I think Oba means "king of kings", in other words "emperor".
IF “oba” truly translates to “king of kings,” then what part of it is “king,” and what part is “kings” ?? LMAO! cheesy

That is the translation which a French visitor to Benin empire gave in the 18th century.
Nope!

This meaning is NOT from a Bini-English lexicon or even dictionary. Rather, it is from L. Jacolliot’s travels account to Ijebu, Benin, and Chad.

The word “oba” as used in that specific context was NOT even in relation to a Benin ruler in the first place.

It was specifically used in the Yoruba context in which God is also called “oba”.

Jacolliot was having a conversation to inquire about the local belief in the existence of God.

The reply confirms the locals’s belief in the existence of an invisible God whose name is “Aroué;” who created everything in the world; and who has the title “oba”.

This context shows clearly that the rendering of “oba” as “roi des rois” is an interpretation based on the very subject of the chat, viz. God.

Also, the book is not an 18th century book, liar. It is a 19th century book from the year 1880.

Cheers!

Oga shutup your mouth you there insult a bini man for what reason, because we support the 1979 edict that support a prince must have an Itsekiri or bini mother

You're not itsekiri you fool,

Because we edos see itsekiri as brothers, if you're indeed itsekiri then you're a fool

They are all insane, coming here to parade as yorubas the true itsekiri wont agree to be Yoruba neither would they agree to be fully edos they would rather stay neutral

All this ones here are saboteurs pretending to be itsekiris, the edict must stand Tsola must be dethrone and the law must be upheld the former olu is to be blamed for all this probably he never wanted any of his children to rule

Or he probably had an hidden son somewhere who made the requirement

The itsekiri people cannot tell who is to be made king, it is not their choice when the stool was enacted by the benins it it also not their choice in the current century,

Tsola must be dethrone and iyasere should act as the reigning king until a match for the throne is found

A deliberate disobedient of custom by a custodian shows how useless the throne has become

That same law that made the former king, the ruler of itsekiri amongst is brothers is thesame law he stepped on, how ungrateful the olu was to the law

grin Bini want to force King on Itsekiri people. You have no place to tell itsekiri people that their Olu-designate is not qualified.

I've said it and I'll say it again. Frustration at the thought that itsekiri are longer comfortable with being ganged up on and seen as minorities easy to be bullied

All the SS minorities are having sleepless nights now grin

It’s the 21st century provide the video clip (which you claim was viral) and prove this point in your favour or shush!

The definitive video you saw the Oba made about Eko not being Benin's, where did you see that video?
You’re dealing with someone whose IQ is light years above yours, okay? cheesy

In other words: You made a claim, and as such you have a burden to prove your own claim by bringing forward verifiable evidence — an example of which you claimed to have seen go viral. Not the Edo frauds of Gabriel Omohinmin and Charles Kumolu.

[s]Tao11 It is really obvious that you are totally pain about Benin since both the Benin palace and it people have rejected Yoruba over and over again

we all know that you dont understand Edo language

gregyboy has explain everything to you and you still call it false because you always want everything that comes from you to be the right one even when they are lies

you where quick to say the itshekiri people are full Yoruba because the people accept it .....

but you became blind to also say that the Benin palace and the people are not Yoruba since they have always rejected it

you rant online just to feel relevant even when the truth stirs at you

for those who care to listen for understanding

again in benin the word OBA does not mean king so people only describe the word as king because of the position the person answering it hold

Oba means someone shining

ogie means royalty

Enogie is someone sent by the Oba to represent him in any community

as for the complete meaning of the Oba title

omo ...... child
noba .......who shines
nedo .......for edos
Uku...........land,space,environment
akpolokpolo......that is very big.

tao if not for your deep pain when it come to Benin issues ( which can never change a thing) you would have understand that the Oba title explain his might.

there is not diference between what I just explain to that of gregyboy but you consciously want to make him feel as if he don't know what he is saying..

your painess stink and it surprise me on how gregyboy manage to keep on arguing with you

tao go hug the nearest transformer if Benin matter pain you too much

or b like say I go call your doctor hellraiser77 make he come treat your pain syndrome

Wonderful! Wait a second!

Does your 1938 document also prove that your king did not have the title “Omonoba” until perhaps 1939?

Dumb and reta.rded Benin reasoning everywhere? cheesy

Interesting conclusion!

Following your dumb logic we must also conclude that Binis borrowed “oba” from Yoruba because of my 1937 attachment below, right ??

www.nairaland.com/attachments/13413322_5aa76888f6034d1abb5df6fb2aa10fe5_jpeg_jpegee89809cd88815ff6b0f18e327840f80

Well, the Binis got the word “oba” from the Yorubas — NOT because of my 1937 attachment here, but because of an actually (more) valid reason.

See link below for a devastating exposition on this:
https://www.nairaland.com/6234931/why-ikwerres-not-igbo-logic/15#96513655

Oh! I should also add that the British colonialists didn’t come from Britain with a ship full of pound sterlings to distribute as salaries to indigenous monarchs.

The salaries paid to each of them were proportional to the size of the revenue generated from their respective regions.

This has to be clarified before Binis run along with another fresh load of hallucinations.

Cheers!

That is not even a newspaper, that is a textbook a reprinted textbook which added oba to the title of alake the original text would be sir alake of Igbaland
