The headquarters of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has confirmed an attack on it custodial centre in Owerri in Imo state by unknown gunmen leading to escape of 1,844 inmates while 35 inmates refused to escape.

In a statement made available to Blueprint Monday in Abuja, the Service spokesman, Francis Enobore, said the attackers stormed the facility at about 0215hrs on Monday 5th April, 2021, gained entrance into the yard by using explosives to blast the administrative block.

“The Owerri Custodial Centre in Imo State has been attacked by unknown gunmen and forcefully released a total of 1,844 inmates in custody.

“They were said to have arrived the centre in their large number in several Hilux pick-up vans and Sienna Buses armed with sophisticated weapons and immediately engaged the security personnel on duty in a fierce gun battle. They eventually detonated the explosive to gain entrance.

“The Acting Controller-General of Corrections, John Mrabure has ordered a comprehensive investigation into the incident and in collaboration with other security organizations, commenced a search and recover operations to recapture the fleeing inmates.

“While appealing to the good citizens of Imo State and indeed Nigerians to volunteer useful intelligence that will facilitate the recovery effort, the Ag. Controller-General wishes to assure that the security of custodial centres in the country remains sacrosanct.”

The statement said the NCoS has equally directed all officers attached to custodial facilities to remain vigilant at the moment.

“As at the last count, 6 inmates have so far voluntarily returned to the facility while 35 inmates refused to escape from custody during the attack.”

Nigeria is doomed.

EL-Rufai said Kaduna is almost 8 million people but the entire police force in Kaduna state is 11,000 people.

how can 11,000 people police 8 million people. Lagos can't boast of 30,000 police people. Nigeria has less than 400k police force. no weapons, no training, salaries and entitlements are not paid. The entire population of our Army, Airforce, Navy, Police, civil defence is not up to 2 million people. We are almost 200 million in population.

The pattern of prison break will continue. Bokoharam started it to free their men that were captured. IPOB has joined the same patter. unfortunately, we don't have an accurate data base to track the criminals.

The Youth in South East are tired of the uncountable police posts and checkpoints in the East. they have now resorted to killing them. police are scared to stand on roads. in fact they now wear plain cloths to work.

If anyone can't see that Nigeria is headed to the cesspit, needs an eye check.

Every region in Nigeria is bedevilled with all sorts of carnage.

We will see more police men being killed, police station robbed with weapons carted away in the East, soon, Niger Delta and South West will follow.

Every country elect leaders to make life better but Nigeria made a historical mistake with Buhari. In all these, the guy dey London dey catch cruise.

probably watching BBC. he can't be bothered

Nigerian Army Nd Police came to Orlu and kidnapped elderly women and men. Accused them to be IPOB and kept them in cell since months and weeks now. Arrested all white garment church pastors in the land. And you say the prison shouldn't be broken?

Why does the government love breaking folks out of prison like we don't have vigilantes? Why?

Every single time they want to tarnish any entity, they spring prisoners out of prisons.

And this is how the easterner nigeria region will breed another version of terror. People are okay with it now, chanting support and all. Hope when the cock comes home to roost, we will be spared the wailing and complaints?

Finally ooo.....it's about to GO DOWN.

This was how it always start...small small like that.

Remember the killing of a Prince in Vienna that made WW1 and the rise of the Third Reich that made the man Adolf Hitler leading to WW2.

Let's be careful not to make a monster out of Ipob and give fewer group of persons so much powers to turn to tyrants, funny enough this is what this group want.

Nigerians should learn, we have fought a civil war and it was not in the best interest of anyone as so many souls and resources were wasted.Let us negotiate a peaceful coexistence or saperation instead of blood spilling.

The Hausa Fulani government of Buhari should understand that everyone in this country are stakeholders in it and should be listened to.
