There are two options to climbing the career ladder in the private sector.

A. Staying loyal to your company and gradually climbing through the ranks

Pros
1. You gain a lot of benefit that comes with loyalty. The remunerations and benefits increase as you spend more years within the coy. In some private companies, you may be eligible for pension and gratuity; and in some, your allotted vacation time increases with time.

2. The job becomes easy over time and you get more settled within the job. You’re familiar with the basics, this translates to less stress.

Cons
1. There could be massive competition amongst your teammates. As an example, a group of 20 trainees recruited at the same time will have to compete for like 1-2 positions during promotion. This could get nasty especially in an organization with lots of unprofessional colleagues. The unprofessional ones I’m talking about are the ones who gossip around to bring people down, the individuals who pay with their genitals and the stooges who lick behinds.

2. Your value may be downplayed. Your best bet is to up your game by adding professionalism and excellence to your service; else you’re just another employee they’ve seen all he/she has to offer.

3. Thin/Scanty resume with limited industry experience. Your experience can best be referred to as homogeneous.

4. In a situation where your bosses have favourites, you might be in for a long thing. Your promotion may not come in 10 years especially if they don’t like you; politicking has never left the corporate environment and it won’t end on you.

5. You’re not immune to mass retrenchment.

B. Gaining experience for a limited time and applying for the next position elsewhere.

A valid sample is Mr. A who currently works as a team supervisor with Fidelity bank. Mr. A works for 2 years and applies to GTBank as station Manager. Mr. A works with GTB for 3 years and applies as Regional manager with Ecobank.....and it goes on like that.

Pros
1. If you know how to write mouth-watering resumes, you will climb up the corporate ladder faster than another individual who chose to remain in a particular company for tons of years. Don’t be surprised you may rise faster above your former bosses in your former places of work.

2. You get to meet new professionals randomly and your social game is top notch. You don’t get stuck with racist/hateful bosses/colleagues for a long time.

3. Your resume is hot. If you know what you’re doing, you should be getting employment invitation calls every month. Recruiters love individuals who have worked across different companies in a particular industry.

4. You gain wealth of experience and your management skills improve. You would have managed different types of individuals and this would have properly tailored your management skills towards excellence.

5. You’re hardly a victim of mass retrenchment, Why? You are the one who fires each company before they fire you (if it ever happens).

Cons
1. You may end up with no retirement benefit/gratuity.

2. You have to re-learn, unlearn, learn new procedures every time you change company. This could be tough for the mentally feeble individuals.

3. Your family may be at disadvantage as you may need to carry them around each time you get a new job; especially one that is located in another geographical location.

Great write up Sir,

I personally prefer type B because I am the adventurous type. I love to try new things, acquire new skills and meet new set of people unlike type A that stays at a particular job for years and they might be obsolete in a matter of time.

Thank you sir. I like that you enjoyed my article.

However we’re the same, I enjoy adventure too. Today, I’ve risen above former bosses because I’m always applying to the next position once I spend 6 months in a position.

Finally, I have seen someone like me...... Working in a company for more than 6 months makes the job boring and I don't like that. Where I'm working now, I've spent just 4 month and I'm bored already.

I hope this post makes front page for more knowledge people to contribute there opinion.

Both are okay, depending on what you want as a person. "B" will most likely guarantee lightening fast growth while "A" may advance you slowly but give other perks that come with trust.

I personally was doing "B" when I first started out but I am now learning to calm down with "A" recently. Wetin person dey find sef wink

Great Article OP.

It is good to remain Loyal and also Good to move on to gain experience.
Whatever works for you.
It all depends.

Start a side business/hustle also. If not, you will always be massaging another man's balls for a living. Life is too short to be unhappy 5 times a week and only two days of freedom.

Good topic. I learnt my lesson the hard way.

Years ago, I was in a small company, growing up and managing a small team. I was loyal and wasn't looking at outside offers. The funny thing was that my duty had to do with verifying and approving quotes by suppliers and I was being offered good money by suppliers but I never took a kobo.
A rival company wanted to poach me, doubled my salary with a car, I refused cos I was loyal and stupid. Stuck to the place I was using commercial vehicles to run their job. The MD made it look like I was the starboy.

Not too long, the MD started accusing the junior staff of various things and I always defended them. Next thing, he moved out on to accusing me of collecting his clients. That day, I wanted to die. I was accused of something I had never done or even thought of. Even customers with heavy jobs were interfacing with me directly and I finished their jobs end to end without collecting 1 kobo on the side. Out of annoyance, I resigned from the company. No contributory pension, nothing. That's when Starboy turned to Speed Darlington. grin

I eventually set up my own business and the next time my former MD saw me within 6 months, he started lamenting to people in my former office that his former clients gave me jobs worth millions. That was when I fully concentrated on collecting his clients proper.

In retrospect, I should have cross-carpeted to different companies as my experience would have been wider and contact base bigger. There are certain things you learn by working in different places which I haven't learnt. That's why some of us attend expensive MBAs and LBS courses because despite the money and business growth, that vast corporate experience we lack it.

If you want quick jump in pay best bet is to move from coys to coys, strategically though.

Staying in a particular organization for a long time may affect your financial growth negatively. Remember as one move from one job to another, his engagement salary keeps increasing unlike waiting for pay rise which is always very insignificant most times. Also also resume that carry an experience in three or more organizations will have an edge over a resume in one organisation.

Loyalty is a truthful behaviour that enmamate from a core nature of being. we are slow as far as understanding why it is, but apparently we support it as in a passive consciouse way.

Manifest loyalty. It's rewarding. Its a conscious unconscious truth.
Re: Loyalty To A Company Vs Gaining Experience And Moving To Another Company by Nobody: 8:06pm On Mar 29, 2021
I fell in love with my job, not in love with my company.

I left my former company just working in 6 months and I felt so guilty because another opportunity came which I took, deep down I feel like not taking the step, I looked at myself as a job prostitute. I braced myself and understood the reality that people don't really care about you but what you do for them and once they are done utilizing your skills, they discard you. Moved on and got almost triple.

I believe there is no loyalty anywhere, a former CEO where i worked collected funding of $10M+ and our salaries still remained the same, no changes whatsoever and we all worked like Jackie! for more than 3 years. Affliction shall not rise again sayeth the LORD.

Job hoping can also affect your CV as HR & recruiters will see it as a red flag, so I try to keep it at a minimal or just remove it completely from my CV. Make God no shame us.
