Nigerians from different walks of live on Friday in Abuja expressed delight at the adoption of President Goodluck Jonathan by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as its sole candidate for 2015 presidential election. The National Executive Committee (NEC) of the party rose from its meeting on Thursday with a unamimous decison to endorse the president’s adoption by various organs of the party. A cross section of them told the News Agency of Nigeeria (NAN) that the development had foreclosed the controversy around Jonathan’s capacity to represent the party for another four years. They also said his selection had the propensity to reduce the tension within the party over the position. Mr Gbenga Okunola, a doctoral student of Political Science from the Benue State University, said the action was envisaged, adding that “this is the practice in even most advanced democracies around the world”. According to Okunola, President Jonathan deserves to be given “first offer of refusal” after his first tenure. “One thing we must understand is that the PDP is begining to learn fast from these advanced democracies. “No responsible party would expose its member that has the opportunity to clinch victory in an election to redicule. Jonathan remains a good product for the party,” he said. Okunala further said that the development was made more easier because of the exemplary firm structure the party had built over time. “It is not like most parties in the country where their national, states leaderships and all other caucauses seemto have serious issues in deciding in situation like this. “I have seen that for PDP, once the central leadership decides on anything, it flows to base almost immediately. Therefore I see this as the best gift for Jonathan since joining politics,” Okunola said. On his part, Mr Chima Okafor, a public analyst, said the development would help to difuse the insecurity in the country. “Joanthan is now put in the better stead to deliver the deliverables to the country now and this includes the capacity to deliver back the country to the peolple from the hands of the evil ones. “Jonathan has been under tension himself as to whether he would be allowed to continue or not; this decision for me requires the support of all. “The problem of our nation has been that of poor political leadership as a result of absence of continuity of policies and projects, I think this would help the system,” he said. Alhaji Doki Garba, a social crusader, said the PDP had always shown direction for the rest parties, adding that there was nothing wrong in the party adopting Jonathan as its presidential candidate because he was not a fresher. “He is just about to conclude his first term; it is only fair that the leadership of the party allows him to complete the second term for the party. “The party may have realised that it is even dangerous to bring in a totally fresh candidate when the president is willing to go on. “This happens everywhere, including the United States that we always seek political directions from,” he said “If the larger population is satisfied with the entire procedure leading to Jonathan’s adoption, so be it,” he said. Garba, however, said “the party must grow up from mediocrity to a serious organisation with a global recognision like its counterparts around the world”. Also, Mrs Alice Agube, a market woman, said “Jonathan is our man or do you have a better candidate? According to her, the PDP is a party that listens to the cry of the people, especially women and have through the leadership provided by Jonathan, transformed most sector of the economy substantially. “The decision to adopt the president spurs from the public outcry for him to re-contest and I am happy when the news came yesterday,” she said. http://dailyindependentnig.com/2014/09/2015-non-pdp-members-hail-adoption-jonathan/ |
During a fierce battle with Boko Haram insurgents for the strategic town of Konduga in Borno State, the Nigerian military said yesterday that it captured one of the sect’s top commanders and killed several others. The revelation by the military coincided with a damning report released by Amnesty International (AI) yesterday exposing the alleged torture methods and systemic human rights abuses perpetrated by the Nigeria Police Force and military. Konduga has been the target of multiple attacks in the last one week owing to its proximity to Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, which the Islamist sect has been attempting to capture in its bid to establish an Islamic Caliphate. But Nigerian troops have consistently repelled the attacks by the sect, resulting in the death of hundreds of the insurgents in recent days. This was confirmed yesterday by the Director of Defence Information (DDI), Major-General Chris Olukolade, in response to THISDAY inquiries on the ongoing military operations in the North-east. According to Olukolade, the “seriously wounded high-ranking terrorist leader is being treated in a military medical facility after he was captured in the operations at Konduga”. “He was among those captured yesterday (Wednesday) while over 60 of his fighters died during the series of attacks they launched to gain access to Konduga and its suburbs,” he added. The defence spokesman also disclosed that some of the additional weapons that were recovered from the terrorists including 24 rifles, five rocket-propelled grenade tubes, two machine guns, and one anti-aircraft gun as well as a Ford Ranger vehicle. He said another Ford Ranger vehicle was destroyed. He also explained that in Benishek, Borno State, where troops fought through an ambush yesterday, four motorcycles of the terrorists were recovered, adding that one soldier was killed during the attack, while four others who were wounded are receiving treatment. In another statement on the battle for Konduga, the Director of Army Public Relations, Brigadier-General Olajide Laleye, said: “In the on-going operations to dislodge Boko Haram terrorists from the North-east, gallant troops of the Nigerian Army conducted offensive operations between 4 pm and 8 pm yesterday (Wednesday, September 17) in the Konduga area of Borno State, killing over 60 Boko Haram terrorists.” He said the Nigerian Army did not suffer any casualty in the operation, while the “morale of the troops remains very high”. http://www.thisdaylive.com/articles/military-captures-boko-haram-commander-in-konduga/189412/ |

Members of the National Executive Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party have adopted President Goodluck Jonathan as the party’s sole presidential candidate for the 2015 election. This decision was taken few minutes ago at the ongoing meeting of the body which is being held at the party’s national headquarters, Abuja on Thursday. Members of the NEC took the decision after various organs of the party said that they had endorsed the President during their meetings which they said were held on Wednesday. National Chairman of the party, Adamu Mua’zu led other members of the party’s National Working Committee to the meeting. President Jonathan, his deputy, Namadi Sambo; Senate President, David Mark; his deputy, Ike Ekweremadu and the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Emeka Ihedioha were among those present at the meeting. It was also attended by majority of the governors, including the Governor of Jigawa State, Sule Lamido. The governor is believed to be nursing presidential ambition.
