Suspected Islamic gunmen attacked an upscale cafe in theBangladeshi capital popular with foreigners before police stormed the building on Saturday and rescued at least 13 hostages, officials said.
Six gunmen were killed during the police operation and one was captured alive,Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said in a TV broadcast. She said 13 hostages were rescued, but that police were unable to save all of them.
“The operation is over and the situation is under control,” army spokesman Colonel Rashidul Hasan told Reuters.
The attack marks a major escalation in a campaign by Islamic militants over the past 18 months that had targeted mostly individuals advocating a secular or liberal approach in mostly Muslim Bangladesh.

Susana Dujim, Miss World 1955 from Venezuela has passed away at the age of 79. The beauty queen hailing from Venezuela suffered from a cerebrovascular accident last Thursday. Since then she was induced into a medical coma and never recovered from it.
Susana was a radio personality back in her hometown and she was also the first Latina to win the prestigious Miss World title.
The beauty queen also participated at the Miss Universe 1955 pageant and was placed amongst the semi-finalists. Susana's daughter followed her footsteps and clinched the title of Miss Venezuela World in 1983.

The Anambra State Government Friday flagged off the disbursement of N1billion to small business enterprises through the Anambra State Small Business Agency (ASBA).
The agency, according to its Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Clement Chukwuka, is encouraged to go ahead with the loans because the N1billion Small and Medium Enterprises loans granted last year “have almost zero default rate as no obligor has defaulted in their monthly repayment obligation”.
He said at the flag-off of Anambra farming season at Umunze in Orumba South Local Council that what was being disbursed was N500million being the first tranche of the N1billion single digit interest loan facility, recently received from the Central Bank of Nigeria.
According to him, beneficiaries have been carefully screened to reflect government major pillars of economic development in agriculture, industries, trade and commerce and logistics while ensuring that no local government is left behind in producing beneficiaries.

Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom, has told people of the state to forget local government election for now.
The Benue State Independent Electoral Commission (BSIEC), had earlier presented a bill of N1.5 billion for the conduct of the September 3 election to the governor.
Ortom later reduced it to N800 million.But speaking in Makurdi yesterday, Ortom said “We don’t have money to conduct local government election.”
The governor explained that the 23 local government councils in the state were supposed to provide 60 percent of the money required, while the state would provide 40 percent.
While Ortom’s reason was based on the economic situation in the state, many citizens argue that he was scared of protest votes against the All Progressives Congress (APC) government over non-payment of salaries for months.
