THIRD MAINLAND CRASH: I WAS NOT SPEEDING Olusola Oladimeji, the driver of the Toyota Sienna that fell off the Third Mainland Bridge into the lagoon on Saturday, has described his escape as a miracle. The father of three said contrary to reports by traffic and emergency officials, he was not on high speed when the incident occurred. Oladimeji, who is a minister of the Mountain of Fire and Miracles Church, said he was on his way home from work. He said, “I work on the island and I left home for a meeting in the early hours of Saturday. After the monthly environmental sanitation, I started driving back home. “I was driving at the speed of 60km/hr and was on the fast lane because the road was free. At Ebute Meta bypass, I saw two vehicles that had been involved in an accident but I kept on driving. Suddenly, everything went blank, I couldn’t see anything again, and I just found myself in the water.” Oladimeji said he did not lose consciousness in the water and as such, was able to loosen the seat belt. He said in the water, he saw a ray of light and swam towards it. He said, “I was not on high speed. When the car hit the railing of the bridge, the airbag was not released. “After falling into the water, I unfastened the seat belt and noticed that one of the doors of my car had broken off, so I swam out of the vehicle to the surface of the water even though I don’t know how to swim. “It was while I was waving my hand that fishermen saw me and quickly came to my aid. They took me away from the scene and took me to a clinic located on the water where they administered the first aid.” PUNCH Metro learnt that Oladimeji was later taken to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital where an X-ray scan was conducted on him. “The doctors said that my leg was not fractured. They, however, cast my leg with Plaster of Paris because I had a sprain,” he said. Oladimeji said contrary to what is written on his medical report, he is 43 years old not 53. Our correspondent, who visited the Abule Egba home of the victim, observed members of his church came in droves to felicitate with him. A pastor at MFM, Berkeley Parish, Mrs. Praise Onanuga, said the incident was an indication of the existence of God. She said the victim had just bought the car eight days before the accident. She said, “Brother Oladimeji is the leader of prophetic group and a house fellowship coordinator. He was supposed to have been at a vigil with us the night before but he begged to be excused because of the meeting he was to have on Saturday. “He bought the car just eight days before the accident and we were supposed to do the dedication today (Sunday) but we thank God that we were not put to shame. “We will hold a thanksgiving for him soon because this is a miracle.” |

Maiduguri: The massacre in Nigerian town of Mubi which killed at least 25 students is suspected to have been triggered by campus politics after an election at Federal Polytechnic College, reports emerged Wednesday. Gunmen wearing military uniforms barged into students accommodations outside the campus of the Federal Polytechnic Mubi College, killing students by calling out their names, leading the police to conclude that it was a “work of insiders” and not Boko Haram. The massacre comes a week after elections were held and police are hinting that the attack might have been staged by the students, as a fallout of campus politics. Adamawa state police spokesman Ibrahim Muhammad said, “Boko Haram (attackers) open fire sporadically,” said Muhammad. “In this case, the attackers called their victims by name and left other people in the room alone. This is not the modus operandi of Boko Haram.” Another official, Yushau Shuaib, the spokesman for the National Emergency Management Agency also reached at a similar conclusion when he said in a statement, “The crisis in Mubi is suspected to have been fuelled by campus politics after an election at the (college)”. Of all 25 killed, 19 were students of Federal Polytechnic Mubi, three were students of another college, and remaining comprised of an ex-soldier, a security guard and an elderly man, said Ibrahim Muhammad. However, the total number of those killed couldn’t be verified as some residents said that 40 people were shot or stabbed by the gunmen. Mubi is a Nigerian town situated along the border with Borno state, where Boko Haram have been prominent, as they had also staged an uprising in the capital Maiduguri. Boko Haram has launched frequent attacks in Maiduguri and, to a lesser degree, in Mubi. However, there was no claim of responsibility on Tuesday for either of the student attacks. The college attack follows the killing Saturday of three students outside a university campus, about 100 miles (170 kilometers) away, in the city of Maiduguri, Boko Haram’s spiritual home. Boko Haram’s deadly campaign has targeted mosques, churches, schools, government buildings and, more recently, phone masts worth millions of dollars, but targeting students and killing them so brutally would be new for the sect. Microsoft Unveils New Logo -- First Major Change In 25 Years Microsoft isn’t just getting ready to release a new operating system on the world, the Redmond giant is also sporting a new logo. This might not seem all that exciting, but it represents the first major logo change for the company in 25 years. This logo change isn’t unexpected. I’ve already seen this logo on press photos for new peripherals that the company is launching to complement the Windows 8 operating system. http://www.forbes.com/sites/adriankingsleyhughes/2012/08/23/microsoft-unveils-new-logo/ |
INTERNET GIANT Google plans to lay off a fifth of Motorola workers and close 94 of the US phone maker's offices worldwide, the New York Times reports. The job losses and office closures are likely to hit US workers hardest, with Google plotting to cut a third of the 4,000 workers from Motorola's American work force. The staffing cuts will also hit Motorola management, with Google set to shed 40 per cent of the firm's former vice presidents. Dennis Woodside, Motorola's new chief executive told the New York Times that the phone maker will "leave unprofitable markets, stop making low-end devices and focus on a few cellphones instead of dozens," perhaps taking a tip from HTC's 'hero device' strategy. He added that Motorola will focus on making its products cool again, by configuring devices with thinks like "sensors that recognise who is in a room based on their voice" and better camera sensors. "We're excited about the smartphone business," Woodside added. "The Google business is built on a wired model, and as the world moves to a pretty much completely wireless model over time, it's really going to be important for Google to understand everything about the mobile consumer." Motorola has had a tough time in recent years, struggling to compete against Apple and Samsung, which combined make up 85 per cent of the smartphone market and 90 per cent of overall profits. "It got left in the dust by the competition and kind of missed the smartphone transition," said Charles Golvin, a mobile analyst at Forrester Research. |
Google is creating an information bridge between its influential internet search engine and its widely used Gmail service in its latest attempt to deliver more personal responses more quickly. The experimental feature unveiled today for Gmail users will enable Google's search engine to mine the correspondence stored within a user's Gmail account for any data tied to a search request. For example, a query containing the word "Amazon" would pull emails with shipping information sent by the online retailer. The destiny of search is to become that perfect Star Trek computer Such Gmail results will typically be shown to the right of the main results, though in some instances, the top of the search page will highlight an answer extracted directly from an email. For example, the request "my flight" will show specific airline information imported from Gmail. Something similar could eventually happen when searching for a restaurant reservation or tickets to a concert. Although Google has a commanding lead in internet search, it remains worried about the threat posed by social networking services such as Facebook Inc. As social networks have made it easier to share information online, the web is starting to revolve more around people than the keywords and links that Google's search engine. Advertisement Google has been trying to adapt by building more personal services and plugging them into its search engine. Blending email information into general search results could raise privacy worries. Google is trying to mitigate that by showing Gmail results in a collapsed format that users must open to see the details. For now, users must sign up to participate. Google ran into trouble over privacy in 2010 when it tapped the personal contact information within Gmail accounts to build a social networking service called Buzz. Google set up Buzz in a way that caused many users to inadvertently expose personal data from Gmail. An uproar culminated in a Federal Trade Commission settlement requiring the company to improve its privacy controls and undergo audits for 20 years. Google is treading carefully as it hooks Gmail up to its internet search engine. The new feature initially will be available to 1 million Gmail users who sign up at g.co/searchtrial . That's a small fraction of the more than 425 million Gmail accounts that have been set up since Google launched its free email service eight years ago to compete against the offerings from Yahoo and Microsoft. After getting feedback from the test participants, Google hopes to give all Gmail users the option of plugging their accounts into the main search engine, according to Amit Singhal, a senior vice president for the company. Singhal said Google is also willing to display information from other email service in its main search results. The gesture could avoid spurring additional complaints about Google abusing its position as the internet's search leader to favour its other services. That issue is the focal point of an antitrust investigation by antitrust regulators in the US and Europe. Microsoft said it has no plans to make information in its competing web mail service available to Google's search engine. Yahoo, which operates another Gmail rival, had no comment. When it started in 2004, Gmail provided 1 gigabyte of free storage, an amount that was unheard of at the time. Now, many long-time Gmail users have 10 gigabytes of storage. That has turned Gmail into a valuable storehouse of personal information going back several years. Gmail users already can pluck information contained in old correspondence by conducting a search within Gmail. Google is betting Gmail users will appreciate being able to eliminate a step by including any relevant email information alongside the results of its main search page. In the process, Google is hoping web surfers will have even more reasons to use its dominant search engine, which already processes more than 100 billion requests every month. Luring more queries is crucial to Google because they give the company more opportunities to show the ads that generate most of its revenue, which is expected to exceed $US49 billion this year. Personal information from Google Plus, a social networking service started last year to compete with Facebook, has been featured in Google's main search results since January. Ultimately, Google hopes to know enough about each of its users so it can answer their questions with the precision and insight of the artificial intelligence that so far has been the stuff of science fiction. "The destiny of search is to become that perfect Star Trek computer," Singhal said. In another step toward that goal, Google said on Wednesday in the US that it will soon be releasing an improved version of its voice-powered search application for Apple's iPhone and iPad. Google released the tool last month on its Nexus 7 tablet computer and other devices running on the latest version of its Android mobile operation system. The version for Apple's operating system, expected within a week, will be an alternative to Siri, the built-in virtual assistant on the iPhone 4S.
