One area that can be more challenging in plantain farming is getting market for your fruit. After you have invested material resource and human resources on that farm land, harvest time is the time to know whether you will recover your input or lose everything to buyer who will take advantage of you.

If you spend the whole year caring for your plantain plantation and forget the fact that creating your market start from the day you transplanted the suckers, then you have yourself to blame.

The implication is that your fruit will all produce good yield but you be shock to know that the only available buyer are the bolly (roosted plantain) sellers who will offer to come buy at farm gate and pay you #200 per bunch ( e shock you?)

Or bad enough, you pay labour for harvesting the fruit, pay labour to bring them out of farm and pay transport to take them to the market then you settle down to sell and the wholesalers at the market will be pricing a bunch for #300 or max #400

They will even tell you they are doing you a favour by buying it off from you. Then you tell yourself, these stuff are perishable. The more they stay, the more they lose market value which is actually true.

Sadly you eventually sell them off and return home sad.

Make no such mistakes. The benefit of involving professional in the business is to guard you through a whole planting cycle. I mean to say you need the services of professional like kenfarm who will not only sell viable suckers to you. We sell suckers to our esteem client and continue to give them follow up from pre- planting to planting to post planting.

We would give you some clues as to how to recover your investment within a period of time and we also give you clues as to how to make your plantation sustainable. Because if the plantation is not sustainable, then gaining your investment over a period of time is almost impossible.

For you to accomplish your plan and retrieve your investment, 3 key factors must be played well

1. You must plant a viable sucker

2. Your farm soil must be fertile ( we help you ascertain this )

3. The management of the plantation must be man by an experienced farmer

If any of these factors is faulty, I can assure you frustration will surely set in and you will definitely lose your investment if you do not quickly seek for intervention from experience farmers like kenfarm

Downloading info from Google can never be enough to manage farm. Watching video on you tube can never be a good way to gain skill needed to manage your plantation.

Y?
Because which ever way you manage your plantation depends on

1. The out come of your soil fertility test

2. The geographical location of your farm

3. The biological factors and environmental factors peculiar to your farm

4. The availability of labour

I can go on and on

The bottom line is that those info you get online may not be applicable to your farm due to the factors listed above. Every farm is unique.

For consultation, contact kenfarm on 08038623884

For the purpose of educating kenfarm potential followers and client….pls read the below info:

A client contacted kenfarm help desk and below is his Query

I have a cassava and plantain plantation
Weeds has been a major problem. Manual weeding has been too expensive.
What chemicals can be used without harming the crops sir?
And also what types of fertilizer can be used and at what stage.
Thanks

Below if kenfarm response:

Good day Madam
Controlling weed can be very challenging especially if you have elephant grass as the major weed in by your farm. However, you can apply either contact herbicide or systemic herbicide.
Contact herbicide are often applied during the rain period because it action start just 1hr after application. Rain is not expected to fall on the weed just after applying any herbicide.
Example of contact is paraeforce
Paraeforce act on the leaf

Systemic herbicide is the type of herbicide that start action 12- 24hrs after application. It simply means that after application of systemic herbicide, rain must not fall on the weed for 24hrs else the rain water will dilute the concentration of the herbicide rendering it inactive. The reason I said earlier that contact herbicide is preferred during rain season.
Unlike contact herbicide, systemic herbicide act on the leaf, stem and some time the root depending on the active ingredient.
Example if systemic herbicide is glyphosate.
So for your farm, if the dominant weed is elephant grass, I will recommend you use round-up herbicide or glyphosate herbicide
Follow the manufacturer direction on what Qty to apply
But if your farm weed is other weed and not elephant grass, I will recommend you apply paraeforce mix together with atrazin powder and spray. Atrazin is a herbicide that act on the weed seed and root. It action is even stronger as the rain fall on the weed

As for fertilizer, I may not be able to advice you well enough since I did not do a soil fertility test of your farm soil. I mean to say that the type of fertilizer, Qty of fertilizer and method of application is scientifically dependent on the test result of your soil fertility test. We do soil fertility test and we often put recommendations of how to improve our client soil fertility after retrieving the soil test result
However, if you supply kenfarm with a response to the below questions, then I may be of help in term of what type of fertilizer to apply
1. How old are the crops you intend to apply fertilizer?
2. Have you applied any fertilizer at all since after planting?
3. Did you do a soil test of the soil before cultivation ?
4. What type of crop did you plant

Below is my client follow-up response to my above Questions 1 - 4

Thank you so much for this invaluable information.
In response to your questions:
1. Plantain stems was planted May last year but not producing fruit yet. Only applied fertilizer once at planting stage
2. Cassava planted too last on a plot, growing well but fertilizer applied once too
3. Now finished planting cassava this Monday on an acre- fertilizer applied before planting
4. No soil test was done before planting. Is it too late to do one?

Below is kenfarm response to the above response from our client
In response to your questions:

Client ANS 1. Plantain stems was planted May last year but not producing fruit yet. Only applied fertilizer once at planting stage

Kenfarm Remarks: OK if the plantain was planted in May last year, it is expected to have attain puberty now and must have gotten to the flowering stage. Hence, any application if fertilizer now is a waste of resources for the parent suckers. Though application of fertilizer now to the plantain will be beneficial to the up coming offspring in the next season. But the fertilizer will not be useful for the parent which has already attained puberty.. All the parent sucker need now to come out with big bunches is lot of water and hopefully the fertilizer applied at tender age will be enough to produce quality bunches.
If however the fruit start coming out and u realised it small....consult us

Client ANS 2. Cassava planted too last on a plot, growing well but fertilizer applied once too

Kenfarm Remarks: How tuberous your cassava tuber will grow depends on if you make a heap. If you make no heap and apply fertilizer, the tubers will still not be tuberous. So if you made heap, good but if not, am sorry do not expect a good yield of cassava......we have a book which is collated by experienced cassava farmers together with plant Nutritionist. The book spell out all you need to know on Cassava production and value chain. You may odder for either soft Copt or hard copy. It will be of tremendous help

Client ANS 3. Now finished planting cassava this Monday on an acre- fertilizer applied before planting.

Kenfarm Remarks: if you did not do a soil test before cultivation, it means you be doing a blanket application of fertilizer. But have it in mind that under application of fertilizer and over application of fertilizer are both injurious to the health of your crops. Hence, only critical level is agronomist recommendations.

Client ANS: 4. No soil test was done before planting. Is it too late to do one?

Kenfarm Remarks: It never late to check for a soil fertility. The following factors determines whether or not you need to check the fertility of your soil:
1. If you just acquire a farm land that been pur to use for a long period
2. If you have been practicing continuous cropping system
3. If your yield is becoming poor compare to few years back
4. If you are going to purchase ha of farmland for commercial farming
5. If you want to confirm which crop(s) can grow bear on your farm soil
For more detail please consult with kenfarm 08038623884

It strictly to enlighten ourselves

Kenfarm is pertionate about information sharing on this platform knowing very well the implication of venturing into an investment without full knowledge.

When you seek for information from the reliable source, you are at the long run cutting down on risk factors. Risk factors are peculiar to every Biz and some can only be reduced while some can be eradicated completely most time with the right information.

So when you spend cash on getting information before venturing into that Agric Biz, you are taking the right steps in the right directions. You do not want to experiment with your investment.

Picture showing one of the biggest risk factor for plantain plantation you need to consult expert to fix ahead. Like I said early, some risk factors are avoidable while others which are caused by nature are not avoidable but can be reduced to the bearest minimum.... Do not assume you know enough to stand alone

Purchase our TME production book and get 70% of the info needed as far as cassava value chain is concern.

Cheers!!

It's obvious that the key words to achieving your farm set goals are: Avaluation, Appraisal and followup.... Ensure you sort the advice if professional especially in the area of disease identifying and control.

Bookworm invaded our client farm and workers just busy burning down mature palm tree because they presumed they at dead.

But for Kenfarm intervention, I investigated on why a mature palm tree already fruiting will just die off.

Only to discover bollworm invades the palm center leaf to eat it uploading to complete death of the palm.

If Kenfarm did not identify the source of the mortality maybe the farm workers would have ended up burning the whole palm trees one after the other

Budget expended on consultant is wise busget

Farmers complain that their plantain plantation do not produce again after 3seasons

I have been in this Biz long enough to authoritatively tell you that your plantain plantation can keep producing fruits for as long as you want it to produce (Maybe 10-20yrs)

First you will agree with me that sucker never die but keep multiplying as long as enviromental conditions are favourable.

Now, if you want your plantain plantation to keep producing fruits for so many yrs , then you have to control for the following factors:

1. Plant a viable and desease free sucker like that which you will get from kenfarm

2. Always do what we call gapping every new season

3. Add compost manure like poultry waste to your farm soil every 2season

4. Seek expertise knowledge

5. Do a soil test to ascertain your farm soil fertility at the end of 3seasons

I can go on and on.......consult kenfarm for details

For all those who is been calling us to inform us of how educative our thread is, we say thank you. It for this reason kenfarm post information that are life experience on field and not google copy and paste kind of info

The primary purpose of ploughing is to turn over the upper layer of the soil, bringing fresh nutrients to the surface, while burying weeds and the remains of previous crops and allowing them to break down. The advantages of ploughing are: Loosening of soil can improve air circulation.

How much of your suckers did the wind fell down??

It a natural disaster we do not have 100% control of. But the good news is that we can reduce the number of stand that will fall every beginning of the season

Steps to kick start an Agric Biz

1. Before you venture into any Agric Biz, the first thing to do is seek for info on the do & don't of the Agric Biz to cut down on risk factor. Like every other Biz, Agric Biz has it numerous risk factors which can either be Biological or environmental. Which ever may be the source of the risk factor, you need to first identify it and figure out if it can be eliminated or managed. If it going to be managed, then at what cost? If it is going to be eliminated, then at what cost? Trying to reduce risk also involves getting informed quality information like purchasing our TME419 production Book which has over the years become potential cassava farmers friend.

2. The second step will be......coming up with a crop budget. When you establish your crop budget which is what you plan to invest....the next decision you need to take is studying the market of what you are producing. When you study the market and you are able to establish your expected profit, then deduct your investment from your expected profit.....if you have real profit then it a worthwhile Biz
More steps from our URL, NL page, Instagram page and you tube….just search for kenfarm
As for cassava value chain, it a 1yr cycle of crop, so if you follow kenfarm direction above, you be able to figure out how profitable cassava Biz is.
Kenfarm ebook will help u a great deal....it not a book of plenty pages because it not info downloaded from google,....all info from the book are from expert interrogation and so all the topics are straight to the point, brief and precise.

Convert the selling price to Naira and see how plantain farmers are suppose to be cashing out....kenfarm bunch produce 30fingers...divide 30 fingers by 3 = 10 X $2.53 = $25.3 per bunch.....it translates that in naira....a bunch cost #350 X $25.3 = #8,850....so a dozen sold to USA will amount to #106,260......and they (Retailers in 9ja) will come your farm dey price a dozen for #5,000.... Make I see una leg for my farm again grin

Re: Treated Giant Hybrids Elephants Plantain Suckers Here For Sale Rapid Fruit by Ken4agent(m): 1:41pm On Jun 24, 2021
Plantain farm Post planting operations in steps:

Step1. 4 Weeks after transplanting, the suckers will be due for the first weeding. Weeding is to be done with hoe and nut cutlass to reduce mortality. If herbicide will be used, it must be done by kenfarm trained staff. This is because it has to be done professionally so that the herbicide does not touch the growing suckers. Touching the sucker leaf will obstruct their growth.

Step2: Just after the first weeding, you are to observe the plantain farm to see if there are suckers that did not germinate. If mortality is recorded then replanting of the sucker on that spot needed to be done asap.

Step3: 6 weeks after transplanting the suckers, NPK fertilizer is to be applied. The Quantity to apply and the method of application is stated in the soil test report. A 70kg bag of NPK fertilizer can take care one acre (1000pcs) of suckers.

Step4: 24 weeks after transplanting, the hybrid suckers needs organic manure. The Quantity and method of application is spelt out in the soil test report.

Step5: 26 weeks after transplanting, heaping of the base of the suckers with sand must be done. However, step 4 and 5 can be done together to safe cost. But if you have a residence worker on the farm, then it should not be done together.

Step6: 36 weeks after transplanting, application of liquid organic fertilizer can be done. The fertilizer is specific for bigger fruit because the active ingredient is targeted towards improving the size of the fruit.

However, if you have access to potash (eru), you may add to the base of each stand. Or you may purchase a 50kg bag of Murat of potash. This step is optional though.

CAUTION
1. If all the above steps are followed meticulously, then at 28 weeks, the suckers should attain puberty. At 36 weeks the suckers should start following and at 48weeks, the suckers should start fruiting.

2. All the steps above (both cassava and suckers) need adequate supervision by an experience farmer. The operation is not to be left in the hands of the workers who usually don’t do them well enough.

3. Also it is very important to note that a source of water is to be provided for the suckers for the dry season. As water is the driving force for the growth of plantain sucker. Lack of water leads to slow growth rate and most times leads to small fruit.

4. If you have not gotten a residence staff, then I can help you import a Benue man so you negotiate charges with him.

NB: If you need to do organic farming you can consult with kenfarm

Cheers!!

Are you aware that water is the driving force for the smooth growth of your plantain sucker?

If you have just purchased our viable hybrid sucker, it is important you ensure your plantation is Sustainable by installing a water source and following other steps highlighted in our web.

Sustainability of your plantation is largely dependent on the availability nutrient in your farm soil. The reason you need a soil test to asertain the level of nutrient needed to bring the soil nutrient to critical level

As simple as this may sound, I must say when diving into any Agro Biz, it is very important to ask yaself " what is my comparative advantage" ?

If you can not find any in that Biz, pls re-evaluate the Biz to check for risk factors. If you can not handle the risk factor 90%, pls flee from the AgroBiz as disaster is eminent ahead

Your farm is not sustainable because you did not figure out your AgroBiz comparative advantage and you did not figure how to deal with all your risk factors

NB: your plans can appear simple on paper, but when you get on the field to execute the plans the real reality challenge will set in

More detail....consult expert

Re: Treated Giant Hybrids Elephants Plantain Suckers Here For Sale Rapid Fruit by Ken4agent(m): 11:07pm On Aug 25, 2021
Whether your hybrid sucker will express itself in terms of fruit size and numbers of fingers depends on the following factors:

1. If your soil has NPK at critical level. And most expecially if the Patacium which is responsible for fruiting is at critical level

2. If you are able to control weed from transplanting to 6months

3. If the sucker got enough water from transplanting to 6months

4. If you did a soil test to asertain the CEC value of your farm soil

If you are able to put all these factors under check, then you are sure of having a hybrid sucker fully expressed in terms of fruit size and numbers of fingers.

Your hybrid sucker is engineered to produce giant Elephant fruit with a good number of fingers, resistant to disease and 12month maturity (and not 2years like the local bride).

But if you do not put all the above factors under check, then you are not doing it right.
