Science/Technology / Wearable Ring, Wristband Allow Users To Control Smart Tech With Hand Gestures by poemsofthesage(m): 6:30am On May 15, 2018
New technology could make controlling text or other mobile applications as simple as '1-2-3.' Using acoustic chirps emitted from a ring and received by a wristband, like a smartwatch, the system is able to recognize 22 different micro finger gestures that could be programmed to various commands -- including a T9 keyboard interface, a set of numbers, or application commands like playing or stopping music.

The FingerPing system can recognize hand poses using the 12 bones of the fingers and digits ‘1’ through ‘10’ in American Sign Language (ASL).

New technology created by a team of Georgia Tech researchers could make controlling text or other mobile applications as simple as "1-2-3."

Using acoustic chirps emitted from a ring and received by a wristband, like a smartwatch, the system is able to recognize 22 different micro finger gestures that could be programmed to various commands -- including a T9 keyboard interface, a set of numbers, or application commands like playing or stopping music.

A video demonstration of the technology shows how, at a high rate of accuracy, the system can recognize hand poses using the 12 bones of the fingers and digits '1' through '10' in American Sign Language (ASL).

"Some interaction is not socially appropriate," said Cheng Zhang, the Ph.D. student in the School of Interactive Computing who led the effort. "A wearable is always on you, so you should have the ability to interact through that wearable at any time in an appropriate and discreet fashion. When we're talking, I can still make some quick reply that doesn't interrupt our interaction."

The system is also a preliminary step to being able to recognize ASL as a translator in the future, Zhang said. Other techniques utilize cameras to recognize sign language, but that can be obtrusive and is unlikely to be carried everywhere.

"If my wearable can translate it for me, that's the long-term goal," Zhang said.

The system is called FingerPing. Unlike other technology that requires the use of a glove or a more obtrusive wearable, this technique is limited to just a thumb ring and a watch. The ring produces acoustic chirps that travel through the hand and are picked up by receivers on the watch. There are specific patterns in which sound waves travel through structures, including the hand, that can be altered by the manner in which the hand is posed. Utilizing those poses, the wearer can achieve up to 22 pre-programmed commands.

The gestures are small and non-invasive, as simple as tapping the tip of a finger or posing your hand in classic "1," "2," and "3" gestures.

"The receiver recognizes these tiny differences," Zhang said. "The injected sound from the thumb will travel at different paths inside the body with different hand postures. For instance, when your hand is open there is only one direct path from the thumb to the wrist. Any time you do a gesture where you close a loop, the sound will take a different path and that will form a unique signature."

Zhang said that the research is a proof of concept for a technique that could be expanded and improved upon in the future.

The research was presented last month at the 2018 ACM Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems (CHI). The paper is titled FingerPing: Recognizing Fine-grained Hand Poses Using Active Acoustic On-body Sensing (Cheng Zhang, Qiuyue Xue, Anandghan Waghmare, Ruichen Meng, Sumeet Jain, Yizeng Han, Xinyu Li, Kenneth Cunefare, Thomas Ploetz, Thad Starner, Omer Inan, Gregory Abowd).

Researchers on this team, including Zhang, have worked on similar unique gesture techniques in the past. Zhang graduated from Georgia Tech in May and will join the Information Science Department at Cornell University as a tenure-track assistant professor.

Travel / Man Moves Court In Search Of Wife, Woman Denies She Is Married by poemsofthesage(m): 2:12pm On May 14, 2018
A man approached the Delhi High Court in search of a woman whom he claimed to be his wife but she refused to go with him telling the court that she never married him.
The woman also denied the man's claim that she was detained illegally by her brother and maintained that she was living with him willingly.

She told the court that the 'nikahnama' (marriage certificate) claimed by the man was not genuine as she was forced to sign blank papers after being taken forcibly in a car.

With these facts coming up in the court proceedings, a Bench of justices S Muralidhar and I S Mehta refused to be drawn into any further claims and counter-claims and held that it was satisfied that the woman was living with her brother of her own free will and was under "no restraint or illegal detention".

The court disposed of a habeas corpus petition filed by the man seeking direction to the woman's brother to produce the woman, whom he claimed to have married on July 26, 2017, and said it was "not inclined to issue any directions in this petition".

"This court would not like to enter into this controversy at this stage because as far as the habeas corpus petition is concerned, the court has to satisfy itself that the person whose production is sought by the petitioner is not under any restraint and is not being detained by anyone against that person's wishes.

"In this case, the court is satisfied that as of date, the woman is living of her own free will with her brother and is under no restraint or illegal detention. The court, accordingly, is not inclined to issue any directions in this petition," the Bench said.

The judges spoke to the woman and her brother in their chamber where she said that "no valid" marriage was performed between her and the man and she does not wish to go with him.

The woman also maintained that she was staying with her brother and his family willingly and her date of birth in her Aadhaar card, produced by the man, was erroneous.
The judges, thereafter, called the man and his counsel in their chamber and conveyed to them the stand of the woman.

The man also denied that he had taken away the woman forcibly and made her sign papers for the purpose of marriage.

When the man's counsel expressed apprehension over his safety, the judges said it will be for the SHO of Malviya Nagar police station to make an assessment for his protection and issue directions.

The man claimed before the court that he married the woman and they both decided not to disclose this to their families.

He said that in April, when the woman disclosed about her marriage to her brother, he objected to it and threatened the man with dire consequences. On April 22, the man also told his parents about his marriage and they agreed to it.

While the man claimed that according to the Aadhaar card submitted at the time of marriage, the woman was born on January 1, 1998, she said she turned 18 on March 24 this year as she was born in 2000.

The police had said that the man was known to the woman's family and had also stayed at her brother's house earlier for some years.

They said that the woman had claimed that her signatures were forcibly taken by the man after she denied his marriage proposal.

Foreign Affairs / California Becomes First u.s State To Mandate Solar Panels In Homes by poemsofthesage(m): 11:43am On May 10, 2018
California becomes first US state to mandate solar on homes

Officials say solar energy will more than pay for itself, and homeowners could see significantly lower utilities costs per month.

California has become the first US state to mandate solar panels on new homes and apartment buildings built after 1 January, 2020.

The California Energy Commission unanimously approved the plan, making it the state's next big step towards ending greenhouse gas emissions.

State law already requires that 50% of all electricity comes from non carbon-emitting sources by 2030.

The mandate still requires approval from the Building Standards Commission.

Critics have been quick to note that the solar panel mandate will add between $8,000 (£5,900) and $12,000 to a home's cost.

The Energy Commission estimates, however, that homeowners will only see an additional $40 to monthly mortgage payments.

At the same time, the commission said they will save $80 on heating, cooling and lighting costs per month.

Is the US solar industry about to tear itself apart?
One state's fight for solar power - and against misinformation
The new mandate does offer exceptions where solar power is not feasible or cost effective, such as homes located entirely under shade.

Builders will have the option of adding solar panels to individual homes, or building shared power systems for a group of homes.

Current homeowners would not be required to add solar to existing homes, though many in the state have done so using government rebate programmes.

California has invested over $42m in solar energy to date, and the mandate will likely give a further boost to the solar industry statewide.

California has invested over $42m in solar energy to date.

The Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA) already ranks California as the top state in the US when it comes to solar energy.

Nearly 16% of the state's electricity last year came from solar.

Abby Hopper, SEIA president, said on Twitter that California's mandate demonstrates "that promoting home solar makes sense".

The California Building Industry Association has been working with the Energy Commission on the new standards for the past decade, according to ABC News.

The Building Standards Commission is expected to make a decision later this year.

Lynn Jurich, co-founder of solar installation company Sunrun, told the New York Times that large market expansions like this make it "very cost effective to do".

"There's also this real American sense of freedom of producing electricity on my rooftop," Ms Jurich told the Times.

"And it's another example of California leading the way."

California is already ahead of schedule with its long-term energy goals: the California Public Utilities Commission reported that they will likely meet the 2030 goal 10 years ahead of schedule

Sports / Man Set To Take His Life This Thursday Legally by poemsofthesage(m): 10:49pm On May 09, 2018
MAN SET TO TAKE HIS LIFE THIS THURSDAY:

At 104, David Goodall believes he's ready to die.

The Australian scientist is so prepared, in fact, that's he's left for Switzerland, where he will be allowed to legally end his own life through assisted suicide.

Goodall spoke to reporters from France Monday as he neared his final destination, according to APTN.

"I am glad to arrive," he said from a wheelchair. "The message I would like to send is: Once one passes the age of 50 or 60, one should be free to decide for oneself, whether one wants to go on living or not."

Goodall wants his decision to send a message to legislators who he hopes will one day legalize assisted suicide in places like Australia.

Goodall reiterated his frustration about not being as free or as mobile in his later years as he once was.

He was expected to meet with a doctor Tuesday and will hold a news conference Wednesday.

Goodall acknowledged he was "a bit sorry to say goodbye to my family in Bordeaux, but that's the way it was."

Switzerland is one of only two countries, along with Colombia, that allows foreigners to enter the country for assisted suicide.

Travel / Ex Chinese Official Jailed For Life For Bribery, Are You Thinking Nigeria? by poemsofthesage(m): 10:36pm On May 08, 2018
CAN'T THIS BE ADOPTED IN NIGERIA?

Sun Zhengcai: Former top Chinese official jailed for life

Sun will have all his "illegal gains" confiscated

A former Chinese Communist Party official once tipped for a top leadership position has been sentenced to life in prison for bribery.

Sun Zhengcai, a former Politburo member, is the latest senior figure to fall in President Xi Jinping's anti-corruption campaign.

He was found guilty of taking bribes of more than $26.7m (£19.6m).

The 54-year-old, also the former party chief of Chongqing, pleaded guilty to the charges in April.

According to state media outlet Xinhua, Sun's "illegal gains" would be confiscated.

President Xi has made it his personal mission to tackle the widespread corruption in China. More than a million officials have been punished since he became president.

But critics accuse him of using the anti-corruption campaign to silence his political opponents and rein in officials who challenge his position.

Education / Warning To Half Naked Female Students In Zambia by poemsofthesage(m): 2:43pm On May 08, 2018
Zambia library warns 'half-naked' female students

Student Dikina Muzeya said male students should concentrate on reading

One of Zambia's top universities has urged female students to stop visiting the library "half-naked" because it distracts male counterparts.

The University of Zambia - in the capital, Lusaka - has stuck up notices around its library telling them to dress more modestly.
The southern African country is culturally conservative.

But students at the university tend to dress more fashionably, says the BBC's Kennedy Gondwe in Zambia.

"It has come to our attention that some female students dress half-naked as they use the library, a situation which is disturbing the male students," the notice in the library reads.

"We therefore advise the female students to dress modestly as you use university facilities. Modest is the way to go!"

'Look at books, not legs'

Some female students disagreed with the directive.

"If your mission of going to the library is to study, why should you start looking at other things like a female's legs?" third-year student Dikina Muzeya told the BBC.

"Just concentrate on your books, that's all," she said.
However, male student Killion Phiri was in favour of the move.

"You know how attractive women bodies are," he told the BBC.

"How can you concentrate on studying when someone walks in a mini-skirt or a tight dress? You'll start thinking about other things and you won't concentrate."
