Hello everyone! I’m thinking of building a granny flat in my backyard and I’ve got a couple or so of questions to ask. I hope you’ll help me out! 

-are Granny Flats custom-built or are they generally kit-homes?
-does it have to be attached to the main house or can it be built separately?
-Do I have to get approval from the local council to have a granny flat built on my property? If yes, how long does that usually take?
-can I built two-storey flats or do they necessarily have to be one-storey units only?

• Hi granny flats are wonderful additions to homes and what’s more is that you can have them rented out. That will mean additional means of income for you and your family.
You can have a granny flat or secondary dwelling built on your backyard and use it for a number of reasons. You can have your in-laws or old family members live there, you can have it rented out, you can transform as a home office or you can turn it into your own workshop. If you don’t have an attic you can keep stuff you don’t use anymore there too.
Getting a granny flat will depend a lot on what use you have for it. Maybe you want your old folks stay there? Maybe you want to have extra income and rent it out to college students. Whatever the reason is, building a granny flat is an investment.
Well, having a granny flat built would be a good idea if you’re planning on letting your old folks live with you. Both of you can keep your privacy and still see each other a lot anytime you want.
Granny flats can either be built or made from kits. If you’re getting one you need to know what you want it for. Research more on the topic.
