EricBraven:
The attention of the Defence Headquarters is drawn to numerous publications in the media and other online blogs reporting massive killing and destruction of houses and other property by the military in Konshisha LGA of Benue State. The Defence Headquarters which has oversight responsibility for Operation WHIRL STROKE deployed to maintain peace in Benue, Nasarawa and Taraba States, has deemed it necessary to refute these spurious allegations and put the records straight.

There have been incessant cases of communal clashes in recent times between the people of Konshisha and Oju over boundary demarcation. As part of efforts to resolve the crisis, the Benue State Government held series of meetings with stakeholders from both local governments with a view to arriving at amicable solution to the problem. Appreciable progress has been made and a final date fixed for all stakeholders to meet in the disputed areas to fully demarcate the boundary so that peace could reign. Trouble however started on the eve of the final meeting during Easter holiday, with reports that fresh fighting has broken out in the area.

All along, 72 Special Forces Battalion has troops deployed on the Oju side of the boundary and troops of the Battalion were on their way to replenish their colleagues on 5 April 2021, when they were attacked by armed bandits at Bonta in Konshisha. The troops who were under command of a Captain were seized at a checkpoint mounted by the so called “Bonta Boys” and taken into Konshisha forest where they were all brutally murdered. Not satisfied with killing the soldiers, the bandits proceeded to burn all the eleven soldiers and their officer beyond recognition while their weapons and ammunition were carted away. Military reinforcements were dispatched to Bonta the following morning. Unfortunately, the reinforcement also came under attack from close to 500 armed youths who by this time had fully occupied Bonta. The sheer number of youths involved in the attacks suggests that the armed bandits cannot be from Bonta alone, but were joined by bandits from other parts of Konshisha LGA. The military repelled the attack after more than 4 hours of intense fighting during which military helicopter provided close air support to ground troops. Ten armed bandits were killed during the fight with the rifle of one of the Killed in action soldiers recovered from the bandits who fell casualty during the exchange of fire.

The Defence Headquarters wish to put it on record that apart from this initial 10 bandits, there are no other civilian casualties recorded in any part of Konshisha till date. We therefore challenge anybody from Konshisha to present to the public the 200, 70 or 30 dead bodies of innocent persons, male, female or children killed by troops in Konshisha. There was never a massacre as being touted by some mischief makers.

The remnants of the armed bandits that escaped from Bonta withdrew into neighbouring villages where they kept on attacking troops as they continued with the search operation through Bonta into other parts of Konshisha. Knowing the implications of killing troops in cold blood, most of the villagers fled their homes which were then occupied by armed bandits who kept firing at troops from the settlements as they advanced into Konshisha. Troops repelled the attacks and destroyed the houses and other buildings which the criminals used as hideout for the attacks. The use of abandoned settlements by armed bandits to attack troops is popular with insurgents. The aim is to draw military fire into the dwellings and then turn round to blame soldiers for the destruction. This is common guerilla tactics armed bandit designed to whip up public sentiment against security forces and this is what played out in Konshisha. This accounts for some of the burnt houses being reported in the press. Some of the phones of the dead soldiers were also tracked to some of the settlements. We should therefore blame the armed bandits for the destruction since they used these settlements as hideout for attacks. It will be wrong to blame soldiers who are in Konshisha on legitimate duties when some of them were murdered in cold blood. Some of the buildings being paraded today were actually burnt during earlier communal clashes between Konshisha and Oju, all of which the sponsors of the mayhem are now blaming on the military.

Finally, the Defence Headquarters wishes to state that soldiers deployed to Konshisha displayed commendable restraints by adhering to the rules of engagement in the face of unprovoked attacks and therefore deserve accolades. In addition to the return of all carted away weapons, the local leaders of Konshisha must bring the main actors responsible for the mayhem to security forces to face justice. They must also surrender all other weapons in their possession. The military will not tolerate the jungle justice attitude and dastardly acts leading to the gruesome murder of patriotic soldiers on legitimate duty to keep the peace. We look forward to working with the Benue State Government in its promise to support security forces in fishing out those fomenting trouble in Konshisha. Once again, there is no massacre in Konshisha and the stories making the rounds are fabricated by bandits and their sponsors to smear the military after murdering troops in cold blood.

On what basis are you saying the Nigerian army is the best in Africa? The same army that have been struggling against Boko Haram and ISWAP for years? People are still in IDP camps in Borno state.

BHT terrorists and ISWAP that was declared the most deadly terrorist groups anywhere in the world. What the Nigerian military accomplished against them within its means has been acknowledged by every military expert as extraordinary even the United States intelligentsia except of course naysayers and haters on Nairaland. Bokos come to die not to fight.

You can't compare the numbers of people killed extrajudicially by the police in Nigeria to that of the US police killing. The numbers of checkpoint on the Ikorodu-itokin-ijebu ode-ibadan expressway is so scary. The day there was an accident because of the illegal stop and search on that road, the accident happened at a checkpoint before the interchange on that axis. Cars were burnt, people died.

Immediately the accident happened, I was told the police fled.

I asked you earlier to mention any country that has defeated ideological armed groups with the use of force alone in the last 30 years. If we are still battling terrorists and armed groups in this country, it is the fault of governments at all levels. The military has done their part in most of the crises and they are not expected to play the non-kinetic part. The only other thing the military can do regarding ISWAP and JAS is to push them temporarily into other countries and I'm very sure those countries won't just watch you do that.

Checkpoints have their advantages and has helped in apprehending several criminals and also prevent crimes in the past. The problem is not with checkpoints, the problem is the quality of our policemen.
The several counties made bodycams compulsory for their officers for a reason.

Yes, literally not sarcasm. Their works speak for them. Perfomance is the right yardstick to judge any military not paper tigers who buckle under pressure. The plethora of conflicts in modern times resolved by the Nigerian military both home and abroad through the use of force and military diplomacy is unsurpassed in Africa.

Something I had said a long time ago which makes strategic sense at least for some time. Export the war elsewhere, this is what big powers do. The US is comfortable with terrorists running amok everywhere except on the homeland. Nigeria has managed to push the war to the fringes of Borno and the Lake Chad islands, there they can be cannon fodders for the Army. President Jonathan was comfortable with that knowing the enormity of the enemy in BHT we are fighting and succeeded in getting them out of Abuja and much of the North. If we won't talk to moderate elements of BHT at this stage of the war they've been severely degraded then bring the big guns out or work to completely export the war totally out of Nigerian territory.

but i doubt the govt can do anything to them legally. if that's possible fox news would be out of business with their constant blatant lies. grin
The military and police should patronize good media outlets, be their guests regularly, give them access to non-sensitive information, this way you destroy negative narratives before they air. the media is a very powerful tool the military isn't properly utilizing.
make appearances thru several networks over the weekends etc. that goes a long way to show the people that you are accountable to them and not afraid to be questioned.

By now NPF should have trained and equipped more than 30,000 operatives for counter insurgency who would take over from the military in NE when operation TT is done and also engage in NW/NC banditry and potential SE/SS insurgency but it is what it is. Police should be the main actors in counter insurgency and not the military, they should only be called in when things get extreme.

The main reason we are faced with Insecurity is just because the government is not taking it as priority like infrastructure. Is buhari going to die if he makes sure atleast $600m is spent on military capital expenditure annually or if he borrows $4bn for border security( border fence, surveillance, bases for military across the borders, establishing a new border protection agency etc). Conducting operations upon operations without securing the borders is just like running around a circle, it won't end, As you kill they recruit, as you recover weapons and ammo they buy more and restock. I don't understand why this is so hard.

I'm not trying to tell you anything chief. so if the suspects where there and arrested, why the burning and destruction? what goal did that achieve? if you have a suspect, arrest them and gather more intel. again, weak police presence is why these things keep happening. soldiers shouldn't even have the right to make arrests unless they were given the mandate. I will always love the military, but won't support certain actions i see as unacceptable.

Let set record straight... The building destroyed were those occupied by the bonta bandits... And other pictures of building destroyed were during communal clashes ... The military did nothing wrong

The immediate past Minister of Interior, Lt.-Gen. Abdul-Rahman Dambazau (rtd), on Friday said the O’odua People’s Congress (OPC) and the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) are extremist groups like Boko Haram.

Dambazau said this at Army War College in Abuja while delivering a lecture to participants of course 5/2021.

He alleged that the two groups were sponsoring a new wave of extremism that could ignite ethnic conflict so as to achieve their aims of dividing the country.

Dambazau said the Police have a critical role to play in quelling recent agitations across the country, “instead of leaving everything for the military”.

“The two groups have been making efforts to ignite nationwide inter-ethnic conflicts through their violent attacks on northern residents or transacting businesses in the south as a quick way to realise their dream for a divided Nigeria.

“We see parallels between Boko Haram and the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and Oodua People’s Congress (OPC) both ethnic extremist groups. All the three groups operate on the platform of extremism,” Dambazau said.

Speaking earlier, the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Ibrahim Attahiru, directed all Nigerian Army training institutions to build appropriate capacities and competencies in order to make the army a formidable force that can tackle all security threats.

He said the college was conceptualised to bridge the training gaps in the area of strategic and tactics among officers of Nigerian Army.

“In this regard, I have directed that all Nigerian Army training institutions should build appropriate capacities and competencies that will make the Nigerian army a formidable force.

“As you are all aware, our nation has been grappling with a myriad of security challenges which includes insurgency, banditry, kidnapping and other forms of criminality across all the states of the federation.

“As daunting as these challenges may be, I strongly believe that they present opportunities for leadership, especially at the operational levels which you currently belong to.

“Therefore, I challenge you to make good use of your time at the college and imbibe knowledge to open your mind to new ideas that enhance the defence and security of our nation.”

The Commandant, Army War College Nigeria, Maj.-Gen. Solomon Udounwa, said the course had 62 participants from the armed forces, other security agencies with three from allied countries of Togo, Liberia and Congo.

Dambazau is one of the most terrible COAS we have had since 1999.

Just look at the nonsense he was doing when Yardua was so sick and after yaradua died.

He was more interested in protecting the Government of his fulani brother. He was part of the people that sideline GEJ and kept the man in the dark.

The likes of Dambazau can never be more patriotic than I am.

I can still remember an interview Ihejirika granted while Ihejirika was still the COAS. He said during the tenure of Dambazau as the COAS, he made him(Ihejirika) serve under a junior Major General. When he approach him(Dambazau) about it, he told him to take it in good faith(can't really remember his exact words).

See the trash he is coming out to say now, what about armed fulani heardsmen, destroying people's farm in the south? If not for the fulani heardsmen menace with their cows, there won't be an amotekun, ESN and UGM.
