehicle of their General Officer Commanding (GOC), Ahmadu Mohammed, a major general. The soldiers were later arrested, tried and jailed. The Army launched “Operation Rescue Final” earlier this month to dislodge Boko Haram insurgents from Sambisa Forest — a massive reserve which has long been occupied by the terrorists — and rescue civilians trapped there. The commanders have claimed success in the operation, with thousands of women and children having been announced rescued. But the momentum is being threatened by frequent complaints of poor equipment and welfare for the troops. In October soldiers told PREMIUM TIMES of how they were forced to go without salaries for months. Similarly, the troops also complained about their allowances being arbitrarily reduced by their commanders as well as how they made do with low-nutrient meals in undignified environments. Although the Army denied any poor treatment of the personnel, it immediately started paying the soldiers a few days after the report. Since then, soldiers have regularly reported being timely and appropriately remunerated and expressed their comfort until yesterday’s fallout. Nigeria has discovered huge crude oil concentration in Borno State, North East, raising the hope of the region joining the league of oil producers. Lagos state recently joined the league of crude oil producers. Some states in the league are Bayelsa, Rivers, Delta, Akwa Ibom. The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Petroleum Resources, Dr. Jamila Shua’ra, broke the news on Thursday at the presentation of the 2016 petroleum sector scorecard in Abuja. She said that the discovery of crude oil in Borno State was one of the achievements of the ministry during the year. “Our doggedness culminated in the discovery of oil in new frontiers – Lagos and Borno,” Leadership reported on Friday. She also listed the introduction of the petrol Price Modulation Matrix as another achievement of the ministry. Other achievements are the all round availability of petrol in all outlets; eradication of payment on fuel subsidies; and located foreign direct investment to finance midstream oil and gas infrastructure. The adopted exit strategies on Joint Venture Cash Call; robust engagement of host communities to reduce agitations; and creation of more stable industrial relations,” she said were other achievements. Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, who presided over the ceremony, stated that the deregulation of the downstream sector, which led to the elimination of petroleum subsidy, saved the government a burden of N15.4 billion monthly. The vice president was represented by the attorney-general and minister of justice, Alhaji Abubakar Malami. He stated that the oil and gas sector remain very critical to the stability and growth of the nation’s economy as it accounts for about 90 per cent of the country’s earnings, in addition to contributing substantially to the inflow of foreign exchange and growth of foreign reserves. Prof. Osinbajo further disclosed that the Federal Executive Council (FEC) had recently approved new measures and strategies aimed at eliminating the burden of Joint Venture Cash Call arrears and easing future payments in the up-stream sector, stressing that the strategies are fully supported by the National Economic Council (NEC). EQUATORIAL GUINEA, TWO OTHERS POACH STARS AS MASS RETIREMENT LOOMS. Women football is set for a meltdown as Saturday Telegraph uncovers a grand plot by a Nigerian outfit to facilitate mass movement of the country’s budding and established stars to represent another African nations. Our correspondent learnt that the organisation’s proposals to about four African countries had been endorsed and had already been collating names of Nigerian players that would be part of the first phase of the movement. A top member of the ‘ring’ told our correspondent that they related with many Nigerian players especially those who had represented the country at major junior international competitions who showed enthusiasm to dump the country and feature for other nations at the senior level. The official, who also represented the country at the highest level, said many younger generations of women footballers had lost interest in representing the country following the shabby treatment of female footballers. “I am sorry to inform you about what we are planning women which is to take many of Nigerian players to other African countries,” the former footballer who represented the country at the World Cup said. “Countries like Equatorial Guinea and Congo DR are serious about women football and have requested we facilitate movement of talents from here to their countries. “We are also working with about two other countries at the moment and very soon we will see many Nigeria’s junior players dorning the jerseys of other countries at the full international level. They are tired of the way the game is run here, some of us who are based abroad are unhappy that we do not have functional league, there is no plan for the future of these kids and we feel we can chart a brighter future for them with this arrangement.” Meanwhile, Nigeria Football Federation should be ready for mass retirement of Super Falcons players following the bonus row between the two parties. Several top players in the team told Saturday Telegraph they would throw in the towel as soon as the dust over the bonus row dies down. “We know the NFF is going to victimise us after what we did but we are ready for them,” a striker who did not want her name in print said. “Many of us have resolved to retire at the same time, we are not going to do this in our own interest but we have the duty to safeguard the future of next generation of players.” “We won’t wait until they disgrace us out of the team for our role in the bonus crisis, we will leave the squad for them and let them spend another three years building a new side,” another player who is based abroad, said.
