It is almost 2 weeks now that JAMB conducted the supplementary examination. Up till now, the results of candidates who participated in the examination are yet to be released Just like any concerned person, we do not know the reason for this delay and JAMB has kept quiet on that till this moment. When you think of the fact that the results of the main examination which had more candidates for each day did not take this long to be released (except in cases JAMB had to withheld some results due to irregularities), you can't help but wonder what could possibly be the reason for this delay. For candidates who participated in the exam, we understand how frustrating this can be especially as some schools have started announcing their admission screening exercise. However, the best you all can do now is to still be patient and trust that JAMB has a good reason for delaying the results till now. Nevertheless, we are using this medium to make a strong appeal to JAMB to do the needful. Whatever is the reason for this delay should be resolved or at least make a press statement about the delay as soon as possible so that concerned candidates will know their fate and know what next move to make. Even if the results are not ready for now, why not tell them "expect your results so so date".I think that serves better than keep them waiting hopelessly. Remember they are Nigerians and humans, they paid fully for this exam & th's their second time of taking the exam. It is frustrating. Pls Jamb do the needful. Thanks. A concern Nigerian. |
lies More portholes than ever in Anambra now. Obiano stop paying media for news. |
By Southern League Of Professionals Did you know that southern Nigerians living in kano were killed by northerners for struggling for independence. It happened in 1953. They were attacked and killed by northerners opposed to independence after Anthony Enahoro called for independence in the Parliament in Lagos. Did you know that Africa's first genocide was perpetrated by northerners in Nigeria. This genocide preceded that of Rwanda and was the first time in Africa a government, military, police, political, traditional institutions and civilians combined undertook the massacre of another ethnic group. This infamy happened between 1966 and 1967 in northern Nigeria/ continued through the war and put the nation on the global genocide list. Did you know that regional police was scrapped because the northern government used the Native authorities regional police corruptly to intimidate/repress political opponents and rig elections. Subsequently there were strident calls for regional police to be scrapped. It was eventually scrapped by Aguiyi/Gowon. Did you know that the first election rigging in Nigeria was organised by the Northern Peoples congress. In 1960 due to lack of support by the TIV's the NPC rigged elections in TIV division leading to the TIV riots. Did you know that the Northern Peoples congress rigged the 1962 census results leading to national crisis. Did you know that in 1964 the Northern Peoples congress; Ahmadu Bello and Tafawa Balewa used federal power to massively rig elections in the Western region. This massive rigging led to riots (wetie) that led to scores dying dead on a daily basis. Rather than cancel the elections and organise fresh ones, Northern leader's allowed the riots and killings to continue for two years leading to the unfortunate military intervention in 1966. Did you know that Nigeria was named the most corrupt country in the world under the leadership of Generals Babangida, Abacha and Abdulsalam Abubakar. Did you know that Alhaji Umaru Dikko was the most corrupt/biggest single looter in the 2nd republic. He pioneered looting in billions and was reported to have stolen N2 billion as of 1983 at a time the Naira exchanged higher than the dollar. Umaru Dikko's loot in today's exchange rate would be the equivalent of a trillion Naira. Did you know that all Nigeria's institutions collapsed under Northern rule. Refineries, Nigeria Airways, Railway lines, steel plants, Universities, hospitals, NEPA, NIPOST etc all collapsed during Babangida, Abacha, Abubakar regimes due to massive corruption. Did you know that ethnic violence has been ongoing in the north since 1945. The first recorded riot in the north against other ethnic groups was in 1945. These killings have continued till today. Northern nigeria is the only place in Africa where fellow citizens are routinely killed. Its no surprise that the North now harbours Boko haram and Fulani herdsmen both of which have been classified the 1st and 4th deadliest terrorist groups in the world by the Global Terrorism Index (GTI). Did you know that from hitherto killing of christians in the core north, Fulani herdsmen now attack and kill Nigerians/christians in their home states without consequence because the Northern led federal government is protecting them. Such killings have taken place in Benue, Enugu, Kogi, Delta etc. Did you know that Northen leaders support Boko haram and Fulani herdsmen terrorists. They have never for once criticised, condemned or called for the arrest/prosecution of Boko haram or fulani terrorists. Did you know that the North habours the poorest and most destitute illiterate population in the world. This was recently confirmed by Emir Sanusi. Despite controlling power since independence the north has the world's poorest/destitute/illiterate population due to harbouring Nigeria's most corrupt elite. Did you know that despite the claimed bogus population, the north has never produced any literary giant/ academician of note. While the Yorubas have produced Wole Soyinka, Ola Rotimi etc the Ibos Chinua Achebe, Chimmamanda Adichie etc the core north cannot boast of a single literary/academic figure. Did you know that for entrance into unity schools the South has the highest cut off point while the north has the lowest. For example a man from Delta, Ogun or Anambra state who scores 170/200 might not be admitted while a man from Zamfara who scores 9/200 will be admitted. This mediocrity/Apartheid continues till today. Did you know that Moshood Abiola won the freest and fairest election in 1993 but the election was cancelled and he was killed because the north didn't want a Yoruba to come to power. Did you know that next door in Ghana a single ethnic group the Akan/Ashanti make up 50 percent of the country's population but they have not claimed to be "born to rule" nor do they oppress other ethnic groups but in Nigeria where Hausa plus fulani make up less than 30 percent of the population they arrogantly claim to be "born to rule" accordingly oppressing other ethnic groups/ refusing to enthrone justice and equality. Did you know that when as a Southerner you move to the core north you are segregated into " Sabon gari" (strangers quaters) and when northerners move down south they segregate themselves into "Hausa quarters" because they don't beleive in Nigeria and don't want to mix/integrate with other Nigerians. Did you know that in creative industries ie Nollywood, music, comedies, sports and other entertainment the core north is nowhere to be found. Did you know that in 2000 the core north went against Nigeria's constitution and declared Sharia in 12 northern states thereby technically rebelling and separating themselves from the rest of Nigeria. Ensuing Sharia riots took more than 20,000 lives. Did you know that the core north has been alone in opposing every progressive attempt to restructure and move the country foward prefering instead to maintain the parasitic, unworkable, unjust and corrupt status quo. The core north/Hausa Fulani are Nigeria's greatest faultline/problem. They are corrupt, unprogressive, unjust, domineering and murderous with no regard for human life. Except a definitive decision is taken by the rest of the country willing to restructure to separate from them, Nigeria will never know peace or progress. Signed Dr I. A |
By Mike Ozekhome, SAN. NNAMDI KANU’S TRAVAILS: A BARE BAIL DEVOID OF LIBERTY BY CHIEF MIKE A. A. OZEKHOME, SAN, OFR, FCIARB, LL.D CONSTITUTIONAL LAWYER AND HUMAN RIGHTS ACTIVIST I congratulate Justice Binta Nyako for being courageous enough to even grant bail at all to IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu, on health grounds. This is predicated on the truism that the Judiciary has been so humiliated, browbeaten, terrorized and emasculated by the Executive, that it takes extraordinary courage and daring bravado, for a Judge to even grant bail to a much vilified Nnamdi Kanu, whose only “crime” is that he seeks self determination for his repressed, oppressed, suppressed and marginalized indigenous people of Biafra, a right recognized even by the UNO and AU in all self – determination instruments. The catch here however, is that in granting the bail, the Judge, apparently trying to tread softly, took back with the right hand what she gave with the left hand. Bail is a constitutional right. It is guaranteed by section 35(5) of the 1999 Constitution, with or without conditions attached. But any conditions so attached to bail must be such that the grant of bail is itself not rendered meaningless and impotent as in the Nnamdi case. Kanu’s bail conditions are outrightly stringent, punitive, discriminatory, profiling and stereotyping. Hear them: He must produce 3 sureties, who must deposit the sum of 100m each (a ready recipe for corruption). One of the sureties must be a highly respected Jewish leader since Kanu practices Judaism as his religion (discrimination on the basis of religion). Produce a highly placed person of Igbo extraction (discrimination on the basis of place of origin and ethnic group). Produce a respected person who resides and owns landed property in Abuja (a call for the elitist money bags). Must not attend any rally or grant an interview (breach of freedom of movement and speech). Must not be in a crowd exceeding 10 persons (denial of freedom of Association). Must surrender his Nigerian and British passports (denial of freedom of movement). Must sign an undertaking to be available for trial at all times (normal. This is the main purpose of bail). His wedding ring and reading glasses to be given back to him (thank God for tokenism). Must provide monthly update on Kanu’s health (yes, to ensure his health is improving). Some of the bail conditions are not only troubling, unsetting and punitive, but are simply unconstitutional, as briefly highlighted above. Section 42(1) of the 1999 Constitution provides that “a citizen of Nigeria of a particular community, ethnic group, place of origin, sex, religion or political opinion shall not, by reason only that he is such a person:- (a) be subjected either expressly by, or in the practical application of, any executive or administrative action of the government, to disabilities or restrictions to which citizens of Nigeria of other communities, ethnic groups, places of origin, sex, religions or political opinions are not made subject to; or (b) be accorded either expressly by, or in the practical application of, any law in force in Nigeria or any such executive or administrative action, any privilege or advantage that is not accorded to citizens of Nigeria of other communities, ethnic groups, places of origin, sex, religions or political opinions. (2) No citizen of Nigeria shall be subjected to any disability or deprivation merely by reason of the circumstances of his birth. It is crystal clear from these constitutional provisions that the stringent bail conditions granted to Nnamdi have clearly discriminated against him and subjected him to “certain disabilities or restriction” on the basis of his religion, place of birth, political opinion and ethnic group. What the bail conditions are simply saying is that it will be illegal, forbidden and contrary to the bail conditions were Kanu to do the following: (a) Kanu cannot be received by a multitude of his village people, kindred and kinsmen, who have missed his presence since his mindless incarceration over one and half years ago, contrary to the right to freedom of Association granted by section 40 of the 1999 Constitution. (b) That Kanu cannot express his right to freedom of expression clearly guaranteed by section 39 of the Constitution. (c) That Kanu cannot exercise his freedom of movement guaranteed by section 41 of the Constitution. (d) That Kanu cannot receive sympathizers, well wishers and political Associates, once they are more than 10. (e) That Kanu cannot freely exercise, without being monitored, his freedom of religion and conscience contrary to section 38 of the Nigerian Constitution. (f) That Kanu cannot, at any given time, even in his household or larger family setting, host more than 10 people (ludicrous; unnatural!). (g) That Kanu cannot even visit any hospital to take care of his health, because the hospital staff of Doctors, nurses, para-medical staff and other patients, must surely exceed 10 (contrary to section 17(3)(c) of the Constitution. (h) That Kanu cannot attend church service or the synagogue worship to glorify God in thanksgiving for his release, since such place of worship will harbour hundreds if not thousands, of people (contrary to section 10 and 38 of the Constitution). (i) That Kanu cannot even go to a busy motor park, airport, seaport, Parks and Gardens, Cinema hall, theatre, to transport himself, watch films or relax, or even go to Shoprite to shop. (j) That Kanu cannot deliver lectures to students, or groups, or participate in seminars, workshops, summits, conferences, etc., as these involve many people. (k) That by way of summary, Kanu should remain a hermit, marooned like Robinson Crusoe in the 1719 novel of the same name, by Daniel Defoe, who spent over 28 years as a castaway, after he was washed up on the shores of a deserted island, near the mouth of Oronoco River in South America. Day by day, we subject the Nigerian society to bottomless ridicule and derision in the comity of Nations. Bail conditions are simply to ensure the attendance of a person in court, and nothing more. Once excessive or punitive, bail loses its purpose, function and goal. I urge Nnamdi Kanu’s lawyers to immediately file an application before the same Justice Binta, for variation of the bail terms to more favourable ones, that will make Kanu a human being once more. I urge the Nigerian judiciary to stand up “gidigba”, to defend the rights of all Nigerians against executive lawlessness, judicial timidity and legislative rascality. God bless Nigeria and Nigerians. |

Sexual immorality is on the increase all over the world. Adultery is fast becoming the norm and men of God are also joining the club. Married women are not left out, many are having secret lovers and emotional affairs are becoming the order of the day. The rate at which immorality is increasing is alarming! It is spreading fast into every nook and cranny and children are also being initiated into the club. It's no news that 4, 5 years old kids now have sex with each other. Staying sexually pure these days is becoming a Herculean task. One of the reasons people fall flat into illicit sex is over confidence. The stupid belief that you can be free around the opposite sex and nothing would happen! A lot will happen! One of the ways you can stay sexually pure whether married or single these end time is to set strict boundaries. If you are too careless around the opposite sex, you will fall flat on your face! That is the truth. The earlier you believe this and work on it, the better. You can't be careless around the opposite sex and hope to stay sexually pure, set boundaries! There are some people who can't be your friends, raise the standard. Any body can call you names, that's their headache, you have your destiny to protect. As a rule, I don't make friends with liars, gossips and jealous women. They make life so complicated. If you believe in illicit sex, we can't be friends, period! Monitor your chats. Don't allow anybody send you flirty messages, no matter how innocent it sounds, warn them and if they refuse to stop, block them! Limit the hugs and touches. Don't get used to hugging opposite sex. If you must hug, let it be both male and female. If your hugging anointing is only for female or only for male, just keep your anointing to yourself, it is not unto edification . Don't cling to pet names (except your close family members and same sex friends), it doesn't make any sense. Pet names turn the opposite on, if you don't know that, know it right now. Be sensitive to attractions. Don't be naive around the opposte sex, know when a man/ woman is sexually attracted to you and move back from that person. If they focus too much on your physique and body, they are sexually attracted to you, move back. Know when you are sexually attracted to someone and move back. It's perfectly normal to have chemistry for someone. Marrying the greatest man on earth or the most beautiful, virtuous woman in the universe will not automatically stop you from being attracted to someone else. Know when the thought of another man/ woman get you excited and move back. Don't jump at new relationships. Give it time. Study the person, know what they stand for, see if your core values are compatible, if not, move back! Leadership attracts all kinds of people. If you are a leader or you are gifted, talented or intelligent, the opposite sex will show more interest in you, be careful whom you allow to get close to you. Accepts gifts with care. Men don't joke with their time and money. If he spends so much time and money on you especially when you do not ask, he may one day ask for sex. Stop begging men for money. Work with your two hands and raise your standard. Men will respect and honour you for it. Work on your marriage. Fix the problem as soon as possible or else you get attracted to someone who gives you what you lack in your marriage, adultery is the result. Be prayerful, be watchful. Jesus says "watch and pray that ye may not fall into temptation..." Don't stay with the opposite sex in a dark or lonely room. Don't counsel the opposite sex on a bed in a lonely room. Avoid provocative dresses and pictures. Let your spouse advice you on what is okay for you. Mind the pictures you post on the social media, if it is getting unnecessary opposite sex attention, delete it. Don't visit the opposite sex alone, it doesn't make sense. Don't patronize night clubs and joints. If you must, go with your spouse. There are better places to have a good time. These and more are the things you need to do to stay sexually pure in this 21st century. People may laugh at you, it doesn't matter. They may call you a neurotic, old school, psychotic, fanatic, over sensitive or paranoid, don't give a damn! Your destiny is too precious to waste on the altar of sin. Avoid FRIENDS who make fun of HOLINESS and make friends with people who Appreciate PURITY and HOLINESS. You will not FALL in Jesus Name. God bless |
My own take here is that Jessica is never mature and a good Christian, Catholic, which she claims to be. Being a Christian means Christlike, being like Christ. I think Christ would not be happy with you now because He(Christ) would rather want u pray for the priest in question. That's why I love good Christian, they choose the way of love, the way of the cross. They prefer to show love & help to the least person even the worse sinner than condemn. I want to ask u a question Jessica. In this ur post, have u succeeded in giving help or love to this " weak priest "(nobody is perfect, he is a priest, he is also a man like me. **I know how hard it's to abstain from sex.** He would have become a politician but Christ called him knowing this weakness. Christ may have called u Jessica to become a Rev sis but He didn't.) Even though u said u want to alert & help other girls who might fall victims. Who told u that they are not aware that a priest can fall. Remember Christ never condemned Mary Magdalene, criminals beside him on the Calvary but showed love & help. He didn't alert other girls or men to take cover. Jessica, I pray that Christ forgives u on ths.***If that story is real & not fabricated. *** |
*BREAKING: Naira Gains; While DSS Still Detaining Mr Gbadamosi Who Exposed The Govt Forex Fraud.* While Nigerians are still speculating the actual reason behind the sudden appreciation of the Naira over major International currencies since February 20, 2017 and Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) sudden change of policy, Mr Babatunde Gbadamosi, a Lagos Businessman and former governorship candidate, who exposed in details the monumental organized foreign currency fraud by the Buhari government and officials of CBN was arrested and still detained by the Department of Security Services (DSS) since February 22, 2017. In a social media video which went viral, Mr Gbadamosi frowned at the shabby practices where those that genuinely need foreign currencies for Business are not provided with any, while the President's allies and the cronies of CBN big-wigs are receiving them at ridiculous low rates of N3/$1. Every effort to secure Mr Gbadamosi's release has proved abortive. The DSS has ensure that no one visits or see the incarcerated voice of the Nigerian opposition in the secret detention center he was dumped six days ago and sources close to Hope For Nigeria within the secret police headquarters in Abuja are claiming that Gbadamosi was accused of blackmailing the Central Bank of Nigeria and the Government by releasing those classified information about forex sales. Regrettably, while Mr Babatunde Gbadamosi is languishing in DSS secret detention center for saving Nigeria from the forex mafia, Nigerians are giving the glory to the acting President Osibanjo who raised no finger in the new development where the CBN suspended forex sales to cronies and allies of President Buhari and sudden revert to the polices of the former President Goodluck Jonathan, where the Naira is protected with our external reserve. Re-echoing the concern of Nigerians including that of the former CBN governor and the Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido who revealed the operation of over 20 different foreign exchange rates by the CBN and some Nigerians making billions of Naira daily from their gardens trading dollar they bought at an alarming low rates, Mr Gbadamosi demanded that these sharp practices should stop in other for the country to survive the self-induced recession. Gbadamosi quoting various media sources in the Video, stated that the CBN was selling forex to some close allies of President Muhammadu Buhari for as low as N3 to $1 through what is called Bills of Collection. People where given Dollars with cold claims that their Form M was filled and submitted like 35 years ago but forex was not released. They cartel only has to claim that they made their importation in 1985 but forex was not released to you despite submitting duly completed Form M. With all documents perfected, the forex will then be released at the prevailing rate in 1985. They will get $3 million at N5/ $1 and selling to end users at say N480/ $1. The said customer will be making about N1.425billion in one transaction. He listed transactions by some individuals that got $4,327 at the rate of N23.34 to $1 through “credit card payment” for “invisible” purpose and under “invisible sector”. A bank also got $3,589.11 at the rate of N3.19 to $1 also for “invisible” purposes and under “invisible” sector. There was a transaction involving sale of $66.72 at the rate of N0.62 to $1. There was also a sale of $5.56 to a company at the rate of N0.61 also for “invisible” purposes. A particular transaction also involved the sale of $570.8 at the rate N3.17. In contrast, there was a company, who purchased $1,462,480.83 at the rate of N425 to $1. The document shows that individuals and companies got foreign exchange for purposes ranging from importation, PTA, school fees, “invisible”, family maintenance allowances, mortgage payments and medical travel among others. This video lead the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr. Abubakar Malami (SAN), to query the CBN Governor, Mr. Godwin Emefiele, demanding “prompt response” to the allegations of corruption in the CBN’s foreign exchange allocation and transactions. Multiple Petitions against the CBN indicated how some companies and individuals got foreign exchange in US dollars at the rates as low as low as N0.61 to $1 while others got it in rates that were as high as N470 to $1. Malami, in the letter, dated February 6, 2017, and with reference number, HAGF/CBN/2017/VOL.1/1, asked Emefiele to respond to the allegations “to enable us to advise the Presidency and take appropriate measures.” Titled ‘allegations of racketeering in the Central Bank of Nigeria; disparity in allocation of foreign exchange’, and addressed to Emefiele, the letter was delivered to the CBN governor’s office on Monday. The allegations in the attorney general's letter to Emefiele includes:- alleged corruption in the apex bank’s “foreign exchange allocation transactions. 2. questionable policy in CBN’s allocation and sale of foreign currency to Nigerians. 3. arbitrary allotment of different exchange rates for same purposes. 4. allocation of conflicting foreign exchange rates. The DSS has not charged Mr Gbadamosi after six days of arrest and they denied him medical attention, family visits and rejected the request for his lawyers to see him or be informed of the reason for his arrest. It is shocking to note that Nigerians are enjoying the appreciation of the Naira over major currencies and praising the CBN and the government that overseas the foreign currency fraud that almost crippled the Nigerian economy while the man who scarified neck is under chain and locked up in a secret detention centre. STOP THIS MADNESS! (A Press Statement following the Massacre of Innocent Citizens in Nimbo, by Suspected Fulani Herdsmen) «A voice is heard in Ramah, lamenting and weeping bitterly: it is Rachel weeping for her children, refusing to be comforted for her children, because they are no more» (Jer 31: 15). This passage from the Prophet Jeremiah captures the present mood in Nsukka and, especially, in the hitherto quiet and peaceful farming community of Nimbo in Uzo-Uwani Local Government Area. When the news broke about the massacre of innocent, unarmed and defenseless citizens of Nimbo in the early hours of Monday 25 April by invading armed militants, suspected to be Fulani herdsmen, the first question that popped into my mind was: "Again?" This was because similar stories had been heard from many parts of the country in recent times, including Abbi, another community in our Diocese, also in Uzo-Uwani Local Government Area. The news of the attack was soon followed by a flood of human beings fleeing their homes and emptying into the urban centre of Nsukka, many of them scantily clad women clutching only their babies. Wailing filled the air as vans brought in lifeless bodies of persons who were slaughtered like animals for the crime of having been found in their homes or on the way to their farms. Such scenes sent the minds of the older ones back to similar scenes in 1966, when our people had to flee the places they had considered their homes in other parts of the country, as a result of the first ethnic cleansing in modem African history. The big difference now, 50 years after, is that we are being chased out of our homes in our own land, from our own farms, from our Churches, from our schools and from our village markets. As our people say, if a man is pursued from outside, he runs into his house; but when he is pursued from his house, he has no place to run to. The most painful aspect of the Nimbo massacre is that it was announced, expected and executed without inhibition - in broad daylight! The State Government is reported to have made attempts to provide security in the area prior to the incident. But what those who lost their dear ones (especially those little babies now blankly staring into an uncertain future, because their fathers have been senselessly murdered) and all of us want to know is why, as the reports go, the security forces "tactically" withdrew shortly before the attack and why, when they later returned to the scene, there was no attempt to immediately pursue and arrest the perpetrators. At present, nobody can say with certainty the number of those killed, given that more of those who were badly wounded are still dying and some bodies are still being recovered from the bush where the people had been killed while taking refuge. Today, Ni.nbo is like a ghost town. It is equally disturbing that whereas the invading militants killed and maimed anybody they could find, the only houses they attacked were Christian religious houses. They burnt the house of one Pastor and from there headed straight to the residence of the Catholic Priest, where they attempted to bum the house but could not, since they did not find any petrol in the car and a motorcycle parked there, in the generator, and in the containers. When their attempt to break into the house also failed, they fired gunshots into the rooms, in an attempt to kill all those whom they suspected were hiding inside. And we are forced to ask: If these men were only herdsmen, why did they particularly single out Churches for their attack? Nsukka people are peace-loving people. Why would anybody single them out for this type of massacre? In the name of God, I appeal to my peace-loving people to please remain law abiding and not to take the law into their hands. But even as I do this, I hear them asking aloud: Are there really any laws in this country guaranteeing the safety of our life and property even in our homes? If there are, is there anybody out there ready to enforce them? Or has this become a lawless country where violent persons can kidnap and kill, rob and rape innocent citizens in their homes, on the road, in their farms, at any time of the day or night, unhindered? How are we supposed to react to these threats to our very survival as a people when the Federal Government, who controls the security agencies, seems unwilling to protect us and the State Government appears incapable of defending us, since it has no control over these agencies? Our young people are asking us why the Police and the Armed Forces of the Federal Government are so swift and sometimes so high-handed in their reaction when unarmed persons march the streets in protest in the South East and so heavy - footed when it comes to stopping the massacre of the South Easterners anywhere in the country, even in their own homes. They are asking whether Boko Haram has actually been weakened or has only been redeployed from the North East to the South East. And we are scratching our heads in vain for the correct answers. While we wait for these answers, we shout a loud and an absolute "NO!" to any form of violence even in the face of this persistent provocation. Reprisal attacks are not the answer. They are wrong; they are unlawful; they are un-Christian. Besides, we should not give the Police and the Army any excuses for adding to our woes, as they are sure to respond rapidly to any perceived form of aggression on our part. We appreciate the position taken by President Muhammadu Buhari on this latest war-like attack on a peaceful community and hope that his directives will be carried out promptly. Protection of life and property of citizens is the primary responsibility of government and every other act of governance would lose its meaning if this was not guaranteed. We are consoled by what the President said. But only concrete actions can lead to the return of normalcy in the community. Nimbo and its neighboring communities are among the few remaining farming communities in our area and the herdsmen had earlier chased the people out of their larger farms. The rains have just started and they had begun work in the smaller farms nearer to their homes. And even from there too they have now been chased out. It is sad that in these hard times, when many have been crushed by the harsh economic conditions in the country, in addition to the loss of loved ones, many of our people are now homeless and all of us will also face the problem of acute food shortage in the near future. We call on the Federal Government not only to arrest and prosecute the perpetrators of the massacre as well as their sponsors and collaborators, as the President has directed, but also to disarm all those who carry assault rifles publicly when they have no permission to bear arms. Some people predicted that Nigeria would be a failed State by the year 2015. All of us heaved a sigh of relief after the general elections and the smooth hand over last year. But any further delay in dealing with this and similar cases all over the country may lead those who made that prediction to affirm that its realization has only been delayed not avoided. If these incessant attacks and raids going on in many parts of the country are not stopped immediately, it may happen that by the time our President has won the war against corruption, there will no longer be any Nigeria left for him to govern. We thank Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi for the efforts ne made to prevent the tragedy and for his timely interventions after, without which more lives would certainly have been lost. We expect, however, that he will use the tools at his disposal to prevent its reoccurrence in any part of the State and to find out why, despite his efforts and prior information, the security agents failed to protect the lives of innocent citizens. To our Senator Chuka Utazi, we say "Gbagaa!", in ail the meanings of that word, for what he has been and done for his people during this time of crisis. We also thank the Inspector General of Police Solomon Arase, for promptly visiting Nimbo and for promising to bring those responsible for the massacre to book. But we are forced to wonder whether it does not bother him that some herdsmen in this country are better armed than some of our Policemen. Does it mean that the lives of cattle in some parts of the country are worth more than the lives of human beings in some other parts? The Catholic Diocese of Nsukka is in mourning for her dead children and in pains for the displaced ones. We are also living in fear because we do not know where and when the armed militants will strike next. In the meantime, we shall do what we can to offer some help to the displaced persons, relying on the usual generosity of our people. But we have absolute faith in the abiding presence of God among us. In these difficult and trying times, all of us, especially those who have lost dear ones, should know that God is even nearer to us than we thought. Let us turn to him in prayer, asking him to receive our dead ones in his kingdom and heal our bleeding hearts. We direct that Masses and prayers be offered in all the Churches in the Diocese next Sunday, while awaiting the detailed programme for our prayer in this period which will be announced later. As good Christians, we should, like our Lord Jesus Christ, pray for these who persecute and kill us: «Father, forgive them; they do not know what they are doing» (Lk 23:34). We also pray for those whose responsibility it is to protect and defend us. We are sure that in no distant time we shall also hear the voice of the Lord saying to us: «Stop your weeping dry your eyes ... There is hope for your future after all ... your children will return to their homeland» (Jer 31: 16-17). Nigeria is a country richly blessed by God with abundant human and natural resources. For decades we have continued to senselessly slaughter ourselves, squander our resources and destroy our environment. We call on all to please stop this madness, so that, as a people, we may realize our full potentials for the benefit of all and to the glory of God. Godfrey Igwebuike ONAH (Catholic Bishop of Nsukka) Friday 29 April 2016 |
If you are confused or wonder about what happened in Enugu yesterday, this is the timeline as Ariaku Emeh Iroh's wall provides it: 1. Governor Ugwuanyi gets information that Uzouwani will be attacked as some herdsmen from Nassarawa are converging near the community. 2. "There was a call made by Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi to the president, he was put on hold for over an hour 15 minutes. 3. This call was made in the presence of 13 men and 4 women, the president aid (aide)told the Governor that the president will get back to him. 4.The president through his aid(aide) after 4 hrs told Enugu state governor that the president will do something about it. 5. "...Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi on hearing that the police have not arrived at Uzouwani called GOC 82 division for help. He was refereed to the presidency again. 6. This time around, he was put on hold for nearly 2 hrs again, while waiting to speak to the president. News came in that the attack he was planning to prevent has actually taken place. 7. Within an hour, the commissioner and GOC who refereed the Governor to the president has mobilised their men to stop retaliation. The same way Lagos and Agatu was attacked and retaliation prevented. We need to know why police commissioner and GOC need presidency order before they can protect the innocent citizens?. We need to know - why police and military sent their men to Uzouwani after the attack to prevent retaliation?. We need to know why a sitting Governor cannot use the support of police and military to protect his people?. Abled men and women would have prepared to help and protect their people. "Orji Uzo Kalu, used media to avert this type of unnecessarily deaths in Okigwe during his tenure. He called his media team and went on air. His face off with Obasanjo made him bypass OBJ and went on air. Abians was forced to prepare and fulani men went back home. ...Put the call before public media , have it taped and watched and monitored all over the world and Uzouwani citizens would've rushed back home in their millions to protect their relatives. The world will see how a tyrant value lives of his people." |

A contentious finding made news last week: People who eat a lot of food that contains trans fats have poorer memories than people who don't. At Scientific Sessions 2014, a meeting of the American Heart Association in sunny Chicago, doctors announced results of a study that found the link between eating foods high in these specific fats and performing poorly on word-recall tests. It's a loose association, but an important idea. "Trans fats were most strongly linked to worse memory in young and middle-aged men during their working and career-building years," said lead researcher Beatrice Golomb, a professor of medicine at the University of California San Diego, in a press statement. Trans fats exist in trace amounts in whole milk and beef, but most are the unnatural spawn of the twentieth-century processed-food movement in the form of partially hydrogenated oils. They are synthesized to turn liquid oils into solid fats with longer shelf lives. Trans fats are the least healthy fatty acid. The Center for Science in the Public Interest has estimated that replacing all the trans fat that comes in partially hydrogenated oils with other fats would save upwards of 10,000 lives a year. Last week's study seems like all the more reason to avoid or ban trans fats. Seems like. To come up with their findings, Golomb and her team showed a series of cards bearing single words to 1,000 men who were asked to note repetition in the words on subsequent cards. The more trans fat the men had in their diets (based on retrospective surveys), the more poorly they performed on the memory test. Of course, those diet surveys relied on memory. And other foods might have been causing this association. Could it be that people who eat diets that are high in trans fats are also eating diets that are overall terrible? High in things like sugar or pesticides or plastics or tilapia? Yes, it could. The study accounted for variables like education and depression, which might influence memory—but it didn't account for the rest of what the people eat. It actually only accounted for one other dietary variable outside of trans fats: chocolate. Why chocolate? Why, chocolate? Because, Golomb told me, chocolate intake seems to have a link to memory. Her own research has actually shown it. In addition to a 2012 finding that people who eat chocolate more frequently tend to have lower body-mass indices, Golomb has also found that people who eat a lot of chocolate tend to perform better on memory tests. (Eating omega-3 fats might also improve memory, Golomb told me—something I mentioned in "This Is Your Brain on Fish"—but her current study didn't account for omega-3s.) The idea is that chocolate has antioxidant effects which improve the functioning of cells that line blood vessels, leading to better blood flow and cell energy, which in turn improves cognition. And Golomb is not alone in championing that idea. The New England Journal of Medicine recently published a novel study that found "a surprisingly powerful correlation between chocolate intake per capita and the number of Nobel laureates in various countries." Chocolate Consumption and Nobel Laureates (Messerli/The New England Journal of Medicine)Franz Messerli, a professor of medicine at Columbia University, noted in that study that flavonoids, which are abundant in plant-based diets, have been shown to improve cognitive function. "Specifically, a reduction in the risk of dementia, enhanced performance on some cognitive tests, and improved cognitive function in elderly patients with mild impairment have been associated with a regular intake of flavonoids," wrote Messerli in the journal article. The subclass of flavonoids called flavanols, which are in cocoa, green tea, and red wine, "seems to be effective in slowing down or even reversing the reductions in cognitive performance that occur with aging." Another study, released last month, found that people who drank a mixture loaded with cocoa flavanols did better on a memory test than people who drank a low-flavanol mix. The older subjects performed at the same level as people two to three decades younger. Messerli went on to hypothesize that since chocolate consumption has been duly shown to improve cognitive function, "It seems most likely that in a dose-dependent way, chocolate intake provides the abundant fertile ground needed for the sprouting of Nobel laureates." Though, of course, he stipulated, "A second hypothesis, reverse causation—that is, that enhanced cognitive performance could stimulate countrywide chocolate consumption—must also be considered." Digging further into the Nobel-chocolate correlation the following year, Golomb surveyed 23 winners of Nobel prizes (in physics, chemistry, physiology or medicine, and economics) about their chocolate habits. The responses are great. One prize-winner in chemistry said, "Chocolate made me who I am today." Another, in physics, said, "Who can say a bad word about any research that is poised so precisely in the vast space between balanced objectivity and total confusion." A physicist wrote simply, "White chocolate is an obscenity." Most poignant was the comment of a medicine/physiology laureate: "This has made me wonder if I might have been more successful had I consumed more chocolate." On the whole, ten laureates (43 percent) reported eating chocolate more than twice a week, compared with only 25 percent of 237 well-educated non-Nobel-laureates. The results were published last summer in the journal Nature. Since these studies linking chocolate consumption to mental function are based on the understanding of chocolate as an antioxidant that supports cell energy, Golomb decided now to look at trans fats, which have antithetical properties. Since trans fats are prooxidant and induce inflammation (which is linked to worse memory and cognition), Golomb told me by email, "We reasoned that trans fats might be adversely linked to memory." She explained that both the oxidative stress itself (through effects on proteins, lipids, DNA, and RNA) and inadequate cell energy contribute to cell dysfunction and cell death. Both are linked to worse memory. Inadequate cell energy can lead to "idling neurons" that might be restored with enough energy. And so, the inflammation induced by trans fats (and reduced by chocolate) may underlie these new memory findings. Even if it's not the trans fats that drove this new correlation, the effect does seem to be due to some dietary factor. So, optimizing one's memory is yet another reason to eat well. I would make a joke here about "brain food," because that seems to be what people do when writing about this sort of research, but I am out of jokes. Maybe I need some chocolate, haha. Is that a joke? People tend to laugh after comments about loving chocolate. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has a proposal out now that would remove trans fats from being classified as food altogether, and make them "additives" instead. In recent years many companies have stopped using these oils and eliminated trans fats from products—either voluntarily or by law in places like New York City and California. Public opinion and aversion to products that contain them has led to trans fats all but banning themselves. "As I tell patients," Golomb said in the press statement last week, "while trans fats increase the shelf life of foods, they reduce the shelf life of people." I asked if people laugh when she says that. Is anyone confused about the idea of a human's "shelf life?" "I think they mostly get it," she said. http://newsinfok..com/2014/11/chocolate-memory-food.html |
