Politics / Governor Dickson Criticises Non-inclusion Of Indigenes At Federal Level by politicalcritik: 4:46pm On Aug 01, 2016
The Governor of Bayelsa State, Mr. Seriake Dickson, has criticised the non-inclusion of Bayelsa indgenes at the federal level in line with the Federal Character principle.

According to Dickson, Bayelsa State deserved adequate representation considering the fact that it contributes immensely to the national economy.

The Governor made the observation during the State Monthly Praise Night at the Palace of Melchizedek, in Toru Orua, his hometown in Sagbama Local Government Area, a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Daniel Iworiso-Markson, said on Monday.

Dickson noted that the time had come for all Bayelsans to key into his administration's agenda to move the state forward.

He also extended a hand of fellowship to members of the main opposition party to close ranks with his administration in actualising the vision of his government.

The governor said his political opponents still remained his brothers and sisters, stressing that the state required the collective efforts of all stakeholders irrespective of party affliations to enable it to make progress.

While restating that the task of developing the state is a collective one, he said that Bayelsa has had enough distractions and divisions, particularly when the country is grappling with daunting economic challenges

Politics / Fayose Regret Supporting Sheriff To Become PDP Chairman by politicalcritik: 7:40am On Aug 01, 2016
The Ekiti State Governor, Mr. Ayodele Fayose, said he had learnt his lessons from his initial support for the embattled factional National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff.

He said, "I must tell you that I have learnt my lessons from my past experience. I will not openly identify or campaign for a candidate any longer. As part of our great party in Ekiti, I 'm assuring you that I do not have a personal candidate and God knows I have not spoken to my people about any candidate."We will allow God to choose for us this time by ensuring that all aspirants have a level-playing ground.

"I have learnt my lessons on Ali Modu Sheriff and I take full responsibility for the consequences. Imagine, if we have allowed him to get there, with the way he is now behaving, it would have been worse than this." Fayose, while expressing concerns about the crisis rocking the party, lamented that some people were merely paying lip service to reconciliation efforts in the PDP because of selfish interest.

He stated, "Some people have alleged that I have surrendered for our elder in the party, Chief Bode George. Let me make it categorically clear that I was born and bred in Ibadan and I do understand and appreciate the Yoruba traditions so much and so I have respect for elders."But there was no time that Chief Bode George and I met and discuss this issue and I did not in any way surrender the race to him.

I have not stepped down for him in any way because this time we need fresh and younger blood that would have the physical and mental alertness for the job.

"I have been touring 17 states of the federation for just about a week now and I'm still strong." Meanwhile, the Chairman, Board of Trustees of the PDP, Senator Walid Jibrin, has faulted insinuations that Sheriff was planted by some unseen forces to destroy the party.

He said at Sherrif's age, nobody could have planted him to destroy a party, which was built by great Nigerians, both living and dead. Jibrin noted that God would not forgive anyone who wanted to destroy a party that governed Nigeria for 16 years

Religion / Unclothedness At The Expense Of Beauty by politicalcritik: 7:54am On Jul 31, 2016
By Okon Primus Xavier
There is a fundamental difference between being naked and being nudeness . While unclothedness is simply the state of having no clothes on, nudeness is the exploration and even often the exploitation of unclothedness for ulterior purposes.

The difference becomes clearer when considered in the light of progression of human civilization from the time humans were naked because there were no sufficient and adequate clothing material, to the time where unclothedness became a deliberate and calculated choice having little or nothing to do with the availability of clothes.

From the early times in Black Africa (where good moral values were highly priced and observed in spite of African men and women prowling the day in outer unclothedness, at most covering the genitals with leaves and animal fur) to the present scenario, where the body curves and genitals have come to be identified with human’s rawest, fiercest and most desperate expression of human sexual energy.

African dance was viewed as nothing but a celebration of sexual energy in the opinion of earliest European visitors (citation), to a present day setting where dancing is seen as means of inciting the opposite gender into sexual arousal and consequently sexual attraction.

Presently, the trend which is most deplorable is the economic exploitation of human unclothedness, which consists in the use of human unclothedness and nudity for economic benefits and business strategies to attract customer patronage and investors by entrepreneurs, corporate organizations, entertainment and advertisement industries – SEX SELLS! And rightly so.

What is saddening is the increasing number of young ladies today who clamour to feature in adverts, what is often now called ‘modelling’, with skimpy dresses that is most often geared at sexual arousal of the opposite sex all for economic gains. Many others make use of Billboards, newspapers, magazines, and even T.V stations to showcase their products and services to the public with the pictures or videos of ‘nude’ individuals on them all in a bid to attract customers, promote the products and services they offer. The beauty of many adverts seems lost because nudity, rather than the initial intention of marketing a product in the final analysis is promoted.

Furthermore, this trend has infiltrated the very soul of the entertainment industries. It is not uncommon to see some men dressed decently in most of the music videos while the ladies feature on “bikinis” or total unclothedness for dancing in such videos with pride, talk more of the men who flaunt their bare bodies with their six pack bellies in such videos. Some of the Nollywood movies no longer carry the much desired moral lessons and meaning they had intended to communicate to the viewer. In place of such noble intentions, the level of nudity displayed and promoted is gradually taking the centre stage even on movies that portray the ancient African Traditional settings. It is pertinent to mention here that most of the viewers of movies and music videos are the youth and children and this has adverse and devastating consequences on them as well as the entire populace.

This is evident in the many forms of indecent dressing and styles that are considered to be in vogue. Cases of rape, prostitution, transmission of STDs, alcoholism, drug addiction, and unwanted pregnancy are among the few ills that could result from indecent dressing and nude appearances.

Unfortunately, many young men and women and as a matter of fact even some of the elderly import this orientation of nudity for beauty into the church. Mini-skirts, low waste, singlet, tight leggings, three quarter shorts, sleeveless shirts, bomb shorts and all other sorts of things are worn to the church in the name of fashion and beauty when in essence nudity and unclothedness is demonstrated. With such dress styles sensitive parts of the body are exposed to ‘God’ and other worshippers as well. Even when so much sensitization has been carried out against indecent dressing in churches, many are still bent on nudity to the detriment of beauty.

Sacred Scripture admonishes that for whoever causes another who believes in Christ to sin, it would be better for him if a great millstone were hung round his neck and he were thrown into the sea (Mark 9:42).

Some might argue that ‘beauty is in the eyes of the beholder’, (an aphorism credited to Plato in his famous allegory of the cave) and rely on the saying of Protagoras that ‘man is the measure of all things…’ as a basis to relativize beauty and justify nudity.

This however, does not represent the Platonic mind whose aim was to link material beauty to immaterial and perfect beauty as the source of all that is creaturely beautiful. For created beauty are all pointers to the ideal beauty, and by that it serves as means to an end rather than an end in itself which is what relativism professes and which is why nudity sells.

So, nudity is in no way synonymous to beauty; and anyone who appraises nudity rather makes mockery of the human person who is beautiful and also God who is Beauty itself. In point of fact, the human person is intrinsically beautiful and does not need the garment of nudity to showcase its beauty; for nudity makes the human person more of a commodity.

What an aberration! This is why the dignity of the human person must be seen supreme beyond any marketing services, economic advancements and self-flaunting, and thus, not a packaging strategy for industries, government or individual entrepreneurs. So let decency, modesty and decorum be the preservative garments for the beauty of the human person in all spheres of human endeavour. Only then can this trend be curtailed less the bible and other sacred vessels start having naked girls on them for advert. GOD FORBID!

They argued that Ekweremadu would use his position to further entrench the Peoples Democratic Party, if they allowed him to remain A leading party member from the zone, who asked not to be named for fear of retribution said, "We are not ignorant, we know that the new Senator from our zone, being a green horn and the only one, cannot unseat Ekweremadu."We will be willing to trade him in for a grade ministry and a choice committee.

A chieftain of the party and member of the South-East caucus, Mr. Osita Okechukwu, said, "To be honest we candidly advise Ekweremadu to step down for our brother, Sen. Ben Uwajumogu."His first excuse for usurping the APC's slot was to represent Ndigbo.

"The party will come up with several options and at that point in time, the replacement will surely come from the party. Nobody will move against the party. The party will liaise with us and we will all agree." Another member of the APC caucus, who spoke to Sunday PUNCH on condition of anonymity, said the ruling party was banking on the Senate Standing Rules forgery case to remove Ekweremadu.

He said it was then that the APC senators who voted for Saraki and Ekweremadu, which was against the choice of the party, would fall back to the side of the party.

He said, "The real Standing Rule says that if there is a division, everybody will stand up and declare where they stand. How can you then stand before the camera and vote against your party?"No APC senator will stand up and vote against the party openly on live TV. At that state, every lawmaker must stand up and declare where they stand and who they are voting for.

"We advise them against this I'll advised venture because the Senate is a bipartisan Senate and they are free by law to elect their leaders." Speaking in a similar vein, Mazi Bismarck Oji, Exec Director, Centre for the Advancement of Literacy and Leadership said people like the Imo State governor who are championing the cause to remove the DSP are wasting their time.

The brainy Prof and former VC from Imo was even made a junior Minister to someone that does not hold a PhD. The Arewa Youth Consultative Forum and a chieftain of the Arewa Consultative Forum, Mohammed Abdulrahman, on Saturday stated that northerners were not afraid of Nigeria being restructured.

According to Abdulrahman, it is the best way to go for the country since some northern elites, who opposed the restructuring of the country , are only interested in keeping the structure of the nation the way it is because of their selfish gains.

If the country is properly restructured, it is hoped it will benefit the masses and not some politicians who are only interested in buying cars and building houses for their families.

It is not true that northerners are afraid of the country being restructured.

Sani said, "The North is currently opposed to the restructuring of Nigeria precisely because there is nothing to restructure.

Politics / I Rejected £1m Bribe From A Governor -femi Falana by politicalcritik: 1:58am On Jul 30, 2016
Mr. Femi Falana (SAN), says he once rejected a bribe of £1m from a governor he did not name. The EFCC Alert, a monthly magazine, quoted Falana as saying this at an anti-corruption workshop in Abuja recently.

Falana said the governor told him to help him launder the money to another country but he rejected the offer.

Falana said he was stunned when the governor told him that he had chosen him for the shady deal saying “nobody will suspect you.”

“I told him, Your Excellency, so it is my reputation that you want to buy with your £1m.”

The senior advocate said some of his colleagues accepted to launder the funds for the governor but were caught and exposed.

“Those who accepted the offer later found themselves in trouble as they were arrested and humiliated. They were only lucky not to have been charged,” Falana added.

Falana said it was unfortunate that lawyers had become tools of money laundering.

He expressed displeasure with the ruling of Justice Gabriel Kolawole of a Federal High Court in Abuja who held that Section 5 of the Money Laundering (Prohibitions) Act 2011 could not be applied to lawyers.

The judge in the ruling restrained the Federal Government, the Central Bank of Nigeria and the Special Control Unit against Money Laundering from enforcing the section as it relates to legal practitioners.

The ruling came despite the fact that the Act categorised legal firms as Designated Non-Financial Institutions mandated to record all transactions and forward to the Federal Ministry of Commerce for onward delivery to the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit.

Falana, however, urged lawyers not to rely on the ruling as it would not stand the test of time.

Crime / Lagos Residents Put Up Houses, Lands For Sale For Fear Of Military Invasion by politicalcritik: 1:13am On Jul 30, 2016
Militants' attacks: Lagos residents put up houses, lands for sale Some residents of riverside communities in Lagos State are selling off their lands and houses in fear following attacks by suspected Niger Delta militants in the areas, Saturday PUNCH has learnt.

But during a visit to the communities, our correspondents learnt that the residents had gone beyond fleeing the troubled communities to selling their houses, lands and other properties in panic.

A real estate agent, Ojo Alaso, told one of our correspondents that he had been approached by at least three people, whom he had helped to buy lands in the areas.

When our correspondents visited the office of the Olomu family, a man who was later identified as the Olori Ebi (family head), explained that he had been receiving reports about people putting their houses up for sale.

A community leader and rights activist in the area, who spoke on condition of anonymity to avoid being killed by militants, told Saturday PUNCH that a man simply identified as Aroso Alajo (a popular thrift collector) wanted to sell his three-bedroomed house.

Findings by Saturday PUNCH showed that a good number of landlords had already put their houses up for sale fearing that the militants might strike again anytime.

Though there are no "To Let" boards on the properties, our correspondents learnt from reliable sources within the estate that many properties were already put up for sale and the owners were ready to sell them at any reasonable price.

"People don't have to move out of the areas, the Lagos State Police Command is on top of the situation," spokesperson for the police in Lagos, Dolapo Badmos told Saturday PUNCH.

The Anambra State Governor, Willie Obiano, has installed Dr. Emeka Onuorah as the monarch of the Oraukwu community in Idemili North Local Government Area, despite the protest from the people of the area.

The community had on Wednesday halted activities at the Government House, Awka, in a protest following a suspicion of an alleged imposition of Onuorah on them by the government.

The leader of the community, Chief Harold Mbanusi, had said during the protest that they were at the Government House to stop the government from foisting Onuorah on them.

Mbanusi said the community had held an election for the purpose of electing a monarch for the community, where Onuorah came a distant third.

He said in the election, Chief Pius Okoye scored 535 votes; Vincent Okechukwu scored 20 votes while Onuorah scored 15 votes.

Reacting, the Acting President-General of the community, Chief Harold Mbanusi, said the community would not recognise Onuorah as their monarch.

He said with the election, Okoye should be crowned the traditional ruler of the community and be presented to the local government area which affirmed him.

Politics / El-rufai Sacks Three Directors Over Breach Of Trust by politicalcritik: 2:04am On Jul 29, 2016
The Kaduna State Government has dismissed three directors of the Kaduna State Urban Planning and Development Agency and two others from the Kaduna State Geographic Information Service for abusing the revised Millennium City layout.

Letters of dismissal, signed by Mrs. Grace Yusuf Bature on behalf of the General Manager, KASUPDA, Saratu M. Haruna, and obtained by our correspondent, were said to have been delivered to Charles Akau Ibrahim, Director of Urban Planning and Research; Adamu Aliyu Nuhu, Director, Development Control; and Philemon Mairabo.

According to the letter, the sacking of the top directors followed the State Executive Council's deliberations over a report of the committee that investigated the role of some employees of the former Ministry of Land, Surveys and Country Planning, KASUPDA, and some traditional rulers in distorting the revised Millennium City layout.

It read, "Sequel to your suspension from the service via letter No.PER/SEC.351/Vol.1/006, dated May 31,2016; I am directed to convey to you the State Executive Council's decision at its 17th meeting held on May 9, 2016, and to dismiss you from the service of the state government with immediate effect."This is as per the report of the committee that investigated the role of some staff of the Ministry of Land and Surveys and Country Planning, KASUPDA, and traditional rulers in the revised Millennium City layout abuse TPO.833 which indicted you.

Three employees of the Local Government Service Commission in the state were also dismissed for defrauding pilgrims who paid for participation in the Hajj.

Politics / I Transported N4.7bn Poll Funds For Obanikoro, Ex-aide Confesses by politicalcritik: 1:27am On Jul 29, 2016
An officer of the Nigerian Navy, Lt.-Cdr Olumide Adewale, has told the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission that he helped his former boss, Senator Musiliu Obanikoro, to transport money, which was flown to Akure and later handed over to Abiodun Agbele on the instructions of Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State.

Adewale, who was the Aide-de-Camp to Obanikoro when the latter was the Minister of State for Defence, said this on Wednesday when he was grilled by detectives of the EFCC.

According to the anti-graft agency, the money was part of the N4.7bn that was paid into Obanikoro’s sons’ company account, Sylvan McNamara, on the instructions of the embattled former National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki (retd.).

Adewale, who was in charge of Obanikoro’s security for about a year, told the EFCC that everything he did was under the strict instructions of his boss.

He told investigators that on June 16, 2014, barely a week to the Ekiti State governorship election, he, alongside Obanikoro, departed the ex-minister’s Park View home in Ikoyi, Lagos, and headed for the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Ikeja, Lagos.

The naval officer told detectives that on getting to the airport, he met Obanikoro’s son, Gbolahan. He said Gbolahan and the former minister had a brief meeting after which a bullion van arrived at the private wing of the airport.

Adewale told the EFCC operatives that Gbolahan then directed some men at the airport to offload the money from the bullion van and load it unto the aircraft.

The entire activity was said to have been captured on CCTV.

A detective of the anti-graft agency quoted Adewale as saying, “The flight was delayed for about an hour. Later, a bullion van pulled into the hangar where the chartered flight was. Shortly after, Gbolahan ensured that some bags were offloaded unto the plane. I later boarded the flight with Obanikoro and his friend, Dr. Tunde Oshinowo (a PDP chieftain and a mutual friend of Obanikoro and Fayose).”

The EFCC detectives told one of our correspondents that on getting to the Akure airport, Obanikoro was welcomed by Mr. Abiodun Agbele, Fayose’s ally, who had since been arrested by the commission.

Adewale confirmed that Obanikoro was welcomed at the airport by a politician.

He told investigators that he did not know the name of the person but could recognise the person.

The naval man was further quoted as saying, “On arrival at Akure, the minister had a discussion with political friends. A bullion van was driven to the tarmac. The bags were offloaded unto the bullion van and the minister directed that we escort the van to a Zenith Bank branch in Akure.

“On arrival, the bags were offloaded by bank workers under the supervision of a civilian who had come to meet the minister at the Akure airport. I don’t know the man facially but I can recognise him.”

Meanwhile, Fayose has said the EFCC is on a wild goose chase in Ekiti State.

The governor stated that the anti-corruption commission had shifted attention to the finances of Ekiti State after what he claimed to be the failure of the commission to link him with the diversion of arms funds at the NSA’s office under Dasuki.

Fayose, who spoke on Orange FM station in Akure, Ondo State, on Thursday, said the EFCC had started harassing banks in Ekiti State, seeking for records of government finances, on allegations that the contractors gave him (governor) kickbacks.

“They are on vendetta mission. They said I collected money from Dasuki and I have told them that I did not collect a dime from Dasuki. I have N300m in my fixed deposit account in Zenith Bank and I declared it in my Asset Declaration Form.

“I have challenged them to publish the statement made to the EFCC by Dasuki where he said he gave Senator Musiliu Obanikoro money to give me or where Obanikoro himself said he gave me money.’’

Fayose called for proper restructuring of the country in line with the report of the 2014 National Conference.

“Nigeria has not been properly structured and that’s why we are facing all these problems. Remember it was those in power now that clamoured for restructuring when they were in opposition. Now that they have the federal powers and they are using the powers to oppress the people, they are against the restructuring of Nigeria,” he said.

Celebrities / Melania Trump’s Website Deleted Amids Questions Over College Degree by politicalcritik: 1:18am On Jul 29, 2016
Just over a week after she blazed into controversy for plagiarizing Michelle Obama, the website of Donald Trump's third wife Melania mysteriously vanished following questions about her university education.

The website disappeared after US media questioned whether the wife of the Republican nominee for president had a degree in architecture from the University of Ljubljana in Slovenia, as the online biography stated.

Trump told MSNBC in February only that she "Studied" design and architecture.

Melaniatrump.com are now automatically diverted to her husband's company website.

Thursday's tweet was a rare update from Melania Trump in the 13 months since her husband launched his controversial bid for the White House.

Last week, a staffer apologized for cribbing remarks from the current Democratic first lady for a speech Melania Trump delivered at the Republican National Convention in Cleveland, Ohio.

Melania Trump had "Always liked" Michelle Obama and read out passages from one of her speeches as examples of what she wanted to say, said the staffer.

Sports / Fifa’s Reputation Needs Restoration Said Samoura by politicalcritik: 12:56am On Jul 29, 2016
FIFA’s new general secretary, Fatma Samoura, said Friday her priority was restoring trust including among the organisation’s corporate sponsors, with FIFA in “a very turbulent moment” after more than a year of scandal.

Samoura took over as the number two at world football’s governing body last month, after her appointment by President Gianni Infantino.

“The reputational damage that all the financial scandals have caused to FIFA needs to be repaired,” Samoura was quoted as saying in an interview with FIFA’s in-house magazine.

Massive World Cup sponsors like Visa and Coca Cola were among the most powerful voices calling for sweeping reform as the graft that plagued ex-FIFA boss Sepp Blatter’s administration came to light.

Samoura spent 21 years at the United Nations Development Programme before being hired by Blatter’s replacement Infantino in May. Her two immediate predecessors in the general secretary’s job – Markus Kattner and Jerome Valcke – were both sacked over corruption.

Samoura has been tasked with day-to-day management of a massive reform drive implemented by FIFA in response to a web of unprecedented scandals that have brought down the most powerful names in world football.

“I’ll be personally having a much closer look at applications from women for senior positions in FIFA,” Samoura said.
