Let dem continue with their initial gragra
They won't, they have the numbers, I might be wrong all the numbers of the banks involved combined does not reach the subscriber base of MTN. If the Government want to achive Banking inclusion, its only through the Telcos they can achieve it.

I don't think the issue is restricted to only USSD transactions, I've not been able to receive otp on my mtn line for online transactions since this issue started. I just hope they resolve it quickly cause mtn will surely loose this battle

While I do not know the origin of their feud, I still believe MTN is at fault. Have you wondered why only MTN has problem with every bank? not even just with a bank.
I advise you read up on the origins then

A very very wealthy and powerful expatriate company, I think I support MTN on this one. The banks are too greedy, after the massive returns they're making after investing the massive cash base in they custody, they charge so many exorbitant charges on the same customers, really not fair.

Nonsense, what is there to broker; Minister of digital economy that is meant to be happy for Fintech companies, abi is he not meant to do anything to help the Fintech companies grow. angry

This is of course an opportunity for other platforms to shine, especially the indigenous ones, I spot flutterwave.

Imagine I develop an online payment system which is then adopted by mtn giving me and my team 2.5% of every recharge made through my app, that percentage looks small but volume matters.

Quite interesting to see people support MTN on this, has MTN reduced calls or data rates or any of their services to justify the reduction in commission rate.

What reason(s) has MTN provided to reduce commission arbitrarily whereas other Telcos didn't.

The new platforms they are promoting are just smokescreens, MTN has agenda they are working on to push everyone out of the market. While I am less bothered about the banks, I am for the SMEs (or are you unaware roadside, paper-based and e-recharge commission is also affected).

The same matter is brewing with electricity companies, they keep reducing commission for SMEs whereas the electricity rate keeps going up.

MTN don't want anyone to make money in their space (every unit in MTN boost of cost reduction), whereas same MTN is encroaching other market space i.e selling inverter.

How a South African company plans to kill SMEs and Nigerians are in support baffles me.

They were making millions before the bank transfer so they won't really care, both of them will lose but the banks will lose more because almost all household have mtn line.

Well said do you know how much they made 2020 fiscal year on just data alone over 300 billion naira, not to talk of airtime, equally the banks too make billions daily from various trades, my brother there's money to be made on both sides, USSD na small thing e day generate on both sides, but like every business person every Kobo count's. Na just two greedy warriors. Their headache.

If the banks were not owing the telcos habitually I don't think MTN would have made such a move.

Going forward the addition of the fintechs into the fray is a welcomed development, these banks are getting more greedy

The banks are the thief here, we have private platforms that sell Airtime and data at a discounted rate, but the banks never do that. They will charge the actual rate and on top, still charge for SMS notification.

Those of you that are saying mtn will win

It will shock you mtn provides network for most of the banks which definitely they will lose

Recharging via fintech and other platforms, how do you introduce the cash into the platforms, you will either use your bank debit cards or pay cash, I dont get it,

Fintech dont have CBN licence to run accounts,

Both parties need each other to strive and make profits, they should settle the issue amicably

Nigeria always inconvenienting people, now we are force to borrow airtime from mtn which is a plus to MTN in disguise because it's a discounted airtime. It's a disguise to prosper MTN this few weeks at our deriment because millions of people will be force to borrow at reduced value. Shame on Nigeria govt

What do you mean by greedy Banks? Do you really understand what is happening? Before, the only share MTN banks get was 4% out of the recharge but now MTN wants banks to take half of what they get formerly. If you were the one, would you accept?

My own is, whatever code they are rolling out or link, them them make it very secured.
Not the one you use today and before u know it, you will start receiving debit alert up and down.
The bank will not be willing to help out oo cos they will like the link to have problem so that MTN will come on their knees.

the banks will loose, infact they v lost already,
they re greedy, do you know that these banks have increased you charges over the years? Charges for atm use, charges for ussd used, card maintenance charges, when you do transaction online they deduct convienience fee...
And over the years interest rate on savings is being reduced....
So, strategically they re milking everybody, you will know this when you check their statements of account per yer, which runs into billions of $.. and yet a common man cant get a loan from them... Except the mega rich men.
Thats what mtn was saying, that the banks have a standard they use, and that over the years they v reduce their interest, and increase charges, so mtn also is using the standard rate for them too.. Which is 2.5% in all civilised countries.
There a thief was caught, they went aflame,
mtn was right, ride on mtn
