Although I'm not in the industry, but I think Real Estate will be better.

Within a limited time, you can easily gather some money and establish your own firm with little capital.

Also, there's political stability in the section. No rigid or constantly changing government policy.

Good day all,

Which is better for a Civil Engineer, construction company or a Real estate firm.

your opinion will be highly appreciated especially if you're a professional in the construction industry.
Both r ok if they pay good enough, depends on where u will work from office or site and what ur interests are

As a civil engineer if you like design, structural analysis and practicality then construction is good. However u might be in the office.

Real estate - they can make u project manager

1. A real estate firm is only about building construction and little on roads (which they often contract to construction companies) while a construction company worth its salt can handle roads, bridges, Telecom towers, etc.....you get better experience in a construction company.

2. Real Estate firms have other departments they deem more important than the Engineering Department, namely the Business Development, accounts and Marketing Departments. The Management will readily keep these departments operating in full swing in a swanky, air-conditioned corporate office while Site Engineers will be under one mango tree, on the site. The office people will still have a hard-on for you because of the little allowances you get, and, lemme tell you, they are closer to the MD than you! They are there in meetings and can suggest all manner of things to make life hard for you in the name of improving the Company bottom line.

Please take the construction company and train hard in design and Project Management, obtaining certifications in them if you can. It will help you run your own company.

You must have guessed it by now that I'm speaking from experience.

Hello,
Thank you for this question.
Since you have gone for the interview, I will suggest you select a firm that has your career growth and rewards at heart.
I always tell my clients that it is their responsibility to meet all of their professional goals, not that of their bosses.
So when selecting, check very well by asking questions during interview especially.
Always ask yourself, where you will be with the company in the next 5 years; financially and professionally.
Good luck.

Start with construction, get the vast knowledge needed both locally and internationally. You can switch to real estate later if you so desire for diversity

do you want to start on your own or considering working in a company?
As an experience Architect, working with construction companies for 13 years now, I would advise you to pick construction company over a real estate if you want to work with an organisation. But make sure the company is the one that can withstand the test of time. Not the one that will be owning workers salary

I've a construction company startup. I applied for both companies and was interviewed , I don't have any clue about their salaries as I haven't gotten any appointment letter yet.
I have worked at the highest levels of both.
If your target is to gather experience, then go for a good construction company but if you like to do things in a mundane repeated manner then real estate is for you.

In my opinion, as a young Civil Engineer, I think it is better to start from a consulting firm to garner good design experience (companies like Arup, Desicon, Omonitan & Abe etc) then move to a construction company to gather money and construction experience as a Project Engineer or Project manager or Resident Engineer (companies like Cappa & D'Alberto, Julius Berger, El-Alan etc.) Real estate firms do not add much to you in terms of experience and money except the real estate firm also doubles as a construction firm otherwise, you will just be another Property manager or even a glorified facility manager in a real estate firm.

Real estate firm is the best.
Re: Construction Company Vs Real Estate Firm For A Civil Engineer by ocelot2006(m): 7:32pm On Mar 20, 2021
I think I concur with almost everything and join them in suggesting that you start in construction as it is broader. That gives you the opportunity to go through projects before settling for an area of specialization (structural, transport/highway, etc). The building sector, in my opinion, may be a bit too focused for you for now.
Re: Construction Company Vs Real Estate Firm For A Civil Engineer by Baselm: 10:38pm On Mar 20, 2021
You stand to make more money in the real estate industry, but you learn more in the construction company and the experience would be invaluable. As a civil engineer, I find building very boring, because there are lots of more technical and interesting structures to construct than just building houses where you will be in competition with bricklayers, architects, surveyors, quantifiers etc who all claim to be engineers on building sites.

Construction for sure.

You would be exposed to a variety of civil disciplines and build yourself a solid foundation.

Real estate/developer. If you are not the owner of firm, you won't enjoy it. It's also a narrow career path for a civil guy to follow. It's basically residential construction with most building plans already in place. You would just likely be a site supervisor or supretendent and that's about it. The municipal aspect of the development would still highly likely be contracted out to a construction firm.
thanks

As a Civil Engineer, go for construction company that is if the company doesn't limit their activities only on Building but involve in other construction like Road, bridge, Retaining wall e.t.c that's where you can get full knowledge of structural design and analysis which is the key discipline of Civil Engineers.

Real Estate work is mainly on Building and it's even worse if the company only doing bungalow.
it's one of the leading Construction companies in a south west state.

Before you advice anyone on issues please be experienced in it.. Firstly what aspect of real estate are you talking about ? Is it marketing or construction of various unit of housing. Where there might be profit sharing if you happen to make sales. However it won't be much of an experience to you at the long run, because just anyone can be a marketer.. Having spend more than 7 years in the construction industry in almost all aspects. Road , bridges , towers, and even the dangote refinery and Petrochemical project.. I will advise you to go for construction, the experience is second to non. You will grow in your career, and who says you can't do both.. you can be working on site and as well posting blocks of duplexes , terraces and others on social media and even be contracted for private project. trust me you better of in the Construction industry as a great start to a career.
Well done my civil Engineer.
I really appreciate your advise sir. it's a site Enginneering role not marketing (for the real estate). will I be allowed to do a private practice while working for a construction company?
how feasible is that?

thanks.

This depends on the staff strength of the organizations. They are both very challenging aspects of practice that mostly require your presence always except of course you have attained management position and have people assigned under you.
