Islam was carved out from Christianity, islam is more of a copycat of christianity but Islam got stuck in the Christians old book(old testament). Old testament law is more of "an eye for an eye", the reason Jesus came to the world was to change some of those laws. Since Islam got stuck in the old law they will never understand the new law. The new law is about forgiveness, love/charity, endurance and hope for a place in the coming paradise. If you know the origin of the civil war you will understand that it was more of a war between the Igbos and the Hausas, what you tagged encroachment was simply because the Nigeria capital was in Yorubaland and that is where Gowon was administering the affairs of the country and also conducting the war.To the biafrans the target would be to capture Gowon, to the Nigeria side the target would be to capture Ojukwu. Gowon resides in Lagos so would you have expected the biafran troops to go looking for him in Sokoto?

We had more of Hausa soldiers just as yoruba soldiers that was defending Nigeria(it was not about encroaching yorubaland), it was simply a war.
Awolowo should have only ask Gowon to move the capital to the northern region and prosecute his war from there, Awolowo will declare no flight zone in his region and that means both biafra and Nigeria troop will have to travel through Cameroon if they really wants the fight. The stress alone would have stopped the war without much casualties and since Awolowo has forced Gowon to move them that automatically would have given yoruba her own independence while the igbos would have gained their autonomy too and the Hausas remain in their own region.
