Foreign AffairsTaiwan’s President Apologises, Minister Resigns Over Massive Power Blackout by PiQi(op): 3:42pm On Aug 16, 2017
The President of Taiwan, Tsai Ing-wen was forced to apologise for a nationwide power blackout caused by 'human error' at a major power station as four units broke down, which affected millions of households on Tuesday. The nationwide outage also led to the resignation of Taiwan's Economic Affairs Minister Lee Chih-kung.

“I, on behalf of the administration, deeply apologise for the inconvenience and worry caused. It should have not happened.” Tsai said at a meeting of her ruling Democratic Progressive Party’s Central Standing Committee in Taipei.

Massive blackouts that lasted several hours on Tuesday were caused by a malfunction at the Tatan Power Plant, in Taoyuan county, the largest natural gas facility in Taiwan.

The malfunction, caused by human error, affected the supply of 4.65 million kilowatts of electricity and approximately 6.68 million households in 17 cities and counties on the main island of Taiwan. Tsai called for a comprehensive review of the country’s “fragile power supply systems.’’

Chen Chin-te, Chairman of the state-run Taiwan Power Company and CPC Corporation Taiwan, a state-owned petroleum, natural gas, and gasoline company, said in a press conference on Wednesday that the human error was caused by a contractor’s failure to follow standard operating procedures.

Premier Lin Chuan, has ordered a probe to identify management problems in the state run power company.

The president equally promised to overhaul the power section, "we must reform the system. I will make this an important point for thorough inspection reforms in the future," she wrote on her Facebook account.

Ozubulu massacre: Alleged drug dealer ‘Bishop’ storms Nigeria, visits victims

The alleged drug dealer, Aloysius Ikegwuonu, who is named as one of the chief suspects of the devastating attack at St. Philip’s Catholic Church in Ozubulu, Anambra state has returned to the country.

Recall that the state governor, Willie Obiano, governor of Anambra, had after visiting the scene of the incident, said it was as a result of a feud between two brothers who are based abroad.

Investigating into the church attack which was carried out by a gunman is ongoing.

The gunman was said to have invaded the church in search of Ikegwuonu, popularly known as “Bishop,” who is said to be having a prolonged misunderstanding with a relative whose name is yet to be ascertained.

Although not much is known about Ikegwuonu, there are reports alleging that he is a drug dealer based in South Africa.

Despite the negative reputation, people in his community see him as a philanthropist.

Bishop has returned to Nigeria to visit the recuperating victims in the hospital. It is not clear if he would be invited for questioning by the police to assist with his account of the story.

Christianity EtcPope Francis Prays And Commiserates With Nigerian Over Church Attack by PiQi(op): 6:34pm On Aug 07, 2017
Pope Francis on Monday sent a message of condolences and prayed for Nigeria following an attack at St. Philip Catholic church, Ozulbulu in Anambra State, southeastern Nigeria. After the deadly attack in which at least 11 people were killed and 18 others were wounded when gunmen opened fire on worshippers who had gathered early on Sunday at the church.

Pope Francis in a telegram addressed to the Bishop of Nnewi, Bishop Hilary Paul Odili Okeke of Nnewi, Pope Francis said he was “deeply saddened to learn of the loss of life and injury following the violent attack on St. Philip’s Catholic Church, Ozubulu.”

The message, signed by Vatican Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the pope says he is “deeply saddened to learn of the loss of life and injury”. He extends his “heartfelt condolences” to the local bishop and to “all the faithful of the Diocese of Nnewi, in particular, the families of the deceased and all those affected by this tragedy.”

Police said they believe the attack may have been linked to drug trafficking and was carried out following a feud between local residents and a member of the community living outside Nigeria.

Some arrest have been made by the police and investigation has commenced in the hope of finding those responsible for the dastardly act.

PoliticsNew Minimum Wage: NASS Ready, Waiting For Executive – Saraki by PiQi(op): 2:45pm On Aug 04, 2017
The President of the Senate, Dr Bukola Saraki, said the National Assembly was ready to consider and pass a new Minimum Wage Bill whenever it was presented by the executive.

Saraki, who made this known when he featured in News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) Forum in Abuja, said that the senate was aware of the need to review the current minimum wage.

He said that all the indices upon which the last minimum wage of N18, 000 was approved had changed and that there was, therefore, no need leaving the wage unchanged.

He acknowledged that the sufferings of Nigerians were glaring, and said that the national assembly was only waiting for the executive to present a bill for a wage review.

“We are in support; we are waiting for the executive. We have told them to go ahead with the idea.

“I have said it myself and the Speaker of House of Representatives said it the last time that we are fully in support. We are waiting for the executive to make a move on it.

“We are prodding the executive to do that; we have done that many times and we are still doing that.

“It is justifiable to have a new minimum wage. How will it not be if you look at the challenges the people are going through.

“More so, all the indices have changed since then, and should that be the only index that should stay the same? It is not possible,” he said.

On the inability of some state governments to pay the current minimum wage, Saraki expressed optimism that all state governors were responsible and would key into a new wage when approved.

“I am not in the state but I don’t think that any chief executive or any governor will be irresponsible not to want to provide succour for his people.

“But, we have to understand that maybe they have challenges of affordability,” he said.

On the recent request for the report of the 2014 National Conference to be sent to the senate, he said that although the move had been lauded, it should not be assumed that all Nigerians supported in.

The president of the senate said that the upper chamber had learned to approach sensitive issues at a slow pace so that all Nigerians could understand and be carried along.

According to him, the most important thing is to look at those things that unite us as Nigerians and focus on them rather that the things that divide us.

He allayed fears some of the rejected issues in the Constitution amendment process made not be redressed, saying “We will cross that bridge when we get there.

“As I said in my opening remarks when we were talking about devolution, I think we should not aggregate or rush to conclude where all Nigerians are on issues.

“I think that we should try and ensure that we get everybody’s buy-in on very major issues like this.

“I want to re-emphasise that we need to be very sensitive on how we go about addressing these issues.

“That somebody is not on my own page does not mean that the person is not somebody I can engage with or do things with,’’ Saraki said.

“As I said, I cannot kick you out of Nigeria; you cannot push me out of Nigeria; this Nigeria belongs to all of us, we have chosen, in spite of all our diversities, to be one.

“What is needed now is the political skill, in spite of those things that divide us, to be able to come together in the things that are important to make a modern country.

“There is no point having a country that will not give opportunities for its people. That is why I believe that certain powers to the state will ensure and create better opportunities for everybody.

“But, there are some that might think otherwise, and the answer is not to stampede them to say `look, this is where we are, what is wrong with you’. It is not going to bring the result; it will even set us back,” he added.

HealthKitchen Sponges Harbour More Bacteria Than Toilets by PiQi(op): 2:33pm On Aug 04, 2017
Kitchen sponges are dirtier than toilets teeming with bacteria, researchers found. A group of researchers from the Faculty of Medical and Life Sciences, Institute of Precision Medicine (IPM), Microbiology and Hygiene Group, Furtwangen University in Germany conducted DNA analysis of 14 different kitchen sponges. The researchers said their study revealed "an amazing bacterial colonization of kitchen sponges, and visualized its extent for this common microbial hot spot for the first time."

Since sponges are moist almost all of the time and are made for absorption, they tend to pick up bacteria such as E. coli, salmonella and Staphylococcus when they are used to clean dishes, swab counters, or merely from hands touching them. The study stated, “Kitchen sponges are likely to collect, incubate and spread bacteria from and back onto kitchen surfaces, from where they might eventually find their way into the human body, e.g. via the human hands or contaminated food.”

The analysis revealed 362 different kinds of bacteria in the sponges. They discovered 118 genera of bacteria, most of which were not harmful. However, there were pathogens that could cause infections among humans. Sponges are also capable of spreading bacteria in places where it was not previously present.

The recommended ways to clean sponges thoroughly include microwaving them for a minute, soaking them in a bleach solution using hydrogen peroxide, ammonia, vinegar or isopropyl alcohol. All of these are said to kill at least 99.9% of bacteria. However, the researchers found that microwaving sponges does not kill all of the potentially harmful bacteria, and any sterilizing method only reduces bacteria content by 60%.

The study said, despite common misconception, it was demonstrated that kitchen environments host more microbes than toilets. Sponges are “the biggest reservoirs of active bacteria in the whole house,” the study said.

While most of the bacteria present are not harmful, there were pathogens that could lead to certain infections in humans. Sponges are also able to spread bacteria to other clean places.

Some bacteria are actually able to resist sanitation and increase instead of dying out. The best thing to do is to change kitchen sponges weekly to avoid contamination, the study concluded.

CareerRe: Corporate Affairs Commission Embarks On Indefinite Strike by PiQi(op): 2:09pm On Jul 18, 2017
PiQi:
Despite current Administration's drive to ease the burden of doing business in Nigeria, by signing new Executive orders and establishing the Presidential Enabling Business Environment Council headed by the Acting President, Yemi Osinbajo, the Corporate Affairs Commission yesterday commenced an indefinite strike over welfare related issues.

Vigil360 gathered that members of the Amalgamated Union of Public Corporation and Recreation Service Employees (AUPTRE), an umbrella body for staff of Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) had issued a twenty-one (21) day ultimatum to management of the Commission and Ministry of Trade and Investment to meet their demands or face indefinite action in May, 2017.

The ultimatum was issued after the Commission reneged on an earlier agreement. The agreement was also signed by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Trade and Investment, necessitating the suspension of a warning strike in May.

It was gathered that efforts by the Union to meet with the Registrar General, Mahmud Bello, who is billed to proceed on retirement by October failed on Monday before the visibly irked workers declared an indefinite strike.

Bello, who reportedly travelled to China in the past weeks, returned to the country on Sunday amidst speculation that he may have proceeded on pre-retirement leave. He resumed duties on Monday along with some Chinese to carry out a yet-to-be ascertained job in the Commission.

The Union accused the RG of being insensitive to their plight and stressed that despite huge funds generated by the Commission, their welfare are being neglected.

One of the executive members of AUPTRE who spoke to Vigil360 on condition of anonymity accused the management, particularly the RG of siphoning money as he prepares to retire from Service.

He disclosed that the Commission generates about N5bn monthly and wondered why their welfare should be difficult to meet. He also lamented that despite unresolved welfare issues, the RG has approved increase in tax for worker in the Commission.
According to him, workers who hitherto paid about N30, 000 tax are now expected to be debited N70, 000.

He listed their demands to include payment of salary differentials of 9% from January 2014, immediate inauguration of a committee to bridge the gap in salaries between executive and non-executive staff, payment of promotion arrears and other welfare related packages.

Yesterday the workers who were going about their duties became restive after their representatives, who sought to meet with the management were shunned by the RG. They immediately declared strike and locked the facility. Lawyers who were present for registration and other engagements were driven out of the office.

This morning, it was observed that some of the workers had barricaded the office to prevent people from accessing the facility.

All efforts to reach the Registrar General of the Commission, Mahmud Bello were futile as he neither picked nor returned calls to his phone number. At the time of filing this report, he was yet to respond to text messages.

PoliticsRe: DSS Foils Coordinated Terror Attacks In Kano And Three Other States by PiQi(op): 7:59am On Jun 24, 2017
May we have a peaceful holiday.
PoliticsDSS Foils Coordinated Terror Attacks In Kano And Three Other States by PiQi(op): 3:15pm On Jun 23, 2017
The Department of State Services has uncovered and foiled coordinated terror attacks across cities in the country. The nation's Secret Service made the disclosure in a press release signed by Tony Opuiyo and made available to vigil360 today.
The statement reads:

In the past few weeks, this Service has uncovered a sinister plot by terrorist elements to stage series of coordinated attacks using explosives on different cities across the country. Their aim was to hit on soft targets such as markets, public parks, public processions, recreation centres, as well as worship centres especially the Eid Praying Grounds and other densely populated areas during the forthcoming Eid-el-Fitr Sallah celebration. The latest plan by the terrorists was to unleash mayhem on Kano, Sokoto, Kaduna and Maiduguri.

Consequently, the Service wishes to announce that the planned terrorist attacks in Kano and aforementioned States have been nipped in the bud. This followed the arrest of Yusuf ADAMU and Abdumuminu HALADU in the early hours of today, 23/06/2017, in Sokoto. ADAMU and his accomplice were to command the operation in Kano. However, the Service had earlier arrested the facilitator of the Kano attack, an explosive expert by name Bashir MOHAMMED at Unguwar Barnawa, Shekar Madaki, Kumbatso LGA, Kano State on 20th June, 2017. Their plan, together with others now at large, was to assemble the explosives and use them on select targets during the Eid-el-Fitr Celebrations.

On the arrest of MOHAMMED in Kumbatso, Kano, a search was conducted at his residence wherein the following dangerous weapons were recovered:
Eight (cool AK-47 rifles;
Twenty (20) fully loaded AK-A7 magazines;

Twenty seven (27) hand grenades;

Seven hundred and ninety three (793) rounds of live
ammunition;

One (1) gas cylinder;

Three (3) laptops;

One (1) GSM phone;

One (1) Lifan motorcycle;

One (1) Honda Civic Car (Ash); and
One (1) printer.

The Service has also uncovered plans by the terrorist elements to infiltrate the ranks of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria (a.k.a. Shiites). This is in an attempt to assume a formidable cover to unleash violence and evoke a complete state of chaos in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja during the group’s Qudus Day Procession/Rally scheduled for today (23/06/2017) in Abuja and several States in the Northern parts of the country. Sequel to this, the Service is warning members of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN) to desist from staging any form of procession or demonstration as the terrorists will seize the opportunity to unleash mayhem.

The public is encouraged to disregard the antics of these terrorist extremists to cause a breakdown of law and order and instil fear in the populace. The Service is working, in concert with other security agencies, to ensure that no section of the country is attacked during and after the Sallah celebrations. Law abiding citizens and residents are not only assured of their safety but enjoined to go about their normal businesses without fear of attack. It pledges to engage all stakeholders to ensure a hitch free Eid-el-fitr festival across the country.

The DSS enjoined the public to remain very vigilant before, during and after the Sallah celebrations.

The Statement added that, persons with useful information regarding suspicious movements and faces as well as unusual activities of criminals and terrorists around their neighbourhoods, are advised to immediately avail same to the Service or the nearest security agency.

PoliticsThe Merchant Called Nnamdi Kanu And His 2019 Senatorial Ambition - Frank Eze by PiQi(op):
Nigeria is indeed a very interesting country. The many imbalances in our economic, political, and religious structures have always evolved “messiahs” of some sort. Unfortunately the youths have been at the mercies of these merchants and their deceptive antics. From the Niger Delta Militancy to Boko Haram Insurgency, men and women who claimed to be fighting for justice have been found to be nothing but merchants taking advantage of our collective heritage.

Nnamdi Kanu is the new boy on the block. He has proved to be a master of the game. With well oiled deception and propaganda machinery he has become the latest “hero” in town. He promised us eldorado in his so called Biafra Republic. He called Nigeria a zoo, and its inhabitant’s baboons. He talked about political marginalization, convincing us on why we must all jettison Nigeria for Biafra.

For once in my adult life, I was tempted to see reasons with Kanu. Why? Because Ralph Uwazuirike was a scam, a self-serving agitator whose god is his belly. I therefore resigned to fate that all Biafran agitators are nothing but merchants desperate to sell their wares to the leadership of the Nigerian state; they want a chunk of the national cake. I couldn’t have been convinced by MASSOB and its affiliates who dominated the South-East for about ten (10) years, until the “ninja man” Kanu appeared on the scene.

He started as being part of a larger MASSOB agitation, broadcasting propaganda materials from the United Kingdom through the infamous Biafra Radio. But gradually but stealthingly, MASSOB was dethroned, Unwazuirike had had his fair share of the national cake; as Kanu sold himself as the new man to lead the charge.

Indeed, Kanu was smart. He added something unique to Unwazuirike’s gruff approach – Judaism, the opium of the Igbo people. Presenting himself as a Judaist, Kanu knew he will consolidate on the fairytale that the Igbos shares the same ancestry with Israel.

So this is how I fell for the Kanu’s sham. So while he was in custody, I joined in the agitation calling for his release. From Aba to Enugu, I fought hard and availed my contributions in the campaign for his release. I was at the Federal High Court, Abuja, many times. Staged series of protests between the Unity Fountain and Federal Secretariat countless times; and led various social media campaigns on why Kanu must be free.

Fortunately, freedom came at last!!! Kanu was granted bail. But that is where my problem began.

Suddenly, Kanu moved from being a freedom fighter to a political power house. Politicians, business moguls, and religious leaders lined up and paid their way to have audience with him. The social media is littered with pictures of those who had the “rare privilege” of securing audience with the IPOB leader. Even Governor Willie Obiano of Anambra State paid his way by offering Nnamdi Kanu $50,000 and two Sport Utility Vehicles (SUVs) as political patronage, which Kanu gladly accepted as gifts.

On his part, Rochas Okorocha, is wooing Kanu to declare his membership of APC. The Imo State Governor has also promised him the party’s senatorial ticket come 2019, and a cash-backing of N50 Million. All these are going on while credulous poor men, women and children who don’t have much to give Kanu but their unalloyed support kneel before the IPOB leader to receive some forms of spiritual blessings. INDEED KANU IS A SMART CROOK.

While these gullible men and women keep the agitation alive in their hearts, Kanu has already positioned himself as the godfather of Igbo politics ahead of 2019. He has suddenly become powerful than all the South-East Governors put together. From Enugu to Owerri, Kanu will surely have a say on who eventually emerges as Governor, Senator, and Member of the House of Representatives; himself already sure of a Senatorial seat at the National Assembly. Wao! Nigeria My Country!

Just few years ago, the name Nnamdi Kanu did not ring a bell in the entire Igbo land. He was just another hustler in the United Kingdom trying to make ends meet. But today, Kanu is at the very top, dinning and winning with the great and mighty, while his naive foot soldiers hope in vain for that day when Biafra shall be free.

My dear brothers and sisters, the agitations for Biafra is a hoax. Nnamdi Kenny Okwu Kanu is another Tompolo, Asari Dokubo, Ateke Tom, Abubakar Shekau, Ganiyu Adams, Femi Fani Kayode and many other political merchants and “smart” Nigerians who have mastered the art of holding government by the jugular. We hail them as heroes, we see them as liberators. But today they are all billionaires as they fizzle out of the scene to enjoy their wealth or get elected into political positions or secure political appointments. They suddenly become part of the establishment, while the causes they claimed to be fighting inherently remain with us.

I have come to this conclusion that if only the enterprising young men and women of Igboland will join hands, hearts and minds to advance their causes in a more strategic way, engaging the political system in the same way they have risen to conquer its economy, I believe we shall fare better in Nigeria, while refusing the antics, dishonesty, disingenuousness and greed of our secessionist agitators whose “okpoloor eye is open eye”.
