The balkanization was purely due to the politics of crude oil.
Same thing was done in Edo state. Part of Egbema Kingdom is in Edo and Delta. The Agadagba of Egbema (The Beni-Pere) has his subjects in both Delta and Edo states.

Yorubas are rewriting the Ijaw history in Ondo state largely because they control the media. Ijaws over there compounded the problem the moment some of them started taking Yoruba names.

Taking foreign names is a widespread issue among among Ijaws generally, but the one in Ondo state was not strategically thought out in terms of politics.

However, Yorubas sole claim over Ondo state is only on paper.
Ijaws have always, and will always confront them in the battlefield whenever they overstep their bounds.
