Hey Car-landers, so,I've been wondering. Why is the Toyota Tacoma despite being the better car, more tech and luxury packed usually cheaper than the hilux?

First, let me state why I feel the Tacoma is a better vehicle. At least from the view point of a layman. (Petrol engines were used for the comparison)

1. Engine: The Toyota Tacoma of all models come with bigger V6 engines with some rare variants packing V8, while the hilux starts at the 2.7L I4 engine which gives better fuel mileage by the way but produces less torque.

2. Interior: Y'all would agree with me the interiors can't ever be compared with the Tacoma clearly having the better finishes when compared head to head by years and models.

3. Size: The Tacoma is bigger hence has more room for load. I also believe it should have the better towing power especially when you upgrade to the TRD.

With these but a few mentioned, It makes me wonder when I see some adverts even here on nairaland asking ridiculous amounts for Nigerian used Hilux pick-ups of even 2007 model. Amounts that can buy a very clean foreign used 08-09 Tacoma.

Personally I'd prefer the Tacoma being the "better vehicle" but the prices do not reflect my realities; hence I ask. Exactly what makes the Toyota Hilux more expensive than the Toyota Tacoma?

Hilux is cheaper brand new but Tacoma is easier to get (North America) and Hilux is only sold in Australia and Asia so that explains it.

Bro its just simply demand that is steering up the price, it's been used government agencies, police patrol, escorts, military, you just name it. Tacoma is an American designed pickup, do you know hilux are banned in the USA.
Its just an inferior pickup truck compared to Tacoma.
The law of economics does not apply to cars
The higher the demand the lower the price
But we all know Toyota corolla for Uber does not worth its price but due to the demand

Because Tacoma is a US market truck.

People's impression of the Hilux used by govt is that it is very reliable, but idea worked for the 504 until reality sets in. But for now watch and learn..



In most market with the Hilux, it goes head to head with a range but with tacoma it is undisputed king

The impression is still true for both.
504's problem was just influx of very low quality parts from God knows where from the mid 90s.
Then for the hilux, it's just a basic car with a very strong,abuse tolerant engine and less orishirishi.
Ordinary airbag wasn't even available till very recently so of course it would spoil less frequently

You don talk am finish! Their engines I think the 2TR are basically bullet proof! See interior be like bololo field. I believe Toyota got inspiration for the interior of the camry from the hilux

from personal experience, hilux is far reliable and rugged than ranger. Hilux takes abuse like hell.

Yeah about the hilux and Ranger, I guess so too. It's the F250 that's usually pitted against the Tundra.

OP, point of correction, a Tacoma is never cheaper than a Hilux. Except the Tacoma has fault or its a distressed sales.

A 2005 Tacoma goes for around 5-7m tokumbo. How much does a tokumbo Hilux of that year go for?

You're wrong. Tacoma don't compete with F150. The Bigger Tundra does.

For that segment of mid sized pick up trucks, the Tacoma hold its own well and does a very thorough job. The Americans love it and its got some serious cult followership.

You're right. Those yotas are very very reliable and rugged. Juzt that they are spartan interior wise and are quite harsh to drive.
