Politics / Masked DSS Operatives Storm National Assembly by phoenix45(m): 8:06am On May 03, 2018
Masked operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) stormed the premises of the National Assembly yesterday, causing tension among lawmakers, journalists and other workers.

There was a standing directive barring security men from entering the NASS premises with arms. They were to dump their arms and ammunition in the armory of the complex. But armed with Tavor assault rifles, the DSS operatives took up positions in parts of the building housing the two legislative chambers.

The scenario came barely two weeks after armed persons invaded the Senate chamber, overpowered security operatives, and fled with the mace.

Explaining the latest development a top security officer at the National Assembly told The Guardian: “There are issues within the security circles that you cannot understand. And because of the sensitivity of such, they cannot be divulged to the general public for now.”

Some of the masked men stood in front of the entrance to the Senate chamber, others at the route leading to the office of the Senate president, and at the entrance to the White House.

Armed men had, on April 18, forced their way into the Senate hall as Senator Ovie Omo-Agege (APC, Delta Central) showed up for the first time after his suspension. He had insisted that his sanction was illegal, and has not been seen at the complex since.

The embattled lawmaker received the backing of the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) Abubakar Malami, who faulted the suspension. The Senate, however, insisted its action was in order and irreversible.

Meanwhile, the upper legislative chamber yesterday resolved to petition the Presidency over failure by the Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, to honor its invitations.

The Senate had sought answers on alleged inhuman treatment meted out to Senator Dino Melaye and killings across the country.

The Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Joshak Habila, waited at the office of the Special Assistant to the President on National Assembly Matters (Senate), Ita Enang, to represent his boss. Lawmakers, however, refused him entry into the chamber, insisting Idris must appear in person.

The Chairman, Senate Committee on Police Affairs, Abu Ibrahim, disclosed he made several attempts to reach the IGP to no avail.

Senate President Bukola Saraki, therefore, mandated the Senate Majority Leader, Ahmad Lawan, and Ibrahim to engage with the Executive on the matter and report back within one week.

The development could escalate the rift between Saraki and President Muhammadu Buhari. The IGP had, last week, asked Habila to represent him at the Senate, while he accompanied Buhari to Bauchi State on a two-day official visit.

Saraki urged the Senate to approach the matter with maturity and statesmanship. He insisted the IGP’s conduct “cannot be right.” According to him, “We are not a Senate in committee; we are a Senate in plenary. Our constitutional powers require the IG to come and give a report on an incident involving a colleague, and more importantly, on the incessant killings in the country. And he felt he would not come but wants to delegate a junior to come to appear before us.”

He warned that the action could “endanger our democracy”, stressing Idris is “doing this not to us only, because the president told him to go to Benue and he refused. And he’s still there.”

He told the senators: “Let us approach this in two ways. One way, give him another period of time for him to reflect on the enormity of the action. Because whatever happens today, this sets a precedent for the future. And as such, it is important that we do not allow issues like this. We must ensure that the right thing is done. Give him time to ensure that he is well guided.”

He added: “There is great disrespect to the institution. But let the (Senate Majority) Leader and the Chairman of Police Affairs (Abu Ibrahim) engage with the Executive and state our position on this. There are powers we can exercise, which are not in the interest of us making progress in this country.

This year alone, over 500 people have been killed. And if we believe that a man who is in charge of enforcing law and order should not sit down and engage with us that have the powers to represent the people, then there’s something wrong somewhere.

“I will like us to hold our comments until then. And I’m pretty confident that the right thing and sanity will prevail. This is a country that will lead as an example to other countries. I don’t think we want to go so low by this kind of action.”

Earlier, Deputy Senate Majority Leader, Bala Ibn N’Allah, suggested a delegation led by Saraki should visit Buhari to register the Senate’s displeasure.

Autos / Tesla Driver Banned From Road After Switching To Autopilot And Moving To Passen by phoenix45(m): 2:29pm On May 01, 2018
A man in England has been banned from driving after he switched his Tesla vehicle to autopilot and moved to the passenger seat.

Bhavesh Patel was on the busy M1 highway in his Tesla S 60 when a passenger in a nearby vehicle was shocked to find there was no one in the driver’s seat of his car, according to a police report from the Hertfordshire Constabulary.

Patel, 39, had shifted his Tesla to autopilot mode, leaving the steering wheel and foot controls unmanned before moving to the passenger seat, authorities said.

On April 20, Patel pleaded guilty to dangerous driving during the May 2017 incident. Not only is he disqualified from driving for 18 months, but Patel is also required to complete 100 hours of community service over a 10-day period and pay prosecution costs.

Authorities were first notified of the incident after the witness uploaded a video of Patel in the passenger seat to social media. A notice of intended prosecution was sent to Patel shortly after.

It was estimated that Patel’s Tesla was traveling at approximately 40 mph in heavy traffic, according to the police report.

When Stevenage police questioned Patel, he admitted his actions were “silly” but argued that the Tesla was capable of something “amazing” and called himself the “unlucky one who got caught,” authorities said.

“What Patel did was grossly irresponsible and could have easily ended in tragedy. He not only endangered his own life but the lives of other innocent people using the motorway on that day,” investigating officer PC Kirk Caldicutt said in a statement.

“This case should serve as an example to all drivers who have access to autopilot controls and have thought about attempting something similar. I want to stress that they are in no way a substitute for a competent motorist in the driving seat who can react appropriately to the road ahead,” Caldicutt added. “I hope Patel uses his disqualification period to reflect on why he chose to make such a reckless decision on that day.”

And if it multipurpose, it will be , lets assume, market friendly but if only restricted to bitter leaves then, it will be useless in the long run because not everyone like or eat bitter leaves.
To me it is just another nice attempt but in the long run likely useless.

so because its not portable for individual uses, hotels, restaurants and catering services won't dim it fit to make use of it ?

Crime / Three Killed, 23 Injured In Philippine Hotel Fire by phoenix45(m): 5:18pm On Mar 18, 2018
Three people were killed and 23 injured by a major hotel fire in the Philippine capital Manila on Sunday, with others plucked by helicopter from the rooftop of the building engulfed in thick black smoke, authorities said.

The blaze at the Waterfront Manila Pavilion, a high-rise hotel and casino complex, was still raging nine hours after it began on Sunday morning, with two people missing as hundreds fled the area.

Authorities initially said four people had died but later clarified that one victim had been revived in hospital, according to Metro Manila Development Authority acting chief Jojo Garcia.

The three who died had likely suffocated while another 23 people had been taken to hospital, said Manila city’s disaster risk reduction chief, Johnny Yu.

“The smoke is very heavy and the wind is strong. That is our enemy now smoke and the wind which is why our firefighters are having a hard time,” Yu told reporters.

Clouds of smoke covered several floors of the building and swathed ladders of firefighters, some of whom had difficulty breathing, according to an AFP photographer on the scene.

Fire authorities were investigating the cause of the blaze, which is believed to have begun in the casino or mezzanine area of the 21-floor hotel which regularly hosted both locals and foreigners, Yu added.

Responders sent a helicopter to rescue people trapped on the roof while crews battled to evacuate others from lower floors.

Manila is one of 16 cities making up Metro Manila. Nearby cities were helping put out the blaze, Manila’s fire department said.

“This is a major fire. There were those who inhaled the smoke and were brought to the hospital,” senior fire officer Marlon Banaag told AFP.

On Sunday afternoon, President Rodrigo Duterte conducted an aerial survey of the fire aboard a helicopter, photos from his aide showed.

Deadly blazes break out regularly in the Philippines, particularly in slum areas where there are virtually no safety standards.

The deadliest in recent years was in suburban Manila where 72 people died in 2015 at a factory which makes rubber slippers.

In the southern city of Davao, 38 people were killed in December by a fire that ravaged a shopping mall and a call centre. And in June last year, an armed attacker set the Resorts World Manila hotel-casino complex on fire, claiming the lives of 37 people.

Celebrities / French Designer Hubert De Givenchy Dead At Age 91 by phoenix45(m): 5:07pm On Mar 12, 2018
Iconic French fashion designer Hubert de Givenchy was known for his elegant haute couture designs and years-long professional relationship with Audrey Hepburn.

Who Was Hubert de Givenchy?

Hubert de Givenchy was born to an aristocratic family in Beauvais, France, on February 21, 1927. After attending art school, he worked for several important fashion designers in Paris. He opened his own design house in 1952 and was immediately praised for his chic, feminine designs. One of Givenchy’s most famous affiliates was actress Audrey Hepburn, who wore his designs in Breakfast at Tiffany’s and Charade, among other films. Givenchy continued to design for decades, officially retiring in the mid-1990s. He died on March 10, 2018, at age 91.

Family Background

Hubert James Marcel Taffin de Givenchy was born on February 21, 1927, in the city of Beauvais in northern France. His parents, Lucien and Béatrice (née Badin) Taffin de Givenchy, gave him and his brother, Jean-Claude, an aristocratic heritage. After Lucien died in 1930, Givenchy was raised by his mother and maternal grandmother.

Training and Early Career

In 1944, Hubert de Givenchy moved to Paris, where he studied art at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts. Though he considered a career in law, he decided to enter the world of fashion. At the age of 17, Givenchy began an apprenticeship with designer Jacques Fath. After his time with Fath, Givenchy worked for famous French couture houses like Lucien Lelong, Robert Piguet and Elsa Schiaparelli.

House of Givenchy

The striking Givenchy, standing at 6’6″, opened his own design house in 1952, maintaining a modest business plan. His debut collection was a hit, featuring separates such as long skirts and tailored tops that included the “Bettina blouse,” named after model Bettina Graziani. In his following collections, he highlighted elegant evening gowns, feminine hats and tailored suits. The Givenchy name thus became synonymous with Parisian chic.

In 1953, Givenchy met Spanish designer Cristóbal Balenciaga, whom he greatly admired and who became a beloved mentor. In the mid-1950s, the two teamed up to introduce a new silhouette called the “sack,” a loose form without any waistline. By the 1960s, Givenchy, setting new trends and embracing aspects of youth culture, had begun to favor shorter hemlines and straighter silhouettes in his designs.

who is Audrey Hepburn to hulbert ?

Givenchy designed for many celebrity clients, including Oscar-winning actress Audrey Hepburn, with whom he would become closely affiliated with in terms of her cinematic style. He designed her attire for Funny Face (1957) and Breakfast at Tiffany’s (1961) along with fellow costumier Edith Head, who’d previously handled wardrobe for Hepburn in Sabrina.

(Givenchy had in fact first met Hepburn during the film’s production, but initially thought he would be receiving a visit from another actress with the same surname, Katharine. They nonetheless eventually hit it off. Audrey presented certain ideas inspired by Givenchy for Sabrina, with Head and her team ultimately coming up with the final looks for the film on their own.)

Givenchy also handled design duties on Audrey Hepburn films Love in the Afternoon (1957), Charade (1963), Paris When It Sizzles (1964) and How to Steal a Million (1966). And in 1957 the Givenchy brand released an immensely popular fragrance inspired by Hepburn called L’Interdit.

Among the other well-known women of style dressed by Givenchy were U.S. first lady Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, who wore a Givenchy gown during an official visit to the Palace of Versailles in 1961; Princess Grace of Monaco; Wallis Simpson, Duchess of Windsor; and socialite Babe Paley.

Later Career, Retirement and Death

Givenchy died on March 10, 2018, a spokesman for his company confirmed a few days later
After selling his business to the luxury conglomerate Louis Vuitton Moët Hennessey in 1988, Givenchy designed for seven more years, retiring and presenting his final collection in 1995. He was succeeded as head designer by enfant terrible John Galliano, with Alexander McQueen and Riccardo Tisci later serving as head designers.

In his later years, Givenchy lived at a country estate called Le Jonchet in the French countryside. His work was displayed in retrospective exhibitions at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York and the Musée Galliera in Paris, and he received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Council of Fashion Designers of America in 1996.

Politics / No Amount Of Blackmail Can Stop My Son In-law From Becoming Imo Governor-Rochas by phoenix45(m): 5:50am On Mar 05, 2018
Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha has declared that no amount of blackmail would stop his son in-law, Uche Nwosu, from becoming the state governor. His Chief Press Secretary, Sam Onwuemeodo, stated this in a statement yesterday.Okorocah absolved Nwosu of sending loyalists to attack the Archbishop of Owerri, Dr. Anthony J.V. Obinna.

While describing him as a ‘child of destiny’, he said no man could change the will of God in making Nwosu to replace him in 2019.The governor made the declaration in reaction to the social media alleging that Nwosu’s loyalist attacked the archbishop. He said the alleged “beating, lynching, attacking or harassing” of the cleric was being investigated.

The governor’s reads: ‘”We have as usual, read in the social media several versions of the purported beating of the Catholic Archbishop of Owerri Diocese, Bishop Anthony Obinna.

“He was allegedly beaten up by hoodlums or thugs or Entraco officials on the fictitious order of Nwosu, who is the Chief of Staff at the Government House.“Those behind this latest blackmail said the incident happened at a burial Church Service in Mgboma, Obube community, in Ngor-Okpala Local Council Area.”

According to the governor, the endorsement of his son-in-law as a favoured aspirant under the All Progressives Congress (APC) was flying in 24 of the 27 local councils in the state.Okorocha said Imo people, including youths; students, men and women have thrown their unalloyed support behind the youthful Chief of Staff, Nwosu for the 2019 governorship in the state.

“Seeing Nwosu as the guy to beat in the 2019 election, they now think that there is no other way to stop him rather than through unwarranted blackmail.“That is the reason such a quintessential gentleman, and an embodiment of decency should be associated with whatever that transpired at the event in question.

“For weeks now, they have flooded the social media with one ugly story or another, against the young man. But to the Imo people, such elements are wasting their time. They do not know that when God has said yes to any project, nobody can say no,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Archbishop has debunked the rumours that he was beaten by a group loyal to the Chief of Staff. He told The Guardian in a telephone conversation on Saturday evening that he was neither beaten, nor manhandled by any person.

The allegation reported in the online blogs; Facebook and other social media platforms.Obinna maintained that though he was against any form of what looked like undemocratic rule in the state and the country at large, he was not touched by anyone. He said: “Please, tell the people the truth. Nothing like that happened. No body beat me. But I saw them at the burial at Alex Mbata. I greeted them and left.”

In a related development, the State Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Prof. Francis Chukwuemeka Ezeonu, disclosed at the weekend, that over 370, 000 Permanent Voters Cards (PVCs) are yet to be collected in the state.

Ezeonu disclosed that the state office of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) would recruit 20, 000 ad hoc workers for the 2019 general elections. He said the personnel would serve in the 305 wards across the 27 local council areas. He said he was currently on tour of the 27 local council areas to sensitise the electorate on diverse issues relating to the election.

The REC added that the commission was compiling the list of the unclaimed PVCs to determine the living and the dead people on the list of unclaimed PVCs.Ezeonu disclosed that the state office of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) would recruit 20, 000 ad hoc workers
