Although I'm not in the industry, but I think Real Estate will be better. Within a limited time, you can easily gather some money and establish your own firm with little capital. Also, there's political stability in the section. No rigid or constantly changing government policy. |

AlexJustin:Both r ok if they pay good enough, depends on where u will work from office or site and what ur interests are As a civil engineer if you like design, structural analysis and practicality then construction is good. However u might be in the office. Real estate - they can make u project manager |

AlexJustin:1. A real estate firm is only about building construction and little on roads (which they often contract to construction companies) while a construction company worth its salt can handle roads, bridges, Telecom towers, etc.....you get better experience in a construction company. 2. Real Estate firms have other departments they deem more important than the Engineering Department, namely the Business Development, accounts and Marketing Departments. The Management will readily keep these departments operating in full swing in a swanky, air-conditioned corporate office while Site Engineers will be under one mango tree, on the site. The office people will still have a hard-on for you because of the little allowances you get, and, lemme tell you, they are closer to the MD than you! They are there in meetings and can suggest all manner of things to make life hard for you in the name of improving the Company bottom line. Please take the construction company and train hard in design and Project Management, obtaining certifications in them if you can. It will help you run your own company. You must have guessed it by now that I'm speaking from experience. |

Hello, Thank you for this question. Since you have gone for the interview, I will suggest you select a firm that has your career growth and rewards at heart. I always tell my clients that it is their responsibility to meet all of their professional goals, not that of their bosses. So when selecting, check very well by asking questions during interview especially. Always ask yourself, where you will be with the company in the next 5 years; financially and professionally. Good luck. |

Start with construction, get the vast knowledge needed both locally and internationally. You can switch to real estate later if you so desire for diversity |

AlexJustin:do you want to start on your own or considering working in a company? As an experience Architect, working with construction companies for 13 years now, I would advise you to pick construction company over a real estate if you want to work with an organisation. But make sure the company is the one that can withstand the test of time. Not the one that will be owning workers salary |

AlexJustin:I have worked at the highest levels of both. If your target is to gather experience, then go for a good construction company but if you like to do things in a mundane repeated manner then real estate is for you. |

It depends on the role your going to perform there they both handle there but a construction firm you are gaining work experience on the regular |

AlexJustin:In my opinion, as a young Civil Engineer, I think it is better to start from a consulting firm to garner good design experience (companies like Arup, Desicon, Omonitan & Abe etc) then move to a construction company to gather money and construction experience as a Project Engineer or Project manager or Resident Engineer (companies like Cappa & D'Alberto, Julius Berger, El-Alan etc.) Real estate firms do not add much to you in terms of experience and money except the real estate firm also doubles as a construction firm otherwise, you will just be another Property manager or even a glorified facility manager in a real estate firm. |

I think I concur with almost everything and join them in suggesting that you start in construction as it is broader. That gives you the opportunity to go through projects before settling for an area of specialization (structural, transport/highway, etc). The building sector, in my opinion, may be a bit too focused for you for now. |

You stand to make more money in the real estate industry, but you learn more in the construction company and the experience would be invaluable. As a civil engineer, I find building very boring, because there are lots of more technical and interesting structures to construct than just building houses where you will be in competition with bricklayers, architects, surveyors, quantifiers etc who all claim to be engineers on building sites. |

AlexJustin:This depends on the staff strength of the organizations. They are both very challenging aspects of practice that mostly require your presence always except of course you have attained management position and have people assigned under you. |
