The attention of the Defence Headquarters is drawn to numerous publications in the media and other online blogs reporting massive killing and destruction of houses and other property by the military in Konshisha LGA of Benue State. The Defence Headquarters which has oversight responsibility for Operation WHIRL STROKE deployed to maintain peace in Benue, Nasarawa and Taraba States, has deemed it necessary to refute these spurious allegations and put the records straight. There have been incessant cases of communal clashes in recent times between the people of Konshisha and Oju over boundary demarcation. As part of efforts to resolve the crisis, the Benue State Government held series of meetings with stakeholders from both local governments with a view to arriving at amicable solution to the problem. Appreciable progress has been made and a final date fixed for all stakeholders to meet in the disputed areas to fully demarcate the boundary so that peace could reign. Trouble however started on the eve of the final meeting during Easter holiday, with reports that fresh fighting has broken out in the area. All along, 72 Special Forces Battalion has troops deployed on the Oju side of the boundary and troops of the Battalion were on their way to replenish their colleagues on 5 April 2021, when they were attacked by armed bandits at Bonta in Konshisha. The troops who were under command of a Captain were seized at a checkpoint mounted by the so called “Bonta Boys” and taken into Konshisha forest where they were all brutally murdered. Not satisfied with killing the soldiers, the bandits proceeded to burn all the eleven soldiers and their officer beyond recognition while their weapons and ammunition were carted away. Military reinforcements were dispatched to Bonta the following morning. Unfortunately, the reinforcement also came under attack from close to 500 armed youths who by this time had fully occupied Bonta. The sheer number of youths involved in the attacks suggests that the armed bandits cannot be from Bonta alone, but were joined by bandits from other parts of Konshisha LGA. The military repelled the attack after more than 4 hours of intense fighting during which military helicopter provided close air support to ground troops. Ten armed bandits were killed during the fight with the rifle of one of the Killed in action soldiers recovered from the bandits who fell casualty during the exchange of fire. The Defence Headquarters wish to put it on record that apart from this initial 10 bandits, there are no other civilian casualties recorded in any part of Konshisha till date. We therefore challenge anybody from Konshisha to present to the public the 200, 70 or 30 dead bodies of innocent persons, male, female or children killed by troops in Konshisha. There was never a massacre as being touted by some mischief makers. The remnants of the armed bandits that escaped from Bonta withdrew into neighbouring villages where they kept on attacking troops as they continued with the search operation through Bonta into other parts of Konshisha. Knowing the implications of killing troops in cold blood, most of the villagers fled their homes which were then occupied by armed bandits who kept firing at troops from the settlements as they advanced into Konshisha. Troops repelled the attacks and destroyed the houses and other buildings which the criminals used as hideout for the attacks. The use of abandoned settlements by armed bandits to attack troops is popular with insurgents. The aim is to draw military fire into the dwellings and then turn round to blame soldiers for the destruction. This is common guerilla tactics armed bandit designed to whip up public sentiment against security forces and this is what played out in Konshisha. This accounts for some of the burnt houses being reported in the press. Some of the phones of the dead soldiers were also tracked to some of the settlements. We should therefore blame the armed bandits for the destruction since they used these settlements as hideout for attacks. It will be wrong to blame soldiers who are in Konshisha on legitimate duties when some of them were murdered in cold blood. Some of the buildings being paraded today were actually burnt during earlier communal clashes between Konshisha and Oju, all of which the sponsors of the mayhem are now blaming on the military. Finally, the Defence Headquarters wishes to state that soldiers deployed to Konshisha displayed commendable restraints by adhering to the rules of engagement in the face of unprovoked attacks and therefore deserve accolades. In addition to the return of all carted away weapons, the local leaders of Konshisha must bring the main actors responsible for the mayhem to security forces to face justice. They must also surrender all other weapons in their possession. The military will not tolerate the jungle justice attitude and dastardly acts leading to the gruesome murder of patriotic soldiers on legitimate duty to keep the peace. We look forward to working with the Benue State Government in its promise to support security forces in fishing out those fomenting trouble in Konshisha. Once again, there is no massacre in Konshisha and the stories making the rounds are fabricated by bandits and their sponsors to smear the military after murdering troops in cold blood. Whyem15:The soldiers that lead the attack are English. They were deployed from England. The English soldiers shot dead Irish on Irish territory. Northern ireland is a semi autonomous country. The British soldiers were shooting anything that moved(It seems the Nigerian army learn from them). They won't do such a thing on English soil. And I think this happened in the early 70's. How many scottish have been shot dead when they were protesting for a referendum to be held? How many Catalonians have been shot dead by the Spanish army? I think there is presently riots in either some scottish or Northern Irish cities because they want a referendum to be held again. I've not heard of anyone getting shot dead yet. |

THE Imo State Commissioner of Police, Nasiru Mohammed, and his top officers have been booted out following Monday’s attack on the state Police Command headquarters and the Nigerian Custodial Centre which led to the release of 600 suspects and 1,884 inmates from the correctional facility. The PUNCH gathered on Thursday that Mohammed was removed alongside the Deputy Commissioner, Operations, Ilyasu Yahaya; and Assistant Commissioner, Operations, James Aikai, by the Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu. Adamu, who was also relieved of his appointment by the Presidency while at the scene of the attack, announced the removal of the three officers while addressing the men of the command. A senior police officer said the CP was found to have neglected to ask for reinforcement from Mobile Police Squadrons 18 and 64 and the military during the attack carried out by suspected Indigenous People of Biafra members. The security source stated, “Apart from failing to act on the intelligence provided to him about two weeks ago, the CP also failed to draft the Mobile Police Force on standby during the attack. There were PMF Squadrons 18 and 64 in the state, but the commissioner did not signal any of them to assist in repelling the attack. This is gross negligence. “The CP, DCP and ACP Operations were all redeployed while the Assistant Commissioner of Police, Administration, is the acting CP now. They were redeployed to Abuja because you can’t send incompetent officers to any state.” The source said investigations had confirmed that IPOB carried out the attack in a move to rescue some of their top commanders and chief priest arrested by the police last month. “They were not aware that the 16 suspects had been moved to Abuja. So, they attacked the CID with the intention of rescuing the men. Why the Force Headquarters is disappointed is that the CP got the intelligence report about two weeks ago that IPOB may attack the command, but he did not act on it,” the senior officer explained. Our correspondent further gathered that the Joint Security Task Force in the state codenamed, Operation Search and Flush, had not been active following the failure of the state government to pay the men allowances and provide the necessary logistics. Had it been active, the task force, it was learnt, would have greatly assisted in repelling the attack by the gunmen on the security facilities. It was learnt that the task force members drawn from the Police, Civil Defence, Navy, Army, Mobile Police and others, were being owed eight months’ allowances by the state government. A source said, “The joint security team used to assist the command in gathering intelligence and operations, but the state government abandoned the structure and allowed it to collapse. They have not been paid for over eight months and the state also did not fuel their vehicles. So, they stopped working; the intelligence gathering of the state is down.” Our correspondent was informed that the premises of the Imo State Police Command headquarters had been taken over by pubs and restaurants and shops with the female police officers selling all manners of wares inside their vehicles parked within the grounds. A senior police officer on special duty in the state observed, “The Imo State Command headquarters is just like Wuse market; every woman police working there sells boxers, T-shirts and other stuffs in their vehicles parked around the command. “Do you know those who are coming to patronise them are coming to gather intelligence on the command? You also have restaurants there; people selling Okpa (bean delicacy) are there. So, how do you guarantee security there? That’s the problem.” The Force Public Relations Officer, Frank Mba, a commissioner of police, could not be reached for comment on the investigation into the attack as calls to his number indicated that it was unreachable. He had yet to respond to a text message as of the time of filing this report. https://punchng.com/imo-cp-failed-to-request-mopol-military-reinforcement-source/ The funny thing is this CP can still become the IGP of police in future ![]() |

As for the claims of marginalization and ethnic sidlining, every president in the fourth republic has been accused of same. The only difference is that the people who play the ethnic cards now have a wider reach especially with the use of social media. If it doesn't destroy us, it will definitely make us a Stronger.

The solution varies. they can start by gathering intel in the area before they act. Put the leaders there on govt parole and turn them into informants. talk to those in leadership positions in the area and they might point you in the right direction. enticing people work. trying to subjugate people doesn't. burning down things that are important to the people is to make them see you as the devil. increase security presence in the area etc. I'm no expert, but some things are just common sense. we've seen multiple cops get shot in America, the police didn't burn down the whole neighborhood. unleashing aggression on those who aren't responsible is unprofessionalism. but above all, job creation and education is key. Imagine Nigeria as a country, where a baby can be born, live up to 90yrs and die, without ever having its existence on record with the govt, no interaction, nothing. That's not good. Nigeria need databases upon databases lol, alas we seem to not believe in record keeping or registering births and deaths. Ppl won't care about a country that provides them with nothing, not even security. zero quality of life in that country. ppl pee and sheet wherever they want, leave dead bodies on the side of the road for weeks, dump trash wherever, these are things that affect people's quality of life m and we seem to not care about it. we sure have a long way to go Covert1: |

People like FFK use ethnic gaps to score cheap political points when it is convenient for them but when they get caught, they manufacture some relationship with the maligned ethnic group out of thin air. Come 2023, the president will change, appointments will change but the use of ethnic cards for politics won't change irrespective of what happens. There are over 300 ethnic groups on Nigeria but three ethnic groups feel all the appointments/position should be given to them. Credit: Tolu Ogunlesi.

You should redefine your idea of community. Unless there are 5 people living in that community, you and the military will have to proof to everyone how every single person in the said community colluded and worked against the military. you have proof of that? because I'm sure some of those affected are innocent people minding their own business. you keep saying community as if everyone there was in on something bad. so maybe there might be a few collaborators, that does not encompass the whole community JOSCOFELIX: |

DubaiLandLord:The Nigerian police is bad but the police in the US is not exactly better with extra-judicial killings of unarmed black men. In fact the violent equipments used by most police departments in the US are on par with most militaries. Does that excuse the Nigerian police, no but picking and choosing to suit personal dispositions is not objective. And generally police the world over can be a pain in the ar.se though I think police officers in western European countries are the best. We all know about our police, and until something is done about them my advice just avoid them. I beg to defer as to the armed forces. The Nigerian Army is a very professional Army, the best in Africa and one of the most professional in the world. If you choose to list the negatives there are more positives to them from holding the integrity of Nigeria together to peace enforcement and peace keeping operations around the world. But the focus here is the military response in Konshisha let's not deviate. It is unpardonable under the circumstances to allow a community the affront to murder unprovoked an officer and soldiers of the Nigerian Army in cold blood while on legitimate duties. That is unacceptable and must be met with the appropriate response. You have to understand how militaries function as a professional organization one of which is accountability for every man, material and weapon. It beholves the leaders there to produce the criminal elements who did this. I for one I'm terribly pained by the unprovoked loss of those soldiers for no just cause. This is not a jungle. |

I'm not trying to tell you anything chief. so if the suspects where there and arrested, why the burning and destruction? what goal did that achieve? if you have a suspect, arrest them and gather more intel. again, weak police presence is why these things keep happening. soldiers shouldn't even have the right to make arrests unless they were given the mandate. I will always love the military, but won't support certain actions i see as unacceptable. JOSCOFELIX: |

Ddream6627:not everybody was part of the killing but when the military came to the village begging them to share information about the criminal but they refuse , if you are not among the people that kill the solider then share information with the solider. rather they hid them. the nigeria army is not like the nigeria police that they killed their men and will not revenge. lthe military siad if the village head and the people that hide the solider do not produce their equipment between the coming week then they should be ready for war. |

Covert1:On what basis are you saying the Nigerian army is the best in Africa? The same army that have been struggling against Boko Haram and ISWAP for years? People are still in IDP camps in Borno state. You can't compare the numbers of people killed extrajudicially by the police in Nigeria to that of the US police killing. The numbers of checkpoint on the Ikorodu-itokin-ijebu ode-ibadan expressway is so scary. The day there was an accident because of the illegal stop and search on that road, the accident happened at a checkpoint before the interchange on that axis. Cars were burnt, people died. Immediately the accident happened, I was told the police fled. |
