There is an Internal Audit department in every structured company. So what do these Internal Auditors do?

It is the Internal Auditor that checks and confirms that all departments (Accounts, Human Resources, Procurement, Strategy, Administration, Operations, IT etc.) are performing their daily operations according to the laid down policies and procedures in a company.
If there is a case of Fraud in the company, the Internal Auditor would be the first to detect it. It is also his job to detect fraud and report on financial or non-financial inconsistencies.

Let me explain further…. I’ll use a real life scenario to explain who an Internal Auditor is:

In 2018, while contracted as Internal Auditors for one of the Top 3 largest real estate companies in Lagos, we were briefed by the CEO that the company built two different estates having the same plan & structures between 2014 – 2017 (let’s call them Project A & Project B). Both projects were handled by separate Project Managers but surprisingly the company spent 36% more on building Project B.
Project Managers were never given cash to buy building materials so all they needed to do was request for Gravel, Sand, Iron and other supplies from the Procurement department who would then deliver it to the project site.

The big question was – how did Project B end up spending 36% more (108m naira) more than Project A.

After reviewing several documents (Purchase orders, Invoices, signed delivery notes, other supporting documents) and doing some analysis, we found out that:

• The Procurement Manager was conniving with the Suppliers to issue Purchase orders for excess materials for not only Project B but also Project A whereas the Supplier delivers less than he has been paid for. The Inventory officer’s records were instrumental in confirming these fraudulent activities.
• In Project B, the Project manager often requested more materials than necessary at different stages of the project.

Apart from the Company (Legal) Secretary, it is only the Internal Auditor that reports directly to the CEO/Managing Director. This is because of how important the role is to the oversight of the entire company.

In fact, because of the comprehensive knowledge and company information that the Internal Audit department are exposed to in the company by virtue of their daily job, the Head of Internal Audit is usually in pole position to replace a retiring or resigning CEO.

The Bank’s board of directors would call consulting firms to independently analyse each item of cost & expenses and report on those yearly expenses that can be stopped or optimised (let’s explain this).

Optimising an expense is when for instance, the bank develops an automation software/technology that can reduce the number of staff doing a particular task so they can now focus on other productive stuff.

Beyond this, Management consultants do so much for Banks, insurance companies, Technology and financial services firms including: Internal Audit, Business process review, Cost optimisation, Business expansion & Transformation, Project & Product Management services, Customer Relationship Management services.

When CocaCola wants to release a new product, it would hire a consulting firm

The Management consultants would determine if the product is viable through surveys, then when, where and how to market these products, and analyse the potential income and worst case loss scenarios.
