Crime / Pastor Declared Wanted For Allegedly St£aling 52 Phones - Eyes Of Lagos by phosky(m): 4:52pm On Apr 07, 2023
Pastor declared wanted for allegedly st£aling 52 phones, other items belonging to worshippers who attended his crusade in Oyo

Dr. Owen Abraham, a Gambian pastor, is reportedly on the run after st£aling 52 phones, money and other valuables from worshippers that attended a crusade he organised in Ibadan, Oyo State.

It was gathered Abraham, on the last day of the three-day crusade, claimed that the Holy Spirit directed him to tell people to hand in their phones and valuables, only to later abscond with them.

The victims said Abraham, who lured them into three days fasting and prayer, was nowhere to be found on the last day of the crusade, as all efforts to reach him proved ab%rtive.

A victim, Mrs Grace Akintola, who spoke with Eyes Of Lagos , said many widows went for the crusade because the said pastor promised to give each person a bag of rice and money, adding that Abraham also promised to empower students with scholarship.

Mrs Akintola, a widow, while recounting her ordeal said: “The pastor approached an Igbo lady in our area to assist him to gather widows and students, saying he wanted to help us. Eyes of Lagos reports,

Someone in my area invited me for the crusade. He wore pastor regalia. He said he will buy a house for one of us and that the house will be fully furnished.

He promised some people that attended the crusade money. Even politicians cannot give out such amounts he promised. On the last day of the crusade, he sold a bottle of water for us at the rate of N4,800. He said perfume is inside the bottle water. Many people paid for the water.”

Another victim, a student of University of Ibadan (UI) who pleaded anonymity, said the pastor ordered them to fast for three days…

Politics / I Don’t Fear Death, I’ll Rather Go Down Fighting For Justice – Falz by phosky(m): 9:35am On Apr 05, 2023
I don’t fear death, I’ll rather go down fighting for justice – Falz

Nigerian hip-hop artist, Folarin Falana, popularly known as Falz, has revealed why he does confrontational music.

In a recent interview with Arise TV, Falz said he was not afraid of death, stressing that life in Nigeria is not meaningful.

The multi-talented entertainer featured on the programme ‘Music as a Socio-political Tool’, on the heels of his latest song with his colleague, Vector – ‘Yakubu‘, titled after the chairman, Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu.

The rappers, in the song, called out INEC, its chairman and other political parties allegedly involved in the electoral malpractices in the just-concluded general elections.

According to Falz, he would rather go down fighting for justice than to remain silent and die from the failed system of the country.

The rapper, who joined the programme via Skype from the United Kingdom, explained that he was not abroad because he was afraid of confrontation from state actors over the controversial song.

He said, “I knew that was going to come up when you announced that I was doing this from London. Like I said earlier on, this is not the first time, this is not the second time, this is not the third time.

“I have released tons of records that are very confrontational. And I was on ground. I’m always on ground when I released these records.

“It is not to say that I’m running anywhere. Absolutely not. Everyone know where to find me. If anyone wants to find me. But I have no reason to fear anything. And I always say this when people ask me ‘how do you do these things without any fear of consequences?’

“And this is the same answer that I always give: the kind of life we are living already is one which we are more or less fading away already. It’s not a meaningful life what we have in Nigeria as a country. Makesense Media reports,

“What’s the worst that could happen? It’s death. I don’t fear death. I would rather go down fighting for a just cause. I would rather be remembered as someone that lived a life that was meaningful rather than someone that for example was walking down the road and got run over by a danfo [bus] because he was driving recklessly.

“Or, someone that got a heart disease and could not save himself because there are no hospitals capable of saving him in Nigeria,” Falz added.

Politics / Airport Security Evacuate Man Protesting Tinubu’s Inauguration From Plane by phosky(m): 5:35pm On Apr 01, 2023
Airport security evacuate man protesting Tinubu’s inauguration from plane

On Friday evening, an unidentified man was carried off an Abuja to Lagos flight.

The lone middle-aged protester was said to have declared that President-elect Bola Tinubu should not be sworn in as President on May 29.

According to the video that made it way online, it took the efforts of no fewer than six airport security officers to evacuate him after he had been stuck on the plane for more than an hour, as the 6pm flight had yet to take off as of 7pm.

As he was being carried down the aisle, the man could be heard shouting, “Obidients you’re here. They are doing this to me. Obidients you’re here, I am naked. Obidients you’re here, I am going naked.”

No one could approach him because officials from the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria and Ibom Air surrounded him.

Makesense Media reported on Thursday that the Department of State Services had identified some unnamed key players planning for an interim government in the country.

Describing the plan as an aberration, the DSS said such would undermine civil rule as well as plunge the country into an avoidable crisis.

This was contained in a statement by the spokesperson for the service, Peter Afunanya.

However, the 36 state governors under the aegis of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum Friday requested the DSS to as a matter of urgency arrest and prosecute those involved in the plot to put in place an interim government as a replacement for the nation’s democratic system.

The NGF also warned the DSS against issuing statements without arrest, noting that such could lead to heating up the polity.

This was disclosed in a statement released by the forum’s Chairman and Governor of Sokoto State, Aminu Tambuwal, on Friday.

How clergy offended God in 2023 elections – Mbaka

The Spiritual Director of Adoration Ministry Enugu, Rev Fr. Ejike Mbaka, has said that the clergy of all Christian denominations in Nigeria offended God in different positions they took during the 2023 general election.

Mbaka apologised to God on behalf of all the clergy to forgive the priests who took different ways offensive to the church and God in the process to the general election.

The Charismatic Catholic Priest, however, said he would not talk much of politics so as not to be sent back to the Monastery again.

He stated these while celebrating the Catholic mothering Sunday for the Adoration mothers, on Sunday at the Adoration ground, Umuchigbo-Nike Enugu.

He prayed for Nigerian women and their families, asking God not to allow blessings to depart from their families.

Mbaka whose mother also celebrated the Mass said that motherhood comes with challenges and made special tributes to his mother whom he discloses laboured much during his birth, noting that it was good his mother is still alife to witness his life and times.

On the political scene, Mbaka said: “I apologise on behalf of all the priests and pastors in our shortcomings, particularly during the election and in this political period. We have offended God in the process but let God forgive us because we got it wrong.

“The power of God is above any rigging, the country is rotten, let us use the times we are expensing for politicking to search for solutions to our problems. Politics is now dividing Nigerians and all these politicians I call them political hawks and vultures.”

Politics / Niger Delta Ex-agitators To Protest Over Stipend Stoppage by phosky(m): 8:56am On Mar 27, 2023
Niger Delta ex-agitators to protest over stipend stoppage

Over 300 ex-agitators from the Niger Delta have entered the Federal Capital Territory of Abuja ahead of a planned protest.

According to a source, they plan to take to the streets to protest the suspension of their monthly N65,000 stipends following the appointment of Maj-Gen Barry Tariye Ndiomu (retd.) as Interim Administrator of the Presidential Amnesty Programme.

The first, second, and third phases of the PAP comprised the mass influx of ex-agitators.

“The Niger Delta ex-agitators have vowed to occupy the nation’s capital for a long term protest if the government does not replace Ndiomu with a Niger Deltan who understands the plight of the people of the region, especially the ex-agitators,” the source said.

Other demands included the immediate suspension of the planned cooperatives by the PAP and restoration of the training programmes, both academic and non-academic.

“Let the ex-agitators take the centre stage in the decision-making process in the Amnesty Office, not strangers who do not know the in and out of the struggle in the Niger Delta.

“The protest in the nation’s capital shall continue until all these things are met, before we will leave the streets of Abuja”, the source added.

When contacted, the Special Assistant on Media in the Amnesty Office, Thomas Peretu, asked newsmen the details and reasons for the proposed protest.

After being told, he said, “I’m in the church now”, and ended the call.

Crime / Four Nigerian Nationals Arrested In India For Allegedly Duping Businessmen Onlin by phosky(m): 8:12am On Mar 24, 2023
Four Nigerian nationals arrested in India for allegedly duping businessmen online

Four Nigerian nationals have been arrested by the Cyber Crime Wing of Greater Chennai Police in Tamil Nadu, India, for allegedly duping businessmen online.

The suspects were said to have cheated many businessmen in the city and elsewhere in the State by promising good returns on their investments.

The police arrested the four suspects, Okories Godswill Sainasa, 32, Uche John Imeka, 47, Godwin Immanuel, 32, and Eposie Uchenna Stanley, 32, who were operating in Kharghar, a suburb of Navi Mumbai, and brought them to Chennai on Thursday, March 23, 2023.

According to the police, the accused Nigerian nationals worked in teams and contacted the businessmen first through LinkedIn. Makesense media reports,

One of the teams with a fake profile picture of a white woman in the name of Nora Morrison from Canada on WhatsApp status approached the victim, a businessman from Kolathur.

She claimed to be the Chief Executive Officer of a Canada-based pharmaceutical firm and offered good commission for supplying herbal oil. Then the others got in touch with her.

The businessman made online transfers in December 2022 for ₹33 lakh to the account mentioned by fraudsters towards procuring oil from Delhi and supplying it to Canada. He did not receive any commission as promised and he lost his money as the business proponents went incommunicado.

Following a complaint, a special team of police led by Cyber Crime Wing inspector T. Vinodhkumar analysed the call records, mails and other electronic communications and traced down the suspects near Mumbai.

Mr. Vinodh Kumar said, “Our team conducted an investigation for 10 days with help of Navi Mumbai police and searched the house of suspects in Kharghar police station limits and arrested four of them.”

Explaining the modus operandi of the gang, the officer said it had four teams posing as the executives, purchase managers, suppliers and quality control.

In reality, all teams were Nigerian nationals operating from a home in Navi Mumbai. They never made video calls or voice calls to victims in Chennai.

He added that they mainly targeted people in import-export business and who had registered their details on business portals and social media platforms.

Sports / How Arsenal Missed Signing Osimhen For Free by phosky(m): 8:25am On Mar 16, 2023
How Arsenal missed signing Osimhen for free

Arsenal missed out on a golden opportunity to sign prolific striker Victor Osimhen in 2016 and yet failed to get him for free in January 2017, when he left Nigeria to join Bundesliga outfit Wolfsburg.

The 24-year-old Nigerian striker has been making headlines for his outstanding performances with Napoli since joining the Serie A side in 2020.

Osimhen made headlines in 2015 when he scored 10 goals to help Nigeria win the U-17 World Cup for a record fifth time. The young striker claimed the Golden Boot for his efforts, with Wolfsburg and Arsenal battling for his signature. Makesense media reports,

Wolfsburg won that battle in January 2016, as they agreed to a pre-contract deal with Osimhen. The move was finalised in January 2017. Arsenal were left to pay for not acting on time. Osimhen explained that he was actually invited to the Emirates by the English giants in February 2016.

“It’s true that a big team like Arsenal wanted me and I feel honoured to be invited over,” Osimhen told BBC Sport. “But personally I feel Wolfsburg is a ladder for me to reach my professional goals.

Yes Arsenal is a good team for young players but Wolfsburg is the best club for me. This is the best place for me to learn and develop because my heart is here with Wolfsburg… The club’s plan for my career is very encouraging and I believe with God on my side I can grow to become one of the best players in the world.”

Osimhen did not register a senior goal for Wolfsburg, but he’s flourished since leaving the German club, initially on loan, in the summer of 2018. The forward has scored goals for fun at Belgian side Charleroi, French outfit Lille and Champions League hopefuls Napoli.

Now Arsenal, Manchester United and Chelsea are both expected to enter the transfer market this summer to sign a striker

Reports in Italy earlier this month suggested Premier League giants United were the favourites to sign the talent, but he won’t come cheap, as they might have to pay €150m to grab the in-form striker.

El- Rufai Decries Poor Voter Turnout in Kaduna

Concern over the poor voter turnout in Kaduna State’s presidential and national assembly elections has been voiced by Governor Nasir El-Rufai.

The governor urged people to vote in a chat with media when he was waiting to cast his ballot at PU 024, Anguwan Sarki GRA, Kaduna North LGA.

With the emphasis that “so far everything appears orderly across the state, all the reports we are getting are favorable,” he praised INEC for improvements to the voting process.

The governor however said, “This morning, we got report of one incident in Southern Kaduna where BVAS and ballot boxes were snatched and in Soba where two ballot boxes were also snatched”.

While lamenting the poor turnout of voters, El-Rufai said, “My only concern is low voter turnout, people are not coming out to vote. And I want to appeal to everyone to please come out and vote, because you have once in four years opportunity to pick your leaders and you should take it seriously. Makesense Media report

“It is the leaders that you select today that will run the affairs of your country for the next four years. So, please don’t stay back at home, come out and vote. Politics / Instead Of Using Cash, Politicians Devise New Method To Buy Votes – EFCC by phosky(m): 9:33am On Feb 23, 2023
Instead of using cash, politicians devise new method to buy votes – EFCC

Less than three days to the general elections, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) says some politicians have come up with new ways to induce voters on election day.

According to EFCC Chairman, Abdulrasheed Bawa, intelligence at the commission’s disposal has shown that the said politicians are planning to buy votes in kind rather than with cash.

Bawa made this known on Wednesday during an interview on Channels Television’s amid the scarcity of the new naira notes experienced by Nigerians nationwide.

“We have intel that a lot of people have bought some items that they want [to use] to buy votes in kind not in cash. Some of these things are out there,” he stated.

“Politicians are also Nigerians. We too have a way of doing our own things. We have our own experiences in this as well.”

The EFCC boss asked all Nigerians to cooperate with the anti-graft agency in its efforts in fighting vote-buying in Saturday’s Presidential and National Assembly polls.

He also urged the citizens to vote for people with integrity and ethical standard into elective positions.

According to him, vote-buying is a serious issue that affects the future of Nigeria and its citizens and must be stopped by all means.

When asked what hurdle the commission is facing regarding vote-buying, Bawa said, “I think the hurdle is if Nigerians are not buying into what we are doing. I think that is the biggest hurdle. Makesense Media report,

“Once we are united on that front because the office of the citizen of the Federal Republic of Nigeria is the most powerful office in this country.

“We can all come together to ensure that the people we are voting into various elective positions are people with proven integrity and of higher ethical standard. The only way you can determine that those have genuinely sold themselves in what they will do is when they get into office.”

Business / Sales Shrink As Currency Traders Slash Consumers’ Disposable Income by phosky(m): 9:41pm On Feb 20, 2023
Sales Shrink As Currency Traders Slash Consumers’ Disposable Income

As economic hiccups continue to reduce purchasing power, and consumptions across all sectors of the economy, disposable income has shrunk with panic withdrawals from currency traders.

The charges imposed by money deposit banks and Point of Sales (PoS) on Nigerians who make use of their services for cash withdrawals is cutting into their purchasing power while putting more households in precarious conditions and biting harships.

Currently, PoS operators charge their customers an average of N2,000 on every N10,000 withdrawal. Similarly, most money deposit banks have programmed their ATMs to dispense only N1,000 and N2,000 per withdrawal to non-customers to charge N35 per on every withdrawal.

Against the backdrop of the Central Bank of Nigeria’s (CBN) monetary policy of redesigning N1000, N500 and N200 notes to control excessive cash in the economy, consumers across the country are currently experiencing untold hardship as a result of the apex bank’s inability to inject the amount of new notes commensurate with the old notes, which has almost been completely withdrawn from the economy.

In addition, the unavailability of fuel in rural and urban areas has plunged an average consumer in double jeopardy.

The ongoing crisis has, in no small measure, affected person-to-person, person-to-business and business-to-business transactions across Nigeria.

On a visit to Oke-Arin, a popular grocery market on Lagos Island, Makesense Media learnt that the market, which used to be bustling with wholesalers, retailers and consumers, has become a ghost of its old self.

Speaking with Makesense Media, a wholesaler, Mrs. Funmi Isijola who deals in wines and spirits, said it has been so difficult to even sell 10 cartons of wine in a day due to scarcity of cash and challenges they encountered while using online banking.

“The scarcity of cash is a big challenge for us traders. I normally sell almost hundreds of cartons of wine daily, but since this change of currency started, it has been difficult to make sales. We are just managing; I have not sold up to five packs as I am speaking with you right now.

that the government finds a solution to this policy before it gets out of hand,” she said.

Another trader, who sells beverages at the same market, stated that, sales have dropped drastically as people now prepare to buy essentials rather than what they can do away with.

“I still believe that my coming to market today will not be in vain because as it stands, I haven’t been able to make any sales since I opened the shop. Today, being Thursday, we don’t open until 10am, coupled with the low scarcity of cash and even fuel is really contributing to low sales,” she said.

Corroborating the Oke-Arin scenario, a market survey carried out at Ikorodu Market, saw traders lamenting on low sales. A visit to a butcher’s shop simply known as Mr. Akeem, also confirmed low sales.

“You can imagine that we that are selling meat are complaining about lack of sales. What should other people say? We the sellers don’t even have enough cash to buy cows from the abattoirs. Another problem we are having is the challenges of transferring money online. We have encountered so many failed transactions which has resulted in us not collecting transfers from our customers and even buying,” he lamented.

In the same development, a pharmacist also noted that sales dropped for some days because people don’t have enough cash to buy medication.

On a visit to Ogba Park in Ikeja Local Government, Lagos, Olabisi, a commuter, explained her ordeal in trying to get cash to move around. She narrated how she almost got stranded at the bus park because she didn’t have cash to pay for a bus fair.

“I don’t understand where we are going in this country; I could not pay for my transformation fair yesterday because I ran out of cash. I decided to use the ATM but it wasn’t dispensing, I went to a POS vendor who wanted to charge me N300 on N1,000. Edo govt extends free bus services

The Edo State government has announced an extension of its free bus service by all Edo City Transport Service buses to all its routes till Friday, February 24.

Makesense Media report gathered that, According to the statement made available by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Media Projects, Crusoe Osagie, the government said the extension became necessary because the cash crunch experienced by the people in the state has remained unabated.

the statement reads, “The Edo State Governor, His Excellency, Mr Godwin Obaseki, has extended the free bus service by all Edo City Transport Service (ECTS) buses till Friday, February 24, 2023.

“The extension became necessary because the cash crunch experienced by the people in the state has remained unabated.

While the government intensifies efforts to bring a lasting solution to this issue, the government calls on the people to remain calm and law-abiding as normalcy will be restored shortly.”

The Edo state government had on February 16 introduced a five-day free bus service to run till February 20 to alleviate the suffering brought on by the unavailability of the new naira to its citizens. However, due to the sustained crisis, the state, therefore, extended the free transport services till February 24.

Flying Eagles defeated in U-20 AFCON opening game

Senegal defeated Nigeria’s flying eagles 1-0 in the Under-20 AFCON Championship opener on Sunday in Cairo.

Five minutes before halftime at the Cairo International Stadium, striker Soulaymane Faye broke the scoreless tie.

With Lamine Camara and team captain Samba Diallo orchestrating the WAFU-A champions’ midfield play, the Young Lions of Teranga got off to a strong start.

Senegal immediately made their intentions known by wreaking havoc in the Nigerian penalty box with striker Pape Diallo.

On the half-hour mark, after Camara’s inviting delivery, Nigerian goalkeeper Nwosu denied Pape Diallo with a header.

Faye’s close-range finish resulted from the lanky forward being the quickest to respond to Pape Diop’s low effort, which Nwosu turned into his path.

Makense Media report that, The Flying Eagles pushed harder for the equalizer in the second half, but Senegal defended well to keep a clean sheet, and Samba Diallo even came close to doubling their lead.

That was when his diving header missed the bottom corner of the Nigerian goal.

Changes by Nigeria in the second half, in the substitution of Halliru Sarki for Emmanuel Uchegbu and the introduction of Jude Sunday for Ibrahim Mohammad, could still not help matters.

To make matters worse, the Flying Eagles were reduced to 10 men following substitute Ahmed Abdullahi’s sending-off in the match’s closing stages.

The forward had replaced Olamilekan Adams, but a high-foot challenge on a Senegalese could only earn him a 90th-minute sending-off.

Senegal though missed two late chances earlier, through second-half substitute Mame Ngom.

He failed to hit the target twice when he beat the goalkeeper to the ball only to fire over the goal.

The Flying Eagles will now take on hosts Egypt on Wednesday at the same venue in their second group phase game.

The hosts had earlier in the day in the competition’s opening match drawn goalless with Mozambique.

Oba Of Ojo Speaks On Abetting Cultism, Criminality In Lagos

Oba Adeshina Raji, the traditional ruler of the Iba community in Ojo, near Lagos, has denied reports that he was aiding and abetting cultism and other criminalities in the area.

Raji denied the reports in response to what he called baseless allegations that he was involved in cult-related crimes in the area.

He said:

MY ATTENTION HAS BEEN DRAWN TO A MALICIOUS AND VICIOUS ALLEGATION TARGETED AT DENIGRATING MY IMAGE AND PERSONALITY.I AM A TRADITIONAL RULER WITH HIGH INTEGRITY AND I HAVE ZERO TOLERANCE FOR NONSENSE, ESPECIALLY CRIMES.

Raji maintained that some unscrupulous people are using social media to tarnish his image and that he is not associated with a specific person who has been linked to criminal activities in Iba town.

AM IN NO WAY CONNECTED TO SUCH A PERSON. I AM SURE THAT THE SOCIAL MEDIA POST IS THE HANDWRITING OF MISCHIEF MAKERS AND SUCCESS HATERS, WHO ARE ONLY GOOD AT BREWING TENSIONS AND DOWNGRADING FELLOW HUMANS.MY HATRED FOR CRIMINALITY HAS SUSTAINED MY INITIATIVE TO IMPROVE SECURITY IN MY COMMUNITY, MAKING ME DONATE SOME ITEMS SUCH AS VEHICLES TO TRACK CRIMINALS IN THE IBA COMMUNITY.I HAVE ALSO SINGLE-HANDEDLY BUILT A MAGISTRATES’ COURT IN MY COMMUNITY WHICH I HANDED OVER TO THE LAGOS STATE GOVERNMENT.SO, IF I AM AIDING AND ABETTING CRIMINALS, WOULD I HAVE DONE ALL THAT? I AM A KING WHO LOVES PEACE AND HATES VIOLENCE.

Raji recalled that the allegation against him surfaced on social media on February 12th, where he was accused of using a cultist known only as “Sholly” to commit crimes in Iba town.

The traditional ruler, who is also the Chairman of the Lagos State Parks and Garage Administrators, stated that he would never support criminality.

He, however, pleaded with Lagos State security agencies, including the State Security Service and the police, to intervene in the matter and apprehend those responsible for tarnishing his image.

Oba of Lagos speaks on declining Peter Obi’s request to visit him

The Oba of Lagos, Rilwan Akiolu says he bears no grudges and harbours no resentment towards the Igbo.

The monarch said this in reaction to his purported rejection of Labour Party, LP, Presidential candidate, Peter Obi, request to visit him.

A female supporter of the Labour party candidate had accused the monarch of rejecting the moves by Peter Obi to visit him at his Iduganran palace, Lagos Island.

Speaking when the former Lagos Commissioner of Police, CP, Abiodun Alabi paid him a courtesy visit in his place in the company of the new Commissioner of Police, Idowu Owohunwa, Akiolu said Obi is free to visit him at his palace anytime he wishes to.

The revered monarch, while declaring that he has a cordial relationship with the Igbos in Lagos, added that the late President of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Chief George Obiozor, was his close friend.

Makesense Media report that, According to Akiolu, “Nobody has written to me that any presidential candidate is coming to visit me.

“If anybody writes to me, I cannot deny them but as far as Peter Obi is concerned, whom I see as a complete gentleman, he has not approached me.

“I was always with the late Ohanaeze President, Obiazor, every weekend when he was alive and anytime I travelled to New York, he would always come to pick me up at the airport.

“So, I have no grudge against any Igbo man. I respect people and I don’t fear anybody,” Akiolu said.

He commended the former Lagos CP, Alabi for his performances during his tenure and urged the new CP to take the welfare of the police under him seriously and be nice to the people.

“Try to hold your religion. If you are a Christian or Muslim, practice your religion and look after the welfare of the people under you.

“I don’t take nonsense but I don’t have reservoirs of knowledge. From what I know about you, you will do well.

“Anything you do, do it with honesty. What you don’t want the citizens to do to you, don’t do it to them. I am giving you the assurance that we will cooperate with you,” Akiolu told the new CP.

Earlier, the Owhohunwa had told Akiolu he was at his palace to seek his royal blessings and professional advice.

According to him, “I have come for the professional aspect. You retired from the police service at one of the highest levels.

“The rich knowledge we can get from you is vital for my performance and I want to appeal to you to consider me as your son both from the traditional perspective and professional perspective and accept me with open hands.

“Whenever, I come, whenever I have challenges in the course of my duty, I should have a father to turn to. I will work to secure stable security for Lagos State, ” he said

2023 election: 400,000 security personnel to be deployed nationwide – IGP

The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Alkali Baba Usman, said over 400,000 security personnel would be deployed for the smooth conduct of the general elections across the country.

The IGP made the disclosure yesterday at the 66th Ministerial Media Briefing organised by the Presidential Communications Team at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, yesterday.

He said out of this number, the police would provide over 300,000 personnel, while the rest would be sourced from complementary security agencies in the country.

While listing fuel scarcity and cash crunch as threats against the conduct of the elections, Baba assured that the situation will stabilise before the commencement of the exercise.

“We are very sure the situation of cash and petrol will stabilise before the conduct of the election,” he stated.

Reports gathered that, He further informed that an intelligence unit has been put in place to track and apprehend those who may engage in vote buying and those who may want to disrupt the exercise.

He said: “In aid of our efficient and informed human operational and logistics deployment plan, we have undertaken an election security threat analysis, which identifies and prioritised possible threats to the electoral process, in terms of location and specific personalities and groups across the 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

“The force is also leveraging on the outcome of similar exercises undertaken and shared with us by the Department of State Services and civil society organisations, particularly CLEEN Foundation. The operational plan of the Force is a product of these initiatives.

“From INEC records, there exists 176,846 polling units in 8,809 wards of the 36 states of the federation and FCT, where the elections will be conducted. The Nigeria Police, with the support of other security agencies, has perfected plans to deploy, in a coordinated and collaborative manner, to cover all these locations.

“The deployment will cover the National Collation Centre in Abuja, as well as other collation centres across states of the federation, the FCT and the 774 local areas of the federation. In view of the above, Nigeria police will deploy 310,973 personnel for the elections security operations.

This will comprise the conventional policemen, the mobile policemen, the special counterterrorism unit, the special forces, intelligence response team and other sections of the police.

“The manpower requirement for this exercise will be complemented by the military and other security agencies. In this regard, aside from the military and the DSS, other security agencies will contribute a total of 93,495 personnel for the election security operations.

“These include the Nigrian Security and Civil Defence, who will deploy, through the police, 151,000 personnel; the Federal Road Safety Corps, 21,000; Nigerian Correctional Service, 11,336; the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, 9,447; Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, 350, totalling 404,106 to police the elections.

“With this layout, a minimum of, at least, two personnel, drawn from the above agencies, will be jointly deployed to man each of the polling units across the country, while the armed personnel will secure the public space, INEC facilities, vulnerable locations, border areas, as well as undertake armed escort duties for INEC personnel, materials and local and international observers.

“We, also, expect the military to complement this situation by providing armed protection to critical national assets, ensuring that the enforcement of movements are curtailed through the blocking of exit points and entry points to various states, local governments and so forth.”

On specific plans to stop those who may disrupt the exercise as well as deter vote buyers, Baba disclosed that a unique technical intelligence assets and special intelligence unit of the police, working with other security agencies and INEC, are in place to track and apprehend those who may plan to disrupt the exercise or intimidate vote buyers.

He said: “As part of efforts to address the menace of votes selling and buying, a special intelligence unit of the force has been constituted to clandestinely monitor the trend and work with EFCC, ICPC and INEC in identifying the network that may be involved in this illegality and apprehend them where possible.

“In addition, the unique technical intelligence assets of the force are also being deployed towards identifying adverse elements that may be planning to disrupt the process.

“Through this initiative, such elements will be identified real time, geo-located, isolated, arrested and brought to justice.”

Travelers Stuck As Nigerian Railway Corporation Rejects Old Naira Notes

The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has refused to sell tickets to passengers carrying old Naira notes, stranding them.

According to Makesense Pm reports, the early morning train to Ibadan was nearly disrupted by protests following the NRC’s initial refusal to collect old Naira notes.

WHEN THE EARLY MORNING PASSENGERS BECAME AGITATED AND TENSION WAS BREWING, THE NRC WAS FORCED TO ACCEPT OLD NAIRA NOTES AND THE EARLY MORNING TRAIN WAS THEN ALLOWED TO LEAVE FOR IBADAN IN PEACE.HOWEVER, THIS AFTERNOON, WE WERE DIRECTED NOT TO COLLECT THE OLD NAIRA NOTES. THE 4 PM TRAIN JUST LEFT FOR IBADAN AND ABOUT TEN PASSENGERS COULDN’T BOARD BECAUSE THEY DIDN’T HAVE THE NEW NAIRA NOTES.WHY THERE WAS SO MUCH CONFUSION WITH THE MORNING TRAIN WAS BECAUSE THE NUMBER OF PASSENGERS WITH OLD NAIRA NOTES FAR OUTWEIGH THE NUMBER OF THOSE WITH NEW NAIRA NOTES. BUT THIS AFTERNOON TRAIN THAT LEFT AROUND 4 PM DIDN’T EXPERIENCE SUCH CONFUSION BECAUSE ONLY TEN PASSENGERS HAD OLD NAIRA NOTES WITH THEM.WHAT WILL HAPPEN TOMORROW MORNING IS WHAT WE DON’T KNOW SINCE WE HAVE BEEN DIRECTED NOT TO COLLECT THE OLD NAIRA NOTES.WE HAVE SINCE THE SUSPENDED COLLECTION OF OLD NAIRA NOTES ON THE LAGOS MASS TRANSIT TRAINS. THE DECISION TO SUSPEND COLLECTION OF OLD NAIRA NOTES ONBOARD THE LAGOS-IBADAN TRAIN JUST STARTED YESTERDAY AFTERNOON, AN NRC WORKER WHO WOULDN’T WANT HER NAME IN PRINT TOLD THE TRIBUNE ONLINE.

Speaking on the development, Mr. Eric Umezurike, Managing Director of First Fit Nigeria Limited and a train passenger, said that a Federal Government agency like the Nigerian Railway Corporation is better positioned to collect old naira notes and seamlessly exchange them with its sister agency, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

According to him;

IF A GOVERNMENT AGENCY IS REJECTING OLD NAIRA NOTES AT A PERIOD WHEN THE CASE WAS STILL PENDING IN COURT, WHAT WOULD BE THE EXPECTATIONS FROM MARKET WOMEN SUPERMARKETS AND PETROL ATTENDANTS.

Speaking to journalists at Mobolaji Johnson Station, some of the passengers who were unable to board the 4 p.m. train vowed to stage protests at the train station the next time they were denied access due to the issue of old Naira notes.

WE WON’T TAKE THIS LIGHTLY NEXT TIME WE COME HERE. THE TRAIN IS GOVERNMENT PROPERTY AND BELONGS TO ALL OF US BECAUSE THEY WERE BUILT WITH TAXPAYER’S MONEY. EVEN IF GOVERNMENT COLLECT LOANS TO BUILD THE TRAINS, THE GOVERNMENT IS PAYING BACK THOSE LOANS WITH TAXPAYER MONEY.WE WON’T TAKE IT LIGHTLY NEXT TIME WE COME HERE AND THEY (NRC) REFUSE TO ALLOW US TO BOARD BECAUSE OF OLD NAIRA NOTES ISSUE, SOME OF THE PASSENGERS LAMENTED.

When contacted, NRC Lagos District Manager Engineer Augustine Arisa said he couldn’t comment because he was in Papalanto, Ogun State, for routine checks on the railway station.

I AM NOT IN LAGOS NOW. I CANNOT CONFIRM IF IT’S TRUE WE ARE NOT COLLECTING THE OLD NAIRA NOTES. I AM IN PAPALANTO, OGUN STATE FOR SOME ROUTINE MAINTENANCE WORKS, ARISA SAID.

Angry residents in Warri, Delta state filed out this morning and destroyed a POS operator’s stand. According to the protesters, POS operators are extorting them due to the scarcity of New Naira notes.

Prior to the scarcity, POS operators charged N100 for every N5000 withdrawn but with the current scarcity of Naira notes, they charge as much as N1500 for every N5000 withdrawn.

Some of the POS operators claim they have to make their money back as they allegedly purchase the Naira notes from some bankers as well as fuel station attendants.
