Nairaland GeneralMy Analysis Of The Isreali Palestinian War By Philip Onyia by phillsayo(op): 2:38pm On Mar 29, 2017
Why are Israel and the Palestinians fighting over Gaza?
Israelis and Arabs have been fighting over Gaza on and off, for decades. It's part of the wider Arab Israeli conflict.

After World War II and the Holocaust in which six million Jewish people were killed, more Jewish people wanted their own country. They were given a large part of Palestine, which they considered their traditional home but the Arabs who already lived there and in neighbouring countries felt that was unfair and didn't accept the new country.

In 1948, the two sides went to war. When it ended, Gaza was controlled by Egypt and another area, the West Bank, by Jordan. They contained thousands of Palestinians who fled what was now the new Jewish home, Israel. Israel's recognition A history of the Gaza conflict Click here to see where Israel is... But then, in 1967, after another war, Israel occupied these Palestinian areas and Israeli troops stayed there for years. Israelis hoped they might exchange the land they won for Arab countries recognising Israel's right to exist and an end to the fighting. Israel finally left Gaza in 2005 but soon after, a group called Hamas won elections and took control there.

Much of the world calls Hamas a terrorist organisation. It refuses to recognise Israel as a country and wants Palestinians to be able to return to their old home - and will use violence to achieve its aims. Since then, Israel has held Gaza under a blockade, which means it controls its borders and limits who can get in and out. Life for the many of the 1.5 million Palestinians who live in the Gaza Strip is difficult. Israel controls its coastline and all the entry and exit crossings into Israel. There is another crossing point into Egypt.

There is no working airport. Because access is so restricted, not many goods get into or out of Gaza. Food is allowed in, but aid agencies say families are not eating as much meat or fresh vegetables and fruit as they used to.

There are often power cuts. Large numbers of people are unemployed because businesses can get very few of their products out of Gaza to sell, and people don't have much money to buy things.

During the 1948 and 1967 wars hundreds of thousands of Palestinians left, or were forced out of, their homes and moved to neighbouring countries to become refugees. More than 4.6 million Palestinians are refugees and their descendants, many living in camps in the West Bank, Gaza Strip, Syria, Jordan and Lebanon. They get help from the United Nations.

Violence in Gaza Though the Palestinians don't have an army, rockets are regularly fired from Gaza into Israel. Israelis living in border towns are used to having to take shelter and adapting their lives to deal with the rockets.

In the years since Israel withdrew its troops in 2005, Gaza has seen several Israeli offensives. Israel says these were aimed at putting a stop to rocket fire. In 2008, Israel sent soldiers into Gaza. An estimated 1,300 people, many of them civilians, were killed in Gaza before a ceasefire was declared; 13 Israeli soldiers also died.

In 2012, at least 167 Palestinians and six Israelis were killed during an Israeli operation. After eight days a ceasefire was declared with both sides promising to stop attacks.

Most recently in July 2014, authorities said over 2,200 people were killed - most of them Palestinians - and many more injured, during 50 days of violence. A ceasefire was agreed between Israel and Hamas on 26 August. Peace Process Other countries, particularly America, have worked hard to settle the fighting between the Arabs and Israelis but so far nothing has worked.

Many people want Gaza and the West Bank to be turned into a new country - Palestine. Israel won't agree to this unless it feels safe - and Hamas accepts its right to exist. The other sticking points are what will happen to Israelis who've settled in the West Bank, who will run Jerusalem and what will happen to the Palestinian refugees.
Nairaland GeneralAstrology: Is It Scientific ? by phillsayo(op): 2:14pm On Mar 29, 2017
Horoscope In some ways, astrology may seem scientific. It uses scientific knowledge about heavenly bodies, as well as scientific sounding tools, like star charts. Some people use astrology to generate expectations about future events and people's personalities, much as scientific ideas generate expectations. And some claim that astrology is supported by evidence — the experiences of people who feel that astrology has worked for them. But even with these trappings of science, is astrology really a scientific way to answer questions?

Here we'll use the Science Checklist to evaluate one way in which astrology is commonly used. See if you think it qualifies as scientific! Focuses on the natural world? Astrology's basic premise is that heavenly bodies — the sun, moon, planets, and constellations — have influence over or are correlated with earthly events. Aims to explain the natural world? Astrology uses a set of rules about the relative positions and movements of heavenly bodies to generate predictions and explanations for events on Earth and human personality traits. For example, some forms of astrology predict that a person born just after the spring equinox is particularly likely to become an entrepreneur. Uses testable ideas? Some expectations generated by astrology are so general that any outcome could be interpreted as fitting the expectations; if treated this way, astrology is not testable. However, some have used astrology to generate very specific expectations that could be verified against outcomes in the natural world. For example, according to astrology, one's zodiac sign impacts one's ability to command respect and authority. Since these traits are important in politics, we might expect that if astrology really explained people's personalities, scientists would be more likely to have zodiac signs that astrologers describe as "favorable" towards science.

1. If used to generate specific expectations like this one, astrological ideas are testable. Relies on evidence? In the few cases where astrology has been used to generate testable expectations and the results were examined in a careful study, the evidence did not support the validity of astrological ideas.

2. This experience is common in science — scientists often test ideas that turn out to be wrong. However, one of the hallmarks of science is that ideas are modified when warranted by the evidence. Astrology has not changed its ideas in response to contradictory evidence. Newspaper horoscope Many astrological predictions appear in newspapers — not in places where they will be scrutinized by the scientific community.Involves the scientific community? Sharing one's findings and critically evaluating the results of others are not integral parts of practicing astrology. An astrologer can go his or her entire career and not present findings at a scientific meeting or publish a single article. When astrologers do publish, these articles are not usually peer-reviewed or published in places where they will be critically scrutinized by the scientific community. Leads to ongoing research? Scientific studies involving astrology have stopped after attempting and failing to establish the validity of astrological ideas. So far, there are no documented cases of astrology contributing to a new scientific discovery. Researchers behave scientifically? Scientists don't wait for others to do the research to support or contradict the ideas they propose. Instead, they strive to test their ideas, try to come up with counterarguments and alternative hypotheses, and ultimately, give up ideas when warranted by the evidence.

Astrologers, on the other hand, do not seem to rigorously examine the astrological ideas they accept. As reflected by the minimal level of research in the field, they rarely try to test their arguments in fair ways. In addition, the astrological community largely ignores evidence that contradicts its ideas. Now it's up to you. Is astrology science?
CrimeEgyptian Court Sentences Man To Death For killing Christian by phillsayo(op):
An Egyptian court sentenced a Muslim man to death on Thursday for murdering a Christian for selling alcohol, security and judicial officials said.

The court in the Mediterranean city of Alexandria issued its sentence after receiving approval from the mufti, the official interpreter of Islamic law whose role is advisory.

The verdict can be appealed.

Adel Abu al-Nur el-Sayed, 50, was accused of killing 61-year-old Youssef Lamei, a Coptic Christian, on January 2 in Alexandria.

Sayed had walked up to Lamei as he sat outside his liquor store and slit his throat, the victim's son Tony Youssef, who witnessed the murder, told AFP.

Sayed, who sports a long beard in the manner of Muslim fundamentalists, later told the court that he would kill all alcohol sellers if he could, judicial sources said.

Consumption of alcohol is forbidden in Islam.

Sayed was present in court on Thursday, according to a security official.

The Coptic minority has been on edge after a series of attacks.

On December 11, asuicide bombing claimed by the Islamic State group struck a Cairo church during aservice, killing 29 people.

The group's Egypt branch said in December it would continue attacks against "every infidel and apostate in Egypt, and everywhere".

The jihadists had mostly targeted Egypt's security forces in the north of the Sinai Peninsula since the army overthrew Islamist president Mohamed Morsi in 2013.

Nairaland GeneralWikileaks Releases Details On CIA Hacking Tools by phillsayo(op): 10:47pm On Mar 09, 2017
WikiLeaks revealed on Tuesday that it has obtained thousands of files allegedly originating from a high-security network of the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). The leak, dubbed “Vault 7,” apparently exposes the CIA’s vast hacking capabilities.

WikiLeaks said the files come from the CIA’s Center for Cyber Intelligence (CCI) in Langley, Virginia, and they have been circulating among former U.S. government hackers and contractors. One of these individuals provided the data to the whistleblower organization, which has called it “the largest intelligence publication in history.”

According to WikiLeaks, the files, dated between 2013 and 2016, include malware and exploits targeting the products of several major tech companies, including Apple, Google, Microsoft and Samsung. The leaked tools can allegedly be used to hack mobile devices, desktop computers, routers, smart TVs and other types of systems.

These pieces of software are said to have been developed by the CCI’s Engineering Development Group (EDG). WikiLeaks said the EDG develops, tests and provides support for backdoors, exploits, Trojans, viruses and other types of malware used by the CIA.

In addition to hacking tools developed by its own people, the agency allegedly obtained tools from British intelligence agencies (GCHQ and MI5), the NSA, the FBI and cyber arms contractors. For instance, the agency is said to have collaborated with MI5 on the development of a tool designed for spying on people through Samsung smart TVs.

The CIA allegedly has dozens of zero day exploits designed for targeting devices running Android, iOS, Windows, OS X and Linux. WikiLeaks claims some of these tools even allow the agency to bypass the encryption of secure messaging apps such as Signal, WhatsApp, and Telegram.

However, this does not necessarily mean these applications have been compromised –an attacker who has root access to a mobile device can often access messages exchanged via secure IM apps without the need to break the encryption.

WikiLeaks will not release the tools and exploits “until a consensus emerges on the technical and political nature of the CIA's program and how such 'weapons' should analyzed, disarmed and published.”

The files also appear to show that the CIA has developed tools designed for targeting the control systems of modern vehicles, multi-platform malware, and threats that add themselves to CDs and DVDs in order to jump air gaps.

Following the Edward Snowden leaks, the U.S. government has promised to disclose serious vulnerabilities that represent a high risk or affect a product that is widespread in critical infrastructure. If the files obtained by WikiLeaks are genuine, the CIA breached that commitment.

FamilyRe: Northern Man Marries An Underaged Girl (Photos) by phillsayo(m): 11:41am On Mar 08, 2017
Yesterday, when I saw the picture of a little girl being married off to one man in the North, I became weak. I looked again to see if it were animals that attended the wedding. When I discovered they were humans, I became weaker. Then I began to imagine a lot of things. That night, the man will place the girl on the bed and order her to perform some things on him or he performs some things on her. The girl would cry and he would either pet her or order her to keep quiet and do her marital obligation in peace, that soon she will get used to it or perhaps begin to enjoy it in 7 years time. And the next morning, to atone his conscience (if he has any), he will put the girl-wife in school so that he gives her pencil by day and penis by night, education by day and ejaculation by night. Let me assume those things do not happen, that the marriage was only to book the girl down for future purpose. You take away the childhood of the girl-child and entangle her with a man she has no definite affection, you emburden her with the psyche of a wife. This troubles me, I hope it troubles everybody. Paedophile! You validate your debauchery with religion or customs? Paedophile! You eye that girl that comes to play with your daughter, so that when nobody is around, you tell her to pull your beards so that soon, she will begin to pull something else. Paedophile! When you hear the voice of that little girl that passes your street, your ears stretch like that of a rabbit, your eyes bulge like a owl and you begin to scheme. Are paedophiles not meant to be in the bush together with beasts of their kind?

Nairaland GeneralLatin Americans Hit The Street To Stike On International Women's Day by phillsayo(op): 8:54am On Mar 08, 2017
https://c1.staticflickr.com/3/2876/33094085512_e7004dae9b.jpg

Latin America is expecting a rush of street actions and activist initiatives on Wednesday, following promises by an array of civic groups to join a labor strike on International Women's Day. Organizers expect the work stoppages and protests to spread like two movements last October, #VivasNosQueremos (We Want Ourselves Alive) and #NiUnaMenos (Not One Less).

The protests last year started in Argentina in response to a series of brutal femicides that took place weeks earlier in different parts of the country. These demonstrations quickly spread to other parts of the region. Within days, there were protests in cities across Chile, Uruguay, Peru, Bolivia, and Mexico, with demonstrators chanting the same slogans, and campaigning on the same issues.

This year, numerous organizations throughout the region, both online and offline, have waged public-education initiatives and invited people to planned demonstrations, also asking women to join an international strike.

This Wednesday, people across Latin America will protest the fact that their region has some of the highest rates of femicide in the world. In Uruguay, for example, protesters are denouncing state officials’ failure to institute better protections for women, and speaking out against the rise of religious groups and the invisibility of populations of African descent:

In Argentina, the group Emergente will be publishing updates about the strike and street protests on Facebook and Twitter. On Tuesday, Emergente reported that some demonstrations kicked off early, beginning with protests staged by activists demanding more visibility and respect for the LGBTQ community.

In Paraguay, the civic-media organization TEDIC is joining the strike. In a statement published online, the group argued that violence against women can occur on the Internet, where it's not a given that technology automatically empowers women, the organization said:
Science/TechnologyNew Malware Will Soon Start "Atombombing" U.S. Banks by phillsayo(op): 8:10am On Mar 08, 2017
New Dridex 4 Banking Malware With AtomBombing Code Injection is Expected to be Used Against U.S. Banks

A new version of the Dridex banking malware has been detected targeting European banks, and is expected to be used against U.S. financial institutions in the coming months. Dridex 4 incorporates the usual range of software improvements that we have come to expect from professionally maintained malware -- but it is also the first major malware to have adopted the new code injection technique known as 'AtomBombing'.

AtomBombing was described by researchers at enSilo in October 2016. It is so named because of its use of Windows' atom tables -- read/writable stores of data that can be used by multiple applications. Malicious code can be written to the atom tables, and then retrieved and injected into executable memory space.

This process does not require any exploit against Windows since it makes use of a feature provided by Windows. Ultimately, it is simply a new code injection technique likely to by-pass existing AV and NGAV detections.

Dridex 4 was discovered by IBM X-Force in early February. Interestingly, it doesn't implement AtomBombing exactly as described by enSilo. "In our analysis of the new Dridex v4 release," says IBM, "we discovered that the malware's authors have devised their own injection method, using the first step of the AtomBombing technique. They use the atom tables and NtQueueAPCThread to copy a payload and an import table into a RW memory space in the target process. But they only went halfway - they used the AtomBombing technique for the writing of the payload, then used a different method to achieve execution permissions, and for the execution itself."

Since enSilo's original description of the technique, malware defenders will have been developing means to detect it. Dridex 4 hopes to bypass these current detections by using a modified method of AtomBombing. "Malware writers modify their software frequently as part of the cat-and-mouse game played between attackers and defenders," explains F-Secure's Andy Patel. "It doesn't surprise me that the authors of Dridex pulled enSilo's research into their new version so rapidly -- it's a perfect application for that hooking technique. What's even more interesting is that they modified it themselves, thus avoiding any detection techniques that might have been pre-emptively created based on enSilo's findings."

In other words, Dridex 4 was a threat only for so long as it remained undetected. Now that it has been detected and analyzed by IBM, users with fully maintained mainstream anti-malware defenses will rapidly be protected -- until the next new technique. "Defenders will now modify their detection approaches to catch the new techniques found in Dridex, and the cycle will continue," explains Patel.

This disinclination to describe Dridex and AtomBombing as a dangerous new game-changer is echoed by Luis Corrons, technical director at PandaLabs. "The way the attack is performed to inject code is new, although... malware has used malware injection techniques for a long time, for instance you can see that in many ransomware families." It is, he said, "just another technique to be used by malware once it is already in the victim's computer. It is easy to implement, so we'll see it in some other malware attacks; however, from my personal opinion it is not something we have to worry about."

It should be noted that the enSilo researcher who discovered AtomBombing, Tal Lieberman, is not convinced that the Dridex method is purely for evasion. "This adaptation actually simplifies the technique we described. Most likely, the malware authors decided to forego sophistication as they believed that their version is stealthy enough also without increased evasion measures."

Although Dridex is not 'non-malware', it is still "part of the growing trend towards fileless malware," he added, "as that allows the malware to protect itself from the prying eyes of security researchers. The reason is that an executable, once caught by a security solution, is uploaded to the cloud for analysis by security vendors and other security researchers."

The primary threat from Dridex 4 consequently occurred while it was still unknown. The authors knew this, and included improvements to its anti-research and anti-AV capabilities. "In this release," comment the IBM researchers, "we noted that special attention was given to dodging antivirus (AV) products and hindering research by adopting a series of enhanced anti-research and anti-AV capabilities."

Two upgrades given special note by IBM include enhanced encryption, and an updated persistence mechanism. Firstly, it uses a modified naming algorithm. "In the new version, while the same variables are still being used to generate [MD5] hashes, the sequence has changed to shuffle things around and prevent detection by automated checks."

Secondly, Dridex 4 has similarly modified its configuration file encryption. "Overall, Dridex continues to use the same multilayered approach it used in v3 variants, but it has changed and enhanced the encryption while still relying heavily on the RC4 cipher."

The persistence mechanism has been changed. Earlier versions used 'invisibility'. The DLL would only get written to disk with a registry value at shutdown. The new version has adopted a "robustness-over-stealth approach for its persistence mechanism." An executable is now copied, explains IBM, "from system32 into a different directory and Dridex's DLL is placed in that same directory. The malicious DLL mimics a legitimate DLL that's loaded by the executable."

Overall, perhaps the greatest significance of Dridex 4 is not the inclusion of AtomBombing per se, but the speed with which new techniques are incorporated into major malware. It seems that Andy Patel is somewhat surprised that it happened at all. "As for banking trojans in general, we were assuming they'd continue to lose marketshare as banks improved their back end anti-fraud algorithms."
Science/TechnologyScientists Store An Operating System, A Movie And A Computer Virus On DNA by phillsayo(op): 9:49pm On Mar 07, 2017
Do you know — 1 Gram of DNA can store 1,000,000,000 Terabyte of Data for 1000+ Years.

Just last year, Microsoftpurchased 10 Million strands of synthetic DNA from San Francisco DNA synthesis startup called Twist Bioscience and collaborated with researchers from the University of Washington to focus on usingDNA as a data storage medium.

However, in the latestexperiments, a pair of researchers from Columbia University and the New YorkGenome Center(NYGC) have come up with a new technique to store massive amounts of data on DNA,and the results are marvelous.

The duo successfully stored around 2mb in data, encodinga total number of six files, which include:

A full computer operating system An 1895 French movie "Arrival of a Train at La Ciotat" A $50 Amazon giftcard A computervirus A Pioneer plaque A 1948 studyby information theorist Claude Shannon

The new research, which comes courtesy of Yaniv Erlich and Dina Zielinski, has been published in the journal Science.

ButHow Did the ResearchersStore Digital Data on DNA?

Calling their process a "DNA Fountain," the researchers first compressed all the data into a single masterarchive and split it into short strings of binary digits, made up of ones and zeros.

Next, the duo used an "erasure-correcting algorithm called fountain codes"to randomly packaged the strings into droplets. Each droplet contains a barcode in the sequence thathelped the researchers reassembling the file.

The researchers then "mapped the ones and zeros in each droplettothe four nucleotide bases in DNA: A, G, Cand T," and ended up with a digital list of 72,000 DNA strands thatcontained the encoded data.

$99 - Microbial Genome Seq

Lib Prep+Seq, 50x+ coverage seqwell.com/products/plexwell

High-quality library prep and sequencing, Fast Turnaround, Volume Discounts

This code was then sent in a text file to Twist Biosciences, the same DNA synthesis startup from which Microsoft purchased 10 Million strands of synthetic DNA last year, thatthen turned that digital information into biological DNA.

"Twoweeks later, they received a vial holding a speck of DNA molecules. To retrieve theirfiles, theyused modern sequencing technology to read the DNA strands, followed by software to translate the genetic code back into binary. They recovered their files with zero errors," the journal reads.

'Highest-DensityData-Storage Device Ever Created'

The researchers believe that DNA is the perfect storage medium – as it is ultra-compact and can last hundreds of thousands of years if kept cool and dry–and suggests this is the "highest-density data-storage device ever created."

Since the digital universe is large and by 2020 containing nearly as many digital bits as there are stars in the universe, the data will reach 44 zettabytes or 44 trillion gigabytes.

So,DNA data storage could help big organizations store an enormous amountof information in a way that one can still be able toread it in a hundred years.

However, cost is still an issue. The researchers spent around $7,000 to synthesize the 2MB of data and another $2,000 to read that data.

However, with the time this will change,so do not expect this technique to go mainstream anytime soon.

Science/TechnologyFacebook ‘tests Dislike Button’ For The First Time In Messenger App by phillsayo(op): 1:26pm On Mar 07, 2017
Facebook is testing a ‘Dislike’ button for the first time ever – after a decade of users begging Mark Zuckerberg to introduce one.

It’s Facebook’s most-requested feature –but one that the company has repeatedly said it won’t do.

At present, the new thumbs down button not in the main Facebook app, but in Messenger, in a test with a small group of users, TechCrunch reports.

It’s part of a test of a range of emoji icons, called Messenger Reactions –including classic happy faces, crying faces and LOL emoji.

Facebook says it hopes that people might use the icon as a quick way to say, ‘No’ –rather than using it like everyone really WANTS to use a Dislike button, by covering annoying posts in hundreds of Dislikes.

Facebook says, ‘We’re always testing ways to make Messenger more fun and engaging. This is a small test where we enable people to share an emoji that best represents their feelings on a message.

Sure deos. Routing is secure, so are transmitted packets. But nothing can be 100 percent in tech though.
ComputersSunstone Creates First Solar-powered IP Systems by phillsayo(op): 1:22am On Mar 07, 2017
Sunstone IP Systems Limited, a fast-growing security systems integrator, has designed a patent-pending Solar IP CCTV System (SICS), which delivers high quality and high definition (HD) surveillance in remote locations.

SICS was designed in response to the challenge of delivering wireless surveillance in remote and corrosive environments combined with extreme weather conditions to enable seamless HD monitoring for high security operations across a wide geographic area, such as oilfields. Typically, such environments lack fixed buildings, power and connectivity, so it was integral that SICS was designed to be completely standalone, easily transportable and rapidly deployed.

Completely self-sustaining, SICS uses a 500w combination of ruggedised solar panels, which were custom engineered for optimum solar angles in a range of global locations. The energy from the sun is harvested from the panels and stored in a proprietary harsh environment battery system, which is designed to withstand deep cycling along with extremely high and low temperatures. The power generated from the solar and battery system can fuel any type of IP camera system, wireless access control, telecommunications or LED lighting system.

In addition, SICS is fitted with a system controller, which enables real-time monitoring of all aspects of the system, including solar and battery performance, alongside a GPS location alert on system threats, such as extreme temperature or snow build up. The solar controller is vital to the effective operation of SICS, providing security operatives with diagnostic information and the ability to completely monitor the system remotely.

Sunstone works in partnership with its customers to deliver robust, high quality, cost saving solutions underpinned by outstanding technical support. Their solutions are fully scalable to ensure they will continue to meet the future needs of any business and security operation.

Commenting, Paul Schelhaas, Chief Executive Officer, Sunstone IP Systems, said: “The requirement for security does not always coincide with the availability of electricity and communication systems to relay footage to where it is needed. SICS represents a true industry breakthrough in delivering high quality HD surveillance to remote and harsh locations.”
Foreign AffairsRussian Hackers Extort Money From Trump's Critics by phillsayo(op): 8:49pm On Mar 06, 2017
Bloomberg finds out there have been new attacks on America from Russian hackers: this time Trump’s critics are the targets. Some of the victims paid up to $150 thousand to the hackers for non-disclosure of confidential information they had obtained.

Russian hackers conducted a series of attacks on American liberal organizations, demanding a ransom for non-disclosure of confidential information they had obtained through hacking their e-mails and networking applications like SharePoint that allows sharing Microsoft Office files, Bloomberg reported citing sources with information from the FBI and private security companies.

According to the agency, Center for American Progress (Washington think tank) turned out to be one of the victims. The center is known for its severe criticism of US President Donald Trump and urges to make a thorough investigation of the ties his close associates may have with some Russian officials.

There is an example in Bloomberg’s story where the hackers were extorting a ransom from a nonprofit organization that had been discussing with a sponsor the possibilities of using grants to recover some of the expenses to the protesters against Trump’s policy, judging by the organization’s files.

In some of the cases, the hackers did get the ransoms that ranged from $30 thousand to $150 thousand. According to a Bloomberg’s source, the money was paid in bitcoins.

The FBI refused to comment on the new cyberattacks covered by Bloomberg. However, the agency's experts pointed out that the methods the unknown hackers used were reminiscent of those employed by the Cozy Bear group that had hacked the Democrats’ computer networks on the eve of the US 2016 presidential election. The group is assumed to have some links with Russian special services.
SportsRussian MP Wants To Legalise Football Hooliganism And ‘make It A Sport’ by phillsayo(op): 8:03pm On Mar 06, 2017
A Russian MP has proposed a solution to the country’s problems with hardcore football violence – legalising it, and inviting an audience.

During last year’s European Championship, masked gangs of Russian supporters fought other fans in the street – inspiring Russian MP Igor Lebedev to say, ‘Well done, lads, keep it up!’

Now Lebedev has proposed the idea of turning the violence into organised bouts – with 20 fighters on each side, unarmed.

Lebedev describes the new sport as ‘draka’ – the Russian word for fight.

Lebedev says it ‘could turn fans’ aggression in a peaceful direction’, according to ABC.

In a statement on the website of the nationalist LDPR part, he said, ‘Russia would be a pioneer in a new sport.

‘English fans arrive, for example, and start picking fights. And they get the answer – challenge accepted. A meeting in a stadium at a set time.’
Crime#weird: Woman, 99, Has Dream Of Being Arrested Come True by phillsayo(op): 7:34pm On Mar 06, 2017
Police in the Netherlands have helped a 99-year-old woman's dream come true… by letting her spend time in a jail cell.

Annie had told an officer that one of her final wishes was experiencing prison from an inmate's perspective.

Despite lacking the criminal requirements to get locked up, police in Nijmegen were happy to help - and the pensioner was seen beaming as she was put in a cell.

To add a little authenticity to proceedings, Annie was also handcuffed for her brief time in the clink.

On Facebook, the force described it as "a day to remember".

Locals have praised the police for helping Annie tick the item off her rather unusual bucket list.

Hopefully, any other wild life ambitions will keep her on the right side of the law.

Protecting yourself on the internet

Using computers and similar devices to go online has made everyday activities such as shopping, banking, paying bills and keeping in touch fast and easy … anytime, anywhere. There are, however, a number of risks associated with going online –some general and some specific to the respective activities that you carry out. There are a number of sensible and simple measures which you need to take in order to protect yourself against these risks, which include identity theft, criminals stealing your personal and financial data to defraud you or empty your bank account. The precautions are as simple as choosing safe passwords and ensuring you have adequate antivirus/antispyware installed, to learning how to distinguish between genuine and fraudulent websites and emails.

In this thread you will find valuable advice on how to protect yourself, and what to do if you are affected.

Avoid ratting. Remote acess trojans

You use your computer or mobile device for many everyday private or confidential tasks, which is why it is essential to take precautions to protect it from viruses and spyware. One type of spyware becoming increasingly common is known as a RAT (Remote Access Trojan), which criminals can use to access your computer or mobile device to take control of it to obtain your private information or spy on you. This is known as ratting.

How to Avoid Ratting

Ensure you have effective and updated antivirus/antispyware software and firewall running whenever your computer or mobile device is switched on.
Do not be tempted to download programs or apps that are not from a trusted source, as they could contain RATs and other malware.
Download updates to your programs and apps when prompted to do so … they often include security fixes.

Take great care about which links you click on in emails – they may be phishing.
Take great care about opening attachments in emails, even if they seem to be from people you know.
Avoid suspicious website and torrent downloading. Many such downloads are not only against the law but also a major gateway for this type of cyber-attack.
Cover your webcam when not in use, whether it is a built-in or clip-on device.

Avoid copycat websites.

Copycat websites are those which offer services from government departments or local government, but are not the official site and charge an often substantial premium for those services, often with no tangible benefit to the customer. They achieve this by using website tools to achieve high positions in search engines such as Google, often ranking them higher than the official site and making it appear as though they are ‘official’ or ‘authorised’. They also have website addresses designed to confuse with the official site, and often feature a similar look and feel and brand design.

How to Search and Buy Official Services Safely.

Do not automatically opt to use the first website(s) you find in a search engine, even if the address seems authentic and you are in a hurry. Instead, take time to look for the official website.
For Nigerians you can normally tell that site is official if it ends in ‘.gov.ng’, it has the department, agency or council’s authentic logo and contact details and the prices are cheaper.
If you do opt to use an unofficial site to purchase official services, make sure that the payment page is secure by checking that the address begins with ‘https://’ (the ‘s’ is short for ‘secure’) and there is a locked padlock in the browser window.

If you think you have been misled into overpaying by using an unofficial site:

Contact the site to insist on a refund, saying you think you were misled.
Contact the relevant government department or agency or local government organisation and report the copycat site..

Mobile banking.

Mobile banking – using banking apps or mobile websites on smartphones and tablets – is growing rapidly in popularity as people realise the benefits of the convenience of checking accounts, transferring money and making payments from the comfort of their armchair or whilst out and about. The major banks invest heavily in security to make your mobile banking experience safe and secure. However, it is your responsibility to ensure that you are using mobile banking responsibly to protect yourself and your finances.

Safe mobile banking

Make sure your smartphone or tablet is always protected with a PIN which is difficult to guess.
Do not reveal your PIN to anybody, nor write it or store it where it can be found. Like online banking from a computer, choose, use and protect passwords and memorable words with great care.
Take care not to leave your device unattended, or left or stored in an insecure place. Download a tracking app which allows you to erase your data remotely, or enable this feature if already on your device.
Keep the banking and other apps on your device regularly updated. Always log out of your banking app or mobile website when you have finished using it.
Closing the app or web page or turning off your device may not be sufficient.
Do not use unsecured Wi-Fi networks for banking, purchases or checking your emails. In public places, it is very difficult to tell if a hotspot is secure or not, so it is always best not so use it. It is better to use a 3G or 4G internet connection, even if it is slower to do so.
Take care when downloading apps: make sure that they are from an authorised store and check reviews and recommendations.
There are thousands of malicious banking apps circulating, especially for Android devices, even downloadable from official app stores.
Download, use and keep updated one of the many reputable internet security apps for your device.
Check your device’s security settings to ensure maximum protection.
Check that your bank's mobile app has been validated for its security.
Look on their website for their own published statement on how they have done this. Alternatively, check other app users’ views by searching online.
Read your bank's terms and conditions for mobile banking. Be sure you know what your responsibilities are, and those of your bank.
On the app, find and use the option for a text message to be sent every time a transaction occurs on your account.
This will notify you of fraudulent transactions as soon as they happen.
Beware of emails, texts or phone calls claiming to be from your bank or the police claiming there is a problem with your account and requesting your login or other confidential details. Your bank or other authentic organisation would never request these details.

If you are the victim of an actual or attempted fraud

Contact your bank immediately

Social engineering.

When talking about online safety and security, ‘social engineering’ means the act of manipulating or tricking people into certain actions including divulging personal or financial information … a kind of confidence trick. Social engineering exploits human nature and often plays on victims’ willingness to be helpful, or please others. It is a factor in many types of fraud.

How to Avoid Social Engineering Attacks

Never reveal personal or financial data including usernames, passwords, PINs, or ID numbers.
Be very careful that people or organisations to whom you are supplying payment card information are genuine, and then never reveal passwords. Remember that a bank or other reputable organisation will never ask you for your password via email or phone call.
If you receive a phone call requesting confidential information, verify it is authentic by asking for a full and correct spelling of the person’s name and a call back number.
If you are asked by a caller to cut off the call and phone your bank or card provider, call the number on your bank statement or other document from your bank or on the back of your card but be sure to use another phone from the one you received the call on.
If you cannot access another phone, be sure to hang up for at least five " before you dial out, or call a friend (whose voice you recognise) before making another call. Do not open email attachments from unknown sources.
Do not readily click on links in emails from unknown sources. Instead, roll your mouse pointer over the link to reveal its true destination, displayed in the bottom left corner of your screen.
Beware if this is different from what is displayed in the text of the link from the email. Do not attach external storage devices or insert CD-ROMs/DVD-ROMs into your computer if you are not certain of the source, or just because you are curious about their contents.
