HealthNegative Body Image: A Danger For Adolescent Girls by phunminiyi(op): 4:13pm On Sep 29, 2016
Body image is an individual’s perception of his or her own body. It involves what we think and how we feel about our body, height, shape, size, and weight. It can also mean how we think others see us. Body image can either be positive or negative. According to statistics, body image especially among females has been largely negative. Befort and Rickard (2003) stated that women look to others for evidence of their competence more than did men, and therefore more easily influenced by all types of feedback. Negative Body Image A negative body image is a distorted perception of the whole or some parts of the body unlike they really are. It is a personal conviction that one’s body size or shape does not meet up to a standard. It involves a feeling of awkwardness in one’s body. Negative body image is characterized by irrational believe of being too fat, intense fear of obesity and weight gain, obsessive self scrutiny in mirror, thinking degrading comments about one’s body, frequent comparison of one’s body shape and size to other people’s, etc. According to a source, more than 90% of girls-15 to 17 years- want to change at least one aspect of their physical appearance, with body weight ranking highest. However, some girls realize that they are thin but are habitually haunted by certain parts of their body they believe to be fat like the breasts, stomach, thighs, and buttocks. Causes of Negative Body Image – Television programs, billboard advertisement, magazine pictures, movies, and newspaper have in a never-ending manner equated attractiveness, happiness, love, competence, and even success to having an ultraslim body. Many adolescents who wish to achieve all these therefore set unrealistic body standard for themselves. – A comment from a well meaning friend or relative suggesting that a person seems to be gaining weight can result in having a negative image of the body especially among those seeking social acceptance. – Pressure of having to maintain a certain weight to look attractive or competent on a job can also lead to having both unrealistic and negative body image. For example, this is predominant among receptionists, waitresses, models, air hostesses, etc. – Even children dolls often portray an extremely thin and distorted body image. This can make children set an unhealthy body standard for later years. Many people are overly vulnerable to these influences for genetic, psychological, and physical reasons and may be more likely than others to develop unhealthy behaviours. Unhealthy Behaviours Because of their intense fear of becoming fat resulting from how they perceive their body, many adolescent girls develop the following harmful behaviours: – Obsession to be thin – Helplessness in the presence of food – Pretending to eat and lying about eating – Leaving table immediately after eating so that they can vomit – Taking appetite suppressants – Fasting and rigid dieting – Excessive use of laxatives, diuretics or enemas – Excessive exercise with weight loss goal The above behaviours are characteristic symptoms of some eating disorder like Anorexia nervosa, Bulimia nervosa, etc. which can negatively affect health. Health Consequences Contrary to the general belief, people with negative body image with its resultant unhealthy behaviour are greatly susceptible to having a compromised nutritional status and many health problems. These include: – Lowered body temperature and cold intolerance caused by loss of fat insulation – Slower metabolic rate as a result of decreased synthesis of thyroid hormone – Iron deficiency anemia from a deficient nutrient intake – Skin with many bruises because of the loss of protection from fat layer normally present under the skin – Low white blood cell count caused by deficient nutrient intake which increases the risk of infection. -Low blood potassium caused by deficient nutrient intake, loss of potassium from vomiting, use of some types of diuretics. This increases the risk of heart rhythmic disturbances – Loss of menstrual period because of low body weight and low body fat content. – Eventual loss of teeth caused by acid erosion from frequent vomiting – Muscle tears and stress fractures in athletes because of decreased bone and muscle mass BOTTOM LINE: having a negative body image cannot benefit anyone but can rather be at a cost that may too expensive to pay, in terms of poor health, or even death in some cases. It is therefore wise to have a positive and realistic perspective our body image and eat adequately to meet our energy and nutrients need. Reference Befort , C.A. & Rickard, K.M. HealthBreastfeeding... What Can FATHERS Do? by phunminiyi(op): 9:14pm On May 14, 2016
It's true that fathers do not possess the milk producing factory necessary for an infant's growth and development. It is also true that fathers can contribute significantly to the success of breastfeeding. How so?
It is important for fathers to be present and attentive to the partners while breastfeeding.
As we all know, breastfeeding is a process that requires a mothers full attention. During this period, keeping up with other household responsibilities may become very difficult. Fathers/husband's can therefore assist in tasks including taking care other non breastfeeding activities, care of older children, cooking, and cleaning of the house.
Fathers can assist with breastfeeding at night. For example, bringing the baby to the mother.
Mothers encounter a lot of problems during the process of breastfeeding. This may include sore on the breast, pain, breast engorgement. Fathers can assist their wives by seeking professional support on how the problems can be solved.
Sometimes, these problems can make mothers lose interest in breastfeeding. Fathers can encourage their partners at this point.
Since breastfeeding is an exhausting process, it is important to understand their partners about not having sex or about touching their breasts.
Fathers can also support breastfeeding by praising their partners for breastfeeding and let them know that they are doing a beautiful and worthwhile thing.
Fathers can also listen to and encourage their partners when they feel frustrated and discouraged about breastfeeding.
Fathers can also speak up and support their partners or defend breastfeeding when someone makes a negative breastfeeding comments.
Fathers can discourage partners desire to stop breastfeeding.
Your support for breastfeeding is a support for a better tomorrow. Show that you are concerned. Show that you care... and breastfeeding will be easier for your wife. Remember, you started it together, don't leave her to it. It is your responsibility.

HealthHYGEINE- Is It Important? by phunminiyi(op): 8:36pm On May 14, 2016
Proper hygiene is very important when it comes to food preparation. Without washing hands and kitchen tools, diseases may easily spread. Importance of cleanliness related to food starts with the preparation of food. The raw substances used for cooking should be washed thoroughly with water before being cooked. Greater attention is needed for something which would be consumed raw, as salads or fruits. If possible, they should be cleaned with hot water. This is because there is risk of contamination of the vegetables or fruits with soil containing infectious germs.
HealthBreastfeeding... A Key To A Better Tomorrow by phunminiyi(op): 8:12pm On May 14, 2016
Experts believe that only 17% of Nigerian babies are
exclusively breastfed. While many mothers breastfeed
their children, most also give their infants other liquids. This has led to the increased rate of infant malnutrition and consequently increased rate of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). Many mothers have been the major cause of their infants' death as result of their my-breast-must-not-sag notion and their ignorance of breastfeeding as major determinant of infants health and survival.
Fathers are also to be blamed because of their i-don't-care attitude and lack of support for their partners during. It's true you can't breastfeed your babies, but there are many things you can do to support your partners.
Now is the time for measure to be taken to save our future generation. Breastfeeding is the key. Nothing can adequately substitute for breast milk as the ideal food of infant. Breast milk is not not expensive because you don't have to buy it. It does not require any preparation. There is no need for measurement or mixing. It contains all nutrients, and hormones needed for infants growth and development. Breast milk also contains antibodies that can protect the infant against infections.
Breastfeeding is also beneficial for mothers. It can prevent ovarian cancer, it enhances the contraction of the uterus and reduces bleeding. Breastfeeding can also serve as a natural child spacing technique.
The future of our infants is in our hands. Let's us stand up for breastfeeding. You have in you an adequate of what is needed to make your infant grow healthy. Don't say you were not told

HealthAre You Food Secure? by phunminiyi(op): 9:09am On Mar 28, 2016
what is food security?
Food security exists when ALL PEOPLE at ALL TIMES, have physical, social, and economic ACCESS to SUFFICIENT, and NUTRITIOUS food to meet their DIETARY NEEDS and FOOD PREFERENCE for an active and healthy life.

What are the pillars of Food security?
AVAILABILITY: sufficient quantities of Food available on a consistent basis
ACCESS: having sufficient resources to obtain appropriate foods for a nutritious diet
UTILIZATION: appropriate use based on knowledge of basic nutrition and care, as well as adequate water and sanitation
SUSTAINABILITY: continuous availability, access, and utilization of healthy food at all times for an active and healthy life
****I have enough money to buy food, then I am food secured***
If your purchase and consumption of food is not based on knowledge of basic nutrition, sanitation, and care...then you are just eating, You are not food secured.
The ultimate goal of eating is not just for the fun of it nor is it for our stomach to get filled. It is rather to provide the body cells with needed nutrient for growth and health.
Food security can be measured at both Individual and household level using various indicators.
Are you food secure? Let's here from you

FoodRe: What Can I Eat To Gain Weight ? by phunminiyi(m): 9:37am On Mar 13, 2016
I think the most important questions to ask is why do you want to gain weight? Have someone conducted Nutrition assessment on you? These questions are important because prescription of diet for weight gain or weight loss are based on some measured parameters of the body. It can only be individualized. If any prescription is made without these parameters, it may pose another challenge to your nutritional status.
HealthYou Can Know Your Daily Energy Need by phunminiyi(op): 10:15am On Mar 12, 2016
Are you concerned about how much to eat without eating too little or too much? Then, you are in the right place. A person's daily energy intake is dependent on his/her Ideal body weight( height in cm -100), and activity level. It is important to note that a person's Ideal body weight is different from his/her current body weight. This is because a person's current may be reflecting past poor eating habits which has resulted into undernutrition(chronic energy deficiency) or overnutrition (obesity). It is therefore dangerous to base one's daily energy need on one's current body weight. Basing it on Ideal Body Weight which is an index of what a person should weigh at a particular height is safer.
Furthermore, a person can be sedentary(office secretary), normal(students), or active(manual workers in building construction) with a value of 25,30, and 35 respectively.
Now is the time to determine your daily energy need. For example, your height is 1.5m/150cm, you are a student(normal activity=30), and have a current body weight of 70kg.
Your daily energy need will be: Ideal Body Weight* activity level
Your Ideal Body Weight= your height in cm(150)- 100
150-100=50kg
Activity level for a student is normal= 30
Therefore your daily energy need in kilocalories= 50*30
=1500kcal of energy per day.
NOTE: In the calculation, the current body weight is not used because it is not reliable. Ideal body weight was used in place of it.
For a layman, the 1500kcal need of energy is still not clear enough. How can the kilocalorie value be converted to its equivalent amount of food in gram? The next post will explain.

HealthDietary Habit And Health by phunminiyi(op): 11:51pm On Jan 02, 2016

“Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants.” With these few words, author Michael Pollan encapsulates simple, time-tested dietary advice. What does he mean?
○ Eat fresh foods. Concentrate on eating “real” food—whole, fresh foods that people have been enjoying for millenniums—rather than modern processed foods. Commercially prepackaged foods and fast food from chain restaurants usually contain high levels of sugar, salt, and fat, which are associated with heart disease, stroke, cancer, and other serious illnesses. When cooking, try steaming, baking, and broiling instead of frying. Try using more herbs and spices to cut down on salt. Make sure meats are properly cooked, and never eat spoiled food.
○ Do not eat too much. The World Health Organization reports a dangerous worldwide increase in overweight and obese people, often the result of overeating. One study found that in parts of Africa, “there are more children who are overweight than malnourished.” Obese children are at risk of present as well as future health problems, including diabetes. Parents, set a good example for your children by limiting your own portions.
○ Eat mostly plants. A balanced plate favors a variety of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains over meats and starches. Once or twice a week, try substituting fish for meat. Reduce refined foods such as pasta, white bread, and white rice, which have been stripped of much of their nutritional value. But avoid potentially dangerous fad diets. Parents, protect your children’s health by helping them to acquire a taste for foods that are healthful. For example, give them nuts and thoroughly washed fresh fruits and vegetables for snacks instead of chips or candy.
○ Drink plenty of fluids. Adults and children need to drink plenty of water and other unsweetened liquids every day. Drink more of these during hot weather and when doing heavy physical work and exercise. Such liquids aid digestion, cleanse your body of poisons, make for healthier skin, and promote weight loss. They help you to feel and look your best. Avoid drinking excessive amounts of alcohol and too many sweetened drinks. One soft drink a day can add 15 pounds (6.8 kg) to your weight in a year.
In some lands, obtaining clean water can be hard work and is expensive. Yet, drinking it is vital. Tainted water needs to be boiled or chemically treated. Dirty water is said to kill more people than wars or earthquakes; it reportedly kills 4,000 children a day. For infants, the World Health Organization recommends only breast-feeding for the first six months, then breast-feeding plus some other foods until at least the age of two.
HealthNever Shake A Baby! by phunminiyi(op): 12:36am On Jan 02, 2016
Vigorously shaking a baby causes a sudden whiplash motion that “can cause bleeding inside the head and increased pressure on the brain, causing it to pull apart,” says the Toronto Star newspaper. Since a baby’s muscles are not fully developed and brain tissue is exceptionally fragile, “shaking a baby for only a few seconds can injure for life. Injuries can include brain swelling and damage, cerebral palsy, mental retardation, developmental delays, blindness, hearing loss, paralysis and death.” Dr. James King, a pediatrician at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario, has researched the effects of shaking babies. He says that the public needs to be educated, as in many cases the injuries are not readily apparent and the baby may be diagnosed as having a flu or a viral illness. “The message that you should never shake a baby has to go out and be loud and clear,” says Dr. King. “New parents have to know this.”

HealthCoffee Dilemma by phunminiyi(op): 11:53pm On Jan 01, 2016
OVER 1,500,000,000 cups a day! According to a recent estimate, that is how much coffee the world drinks. This vast consumption has persisted despite repeated warnings from scientists over the years that coffee drinkers face a virtual plethora of hazards, ranging from heart disease to diabetes and even various types of cancer. Why is it, then, that so few coffee drinkers have dropped their cups and run from the drink?
Over the past 40 years, scientists have published more than five hundred reports on the effects of coffee drinking. But so far their conclusions have been, well, inconclusive. Why? For one thing, coffee is more complex than it looks. A cup of coffee may contain as many as five hundred naturally occurring chemicals. Yet, most studies focus on just one ingredient, the stimulant caffeine.
In some people, caffeine can cause sleeplessness and irritability or make it difficult to concentrate. But what of cancer? The consumer magazine Which? reports: “For virtually every study demonstrating a possible link [between caffeine and cancer], there is another with contradictory findings.” Small wonder, then, that a London coffee analyst reports that among the general public, there has been “no sort of health move away from coffee at all.” Besides, many know that tea, cocoa, and cola drinks also contain caffeine. In fact, the magazine Which? notes that “weight for weight, tea contains more caffeine than coffee, but less weight is used, in general, to brew a cup of tea.”
Still, there are a few cautions that a coffee drinker may wish to note. The Times of London recently cited this finding from a Dutch report: “Coffee in which the boiling water and grounds are mixed directly can increase cholesterol levels by 10 per cent, compared with drinking filtered coffee or no coffee at all.” Cholesterol is a well-known contributor to heart disease. In another issue, The Times quoted a leading British nutritionist as saying: ‘Regular coffee drinkers should always have a fresh cup and avoid a stewed or boiled brew.’
If the experts agree on anything when it comes to coffee, it is moderation. Doctors generally recommend that people should drink no more than six cups (or four mugs) of coffee in a day. Those with such health problems as heart or kidney disease or high blood pressure should have less than that. And pregnant women or those who breast-feed their babies should have no more than one cup a day.
HealthHumour And Health by phunminiyi(op): 11:18pm On Jan 01, 2016
Properly used, humor has much value. In fact, evidence is slowly accumulating that laughter may even serve as a therapeutic tool. It is known that the act of laughing gives a healthy massage to one’s internal organs. Furthermore, according to American Health magazine, some “researchers think laughter may empower the immune system.” The magazine then quotes immunologist Lee S. Berk as saying: “Negative emotions can manipulate the immune system, and it now seems positive ones can do something similar.” This underscores the wisdom of this statement
: “A heart that is joyful does good as a curer.”
In hopes of utilizing the healing power of humor, some hospitals have set up so-called laughter rooms in which patients can play games, watch funny movies, listen to jokes, or simply visit with relatives in a more cheerful atmosphere. Can you put humor to work yourself? Say you have a sick friend or relative in the hospital. Why not brighten that ailing one’s outlook by giving him or her a humorous book or funny card where that would be appropriate?
Laughter can also mitigate anger. Dr. R. B. Williams, Jr., says: “Being angry is bad for your health.” Similarly, one book says: “A calm heart is the life of the fleshly organism, but jealousy is rottenness to the bones.” Dr. Williams notes: “It’s hard to stay angry when you’re laughing.” Yes, seeing the humor in a situation is one of the most constructive ways of handling anger.
